Any good ideas on how to test my oil thermostat? I'm beginning to think it's not opening up fully if at all....

what kind do you have?

the 911 style used in 914.6's and the Troutman thermostat can be easily tested in a pan of boiling water on your stove. if it's some other kind i donno ...

When are we going to invent a dipstik with a thermister at the tip and an temp gauge for the handle?? Or is that availble?? Harley Davidson has an oil cap with a temp gauge. You would get the best reading from being in the oil in an running crankcase.

I already have one of those... I can't find ad for the place I got it from, but they advertise in Panarama and/or Excellence. It works good.

John,

You can test it by boiling it in water. Put it in a pan of water with a thermometer in it, heat the water up and it should fully open at a specific temp (that I can't recall off the top of my head). We are talking about the factory oil thermostat from a flat six, right?

As far as checking engine oil temps, I use one of those little non contact IR guns. They can be found for around $80, and are great little tools, that you'll find lots of uses.

You can figure if the engine is at operating temps, the oil filter is going to be right at the same temp as the oil.
