914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Group buy 914 dip stick temperature gauges

Posted by: Harpo Sep 29 2014, 03:32 PM

I have always wanted one of these but when I contacted Mainely by design he had no more and was not sure if he was going to even make any more. I have gotten enough interest that he is willing to make another run of 50. Originally he told me that I needed to get 24 members to commit. Well I now have 33 members who have expressed interest.

The current price is 49.95 and after the group buy the price will be going up.

Bob is about 3 weeks before all of his subcomponents will arrive and he can start building the parts for us. Please hold tight once he is ready to ship I will post payment instructions.

These are really useful and mine is accurate, as well. I loaned mine to Phil W during Okteenerfest to verify that his oil temp gauge was accurate. Everyone should own one.

Good afternoon everyone,

The next build is for 50 units and we already have more members than units. I will inquire with Bob to see if he is interested in increasing the size of the initial run or doing a second run. I will update the original list with the first 50 units. I will also create a list of those members on the waiting list.

There are a few members who have ordered multiple units (myself included) I will reduce my order to one, will those members do the same?

No money is being collected at this time

Thanks

David

I'm glad to be in on this G.B. ! i borrowed a friend's over the past weekend at Octeenerfest because my gauge was showing i was running a bit hot but needed to verify it. with the oil dipstick meter i was able to confirm that my gauge was pretty much in line with the gauge. I think it was reading maybe 10 degrees off when hot so that is good to know, - beer.gif

This run is for only 50 pieces because that is what he ordered enough sub components for. He will consider a second run after the first run. The sub components are scheduled to arrive next week when he will begin assembly. The 914 model is not a current option on his website. When he is ready to start shipping I will let you know

Coincidentally, what is the average oil temperature safe range on a 2.0 /4? What is the temp once it hits the red on the later style gauge (smaller red area) and at what temperature is it approaching not safeto drive temperature?

Hey David....If it is time to pay up you could post that and maybe all on the list will see it and comply....I would.

After that post a deadline with the list of paid and unpaid and maybe you could PM just the remaining noting the deadline.

After that fill the first order with guys from the second run list...... Just a thought smile.gif

I believe it would park at ambient temperature unless engine is at temperature from use.

Mine came yesterday. Thanks for organizing this!

Posted by: narino Oct 25 2014, 03:10 PM

I don't think it's an issue, but thought I'd check.

My Mainely gauge sits a bit loose in the dip stick holder. Is this an issue? Sorry if that's a dumb question. I'm so used to using force to push in or pull out the old dipstick that this one seemed odd. It falls right in, no "pinch" when it's all the way in. It has very little play at the bottom of the stick, from what I can tell. But at the top where the dip stick tube flares out there is about 1/8" play.

Thoughts?

j

Posted by: pilothyer Oct 25 2014, 03:45 PM

I have 3 of these that I just received, and with all of them the rubber seal slips over the dip stick tube for a perfect fit and seal.

Posted by: narino Oct 25 2014, 07:52 PM

I was not aware there was a rubber seal for the dipstick.

I guess that solves that. Now hopefully this part is not NLA.

Posted by: pilothyer Oct 25 2014, 09:44 PM

Did yours not come with the rubber sleeve at the top ????

Posted by: dlkawashima Oct 25 2014, 10:09 PM

If I understand what Jorge is saying, he did not realize there was a rubber sleeve at the top of the dipstick. That sleeve is tight and you need some force to get it to seat correctly.

Posted by: narino Oct 27 2014, 12:03 PM

Jerry - Thanks for that last bit of info I needed to figure out what I was missing. I guess mine accidentally got shipped without the rubber sleeve.

I just talked to Bob at Mainely, what a great guy. He's putting one in the mail for me.

Got mine, but I have to say, the gauge is pretty small, exactly the same size as a quarter. My poultry thermometer is bigger.

Not sure if I could read this without reading glasses. Yeah, I'm an old F&#k.

Yeah, but let's face it, if your poultry runs hot it could be a ruined Thanksgiving, and cranky family members. Now THAT's a disaster.

agree.gif It's not a huge gauge, and I didn't think I'm that old, but apparently I am as I also need my glasses to read it. BUT...it's good to have it so I can check the temp if I want to!

I need to see if I have that rubber sleeve thing as well, as I didn't feel like it sat in the tube particularly well either.

For Sale: Hey, I got one and it works fine, but I have changed my mind..... I do not want to use it. I paid $59.94 with shipping.

If you are willing to buy it, that is what I would like to get. I saved the mailer and the paperwork inside, you get that too.

I don't know the answer to your question, but my gauge measured about 195 degrees after driving for an hour in 70 degree ambient temperature.
