914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Any Cali boys wanna make some $$$

Posted by: Jake Raby Jan 26 2005, 01:29 PM

I am trying to cut a deal on a whole stash of Type IV engine parts, enough to absolutely fill a large U haul truck!

The shipping expense is impeding my progress with the purchase and I just wondered if any body out there that has plenty of time on their hands would like to make some bucks hauling some junk here to aircooled heaven to be "modified"...

It would have to be done sometime soon, like within the next month..

If anyone is interested, let me know!

Am I crazy??

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 01:33 PM

If I can get the approval of my boss (girlfriend) I could do it. I am currently unemployed and need the money. So how much are we talking about? IPB Image Oh ya, where in CA?

Posted by: Toast Jan 26 2005, 01:35 PM

Well, I'm not a Cali Boy, but I may be interested. I don't see where you are located on the board. So could you tell me from where to where please?

Posted by: skline Jan 26 2005, 01:43 PM

Oh come on, he is in Aircooled Heaven, cant you read? IPB Image

Posted by: GWN7 Jan 26 2005, 01:45 PM

Sounds like someting I'd do. IPB Image IPB Image

All I'd have to do is get to CA first and then to Georgia. IPB Image

How much weight we talking about? You would need a heavy enough tow veichle to handle any real weight?

Why not have the parts strapped to pallets or in a crate layered and have them shipped by truck? Two crates?

Posted by: Toast Jan 26 2005, 01:45 PM

Hey scott, IPB Image

Sounds like a fun haul drive from the Twilight Zone to Aircooled Heaven. IPB Image

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 01:48 PM

What would forward air charge for the lot? If anything I could facilitate the shipping if that were more economical. I deffinetly would be into this though (Back off Toast, I got dibs and you have a job IPB Image )

Posted by: ! Jan 26 2005, 02:03 PM

$50 on Toast....

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 02:06 PM

Mike, you would just be losing another $50 on a woman, and this time with no service. Don't you get tired of that IPB Image

Posted by: Toast Jan 26 2005, 02:08 PM

Will goat-boy be there? IPB Image

Posted by: Toast Jan 26 2005, 02:10 PM

We can do this Smokey and the Bandit style.

I'm in! For the mud wrasslin', and maybe for some driving.

Posted by: Jake Raby Jan 26 2005, 02:20 PM

Guys, this is ALOT of parts...

75 engine cases, hundreds of heads, dozens of sheetmetal sets- Etc..

And I just bought 25 engines in Florida- They are delivering those!

Posted by: Aaron Cox Jan 26 2005, 02:32 PM

when? IPB Image

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 02:33 PM

As long as the amount doesn't require the use of a vehicle that would require a special licence, then I am your man. I have driven bob tails and such before. I have also driven from eastern PA to San Diego in 3 days using a truck with a govenor that wouldn't allow me over 65. No eat, no sleep, and you get the parts fast. So, when?

Toast,
If, and I mean if, then I am Smokey.

How about BJ and the bear, you can be the chimp IPB Image

Posted by: Aaron Cox Jan 26 2005, 02:35 PM

mike... toasty one will kick your ass. IPB Image IPB Image

Posted by: spunone Jan 26 2005, 02:57 PM

Hey Jake if he gets there after the 1st of Feb maybe he can bring stuff back . on return trip? win win both ways just my .02 IPB Image

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 03:00 PM

I would be glad to. I have an interview in PA this Mon and I will be getting back on the 1st of Feb. Any time after that should be just fine. Hell, if we need to we can do two truck loads and have two drivers, but I don't know about the cost. I just told the girlfriend that I was doing this (she will get over it) so I am definetly in.

Posted by: vortrex Jan 26 2005, 03:03 PM

doesn't make much sense to drive the truck back when you can get a plane ticket for $200-$300.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 03:05 PM

Depends on if I will be returning with stock as well, but I agree.

Posted by: SLITS Jan 26 2005, 03:12 PM

By estimation of 75 cases, 200 heads and some tin....about 7,000 lbs.....legal limit on a Ford SuperDuty Stakebed with a Class C license.

I think Toast and Mike should make the trip to crackerland........

Have a nice trip.....

Posted by: Mueller Jan 26 2005, 03:13 PM

I want to know where the stock pile is...maybe we can raid it before it goes back East IPB Image IPB Image

It wouldn't be worth it............In a pile of aluminum scrap like that, the number of type 4 Porsche stuff would be minimal.

Don't F with me Mike! I'll bring a gun to make sure all of these parts make it to their destination unmolested! IPB Image Ya'll best back off now, go on, git.

SLITS,
7K would fit with a large Ryder, U hual, etc. No? I had 4950lbs in the smallest rental I could get. It did look like it was gonna split behind the cab, though.

Yes, our Superduty Fleet are stakebed and will take a max of about 7000 lbs (leagally). If the JewHaul was a dual rear axle superduty chassis, you would be legal, but slow. The fuel with the 355s (as I remember) they used to put in them or if they now use 460s would kill you and Jake.

Posted by: Toast Jan 26 2005, 04:05 PM

Slits has the licence and can probably con his bro out of use of the semi.
Slits could be the not-so-skini truck driver. But we would have to get him a hound dog.

Mike wants to be Smokey, so he could fend off Muller as long as he can keep his car from doing mid-air 360's and landing in mud.

I'll be the bandit and drive a black 914. (just need some black krylon.)

And I will do donughts in the mud after wrasseling Dr. Evil and will spray mud all over Zois after collecting my winnings. IPB Image

Guys you are doing this as a private individual, DOT won't stop you. Run as heavy as the truck can handle. Rent a box truck with a diesel engine and load it up and start trekkin.

Whats the cost of a truck rental to Ga. ??

compared to what ?

Ryder and Penske have similar sites and pricing calculators.
JARTran too, probably, but i've never used them.

i think Jake should be looking at rail rates, actually...

Posted by: Cap'n Krusty Jan 26 2005, 06:13 PM

I looked at that! Serious bux and that $6K doesn't include the 2500 miles worth of fuel, which would be somewhere from $500-1K, depending on the size of the truck. The Cap'n

Posted by: spunone Jan 26 2005, 06:19 PM

I think Jake might want to check southwest air and put 1 engine in each seat should be alot cheaper. You know friends fly free IPB Image

Posted by: SLITS Jan 26 2005, 07:08 PM

UHaul

24'......7000 lb capacity........8 days.......2594 miles free......$4,109.00 + cost of fuel (420 miles per tank)....6 tanks @ 60 gal = 360 gals @ $2.00 gal...$720.00.....3 days transit....food $35.00 day=$105.00....Hotel....2 nights @ $45.00 nite=$90.00

Grand Total....$5024.00

Best way is to purchase Gaylord containers & Pallets ($20 each)....fill them....roll them into a truck..LTL to GA.....and call it even. 7000 lbs is not that much weight.

But this is all guessing without knowing where from and where to exactly.

Posted by: Jake Raby Jan 26 2005, 07:12 PM

Damn, when I moved home from Cali i had the biggest Penske they make and it cost me 1500.00 for the truck and then it cost 1K for fuel!

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 07:13 PM

Is there anything that SLITS doesn't know? $35 for food/day, thats some good grub. Hotel?! What is that? I sleep in the cab and eat fast food. IPB Image Crude, but effective.

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 26 2005, 07:16 PM

Penske was the cheapest by far when I moved from PA to CA. U-Haul was the most expensive with Ryder being the runner up.

Posted by: spunone Jan 26 2005, 07:18 PM

Thats one Hell of a quess SLITS IPB Image

Ok Mike, I thought of that....McDonalds breakfast $5.00, McDoanlds lunch $5.00, McDonalds dinner $7.00....$17.00 and you can join in the class action "FAT" suit and recover your money someday.

If you stop anywhere else it's going to average at least $8.00 per meal, not including tip you cheap _________?

Now if you like road snacks and fluids....how much do you add?

Sleep in a truck....head on oh mighty Doctor...."Good Buddy" just might have his way with you in the rest stop at night. Just make sure you carry a lot of KY or it's gonna be hard to set in the seat for the rest of the trip.

Posted by: mrihop Jan 26 2005, 07:38 PM

34 hours would mean you'd be averaging 65 miles/hour on the ENTIRE trip. I'd imagine a truck like that would average less than that!

And not to cut Dr. Evil from his quest to see the sights between here and GA (there are none)...Jake, if the mysterious supply of parts is in or near LA...I can supply the personnel & gaylords to pack it, bring it to our facility and ship it. Of course, we would have to charge for personnel time to pack & the gaylords/pallets and I can get you a rate to where ever you are.

And Mike, you might want to check in TJ for Pedro's Truck Rental & Taco Stand to see what his rates are.

SLITS, no worries here if you can get it done easier and cheaper. I am only interested in it if there is a NEED for a driver. I am the wheel man. If I don't go I will just start on my next clients car, a V8 conversion.

Jake,
each summer on my way to vacation i always pass these used equipment lots off of I-5.assuming you could find something reliable it might be more cost effective to purchase an old truck. You could drive it one way and put Dr.Evil on a plane home, then decide if you want to keep it or sell it.Even if you sold it at a loss i think you could still come out ahead.I don't know much about the L.A. area but i found this site on the web. usedtrucks.com There was three box vans 22 to 24 feet for under $5000.I am not sure they are big enough for your needs or reliable enough to make the trip but i just thought i would throw the idea out there.
Good Luck, Paul

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 27 2005, 01:19 AM

Paul,
I thought about that too. Until I realized that I would be the one fixing it if it broke down. Eh, what ever. I'm in.

Posted by: 914 novice Jan 27 2005, 02:03 AM

Mike,
Notice I did say reliable!!!
Another idea would be to purchase a more expensive truck with 100% financing. He wouldn't have the the big hit of the rental or the down payment and depending on how much he spent he could use the truck for 6 months to a year and still stay in range of what it would cost him to rent the truck for a few days.
Cheers Mike!!
Good luck with your interview!!
Time to drag my fat butt to bed,I am thinking that my ideas are really good which usually means i have had too much to drink and am making a complete fool of myself!!!! IPB Image

Posted by: skline Jan 27 2005, 10:14 AM

Actually, that really isnt that bad of an idea. If Jake has a use for a truck, he could lease or buy one not too old and sell it out there when he is done and most likely recover most of his money if he could find a good deal on one out here. I would keep that option open.

Posted by: 914 novice Jan 28 2005, 10:43 PM

The cheapest and easiest way to accomplish the task is to ship the material via Common Carrier...LTL (less than truckoad).

First, Jake would need a bunch of suckers, errr, friends to package the material, either in large boxes or on pallets for nothing.

The facility he is obtaining the material from should have a load dock or forklift at a minimum. The crates/pallets then could be loaded into a trailer (no load dock, use a pallet jack).
