marv- have you seen my falkens?

go with the falken azenis. theyre as close to slick as you get... (they say 100 treadwear, but its more like 40)

Posted by: Marv's3.6six Jan 27 2005, 12:12 AM

Falken A......... Aaron you posted quick!! Where to get Falkens? IPB Image

Falken A......... Aaron you posted quick!! Where to get Falkens?

i may have a hookup on them.....

but americas tire co.....

also... id advise a 50 series. i have 50's on a 15 and its great for AX, but it puts the revs up there on the freeway..

hmm..45 may be okay in a 16

IPB Image

Posted by: Marv's3.6six Jan 27 2005, 12:17 AM

I'm thinkin I need 45's the tech data sez the section width is 8.1" most 50's are about 1/4" wider. I got no room!!!!!
I loves the super low profile anyway. IPB Image

Posted by: Aaron Cox Jan 27 2005, 12:18 AM

marv man....
they only come in a 55 series for a 205 on a 16" rim.
they come in a 215 45 16 though IPB Image

by all reports, the falken's are great -- probably unbeatable for the price and a balance between street and AX.

if you really want to be competitive at AX, you might consider another set of wheels wrapped in kumho victoracers ($$, sticky) or hoosier's ($$$$$ stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicky). this is totally unecessary, though, if you're just getting started at AX.

Did a check of comparable 215X45 tires, and most are tooooo wiiiide at 8.4"
Think I'll stick with 205's don't want no rubbage!

I have not yet had a chance to try 'em out at an auto-x, but the new set of Toyo T1-S I recently got seem really nice. They even come in the 205-45-16 size you are looking for.

Here is the http://frisbyracetire.com/t1s2004.htm for the width information.

Anyone driving on this tire?

Posted by: Joe Ricard Jan 27 2005, 06:33 AM

Azenis are nowhere near a tread wear of 40.. They are admired by the STS crowd for being the stickiest street tire available. The side walls are very stiff but not as stiff as my Kumho R comounds. When Azenis are put on a heavier car for example Honda Prelude they can be worthless in 2 runs unless allowed to cool off. I would imagine if you drive the car hard your results will be similar. I have heard they are OK in the rain but you got to be careful.

Posted by: DuckRyder Jan 27 2005, 07:04 AM

I'm a little confused about what you want, as none of the tires you listed seem to be "competition" tires, which is what you want if you really want the stickyest without concern for wear.

Hoosiers is what you run if you want to win around here...

Posted by: drgchapman Jan 27 2005, 08:25 AM

Hoosiers..............check out which tire won most of the a/x classes at nationals. IPB Image

I screwed up IPB Image and bought the track version ® designation, but was top time in the 2.0 class my last a/x last year. The (A) designation is stickier yet and going on my car this year.

I rest my case.

Marv,
this one is rated M+S (Mud & Snow). I doubt you'll like the performance for autocross.

Another option is Yokohoma A032R. They cost more than the Falken Azenis, but are a bit stickier I believe.

I have these on my Saturn. Very impressed as a passenger car tire, but wouldn't put it on a 914.

Posted by: Marv's3.6six Jan 27 2005, 10:03 AM

Ok M+S means mud and snow....did not know that.

I would like DOT legal tires but as sticky as they come. Not just for AX.

Thanx IPB Image

Posted by: anthony Jan 27 2005, 10:04 AM

For AX, another consideration is what class you want to run in. Local PCA rules in my area state that you need a DOT approved tire with a wear rating of 100 or higher to stay in stock class. R-compound tires or slicks put you in a higher class.

Posted by: ! Jan 27 2005, 10:10 AM

I just picked up the G-Force for Manfred....problem with REALLY sticky tires and driving them on the road to the track is that you get a LOT of punctures...ask me how I know....

Posted by: Britain Smith Jan 27 2005, 12:07 PM

Just out of curiosity, did you get those 16x7's off ebay recently? The reason I ask is because there was a set that I really wanted located in the bay area, but I missed.

Posted by: Marv's3.6six Jan 27 2005, 12:30 PM

Well the car is not stock by any means, the PO raced it in 99 & 2000 was the winner in class HI both years PCASD. I have a set of early 6X15 fuchs and some 205 Hoosiers, which is why I want DOT but sticky for the 16's............. IPB Image

Posted by: ! Jan 27 2005, 12:54 PM

Bought 15x7 Cookie Cutters....

Posted by: Sammy Jan 27 2005, 01:42 PM

In order to be DOT legal (2 years ago when I checked)
tires have to have a minimum treadwear rating of 50 and 3/32" tread depth, maybe 5/32" caint remember.
Anywho, that is zackly what victoracers come with. Barely legal.
Hoosiers are very good, but my favorite is the victoracer.
don't run em in rain tho, they don't like that.

******HI-JACK WARNING*************

Just a short one IPB Image

I gots some W/T for sale:

A3SO4 Hoosiers......225 X45 X 15, bout half gone on 7 X 15 Cookies, 4 ea. $450. ....even got a pic.
Marv:
With a 3.2L, you need tiars like these in the worst way...
but with stock fenders, there's no way these will fit....unless you're into the jackem'up 4X4 look. IPB Image

No flare necessary. Just trim the inside lip of the fender and a couple of passes with a base ball bat and you can cram some 225-50-15's under there.

Just to clear this up, the Falken's, which are great, have a claimed treadwear of 200 are no where near the stick of my Yokohama A032's.

The Yok's are amazing and are extremly responsive.
Pricey at over $800 for a set. Treadwear of 60.

The Hoosiers are likely the best for a/x, but you'll destroy them immediately on the road. ( 60 minute life ) at over $800 again. No treadwear rating. Race only yet DOT's IPB Image

So that being said, go Falken or get a second set of rims for a/x stickies to be competitive.

I drove my A3SO4s around town, to the track & those tires have about 150 AX passes on em'.....prolly 500-800 miles on em' total.....and they're prolly half gone.

Don't believe all things you read about them. 2 years ago, I ran R3SO3s. 200 passes, 150 minutes of track time, 300-400 of street driving (WAG). Still have em' and they are a touch better than the SO4s.

With the suspension settings they like, they hold up VERY well
on a 914. Heavier cars with the wrong settings eat them up.

Cool IPB Image I've got a set of those...

I'll switch between the Yok's and Hoosiers for a/x.
Only Yok's for the wet.

Yes, Lots of us are running them. They stick pretty good , I still wouldn't run them on the street. I did run to town and back once just to scuff the new off them.
good price I took them to the Airforce base hobby shop and mounted balanced for 10 bucks.

Stiff side wall took 2 people to get them suckers on the rim. I haven'y found cheaper than tire rack. Ordered Monday were at my house Tuesday UPS.
