914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Need 914 Conversion Info

Posted by: TwinTurbo914 May 30 2003, 01:56 PM

HI,

I am currently doing a 914 conversion. I have a 1974 914/4 that I am currently putting in a Subaru 2.0 Twin turbo engine that will be producing about 350+ horsepower. I already know that the engine will fit, because i have test fit it, and i have the adaptors on the way. I have a stage 3 six puck clutch for it, but i wanted to know if the stock 901 tranny will with stand this kind of abuse. I already have a radiator for the front, but wanted to know where the best place would be to run the coolant lines. Also what kind of body kits are availible for the 914, I think mine looks a little plain. What type of quarter mile time do think i can run with a 350+ horsepower engine that revs 8,500 Rpm's? I have most of the project figured out but any info is greatly apreciated. Oh also im going with the accel gen. VII DFI if anyone was wondering about engine management.

Thanks Donny

You can't turbo a 914... didn't you know? ;-)

I can't answer any of your questions... but welcome to the group!!

yepp, the 901 will only hold up to some 250HP ...

you'll need a 915 or even better a 930 ...
ask Brad about your options. he's on top of all the V8 conversions and your engine setup sounds like it'll get into that HP range too.

as for the radiator lines, if you don't need the heat, run them through the heater-channel.
otherwise, you can run them under the car (left and right of the center tunnel)
or behind the rocker panels (exposes them in the fender-wells) ...

You'll probably blow up the tranny at some point. Don't use first gear, it's just too weak.

Run the water lines under the car, if you have the money and want a known working good radiator setup call up http://www.renegadehybrids.com and get thier setup.

The 6 puck is probably going to be a bit grabby and chattery for the street.

I figure high 11's - low 12's, but it's a 914. It needs to turn.

Hey Doni,

Welcome to the BBS.

I think you will end up breaking 901's fairly quickly. If you want to do it right the first time and have a tranny that will stand up to some pretty serious abuse... skip the 901 and go to a 915. The box itself will be in the 500-900$ range depending on what year you decide on using... and the only way to run it mid engine is with the WEVO mid-engine kit for the 915 in a 914. You'll have 2500-3000K in the tranny... BUT it will last and you will have a true 5 speed unlike what you will have with the 901 where first is too low to use (and breaks easily)

And when he says "the only way" he means the only way other than using a cable shifter. (But the WEVO is better)

ps - While on the topic of trany swaps... someday I'll run an upside-down G50 just to irk people who say it's not practical. happy11.gif

He can buy the Vellios kit also...

I'm too the point now.. I'm only going to recommend "parts" that I know for a fact bolt on and work correctly the first time. The cable shift setup needs a ton of time/effort to make work correctly on a 915.. and the Vellios kits require machining prior to assembly.

I didn't know it was still being produced.

I havent heard a serious "NO" yet from anybody on the Vellios crap. I think he makes them when he wants and not when there is demand for the product.

Somebody email him and ask if you can buy a 930 mid engine kit. I would like to see the pieces he has for it.. and see if we can make it work.

I have a buddy that has a 930 Trans, and he will either give it to me or pratically charge me nothing. But how is the gearing in it? And what exactly do i have to do to put it in?

Posted by: Brad Roberts May 30 2003, 11:19 PM

Dont do the 930 box. The ratios are too tall for a engine with low torque characteristics. Its perfect for a 450hp SBC with 400lb ft of torque. You have to do a ton of work to the 930 box to make it work in a mid-engine config. The 915 will run you a lot less to make it run mid-engine. Find my 930 box thread on the BBS. Its buried somewhere. It runs about 4500$ to make a 930 box work in a 914.

How much do the 915 boxes run? How much does it cost to do the conversion on the box? What is the WEVO kit and who makes it? Who modifies the 915 boxes? Thanks any info greaty appreciated

Um.. I posted above the typical prices for a used 915.

Go here http://www.wevo.com for the WEVO kit or contact me offline.

WEVO sells the "kit" and can re-set the pinion depth when you flip the ring gear for mid engine use.

so how much higher does the g50 sit?
what's going rate for one now-a-days?

Chris
more hp in my future...

How much do the Accel FI systems run?

You might be better off using an Autronic or Haltech since they both have systems designed for the Subaru ignition
(combined crank-angle/cam-angle trigger system)

http://www.haltech.com

With the aussie dollar/US dollar exchange rate, these systems are killer deals right now.

As to your conversion questions...

run the water hoses under the car in the 'channels', use the hardware store u-bend pipe clamps, rivet in place. use a depth limiter on the drill bit.

too much engine for the tranny unless you have under 215 tires, then no first gear and be gentle.

Link Systems in a nice complete FI for Subaru, used by Sand Rail builders I talked to this guy (Distributer in AZ) knew what he was talking about. About $1200

You are going to hate the 6-puck on the street. Call and get a Kevlar sport disc. Used by RH for their high hp applications on a Kennedy Stage 2 p-plate. Stickier than I like right now but a turbo is in my future.

You've got my engine of choice if I ever build a Rally 914, so please post pics when you can smile.gif

The DFI setup will cost me about 1300, plus about another 275 for the EDIS box for my coil packs. I figured the the 901 box wasnt strong enough, so im looking for a 915 right now, im just gonna take it easy in it once i get it going and work all the bugs out of it, and then switch over to the 915. I will post my pics when I am a little further along. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mueller Jun 4 2003, 12:00 AM

Do you mean the MegaJoltLite EDIS kit?

For less than 1300 you can get something that will run both fuel and ignition (wasted spark or coil-on-plug)

To me I'd rather have the same package control my motor instead of having to learn a new OS and wonder if they will communicate with each other perfectly.

If it were me... I'd rather start with the 915 box from the beginning rather than switching over later.

there is some fabrication, clutch, shift linkage, etc... issues involved in the switch. Doesn't make since to set up and get the 901 working and then repeat all of the effort to do the switch.

There really is no extra labor in installing the 901 first because everything basically bolts right up there is no real issues with it. And The Accel box controls the F.A.S.T EDIS box really nicely, from what I hear even better then the F.A.S.T box does. And talking with a lot of people the Accel Gen VII is the most user friendly and the best product on the market right now
