Found this on CL late Sunday and just picked it up in Oceanside. A Porsche 936JR
Needs complete restoration but I think I've got some considering how little I paid for it.
I will start a resto thread if you all are interested.
I am trying to acquire any information, photos, etc. that I can get to make sure it is done as correct as possible.
is that a pedal car?
sweet.
A Friend of mine has one - extremely rare. I don't know if I still have pictures of his. I will be by his shop on Saturday
Cool!!

Took this late last night when I was buying it. Couldn't get a picture of the chassis in front which has broken front welds.
The PO has had it for 20 years and when he purchased it in the 90's he said that it had been in storage in a warehouse in San Marcos, Ca. He said it was white and had some blue stripes so I'm thinking it had the Martini & Rossi team paint scheme on it. Now it has Rhino liner......sucks.....
Wow these I believe are quite collectable probably more $$ than your average 914. I think you are right about the paint scheme.
Here's one For Sale - my friend's has the same Jules livery

I have no intention of keeping it and would definitely use any money gained to get my 72 project off the ground. I need a six, chassis stiffening, and the flares put on.
Very cool!
Someone down the street when I was growing up had the Quaker state Indycar version!
A Buddy had one and sold it to Gunnar racing....Nice Find
That's cool man. 13.5 hp is a LOT for a kart-sized vehicle made in 1981. It's probably pretty fast. My 5hp go-kart was quite a handful when I removed the RPM governor back in the day.
Oh crap! A KTM 450 would be pretty fun in there..!!
Great find! Unless you really want to do a restoration, you'll make more money if you just flip it in 'as found' condition.
NICE SCORE !!!
Wayne at Pelican Parts has a mint one...
More pics.

Cool car! Dr Evil has a tail shift conversion kit available.
I think this is what I want it to look like.
Yep....Must be a Porsche...I see a little bit of rust.
Almost got it stripped. Just need to remove the differential and the I can begin the repair welding. Car took a hit to the left front and entire front end fell off at some butt welded square tubing. I'm going to cut all of it off, square it up and reattach it.
Differential unit is proving fun to remove also.
Through my post on the FerrariChat site I am in contact with a gentlemen that has an Uncle in Poland that may have been involved in the building of these vehicles. Waiting to hear back from him.
How about this:

If you get a chance to see the chassis it is very different from mine. It's much more complicated in its construction.
Just wondering why someone would go to all that trouble to make just one 936/77 body. The 936 Junior is a 936/81 I believe.
Brought the body home and am stripping it in the backyard with a heat gun and putty knife. Rhino liner sucks. I have about three pounds in the trash can so far. Uncovering lots of cracks, and flawed areas that will need to be repaired. Plan is to take it to a local shop that does custom paint jobs on boats. Saving a lot of money by doing the crap work of stripping the old coating. Have about 7-8 hours into so far. Chassis going to weld shop this week.

Done with the major stripping. Don't ever want to see Rhino Liner again........
I have a serious collector here in Los Angeles interested in purchasing the vehicle when it's done. Incentive to get my butt in gear and keep it moving.
Looks so much better!
Black was hiding a lot of the body details. Plus it was such a poor job, bondo on the rear, etc. it will give me the chance to strengthen some weak areas in the body.
Cool project!
Can an adult drive these?
It would be bad ass to show up at the local kart track with one well set up.
John
Been busy with work and haven't made as much progress as I would like but I have finally finished removing the Rhino Liner from the outside and inside of the body.
I would estimate about 5-7 lbs in my trash can. I'm glad it's over after about 18 hours of scrapping.
Next up is to do some reinforcement under the body because of some observed flexing, and some crack repair. Also the rear tailights were made into oval holes with bondo for replacement lights. I'll find something to fit the original slots and remove the bondo. Also need to carefully sand the body down to remove the remaining rhino residue.
As elaborate as the molding and construction of this body is I am amazed that I cannot find information regarding its manufacture. Hopefully someone will see this and recognize it someday.
Another Porsche on jack stands while I remove final traces of frickin Rhino Liner.
Thinking about re-glassing the entire rear section after this patch is bonded in. Then re-cut the rear vents and brakelight openings.
Progress has been slow but picking up momentum again with nice weather.
Looking for more authentic wheels and tires that will fill the wheel wells. The clunky knobby tire in the picture won't do.
Nice work!
Were you able to determine what the original paint scheme was?
Thanks. Not really, no evidence or remnants of any decals or striping. Body was white at one time.
I'm going to stay with the plan to do the White Martini Racing paint scheme and all of the decals. Wayne at Pelican suggested that I consider doing it in a Black base with the Martini Stripes. That's cool too but it raced in white as far as I know.
I have an old friend at HPI Racing (R/C Cars) that does all of the graphics for their bodies. He said he would help me with all of the logos, etc to make sure they are to scale with the vehicle.
Hope to get the body off to a paint shop in June. SoCal Andy said his buddy would probably be very interested in doing it for me.
Chassis is getting re-welded at this time and will be ready for powder coat next week. Ill post pictures soon.

Great pics of the 936JR. I've seen one up close also. Nice machine and definitely fabricated different than mine. The company in Poland that fabricated the JR's did not make the one I have. Seeing it gave me and idea of the finish quality which was okay (it is a toy). Some of the fiberglass was wavy and rippled in areas, and some gelcoat cracks in various corners. As sturdy as the body is it will be hard to prevent future cracking. I'll get it best I can.
Tires and wheels were nice but the tires are too narrow. I'm going to go for some wide slicks and fabricate the finned BBS's to complete the look. Wheels are proving to be a challenge to find in the four lug pattern that I have. May have to have blanks made and have the pattern drilled.
Pics of some of the items I have been collecting. It's part of the fun of doing this.
Really cool! If you don't mind sharing, where'd the decals come from?
Need some help. Does anyone that saw this at Rennsport Reunion know who the owner might be. I saw this in Magnus walkers Facebook and it's the only other kart like mine I have been able to find. Thx.
Not much progress with the SoCal heat wave we've been having. Looking forward to getting back to work on it. Rebuilding the tail section because the PO cut and bondo'd the brake light opening for new fixtures. Using gelcoat resin to repair cracks on other areas. [attachmentid=523

That's really cool
Found some more info on my project. Made in mid 70's, one of five made. Sold at auction online in June this year. [attachmentid=529

Now I've got to find an Italian made Tecumseh 172cc electric start motor......good luck.
Reconstructing the back panel with a fabricated glass piece molded with a bent piece of stainless steel. I'll bond it to the rear with resin, blend it in and recut the rear slots. Went to a junkyard on Friday and bought some used tail lights from a Honda to get the red and yellow reflectors. I'll have to fab these as that are a combo of red/yellow.
Yeah I saw the early version in the black but I didn't see any versions in black with the snorkle air intake. Its a cool color combination though and I have thought about it. Given that two of them are already in the white theme it might be kinda fun to do the black. What are the thoughts on it affecting its long term value and collectibility?
Thanks for the website referral. I'll check it out. I've got a great friend that works for HPI Racing ( R/C Cars) and he does all of their graphics. He has volunteered to help me create all of the authentic decals in proper scale for the body. He came over and saw what I had and said he would take over the graphics.
If they only made 5 of them like yours, I'd stick with the original color. In the long run , I think you'll retain the collect-ability.
Bonded fabricated rear fiberglass panel to the body and beginning to trim it out. Next I have to get back to reinforcing the rear wheel arches and body area around the rear naca ducts as the body flexes and keeps cracking the gel coat and glass work. The rear wing and supports have cracks at the joints that need to be redone. The front end is in very good shape.
It's been awhile but I have finally moved on to the next phase of the body restoration. After trying to repair the cracking gelcoat I decided to have a professional take over and repair the gelcoat.I delivered the body on monday to a boat repair shop in Dana Point and it will take about a month. I've also located a Tecumseh 5hp industrial gas engine with an electric start that is on its way. I've now got a couple of options for engines. Going to start on the frame repair this coming week so I hope to be able to add more to this thread as the body and frame progress.
Picked it up from the Dana Point boat shop that was doing the re-gelcoat. Awesome job being that it was all done by hand.
Next step is to get work on the chassis and the fitting the Tecumseh engine that I have obtained.
Some great pics I found to help me in the restoration of mine.
Looking for and/ or considering making a miniature Prototipo wlheel.
this is such a cool project!
Thanks. You should hear the reactions when I tell people I'm restoring a go kart. It's like grow up........until you tell them how significant a vehicle this is.
NOW would be the perfect time to pull some molds offa' that thing. Sell a few copies and that would give you a free 936JR to keep.
I also have e a 936JR From AIR.... Bought it 1986[attachmentid=624449] [attachmentid=624450
Dan at AIR made five of them.....all were slightly different ..fixed rear wing or raised wing
The one in the previous post with the Red 959 belongs to Morse...He has a Real 936 so a junior is only fitting....It was in Canepa booth at Monterrey
911 style ignition switch and quick release Momo steering wheel to get in easier
It's really dirty.....
been in storage
Very cool...I had not seen this thread.
Let's make some for next Temecula 914 Fun Day...if I can get my hands on a body....ANYONE????
Oscar
Stigg , did you buy yours from M Harley ?? from WA.
Wow! I'm so glad that you finally chimed in! History on these is sparse. I'm in the process of repairing the frame as it was damaged. The original motor was long gone and I have secured another Tecumseh 5hp with electric start. Its beIN fitted as apart of the repair and aligned with the transmission. Going kinda slow but it will be done right. Maybe ready for 2018 Rennsport or Monterey Auctions we'll see. I need some $$ to fund my two 914 sixer projects. This belongs in someone's mancave or serious Porsche collection.
Tecumseh engine I found.
Chassis at my friends shop.
.
Had to pull the frame from a friends shop because he was too busy. Had one of my shop welders work for me after work hours and get the front section reattached. Butt welded 1" square tubing not the strongest. Put some strap pieces on the inside and outside. Also removed the differential unit and can now get it off to sandblasting and powder coat. Can't wait to get I back.
Sold at RM Sothebys Auction. 100 of these made and spread around the world.
Found this youtube link and it's probably the 5th car built by A.I.R..
Some good details shown that will help me with the rebuild.
Obviously appears to be in Japan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL4VhvIQU-U
That should be some incentive to get that project done! Talk about validation!!!
Recently moved to Irvine and am able to finally squeeze some room in to get back to the chassis. Built a rolling frame to be able to reassemble the chassis at a comfortable height for my back. I thought I had possibly contracted COVID as I had a coworker infected so I prepared for some possible quarantine time.
Cleaning and refreshing suspension pieces first. Then I have to design and fab a new brake pedal /master cylinder set up up front.
Car seen at the Petersen Museum may be at Canepa in Scotts Valley. Worth a call, maybe?
Cool project for sure!
Up in Monterey to see family and make a side trek to Canepa to see the Morse original 936 mini. They are closed but allowed me upstairs alone to see the museum display. Hoped to see some areas to help with my reassembly but found that this original was built quite different. Anyway took a few other photos to help me. Fun trip and many thanks for their hospitality.

According to Kerry Morse our cars were the inspiration for the Jules version that Porsche released. Supposedly Dr Porsche sat in the Morse car and they tried some minor marketing in Germany at that time.
Watching the BAT auction to get a feel of the current market. They made 80-100 of the Jules version and there’s only five ‘Morse’ creations. Much more rare. I hope to colaborate with Kerry to do a story on the karts creation process.
Jules versions were made in Poland and ours were made in the USA.
Sooooo... restoration started in 2014...six years and still not quite done, about normal for a car restoration
But percentage wise you'll likely make money on this car.
Cool project, great find.
Yeah. Life stuff keeps getting in the way. Wife started renovation of her Parents old RV and guess who got stuck doing stuff only to have her lose interest and sell it off.
I’m happy to get back on it and will take my time and have fun doing it.
Frustrating time trying to align the rear axle and the bearing blocks. A center support next to the diff (see pics) causes interference if the bearing blocks are are not level to it. I suspect that the chassis mounting pads are also not flat, or level with each other.
My have to bring it back to work and put it on my big surface plate and measure everything for shims. Ughhhhhhhhh.
Trying to make lookalike bbs wheels.
Reassembled the front suspension and steering rack. Added the wheels with the BBS cooling fin ‘look’ that I’m working on to see how it looks.
They look great (cooling fins) to me.
Thanks. Here’s a picture from the Morse 936 that was at Petersen a few years ago.
No wonder you haven't gotten around to finishing (starting) your 914.
Back in on the gokart. Made some Scaled down Sebring like mirrors and finishing up the brake cooling fins. Looking to get rolling again and put the body back on.
