Hello, guys. One more thing that it's going to make me crazy. My 914/4 has only four (4) gears. I haven't seen anywere this characteristic. Could you tell me something about this?

Which gears do you have? 1-4 or 2-5? You know first is left and back, yes?

You could also have a VW transaxle instead of a Porsche transaxle. Or perhaps it just won't go into first, which
is a sign it needs a rebuild.

First is left and forward, and "lefter" is reverse. Right and forward there is nothing.

It may be a stupid question but do you have the original shift knob? The 914 has an unusual shift pattern with first gear down and left under reverse.

I think that is the original shift knob, with only 4 gears. but also under reverse isn't first gear.

Reiche has the correct pattern, if you don't then you have the wrong one.
You need to pull the shift lever to the left and pull backward. There is supposed to be a bit of 'lock-out' to ensure you don't go into reverse when upshifting to second.

You have a 72? They have very sloppy gear linkage. Time to replace the bushings, and re-adjust the linkage. It may be the transmission is badly damaged also.

Then you either don't have a 914 gearbox, or the gearbox you have has been seriously damaged or modified. The shift pattern on ALL 914s is the one shown in Reiche's post. Do a search here and look at the photos of 914 gearboxes on this site and compare them to the one in your car. If it looks the same, then it's most likely you're actually using 2nd as 1st, and 1st is inoperative for some reason.

plus, after all this time using 2nd for 1st, your clutch is probably down to the metal as well!

make sure the linkage is adjusted right, replace all worn bushings and voila! 5-speed ...

unless the PO put a 915 gearbox in your car, in which case you can consider yourself very lucky ...
