914World.com _ 914World Garage _ some people just don't get it.

Was filling my gas tank yesterday when I heard a commotion and a couple guys yelling behind me. When I turned around I found they were yelling at me. I looked under my car to check for gas pouring out, but it was dry. They were yelling about me putting gas in my engine. One of them said the gas goes in the back. I told them to relax, I was putting it in the tank. Then they started arguing with me.when I showed them the tank and the engine they were amazed at my skills for moving the engine to the middle. They just refused to believe it came that way. Less than a mile away, I made another stop and someone in the parking lot asked if that top came off. I simply said yes. as he was walking around the car he said "that's a karman ghia right"? I was gonna just say yes but he saw the hood badge and said "oh, it's a Porsche, no it's not! You just stuck the emblem on there". I just walked off. I've been dealing with this crap for 40 years. Why can't people just mind their own business? If every guy who's told me his best friend had one in college really had one there would have been two million made. Now I'm not adverse to talking about my car, but at least ask a real question and stop lying. Had one guy tell me he used to do frame off restorations to them in the 70's. Huh? Go away dude.

Yeah, I like showing the engine to interested folks who have no idea about this car. Pop the hood, oops, no engine here huh.gif Wait, that's right, it is a Porsche, so the engines in the back. Pop the trunk, happy11.gif hey! Where is it? lol-2.gif

you're talking about your Fiat, right?

Posted by: KELTY360 Jul 13 2014, 08:18 AM

A week ago I was filling up and an attractive young lady in an SUV at the pump next to me asked,

"is that a trunk?"

I said yes and pointed to the rear lid and said "this is also a trunk."

She got this puzzled look on her face and said, "where's the engine?"

I told her, "it's a pedal car."

Now she's really puzzled screwy.gif and says, "huh?"

Showed her where the engine was and she grinned and thanked me for the tour.

Most people say "I used to have one when..." But for the few it's a Fiat.

Funny storys and it sounds like some of the ones I get especially the ones "I use to have one of those." When I was restoring mine a few years ago there was a guy who was looking at the house next door because it was for sale. He came over and was watching me for a minute and asked "hey is that a 1914." I just looked at him and said yeeaahhh.

Ha! I've done that trick too. Told one guy it's a a new kind of car that doesn't use an engine. Just a a battery. He believed it!

And, I agree about the numbers issue and have made that same comment too: since less than 120,000 total were made, and every other person I meet says they used to own one.... clearly Porsche was lying about the production numbers. By my calculations, Porsche made roughly 137 million of them.

10yrs go when I bought my current 914 I had small water leak by the lower windshield frame area when it would rain / wash the 914. An older guy in the neighbor hood stopped by while out for his walk and said he had on of those back in the day. Asked what I was doing and I told him I had a water leak when it rains and just trying to see if I could trace where it was coming in at.

He told me to check my heater core confused24.gif

She did a classic double take. Where is the motor? Fun stuff. I really don't remember hearing many stupid comments. mostly curious and approving stuff

Took mine out today and much to my surprise I got a lot of love from 911 owners. Even when my car died on the side of the rode I had some 911 guys stop and ask if they could help. People are really starting to appreciate the 914. Also a lady walked around my car for about twenty minutes. Had to get it home on a flat bed though. sad.gif

This is nothing new. It has been happening for years. There is even an episode of the original Hawaii 50 where a woman is driving a 914 and it breaks down. The next scene shows the mechanic in the front trunk telling her that the carburetor is bad. WTF.gif

Years ago, a whole group of 914s got together to go to Austin from DFW for a tour down there. We had stopped for gas, and this woman in a pickup looked at the car and said "I got one of those in the shed behind the house. It's just down the road." Everyone started thinking "Original six" or "916" so we all had to follow her to her place.

This is what we found:

At one time Betty and I kept a running total of the number of incorrect guesses at the type of car we were driving. We stopped when we reached 100 wrong guesses.

I still laugh when Betty tells about the kid who walked around her car at an AX. First he looked in the front, and didn't see the motor. Then he looked in the back and didn't see the motor. So he asked her where the motor was...

Her response: "I knew I forgot something this morning."

As for Californians, I think they've just seen more of these cars around, so they have a pretty good idea what they are confused24.gif

Yeah, I was going to say something similar about MGs but didn't want to offend anyone here who may own one. I also didn't say anything to the guy but was thinking "really, you say that after admitting you owned British MG crap!"

I try not to diss any car or owner/group. I used to collect VWs. Talk about junk cars! Seriously, I wish I had some of the VWs I used to own. I would be much richer! I know guys who collect Geo Metros. Most marques have their fans. Who am I to say what anyone else should enjoy.

There are many 911 folks who poo poo the 914, but I also know many 911 and 356 owners who also own 914s.

You will experience it if you drive the 914 much at all. I've had two random conversations about mine today already.

I don't get the car out nearly as much as I would like to. I do get the old story of I had one in college or my buddy had one and crashed it alot at the car shows.

Maybe at 47 I'm considered old so people are polite, but I've got nothing but compliments when I drive my 914. From thumbs up on the highway to people walking over at gas stations to ask me what kind of car it is or that they had a friend who had a 914. Now my Suburban, I don't get compliments on it but then again, I don't have anyone insult it. Since I work in an industrial area of Baltimore City, Big Blue II (the suburban) fits in perfect (2002 with 240K miles and some body damage). I had a guy run over to my car while I was filling up because "any car that you have to lift the front hood to put gas into has to be cool".

Posted by: andys Jul 15 2014, 02:03 PM

While at the gas station I just finished filling up, a Latino guy starts checking out my 914/LS1. He seemed friendly, but said little. I went to close the front trunk lid, but it wouldn't latch. I tied a couple of times after which this guy reached in and pushed the hood release forward as if he knew exactly what the issue was. The hood latched, and I thanked him. He said "Nice 914, have a nice day" in a proper latino accent.

Groceries in the rear trunk..is dinner cooked by the time you get home?

I haven't had anyone say anything bad about the 914?

Stuck in grid lock on I83 inching along when a very attractive young woman in the passenger seat of a big Chevy SUV climbed halfway out the window as they were passing waving and yelling, "I LOVE YOUR PORSCHE"! drooley.gif

At a Gas Station a 40 ish Biker on a nice Ducati came over and said "NICE 914 WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I WAS GOING TO BUY ONE BUT WOUND UP GETTING AN MG INSTEAD...KICK MYSELF WHEN EVER I SEE ONE OF THESE, BIGGEST MISTAKE I EVER MADE". slap.gif

At the HERSHEY SWAP MEET this year a 911 ownercame over and said "I HAVE GOT TO GET ME ONE OF THESE". smile.gif

At a PCA Tech Session at Translog, Tony had his 914 Auto Cross car that he's building on the lift and spend most of the session answering questions by everyone there about the 914. The Boxster Karmin Kia he built, that was at the SEMA Show, sat on the next lift and didn't get nearly as much attention from the mostly 911 crowd. idea.gif

People are taking notice, BIG TIME!

Tonight.
Getting gas, guy looking at my orange 6 says to me "nice car what is it ?
Attendant, who took a phone pic and is about to take the money says to the admirer "Ferrari"
?!?!?!?!
Don't know if I should be thrilled or insulted.

I might have to get a NARP sticker after all. smile.gif

My favorite is to take this to the grocery store. The bagger brings the cart out and I start at the back trunk. Then when it's full I say, "We'll just have to put the rest in the front." Then I pop the "frunk" and begin loading there. . . The next words are always, "where's the motor??" I always reply the same,

"In the middle where God intended it to be!!" lol-2.gif

We have been taking a 914 to the grocery store off and on for for 28 years. But we put all the stuff like paper products and cleaning supplies in the back, and the cold and frozen stuff in the front. Freaks the grocery bagger out when we get a heaping full cart of stuff into it, plus two people. The passenger ends up holding the eggs and anything else that is deemed fragile, and sometimes one or two small bags.

It works better than my pickup for grocery runs.

agree.gif you should see the looks on peoples faces when I pack up camp and pull the 914 around to stuff everything in there. Every car should have two trunks. biggrin.gif

LOL!

Ok, slightly OT, but how many females are there on 914World?
And what percent of teener owners are female vs male?

I say it's 15% vs 85%. What say you?

IMHO, 914's are the least cheer.gif "chick-car"-ish. Well, maybe after Vettes, Vipers and Lambos.

I'm a chick and I love my new-to-me 914 wub.gif (Thanks DAD!) Ya'll will probably get sick of me asking stupid questions but I am trying to fix my little gold 914 back to her "original" condition. driving-girl.gif

Still slightly OT. I was showing my wife a picture of some Pedrini wheels and she noticed the 914-6 GT wheels and wanter to put them on my 72. Explained would need to flare the wheels and she said so. Guse now I need to find a flared 914 with a sportmatic as she refuses to learn manual. Oh darn another 914 in the garage shades.gif w00t.gif

Good luck finding a sportomatic in a 914. They never built a 4 cylinder with a sportomatic, and there were very few sixes built, so they get big money when the come up for sale.

I was in downtown Albuquerque and parked my car in front of a tavern I frequent.
I heard a guy that was standing on the sidewalk say: Wow nice car. Not the usual 914. Sounds like a 2.2 L six with webers. I was surprised because most people don't even know that they made a 914-6. I said "thanks". He said: Could you spare a buck.
I gave him 5 bucks

Took Huey out today, need to get miles on him from the engine rebuild before the autocross this weekend. Had to stop at Lowes on the way home, and I parked way out in the lot.
Came out, there was a guy in a pickup truck stopped taking pictures. When I walked up he asked "I assume that has a 6 in it right? What size?" I said "3.2" to which he said 'Damn man! My little 2.2 I used to have was a screemer...i can't imagine what a 3.2 would be like!" We chatted a bit more, a handful of people came over to look at the car, and amazingly, nobody thought it was some other car besides a Porsche (then again, it does say it down the rockers...)

Not that Huey is stealth or anything... smile.gif

EVERY time we take him out, someone comments/takes pictures/asks if the kids can sit in it, etc. Very cool, always ablidge especailly with the kids...gotta start them young!

Posted by: 7TPorsh Jul 17 2014, 04:28 PM

I have found that most people like the car cause it's old, shiny and different looking; having a Porsche badge on it add the coolness factor.

I find that its the self proclaimed "car" guys that seem to be the ones with snotty attitudes about it being "undesirable".

It's always an MG or 2002 owner it seems.

Everyone else thinks it's cool!

Here in Australia teeners are a bit thin on the ground.

I get a fair amount of people wondering what it is, and asking all about it.

And a good percentage of them are surprised when i expain it only has a 1.7lt 4 cyl in it. Noisy little bugger that it is smile.gif

I get the Fiat comment occasionally, or Triumph ( TR7).

Only ever had one person turn their nose up and it was an old school / old fool 911 snob from the local Porsche club who had no idea what it was until i said it was a 914 , and then he start going off about how they werent real Porsches etc etc .
Seriously dude, you've never seen a car before yet you have the audacity to go down that road .... He got a serve. After all, there is as much if not more VW in his 356 as my 914. I have unlimited time for everyone but asshats....

Posted by: partsman Jul 18 2014, 06:53 AM

I usualy start quizing the poser Porsche guys when they start on the whole "NARP" thing...

I'll ask "Do you know what the FIRST Porsche was? It was a two seater, mid engine VW based 4 cylinder...and it had two trunks..."

"how's that stack up against your REAL Porsche 911? Seems like an exact match to my 914 though..."

Then I walk awy... but I've been told I'm sometimes a bit over the top, so what do I know.

I live in Japan as most of you know, 914's are pretty much non existence around here, probably less than 100 or so but most are not on the road like my car...been living here 15 years and have only seen 2 914's ever!! When I go out in my car I always get attention, sometime so much that I am almost embarrased and must hide my face..lots of thumbs ups from older people, small children and even young attractive women. Always get attention in the gas staion and also being non-Japanese makes others look at me more....a couple of times I have been asked by a Cayenne and Panamerica owner what a cute car I had and asked who made it and they were shocked when I said Porsche...I think they did not believe me at all...I have had some Japanese guys at lights ask me if its a 4 or a 6 cause I have the 911 front end and wheels all around...I tell them its a big 4 and they always say COOL !! I love driving my car in Japan when I have the time and money to afford the expensive fuel costs and seeing peoples reactions...lots of picture taking and smiling kids. Cheers!!

I kept my 914 down at a warehouse with a buch of other cars I own/other family members own - most of which are considered to be far more "glamorous" machines. When working down there with the bay doors open, it was not uncommon for random folks to poke thier head in and ask to look around. I cant tell you how many times they would bee-line straight to the 914. It always surprised me and made me smile.

I've had two people approach me in more recent history. One asked if it was road legal and if it could get up to freeway speeds. ??? The other asked how fast it went. When I said over 100, he pretty walked away and said he didn't buy it.

Another time I in a Starbucks drive through and a cute girl asked if I was driving a Ferrari. That was pretty cool!
