I was very pleased to find this forum on the net - it is exactly what I need.
I have a '73 2.0 that I picked up for next to nothing and I am just starting it's resurection. The car came with enough parts to build two cars, unfortunately not enough to build one good car. So far I have stripped the drivetrain and interior and I am in the process of cutting out the rust and welding in patches. As this is a Canadian car, it is badly rusted and needs extensive work.
My main concern is the longitudinals. Both the inner and outer on both sides were rusted right through on the bottom causing the car to sag. I am going to patch up the longitudinals as best as I can and then, to be safe, install a frame stiffening kit I ordered from Brad Mayeur. Anyone have any experience with these? If my exterior measurements are all correct and my door gaps look good then my frame should be aligned, right?
I'm also seriously considering a V6 swap (I think a V8 has too much hp and will only end up breaking stuff) and was wondering who has had experience with this conversion. Which motor is best? Is the 6 an easier fit than the 8? Does smaller cubic inches mean easier to cool - i.e. smaller rad?
I look forward to gleaning advice from the numerous experienced and avid 914 fans out there and, hopefully, be able to provide some of my own as I go along.

There are plenty of threads here on replacing the pieces you describe. Do it right and then add the kit. There was a thread posted today on treating rust in those areas. Very worthwhile reading.
If your planning on a conversion go with the V8. Some V6's have vibration problems and if your going to do it, more hp = more fun

Wow, you are a brave man, if that is all that is left of the long and you have sag already, I would find a doner tub and transfer everything to it. It sounds like you are building a 914 from scratch anyway. Since it is a unibody car, the frame is what you showed laying on the floor. Welcome to the club. There is lots of info here on every aspect of what you want to do with the car. Anything from bone stock restoration to a mild to wild V8 conversion. Where to get parts and how to put them on. Good luck with your car and please, do post pictures of your car.

Too bad I just saw this post, I was down in Simcoe and Niagara last week, working and looking at another 914. I could have buzzed over and taken a good look at it for you. (I rented a 300m with the HEMI- 208km/h on the QEW and still pulling)
From what I see, keep looking for a good tub and put all your best parts on it. If it's your first restoration and it is as bad as you say it might just frustrate you and will never get done.
The longs on the car I was looking at weren't as bad as your longs and I wouldn't offer him $200 for it. He wanted $2000 and I laughed at him.

You'll be happy with the extra stifness (and so will she ).
