An improperly set pinion depth is known for making that kind of noise.
Was the trans recently "rebuilt"?

Has it always done it? Did it make the noise before you added the new oil?

What weight oil did you use?

Ok.. Did the whining stop once you changed the bearing?? And is there any special tools needed to do the fix??

Tool #1:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=113587&st=0#entry1402767

Other than that video, standard tools will get your tranny disassembled to the point where you replace the bearing.

To reassemble you need the shift rod alignment tool from PP.

But of course... "while you are in there"....... is another story :-)

Yes my trans works great now! I replaced some syncros, and dog teeth while I was in there! All the parts were used but in good shape so it only cost me about $450!

You should get the DrEvil Transmission Rebuild Video and decide if you can do it! It does require some special tools and knowledge and the "While your in there" should be considered!

I did mine at the Dr's Clinic in Napa and have done a total of 3 so far with every one is still working very well!

Whoa...Slow down a minute.
If it was me, before tearing down the trans, I would change that Swepco for a cheap ass Dino GL-5. No friction modifiers or additives.

Can the wrong oil cause gear whining? Absolutely.

If you need new synchros, this tool is very handy:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/9144/POR_9144_TOLTOL_pg11.htm#item46

Here's the alignment jig for the shift forks:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search_2014.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&SUPERCAT_FLAG=Y&make=POR&model=9144&section=transm&page=4&bookmark=21&part_number=TOL-721-T76

You may be able to get them cheaper elsewhere--international shipping may make a more local retailer a better deal, even if the list price is more. But it's worth asking what the shipping would be... Contact Glenn@pelicanparts.com and ask. smile.gif

Nope, looks like this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Differential-Bearing-PORSCHE-911-912-914-/400615127262?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3A914&hash=item5d4685b8de&vxp=mtr

I found a used one for $50 that I bought as a spare.

Dr Evil has them used and I would trust them if he has inspected them.
