I'm in for one with the silver button. Can you take a pic of this new gauge? The PP pic is nice, but doesn't show me what you're actually selling.

The kit should include instructions and just the face plate (Shown in Aaron's avitar) and a backing plate. That's it. 3 years ago, this kit was $100, so even if Aaron can keep it at or around $150, it is still a screaming deal. If it is like the ones before, you will need:

911 combo gauge
2 part epoxy
Dremel tool

You basically take the 911 combo gauge and 914 fuel gauge completely appart. From there, you put together one 904 gauge. Somewhere at home I have lots of pictures of the last one I put together almost 3 years ago. It is one of those projects you can do while watching a movie or something. Nothing hard, but takes some time to look good. If I find pics, I will post them.

One silver button for me. Now to find an old lady to mug IPB Image

Posted by: azbill Jan 28 2005, 09:12 AM

If you want to spend from $450 to $500 you can buy a complete gauge from Palo Alto or North Hollywood. Even at $150 plus the cost of a 911 gauge and your time this is a buy. Stop the sniffeling and step up to the plate if you want one.

I'm so excited about this, I already have the housing cut and the gauges ready to install. IPB Image Just waiting for the kit to finish it. IPB Image

Posted by: maf914 Jan 28 2005, 09:31 AM

What type senders are needed for oil temp and oil pressure? And where are these located on a T4 four cylinder?

Is the oil temp sender a special 911 piece?

Is the oil pressure sender the typical VDO dual sender used for warning light and gauge?

I'd like to get a kit if these issues can be worked out.

Yep, just use the dual sender unit.

Oh man, it has been so long since I have worked on the 4's. I believe the temp sender is located on the bottom of the engine screwed into a smaller black cirlcle plate on the corner of the oil sump? I think anyway? If you don't have a temp sender, you will have to buy one. Otherwise, I think the one that is in there will work fine. IPB Image

Yup, you need a "taco plate" for the sender, too.

Just don't do what I did once before, make sure the gauge you use is still working, and make sure you can get a sender for it. I found a really nice gauge, but North Hollywood couldn't get a sender for it. IPB Image

Posted by: Aaron Cox Jan 28 2005, 10:22 AM

the non console equipped cars had an indash temp unit. these run off the same sender as the tcoplate console sender.

the pressure gauge runs off the dual sender from VDO.

I posted this in the other thread, but since this is the "official thread", I thought I would re-post my offering.

For those that don't want to perform the surgery involved with assembling these kits, but would want one of these cool tripple gauges, I am offering to assemble the kit (using components supplied by you) for a small fee or trade of parts. The components required are:

1. The kit
2. 914 "combo" Fuel Gauge
3. 911 "combo" Temp/Pressure Gauge

The kits are not overly difficult to assemble, but they take time and patience to look nice.

I have not done the re-screening of the temp and pressure gauge faces (as shown in the Pelican Parts pic above), but may attempt it as I have a few ideas on how to economically do this.

PM or Email me for details.

John

In the "official" thread, I'd like a silver button please.

Also, I need a 911 combo gauge too. Any particular year 911 gauge I should look for?

Thanks,
Joe

Damn, whats up with the attitude? I was just asking what the change in pricing was all about. I wasn't "sniffeling" nor do I appreciate the accusation. If I posted that something would be one price and then posted that I would have to raise that price 50%, I would give a reason out of courtesy. I am sure that the price they decide on will be fair. I was just wondering about what caused the price change.

Posted by: 914forme Jan 28 2005, 01:25 PM

Since I wrote the original post (Not Aaron) with pricing it was an estimate of where I was shotting for. But I asked if somebody wanted to take this project over, it is not a good time for me to do these. Aaron steps up to the plate and builds a kit that people wanted - BTW the Bird sold them at $150 4-5 years ago. Aaron's cost of living and manufacturing is higher in California, than I being in Ohio. The point is Aaron needs to make his $1 for doing these - trust me he will not retire rich from doing these, it just does not happen.

Aaron rock on
IPB Image

And thank you for pulling these together when I could not.

Heir Dr. Sorry if the posts got confusing, but life changes and things come up. Aaron is now the supplier and I am a a simple customer just like you. He sets the prices and I am sure he is not trying to gouge anyone.

914forme, thanks for the info. I was just curious, nothing else. I too make things for people and wonder what things cause prices to fluctuate. Considering that the aluminum bezels are $150 for a set, $150 for this kit is still a deal, no doubt. Thanks for stepping up on this Aaron. I would like one with the button hole, please IPB Image

I bought the last kit from PP a few years ago and have artwork for the reorientation of the combo gauge faces. I will gladly donate a copy to you for the project. This is a greatly needed detail that the kit lacks and most don't realize its importance at first glimpse.

Aaron: How many kits are being made in this first lot (x, 25, y, 50, z)?

yes. you will need to run another set of wires to the front from the sender to your gauge. i would run them with the main harness up through the tunnel and all the way up to the rear of the gauge....

Hi. Are you having just the face plate produced (stamped) or the rear plate aswell? Will it be satin black with the original style font and also with re-oriented gauge numerals? Reason I ask is I am definitely interested, as long as it looks right. I have already chopped a couple of gauges with a dremel and soldered the metal back together, but to fab that rolled edge would be a task for sure. I was considdering having a die made but wasn't sure of the demand for the finished product. So if you're taking the leap... I'm in. Only thing that bothered me about the original kit that I think pelican sold was you could see the edges of the coloured filters at the edge of the meter windows. Can this be avoided? -- Kris

Posted by: Aaron Cox Mar 16 2005, 12:20 AM

most likely will be stamped. or, laser cut and machined rolled edges.....

ill be getting on this project soon.....

stay tight guys....made exacrly like the originals, fronts and backs, satin black face, silkscreened letters.

Its good to hear that the exams are behind you. How do you know one went "bad" is that on gut feeling or the test score? If on feeling you might have done all right. Don't go in funk until you get the results. Long story short, I did that to my self on the comprehensives for the certified general appraiser tests. Lasted for 4 weeks got the notice in the mail I passed. Lots of head bashing for nothing. Hang in there have positive thoughts. beer.gif

I need some help with the wiring of my new combo gauge from Palo Alto:

The old gauge had a red light for generator, red light for low fuel, oil temp light and oil pressure light green and brake warning light red. The new combo gauge has green, red and blue. What from the old gauge is supposed to go into what on the new gauge?

The combo gauges each have 3 connections. ground (ground symbol), positive 12 volts (+ symbol) and the gauge sensor (G), right? Comparing old to new: for example, in the factory manual (914-6) and for my old gauge, the oil temperature sensor, #11, went to the gauge. There was a connection #10 called "terminal #15" that went to both the oil gauge and the fuel gauge (I think). Is that the 12 volts for the gauge? Ground was provided through the casing?

For the old oil pressure light, there is a green/red wire on the outside connection and 2 red/white on the inside connection. the red/white wire seems to go to all the bulb connections. Is the green/red the old sensor and the red/white 12 volt power, or what?

I didn't label wire #12, fuel sensor well. Is it a green wire do you know?

Finally, according to the manual, going across the back of the old gauge from right to left on the horizontal diameter, there was:

#9, oil pressure light
#8, brake warning light
#0, not used
#5, generator light

but, in fact, according to my notes, #0 was used. there is a black wire on the outside and the red/white on the inside connector. Do you know what this was/is?

E-mail sent Aaron.

Okee dokee, I have taken the tourch from Aaron. I have the information needed to hopefully get another run of these done. I will post updates here. Aaron is understandably very busy with school and has already done much of the ground work. I will source out a silkscreener and manufacturer.

My goal will be the same as before. I am not looking to make a bunch of money off of these. I really just want to see them offered, costs covered and not die off.

I will keep in touch. biggrin.gif

Thank you Aaron pray.gif the 904 kits will live! mueba.gif

Yep, just spoke with Jeff. I will borrow one of his kits to make sure things look as they should and he also set me in the direction to someone who would have the time to turn these out.

For the face plates we were thinking instead of powdercoating them, anodize them. No material build up or grainy look to them then.

Cool! Things are coming together a little already! boldblue.gif

Nice job there Clay - looks good. Is that one of the Pelican kits, Don and My kits? Or the new versions Aaron / Rootwerks version????

I will never do another kit run so Dan you have to run it from here. I will tell you that the fronts are a pain to make, the rears are easy. I simple program and a laser cutter and a local guy here still does cad palting for the aerospace contractors in the area. So if you are having issues with the rears let me know, I can get them knocked out in a couple of days. The front require a fixture setup and milling or a die and stamp process which is how I orginally wanted to do it until I saw the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.$$

But the offer is open if it is the rears you need.

It was built from a Pelican kit. I bought 2 of them when they were selling, with the intent of putting one in Betty's car and one in mine. Well, I decided to put a Getty dash in my car, so the new unopened kit sat for years in my shed (later in my garage).

Now it belongs to Lawrence.

I don't know if he wants it for his /6 or for the PURPLEcar.

I do have one suggestion. On the back plates, make them to where you can use the later fuel gauge. I modified the plate to use the later gauge, and it was much easier than resoldering the wires for the early fuel gauge.

Yeah thats what everybody wants its not that hard just rotate it in cad and have the holes popped in with the laser. Quite simple actually, didn't do it cause I never thought about it. headbang.gif
