914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Malaga Red Refresh

Posted by: mtndawg Jul 7 2014, 03:37 PM

I became one of THOSE people this weekend who has acquired a '75 Malaga Red 2.0L that's been in a garage for 20+ years! Cookie cutters with a 911 front end. From the looks of things, somebody may have been involved with local racing. It wouldn't be a 914 without a little rust under the battery, but that appears to be very limited as everything under the rockers it solid.

biggrin.gif Welcome back. Serious looking rollcage.

The cookie cutters look great, those are keepers. No drinks or food on the veloooor seats. The air horn could be for sale for the right buyer.

Been doing work on the car but not posting progress, so I'll have to start doing that. Rebuilt the Webers, they are basically in new condition now. There's a new steel fuel line in, rotary fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. The engine sounds pretty good, but there's a huge oil leak so the motor is coming out for a refresh. I have decided to sell these carbs (40's) because I got a larger brand new pair to take their place.

How do carbs work compared to stock FI? Just curious cause I've got a set of 44's sitting around and the FI Is giving me fits.

Posted by: zambezi Mar 5 2017, 04:46 PM

Larger carbs? How big is your motor?

Posted by: Front yard mechanic Mar 5 2017, 04:51 PM

Me like Malaga

Posted by: mtndawg Mar 5 2017, 05:08 PM

Engine was dropped. Here's a photo of the Pauter Rockers that are going to be replaced by 1.7 rockers with the elephant foot adjuster.

I'm going to put 44 Webers on. Someone in the past enlarged the engine beyond 2.0. I need to get the cylinder measurements to know the exact size.

It's a matter of opinion. If this car had FI when I bought it I would have kept it. It came with carbs so I'm keeping that arrangement.

Pics inside the engine with new bearings and the rockers that will replacer the Pauter rockers.

Here's Malaga red for you: I think I'll loose the spoiler however.

44s are very likely going to be too much carb for the motor, unless you've got a real hot cam and rotating bits (and heads!) built to cope.

Why remove the Pauter rockers? Are they worn or too high a ratio?

They rely on splash oiling, and are not self-oiling. They were originally designed for engines that only had to run 1/4 mile at a time. You can ameliorate some of their issues with a spray bar, but it's easier to swap to 1.7 rocker arms and 911 "elephant's foot" adjusting lugs. Even though a bit of machining of the arms is required.

Cut out the battery tray and stand today. Someone previously put in a new tray and stand but did not repair the rust down below. I've got new sheet metal on the way from restoration design. Say what you want about HF tools...I've been using this harbor freight grinder for about 6 years now.

Cut out the sheet metal. I was using a cutting wheel at the beginning, half way through I discovered the high speed cutter at Harbor Freight which is much faster for making long cuts.

I also discovered there are 2 layers of sheet metal under the battery.

Since I was taking forever, I took this to a master welder who's forgotten more than I know.

I'm sure there's a good reason but - why 1.7 rockers that need machining instead of 2.0 rockers that don't ?

The machining is required to use the 911 elephant foot adjusters and 2.0 rockers can't be use with the 911 elephant feet adjusters. Stock 1.7 rockers and adjusters bolt right on.

The elephant feet adjusters are easier on the valve tips and don't wear like the stock 1.7 or 2.0 adjusters.

It's not that 2.0 rockers don't need machining--the holes are the wrong diameter, so the 911 lugs don't fit at all!!

--DD

Posted by: mtndawg Apr 4 2018, 10:15 PM

Yes the 911 lug fits into the 1.7 rocker it does not fit the 2.0 rocker.

Battery stand, tray and everything underneath fixed. The tray is removable, I am going to use nicer looking hardware eventually.

First off, I don't think the color is Malaga red. You have more of a guards red. see my attachment...
The carb issue is one that the 40's are a bit small and the 44's are a bit large for a 2056. What we need is a 42 that they don't make. The 40's and 44's will work great with the right set up. The cam grind matters as the mech.advance dizzy.
welcome back, you are on the right track. don't spend money unless you need too.
