914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Rare Find 936JR

Posted by: Beach914 Jul 29 2014, 12:01 PM

Found this on CL late Sunday and just picked it up in Oceanside. A Porsche 936JR

Needs complete restoration but I think I've got some considering how little I paid for it.

I will start a resto thread if you all are interested.

I am trying to acquire any information, photos, etc. that I can get to make sure it is done as correct as possible.

No its gas powered. Has a 13.5 hp Briggs & Stratton. Drive through a two speed transmission and differential.

I'll take more pics this afternoon after I get it out of the van and on to some pallets.

Took this late last night when I was buying it. Couldn't get a picture of the chassis in front which has broken front welds.

Posted by: Beach914 Jul 29 2014, 01:33 PM

The PO has had it for 20 years and when he purchased it in the 90's he said that it had been in storage in a warehouse in San Marcos, Ca. He said it was white and had some blue stripes so I'm thinking it had the Martini & Rossi team paint scheme on it. Now it has Rhino liner......sucks.....

Posted by: wes Jul 29 2014, 02:37 PM

Wow these I believe are quite collectable probably more $$ than your average 914. I think you are right about the paint scheme. beer.gif

Yeah. Someone in Europe has one for sale for 18,000 euros. Really crazy huh?

I think these are newer than mine so I'd like to see some pictures of an early one. They seem like they have a few more details than mine has on it.

I just ordered a 2002 back issue of Excellence which had an article in it about them. So we'll wait and see.

Posted by: Beach914 Jul 29 2014, 03:01 PM

I have no intention of keeping it and would definitely use any money gained to get my 72 project off the ground. I need a six, chassis stiffening, and the flares put on.

Someone down the street when I was growing up had the Quaker state Indycar version!

A Buddy had one and sold it to Gunnar racing....Nice Find

Posted by: Chris H. Jul 29 2014, 08:24 PM

That's cool man. 13.5 hp is a LOT for a kart-sized vehicle made in 1981. It's probably pretty fast. My 5hp go-kart was quite a handful when I removed the RPM governor back in the day.

Posted by: speed metal army Jul 29 2014, 09:19 PM

Oh crap! A KTM 450 would be pretty fun in there..!!

Posted by: KELTY360 Jul 29 2014, 09:54 PM

Great find! Unless you really want to do a restoration, you'll make more money if you just flip it in 'as found' condition.

Posted by: pete000 Jul 29 2014, 10:04 PM

NICE SCORE !!!

Wayne at Pelican Parts has a mint one...

Thanks for bringing it up and I thought about just flipping it but I'd really like to do it. Actually have my wife's backing on it !!!
I'll be talking to some local custom body shops in the next week or two to see if I can find the right guy to do the body and paint. The body seems pretty solid with a few chips and cracks but nothing major. Graphics and decals would be fun to chase.......

The chassis seems pretty simple and will be easy to repair. I have four Welders in my shop and just bought a miller pulse mig system. They make great tools for me so this should be piece of cake for them.

I'm going to think about for the next few days and not rush to any decision.

Yeah I've got to think about that motor in there. I'm thinking it originally had a 5 hp B&S motor.

I can easily sell the bigger one and get a 5 horse.

That's insane. I was looking at the chassis picture I took and the size of the 13.5 motor thinking it was too big. Without any info on the transmission I'm kinda worried about it taking the increased power and torque.

Posted by: Beach914 Aug 25 2014, 09:14 AM

Almost got it stripped. Just need to remove the differential and the I can begin the repair welding. Car took a hit to the left front and entire front end fell off at some butt welded square tubing. I'm going to cut all of it off, square it up and reattach it.

Differential unit is proving fun to remove also.

Through my post on the FerrariChat site I am in contact with a gentlemen that has an Uncle in Poland that may have been involved in the building of these vehicles. Waiting to hear back from him.

If you get a chance to see the chassis it is very different from mine. It's much more complicated in its construction.
Just wondering why someone would go to all that trouble to make just one 936/77 body. The 936 Junior is a 936/81 I believe.

Posted by: Beach914 Sep 21 2014, 10:10 AM

Brought the body home and am stripping it in the backyard with a heat gun and putty knife. Rhino liner sucks. I have about three pounds in the trash can so far. Uncovering lots of cracks, and flawed areas that will need to be repaired. Plan is to take it to a local shop that does custom paint jobs on boats. Saving a lot of money by doing the crap work of stripping the old coating. Have about 7-8 hours into so far. Chassis going to weld shop this week.

I have a serious collector here in Los Angeles interested in purchasing the vehicle when it's done. Incentive to get my butt in gear and keep it moving.

Black was hiding a lot of the body details. Plus it was such a poor job, bondo on the rear, etc. it will give me the chance to strengthen some weak areas in the body.

Can an adult drive these?

It would be bad ass to show up at the local kart track with one well set up.

If you are a man in a 10 yr old's body. No it would be a tight fit, awkward angle for the knees down under the cowling to the pedals. We'll see though, haven't actually had the body mounted on the chassis properly yet due to the frame being damaged.

It would be fun to get some pictures of it once its done, on a cart track going through some corners.

Been busy with work and haven't made as much progress as I would like but I have finally finished removing the Rhino Liner from the outside and inside of the body.

I would estimate about 5-7 lbs in my trash can. I'm glad it's over after about 18 hours of scrapping.

Next up is to do some reinforcement under the body because of some observed flexing, and some crack repair. Also the rear tailights were made into oval holes with bondo for replacement lights. I'll find something to fit the original slots and remove the bondo. Also need to carefully sand the body down to remove the remaining rhino residue.

As elaborate as the molding and construction of this body is I am amazed that I cannot find information regarding its manufacture. Hopefully someone will see this and recognize it someday.

Thinking about re-glassing the entire rear section after this patch is bonded in. Then re-cut the rear vents and brakelight openings.
Progress has been slow but picking up momentum again with nice weather.
Looking for more authentic wheels and tires that will fill the wheel wells. The clunky knobby tire in the picture won't do.

Were you able to determine what the original paint scheme was?

popcorn[1].gif

Posted by: Beach914 Apr 29 2015, 03:36 PM

Thanks. Not really, no evidence or remnants of any decals or striping. Body was white at one time.

I'm going to stay with the plan to do the White Martini Racing paint scheme and all of the decals. Wayne at Pelican suggested that I consider doing it in a Black base with the Martini Stripes. That's cool too but it raced in white as far as I know.

I have an old friend at HPI Racing (R/C Cars) that does all of the graphics for their bodies. He said he would help me with all of the logos, etc to make sure they are to scale with the vehicle.

Hope to get the body off to a paint shop in June. SoCal Andy said his buddy would probably be very interested in doing it for me.

Chassis is getting re-welded at this time and will be ready for powder coat next week. Ill post pictures soon.

Great pics of the 936JR. I've seen one up close also. Nice machine and definitely fabricated different than mine. The company in Poland that fabricated the JR's did not make the one I have. Seeing it gave me and idea of the finish quality which was okay (it is a toy). Some of the fiberglass was wavy and rippled in areas, and some gelcoat cracks in various corners. As sturdy as the body is it will be hard to prevent future cracking. I'll get it best I can.

Tires and wheels were nice but the tires are too narrow. I'm going to go for some wide slicks and fabricate the finned BBS's to complete the look. Wheels are proving to be a challenge to find in the four lug pattern that I have. May have to have blanks made and have the pattern drilled.

A bunch of sites on eBay and just googling. They came from all over New Zealand, Australia, England and the U.S. . A few were motorcycle sites.
I may still have some of the envelopes with addresses if you need more specifics.

May not use most of them if the scale is not right. I'll have my friend help me make some.

Not much progress with the SoCal heat wave we've been having. Looking forward to getting back to work on it. Reconstructing the back panel with a fabricated glass piece molded with a bent piece of stainless steel. I'll bond it to the rear with resin, blend it in and recut the rear slots. Went to a junkyard on Friday and bought some used tail lights from a Honda to get the red and yellow reflectors. I'll have to fab these as that are a combo of red/yellow.Attached Image Attached Image

Yeah I saw the early version in the black but I didn't see any versions in black with the snorkle air intake. Its a cool color combination though and I have thought about it. Given that two of them are already in the white theme it might be kinda fun to do the black. What are the thoughts on it affecting its long term value and collectibility?

Thanks for the website referral. I'll check it out. I've got a great friend that works for HPI Racing ( R/C Cars) and he does all of their graphics. He has volunteered to help me create all of the authentic decals in proper scale for the body. He came over and saw what I had and said he would take over the graphics.

Posted by: euro911 Dec 1 2015, 12:21 PM

If they only made 5 of them like yours, I'd stick with the original color. In the long run , I think you'll retain the collect-ability.

Posted by: Beach914 Dec 15 2015, 09:01 PM

Bonded fabricated rear fiberglass panel to the body and beginning to trim it out. Next I have to get back to reinforcing the rear wheel arches and body area around the rear naca ducts as the body flexes and keeps cracking the gel coat and glass work. The rear wing and supports have cracks at the joints that need to be redone. The front end is in very good shape.

It's been awhile but I have finally moved on to the next phase of the body restoration. After trying to repair the cracking gelcoat I decided to have a professional take over and repair the gelcoat.I delivered the body on monday to a boat repair shop in Dana Point and it will take about a month. I've also located a Tecumseh 5hp industrial gas engine with an electric start that is on its way. I've now got a couple of options for engines. Going to start on the frame repair this coming week so I hope to be able to add more to this thread as the body and frame progress.

Wow! I'm so glad that you finally chimed in! History on these is sparse. I'm in the process of repairing the frame as it was damaged. The original motor was long gone and I have secured another Tecumseh 5hp with electric start. Its beIN fitted as apart of the repair and aligned with the transmission. Going kinda slow but it will be done right. Maybe ready for 2018 Rennsport or Monterey Auctions we'll see. I need some $$ to fund my two 914 sixer projects. This belongs in someone's mancave or serious Porsche collection.

A bit more than pulling molds off it,made from a heap of small parts to make this body it just isn't that easy.
When you repair a glass body you relieve the cracks in the gelcoat with a die grinder and fill the grooves with resin and rovings or chop up glass mat and add it to a little resin, then go under the body and find why it cracked to start with, thats how you will know.

NOW would be the perfect time to pull some molds offa' that thing. Sell a few copies and that would give you a free 936JR to keep.

Yeah, the boat repair guy and I gave it some thought. Heck maybe that's what he did ! He has had it since the end of April !
Heck now you got me thinking about it again.
Thanks Jeff.......

You are absolutely right! I studied the body when I had it in the backyard scraping the rhinoliner off of it. The body is very complicated and the sections are incredible. A 3D scan of it would be cool.

Had to pull the frame from a friends shop because he was too busy. Had one of my shop welders work for me after work hours and get the front section reattached. Butt welded 1" square tubing not the strongest. Put some strap pieces on the inside and outside. Also removed the differential unit and can now get it off to sandblasting and powder coat. Can't wait to get I back.

Found this youtube link and it's probably the 5th car built by A.I.R..

Some good details shown that will help me with the rebuild.

Obviously appears to be in Japan.

That should be some incentive to get that project done! Talk about validation!!!

Recently moved to Irvine and am able to finally squeeze some room in to get back to the chassis. Built a rolling frame to be able to reassemble the chassis at a comfortable height for my back. I thought I had possibly contracted COVID as I had a coworker infected so I prepared for some possible quarantine time.

Cleaning and refreshing suspension pieces first. Then I have to design and fab a new brake pedal /master cylinder set up up front.

Car seen at the Petersen Museum may be at Canepa in Scotts Valley. Worth a call, maybe?

Cool project for sure!

Yes it was Canepas car. Porsche Guy, Ken Morse, sold it to Canepa. Morse and I have talked and when I get it a little further along he wants to come over and see it. That would be cool since he is the creator along with McGlaughlin from AIR.

Morse claims that they built four cars but my research shows that there are five. So that will be an interesting discussion when we meet someday.

Up in Monterey to see family and make a side trek to Canepa to see the Morse original 936 mini. They are closed but allowed me upstairs alone to see the museum display. Hoped to see some areas to help with my reassembly but found that this original was built quite different. Anyway took a few other photos to help me. Fun trip and many thanks for their hospitality.

According to Kerry Morse our cars were the inspiration for the Jules version that Porsche released. Supposedly Dr Porsche sat in the Morse car and they tried some minor marketing in Germany at that time.
Watching the BAT auction to get a feel of the current market. They made 80-100 of the Jules version and there’s only five ‘Morse’ creations. Much more rare. I hope to colaborate with Kerry to do a story on the karts creation process.

Jules versions were made in Poland and ours were made in the USA.

Sooooo... restoration started in 2014...six years and still not quite done, about normal for a car restoration lol-2.gif
But percentage wise you'll likely make money on this car. beer.gif

Cool project, great find.

Yeah. Life stuff keeps getting in the way. Wife started renovation of her Parents old RV and guess who got stuck doing stuff only to have her lose interest and sell it off.
I’m happy to get back on it and will take my time and have fun doing it.

Frustrating time trying to align the rear axle and the bearing blocks. A center support next to the diff (see pics) causes interference if the bearing blocks are are not level to it. I suspect that the chassis mounting pads are also not flat, or level with each other.

My have to bring it back to work and put it on my big surface plate and measure everything for shims. Ughhhhhhhhh.

Reassembled the front suspension and steering rack. Added the wheels with the BBS cooling fin ‘look’ that I’m working on to see how it looks.

No wonder you haven't gotten around to finishing (starting) your 914.

Posted by: Beach914 Jun 27 2022, 07:41 PM

Back in on the gokart. Made some Scaled down Sebring like mirrors and finishing up the brake cooling fins. Looking to get rolling again and put the body back on.
