I have a nice dry 72 that was converted to a 2.2 sixer. The car was previously someone's idea of a track day car, and overall is pretty well done. However the rear camber was maxed out so (too big and wide) tires didn't rub the fenders, which were also rolled for clearance. I wanted to return the suspension to more street able specs, but discovered the left camber plate bolts were broken/ missing and stacks of washers were ABOVE the arm while all camber shims were removed/missing. Conversely, the right camber plates had been removed but the bolts were all there and NO washer stacks. I purchased camber shims, but am now confused and perplexed. Any guidance, help, even insightful insults, would be appreciated.

Post some pics of the suspension console. I can't really picture what's going on from your description.

It sounds to me like someone broke the bolts on the driver side while trying to remove them, then drilled them out badly and had to use thru bolts.
The washers are there to make up for the extra long bolts they decided to use.

The shims go above the arm, below the chassis member. If the washers are in the same place, they're standing in for camber shims. If there are a whole bunch of them and the camber is reasonable, or decently negative, then something is bent. Chances are it's the trailing arm that has twisted.

If the washers are on top of the chassis member, then Racer Chris has the likely answer.
