Well today was interesting.
The begining:
I got a 2.7 from a '74 targa for free from a friend. Yup, a free engine. I looked at this engine that had loose head nuts and subsequent exhaust leaks and figured that it would need some work. It couldn't cost that much, right? I mean, the engine was free. So the heads needed t be worked, the barrels needed to be re worked, and I figured that I would just rebuild it my self. During the school semester. In my free time. Ok, so it didn't work out that way. I was fortunate, however, to live near a wonderful shop that is very inexpensive. The owner himself finished assembly of my engine (I dropped off a box of parts and an assembled long block with two pulled studs ). He is only gonna charge me for the time it took him. He did it on his free time and he will likely cut me a large break on the cost. I dropped off the engine when they were moving shops and I told him not to rush as I was in no hurry. Well today I stopped by and was expecting him to have been too busy. Nope, he pulled the cover off of it and was like, "walla." Now I am excited, and sad. the bill will be calculated by Wed
I never thought that I would build a real Porsche /6 because of the cost. this is so overwhelming. I'm gonna need a bunch of encourgement on this one. I hear a sucking sound in my wallet.
Anyone need interior pieces restored? Gotta fund the project somehow.
just picked up a 2.7 long block and transaxle saturday. let me know how this works so I can send mine down there
I would be glad to help anyone out with the same thing. The place that I work with is Motorworks in National City. The owners name is Sergio.
Here are some costs tha I can remember:
Rework heads (seat grind, ream valve guides, surface) $400
Recondition Alusil barrels $192
Assemble engine (about) $800
Back yard drying out?
Yup, soon the mud will be replaced with a fresh layer of cat shit
Hell man, look at Trekkor and Kerry, they did it! Well, Kerry is almost there. You can do it!
Be careful on that engine though. If it is a 74', it has the small oil pump (not that big of a deal) and could be a non-S engine. I forget how to tell, but it is the difference of about 25hp.
How much to do both door pads, the insturment panel trim, the glovebox door, and a getty design dash in smooth vinyl with red piping?
wow congrats mike...
that is really awesome about the -6

here's a more recent pic, you can see the leather on the wheel is crumbling. it comes off in little pieces, almost looks like it's burned from the sun ...

Ok.. I can see putting the tach in with the redline facing up, which rolls the tach over on it's side.
But why UPSIDE DOWN???????

That interior is looking mighty nice Andy!
I like the look of the Red vinyl on the dash...it is the same look that I was going for, I just did mine with paint.

Hey guys,
I have been working as a plumbers assistant to finance this time between college and medschool. The only problem is the hours are not gauranteed So I have a lot more time to do other peoples projects and upholstery
Dan,
I have a fully re-done 2.7 with SC cams now. It has the smaller oil pump, but I am not running the high performance mumbo jumbo so it will suffice. thanks for the encouragement.
Clay,
PM me with your work order request and I will shoot you an estimate. I am not too sure about the piping, though. We will have to talk.
Andy,
I can have the guys replace your leather with new if you find the kit. I tried to get them to make a kit (couldn't be that hard), but they were not interested. I'll look into it this week or next.
I forgot to mention that I have mirrors for sale, too !!!!
Mike,
If you decide to do the conversion on a supper budget then I have a motor mount you might be interested in...
(not a bulkhead)
-6 will be soo coool....!
Brant,
I fortunately have the bulkhead mount installed already. I bought it a while ago when I was getting paid to go to school. Thanks though.

Clay,
I am interested in doing the work for you. However, I have all of the parts already. I would not even have considered the engine rebuild if I didn't get all of these pieces.
Ifyou still want to proceed, PM me.
Thansk Dude.

When you mentioned "recondition alusil cylinders", what are they going to do? AFAIK there's not much they can do to them except recoat (lots o'money) or very lightly hone them with a very specialized process.

Andy,
Sorry I dont know of any.
Sammy,
I have some reading for you!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=137346&highlight=re+ring+alusil
Summary: You can use Alusils if they are still in round and do not have gouges, etc. The process uses a silcon paste and a hone with stiff felt. We have electron microscope proof of the results of the process.
I have met the guy that Literaly wrote the book for honing the Alusil cylinders.
In fact his name is on the cover of the book for all machining processes that Sunnen Corp engineered for all off their automotive machining equipment.
And one of the lead teks that Porsche hired from Sunnen to find out how to resurface Porsche cylinders. He is that guy...
He is still honing porsche cylinders in his shop.
He is a world class machinist and has the pedigree and the tools to back it up. He also ports heads besides doing most engine machining...
He handles balancing, all head and block work, surface testing, wet break in setup, rod machining and alignment and on and on.......
His shop is in Costa Mesa. He is somewhat of a recluse to the industry now days. I will call him up tomorrow and see if he wants his phone number listed on this forum.
If you guys are interested.. i will TRY to get him to come on board and lend some of his smarts to this board.
His expertise is NOT in type 4. Even though he is very familiar with them. His shop has Lambo and ferrari 12 bangers in it as well as Suby motors and chevys...
Dam interesting guy John is...
What do you guys think???? Do I go for it????

Dr. Evil,
When are you stepping away from 914 upholstery? My new car won't be ready for interior until the summer...
Felix,
I will end about July provided I am accepted into medschool this time around. If I have to reapply, I will continue with the upholstery.
Yep, that thread was what I was talking about when i wrote "specialized honing process". I studied it in depth before I found out I was lucky enough to have nikasil in my engine. Basically not much more than a thorough cleaning of the surface.
I just wanted to make sure some hack didn't jack up your cylinders by doing something dumb.
Mike, small hijak here, I got one for you on the uhplostry side , maybe .
I finnaly got around to test fitting the Pep boy specials in the 73 last sunday. The Good news is they clear the Ebrake handle and tilt handle, the bad news is that the countour of the new seat upper dosnt mate w/the cut-out contour in the backpad like the OE seats did (I know this is worthless w/o pics blah blah bla)
Do you know what I mean?
I think I have two options toss the backpad and carpet, or modify or create a cutome backpad. Is that some thing your guy is up to doing?
Sammy,
good looking out. Thanks.
Rich,
I know exactly what you mean. I have been following that thread and was wondering if that would be a problem. What you can do is take a core back pad (or yours if you are brave), take the skin off of it, and trim the foam to fit. After that, I can have it covered for you. The only other way that I can figuer it out is to have the seat and pad sent here so I can size it, but that would be shipping cost prohibitive I think. Or, you can take measure ments and send them with the pad (or pay me for a core) and I can cut it with my foam cutter and have it covered.
Back on topic,
I picked up the engine yesterday. $880 which included the oil cooler modification, and the fixing od some boogered up exhaust studs. Now I am waiting for someone to come over and help me put it back on my engine stand so I can load it up. Anyone local wanna touch my engine
Yes.
But I doubt I'll be in S.D. anytime soon....
Take some pics, i want to see how the engine turned out...

I just assembled my DIS MJLJ OMFG. Now I gotta figure out how to use my computer to play with it, and how to get the sensor and wheel mated (Oh Mueller ). It will be going on my /6 and I will document so others can copy. |
Hey Gaz,
nope. I am stuck with my lap top not talking to my box because I do not have any serial jacks on my laptop. I have a USB to serial adaptor, but it is still looking for comm1. I was reading about how this was happening to others, but the fixes were worded in a language that I am not familiar with (software). I have not played with it for a while. At present I am cleaning and rebuilding my CIS and will then try to fabricate a mount for my sensor. I will be mimicking a mount that I saw from Clewett. When I get around to fooling with the software again, I will be posting and may be hitting up Skline to un-screw my program. Thanks for keeping up on this
Congrats Mike!
Too bad about the sudden cost though. BUT, It could have been worse!
So does that mean that we will FINALLY see you and Noel at a get together????? It's been waaaayyy to long man.
Good luck with your med school app! (and paying for your engine build. )
