914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Let's talk: Making 914world swag

Posted by: Rusty Oct 10 2014, 07:46 AM

This issue has come up a couple of times recently.

The policy is http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=65693 and is pretty darned lenient. Want to make something for yourself? Cool.

Ya see, the bandwidth, maintenance, hardware and hardware upgrades for 914 World are paid for by Andy. Out of his pocket. Yep. No, he doesn't accept donations.

So, someone making money (even beer money) using the sites logos is a problem. If the OWNER of the site doesn't do it, why should anyone else? You certainly wouldn't get away with that from any other company.

Want to make a limited run of something? Contact the admins & be prepared to send a sample to one of them (we'll return it to you). We won't take forever to respond. It should go without saying, setting up an eBusiness making 914world stuff is way over the line.

Questions, please PM one of the admins and ask. beerchug.gif

Well it is obvious this was directed towards me. For the record I did get approval and permission from Andy. Don't you guys talk to each other? You get the messages.

I am closing the Targa Products store; no more link. If you are one of the 3 people who bought a shirt or a sticker...congratulations! it is now a one of a kind rare item.

I will save the $3 I made; hopefully it will double in 10 years and I can buy a beer.

Also, FYI, providing a sample for the admins is difficult when you need a minimum run of 25 or 50 to make one in the first place.

I am sure it is my own fault and I deserve it. When I read "it's ok", I actually thought "IT'S OK".

Whatever, here it is for posterity. Hell, Andy even sent me the Photoshop files for the logo.

SIR Andy
"I'm OK with the designs as long as you use our new 914World logo that doesn't use the Porsche font and you don't put 914World in the store name.

If you want to, i can also send you the font and/or Photoshop file for the 914World logo ...

Andy is pretty cool, in that he spends a ton of time to make sure we all have a place to discuss our passion. He takes nothing for his work. I would think at the very least a percentage of profits donated to toys for tots program (to whom out banner "fees" are paid. Would be appropriate.
Other than that, yeah make what you want, with his blessing.

I also am doing this out of passion. I love to do art, I love these cars. Just want to spread the enthusiasm..

Honestly if there were buyers and a profit I would be putting up a banner, etc. But I don't have the extra $$$ to do that now and I am not seeing much response to the store anyways. There isn't much actual profit built into the pricing since these are individual products and not a "group buy" volume kind of thing...so essentially they are retail priced but with custom design.

It's for fun and "beer money" as you call it. If anything, a couple extra bucks to spend on the 914 since I have a rule not to spend any family income on the car. I have made 4.50 in actual profit. And I can't get it because they only payout when I get to a minimum amount.

I am not even considering the time to design, draw, or even maintain the store. Plus I will be hit for income tax too. So there goes the $4..

I don't want to piss people off; especially Andy. He has been cool about this all but I get hit from different angles; threatened with legal action...... It ain't worth it.

I'll just stick to cars and carbs.....last on the posters too. At least here.

7T,

This post was intended as a friendly reminder as the issue has come up more than once in the past few months from more than one person.

But since you self-identified (in a passive-aggressive way) as one of those who couldn't follow the existing policy, I'll reply. It's nothing that hasn't been explained to you one-on-one.

The policy has been in place for years with the intent to allow members to make small runs of stuff to fill the gap the Admin team decided not to take on. We don't want the site running or associated with an eCommerce site. It was never intended for someone to setup an eBusiness and hawk 914world wares.

Aside from being one of the coolest guys around, Andy's efforts and contribution to the 914 community around the world are unparalleled. He's made more of an impact than any single person since the cars rolled off the factory line. Please show a little respect for his property (914 World) which he generously shares with us.

Posted by: 7TPorsh Oct 10 2014, 10:41 AM

Rusty, I have already taken out the store. As I said I don't want to piss off anyone especially Andy. Don't think I have...doesn't matter at this point.

I am aware of the policy, that's why I got approval. Nobody asked me to take it down; it's been up 2 months now. That's my problem. Nobody ASKED me to take it down or stop. Instead I go online to find out I am locked out and getting threatened with legal action?

So yeah Rusty, passive aggressive? no, just a bit pissed and slightly defensive. I see a different version of your friendly reminder.

....damage done...

Glad I got my shirt and stickers before the sh__ hit the fan. If 7T got permission from andy, why is this even posted.

Ya see, this isn't our first time down this road with this gentleman. idea.gif

7T went through this a few months ago during his previous venture into eBusiness when he stood up his own online "914 World Store" without talking to anyone.

This time it was a new eStore "Targa something-or-other" with mugs and shirts and stuff... none of which had been discussed.

I requested an address to which we could mail legal correspondence. There were no threats because there didn't need to be.

It was discussed, it was all discussed. Even before I started doing any kind of design.

I also agreed to stop but you opened this thread to make an example out of me. You title it let's talk but you PM me and threaten me again when I reply to the thread. Your tone here and on your PMs are different.

If this is what you refer to as going out in a blaze of glory then I'm swinging the bat for strike three. Go ahead and lock me out again.....I already said I'm done selling anything here. With or without the World name on it. Yet YOU persist. Just delete this thread too and it goes away. I won't bring it up again. Everyone else would be too scared too.

ps: there is a thread in the Member Vendors forum; maybe squash that one too.

Let's continue talking.... biggrin.gif

SOMEBODY should be doing 914 World items, for those that can't "do it ourselves"

With so much community support for member vendors of PARTS, there should be concurrent support for folks making other stuff.

So, who's doing it? Can I currently buy a 914 World sticker online?
If so, thanks in advance for sharing the link smile.gif
If not, let's keep talking. beerchug.gif

If Sir Andy wanted to do an ecommerce site he is more than capable. It would appear to me that there is a big difference between having fun with one item an exploding into cups and shirts and hats and whatever else you can dream up. This is Andy's site. The rest of us are just lucky to have him as our friend. He keeps this place going for us. We all owe him and the other admins beerchug.gif

I personally don't care, but I don't see confusion over the rules, simply whether it was approved.

Unless there is particular enjoyment in this, just verify whether Andy approved, since this is said to be his site and approval seems to be at the heart of this pissing contest.

I might be wrong but, it seems to me majority of this tread is targeted towards some of the newer members ( look at the date joined ). Most have no knowledge of the club when "Brad " was here trying to initiate some fee based membership / advertising.
For the new folks wondering what I'm referring too..please use the search function.
I surf this website way before the 914 became so popular - thus it's normal to have a lot of new members here 1) posting, calling out members for posting their comments 2) not knowing or maybe they already knew to have a link to their own 914 website.
Ok..my .02cents piratenanner.gif

Here is the short version:

- 7TPorsh asks if he can make 914World stickers
- I ask the other admins, we agree and ask him to send us a mockup of the design for approval
- His design uses the old logo with the Porsche font, we ask him to use the new logo instead and make the rest of the font a bit more readable
- He goes ahead and sets up an online store called "914World" which none of us knew he was going to do
- We told him to not use the board name for his personal store
- He never changed the logo to the newer one
- He never changed the rest of the font to be more readable
- At this point we're all scratching our heads but decide that having some stickers is a good idea and we'll let it slide
- A few weeks go by ...
- We are made aware of the fact that he now sells all sorts of 914World swag in his store besides the stickers, none of which was ever communicated to us
- We're all back to scratching our heads ...
- Rusty posts this thread
- The 914World collective membership transforms overnight into internet experts on the subject of stickers

I have no dog in this hunt but there seems to some kind of weird thing going on here. I wonder if you went to Pelican or Club or maybe Rennlist and started running a swag business with their stuff on their site if they would ok. It has nothing to do with making a profit and everything to do with infringing on property of others. Andy and McMark made world stickers once. If you want one I bet Andy and Mark would make another run.

If Andy wanted to give the ok for one item that's his business. But why in the "world" would you think that would give a person free license to start a swag business under the pretense that "this is for you guys!"

Two admins stated here it's not ok. Now can we just accept it and find something nice to talk about? This has been said before. This is not a democracy. What the admins say goes.

I did ask, I did change the font....yada yada. Oh and I added a store to make it easier for members to buy...so I wouldn;t have to do a group buy on stuff which is a big hassle. Which made it possibe to add different products.

Also why is adding a t shirt and a coffee mug so outrageous; same design. Here quote from the numerous PMs:

"It's your site (I am guessing) and ultimately I respect that. I am/was planning on having a master design available in different size stickers, coffee mugs, and t shirts/hoodies.

If you want me to cease and desist; I will. If I can continue; what restrictions do I have?"

Honestly I am the one scratching my head because I don't undrstand what the big deal is. Because nobody said NO outright.

But it's cool. I will stop...already did. Again my problem is the way it's handled. Nobody said stop. Instead I get locked and threatened.

I have been around here for 8 years and am not a newbie. I respect the site and it's members and asked for permission the whole way through.

Rusty, my suggestion is that if you are an admin, then just moderate the forum. In my mind you stepped way over the line. There are ways to do things and ways to say things.

Andy, I really thought it was all ok but if it was a problem I would have like to have heard it from you directly. And if you said "Stop, please don't"; we wouldn't be here now. If it is your site then take ownership and do your own "clean up". Rusty shouldn't be speaking for you.

Mike, ....dude, grow up!

Posted by: ThePaintedMan Oct 14 2014, 09:22 AM

Andy entrusts certain folks with the authority to look out for his (and collectively all of our) best interests. That's what Rusty, Zach, McMark, etc. are - moderators.

Speaking of taking ownership, how bout simply admitting your own mistakes, asking for forgiveness and moving on? The more excuses that you make or explanations that you give, the further in the hole you go.

You seem like a nice guy and have good intentions, but I think this debate has already been decided, so it's probably better for all of us to move on. Now everyone should have a refresher on the policy.

I'm not much for locking threads, but in this case it might not be a bad idea.

Posted by: 7TPorsh Oct 14 2014, 09:48 AM

It's fine, I'm moving on. I seem to be on the wrong side of the fence as usual. Apology...of course, here you go.

I AM SORRY. What was I thinking. I am so ashamed. Gag me with a spoon.

Let me pretend to be surprised on this one. I remember when the mouse pad was offered i snagged one because it was a great deal. So whats next removing vendors? Or even better the classifieds. Good thing the world site isnt called 914 world or anything WTF.gif

If you want to make something for yourself, go for it.

Want to use the 914World Logo on a shirt you are making to fund your event? Just let us know. I don't think we have ever denied logo use for this - just want to make sure its a high quality product.

Want to start a for-profit store selling 914World stuff? Yeah, the bar is getting raised on that.

We get wanting to offer stuff to members, and we think its awesome that folks want to do it. But we also need to make sure the stuff we are giving license to be made and sold (which we don't see a dime of, and are not asking to) is a high quality product.

Yes, good products, good prices. Profit won't even fill that cup with Starbucks dark roast.

This all just means that I can't offer 914World referenced stuff. Again, fine. Why publicize the site? Why let people know? So I again am sorry I did such an offensive action.

So soon I will be offering non 914World referenced "SWAG". Look for the new 914 SWAG store. Thanks for the name Rusty. biggrin.gif

There seems to be a demand for 914world t-shirts, trinkets and such. Perhaps the admins type folks should take care of all the grunt work, and offer said items for sale and have all the profits going Andy.

Time for you moderators to start pulling your own weight and contribute as much as our Fuhrer Andy does whip[1].gif

Posted by: Big Len Oct 14 2014, 04:19 PM

I bought several items from Gary and thought the clothing was high quality and good design. But really, it wouldn't have mattered if "914 WORLD" was on the item or not. Actually if you sell beyond our site, he may sell more without the "WORLD" reference. Seems a shame to have such infighting when we're talking about miniscule profits. After all, its not the Porsche logo we're talking about here. But, whatever.

I will put in my 2 cents again....this is something most agree on. Lets stick to the real topic and not the politics. Swag is a difficult business, especially when you do fulfillment. I have a company that does a lot of this, millions each year and fulfillment is our toughest solution to deliver. There is zero chance I would approve this kind of venture to one of my reps....too many risks and downside. It almost requires an attitude of "non profit charity" to justify one of these programs. Something you feel good doing. So, their really is no financial win as a rule.

On the Admins point, they must protect their brand. For the guy trying to do this, you must respect the legal and emotional responsibilities the Admins have relative to the brand. So you cannot expect anything other than very strict and narrow useage of the brand. If you can't live with that, move on.

My advice, create a swag or promotional task force to decide if swag is needed. Them bid out the process and see if a program could be run and the World earns a little to help run the site. Members get good products in line with branding rules.

Everyone wins. sunglasses.gif

Everyone wins... except Andy. We've hopped down this bunny trail before.

You see, selling stuff as a website means taxes and accounting: expenses, inventory, cost of good sold, profits, etc. Andy isn't in a retail business. If that's not run through his computer company, then it needs to show up on someone's personal tax return. Even if Andy just licenses the name to someone, it's another tax issue.

Either way, that potentially means an accountant or additional hours from the guy. That's another bill.

The system we have right now has worked for a very long time. Small batches, made by members for other members. beerchug.gif

A plan is a good thing. Stick with it if it works. On the profit/Andy topic, it wouldn't be difficult. The Company who runs it simply agrees to pay a licensing fee. Andy in turn claims the income and pays the tax, hopefully considerably less than he receives, but with government taxes, you never know. Should not be too time consuming, but I'm not him.

I vote for simple. Keep it as you have it.

So there's a consensus in there somewhere. From World's side don't use their logo/name, etc. unless you get specific permission, in writing. From 7T's side you're a vendor like other vendors, so follow those rules, don't base things on World (I hear Club's available?) and go for it. Is that about it?

Simple? Fair? Clear? Good, done, group hugs and then back to regularly scheduled programming.

I think that if anyone is even considering making anything, it needs to be clearly 70's vintage styling that should be presented before an independent design review board hosted in the sandbox.

If they somehow, miraculously manage to pass that design review process, there should be a random lottery to determine who will be allowed to submit one, yes one idea per quarter to the admins.

The design review board will of course have a set of rules and regulations that , keeping in the spirit of the sandbox, can be changed at anytime, with no recourse.

Wow! I don't hang out here much since the last BS blowout thread I read and contributed to here about someone asking the whereabouts of Mikey914. More of the same...what a shame. sad.gif

Kent, I love your attitude and am in total agreement with your viewpoint on this subject. I miss hanging with you and the rest of the SoCal crew. I too contributed to the hat passing for Andy, (that allegedly never happend).

Elliot, you're always a riot and have a great attitude! Can you fly us around this shit storm? lol-2.gif

McMark, I can't tell if your comments are serious or not, but that's one of your best attributes. Oh, and your car building skills, contribution to our community. Ok enough ass kissing.

This kind of crap makes me want to sell my teener and be done here, if this is the best site for our cars. confused24.gif

We're supposed to be a group of car...nay...exceptional car (914) lovers. This kind of crap drives me insane! dry.gif

Another thing that drives me crazy is what some of the Admins have posted, now and in the past. I think they should be an example of what this site stands for. Maybe I'm too idealistic in that regard, but I think they should portray the comradery we all exhibit when we get together at our events. Not so with some of them. I'm not even sure how or why they hold these positions. Did we vote? Did they volunteer? BTW, I know why Andy has his job. aktion035.gif

Whatever the case I am speaking of one individual directly. Vacca Ribite, what is up your ass sometimes? You come off as a hard on. Or dare I say a dick! You don't seem to have a problem throwing that term around towards others here, on a different thread mind you, so I'm sure you won't be offended. If you can't be respectful of others on this site, give up your admin position and join the general population. You don't represent me.

In regards to the subject of this thread. I've have purchased "World" merchandise in the past from other members here that didn't receive anything other than our money and a pat on the back for their contributions. Why is this any different?

Rusty, you're member #6? I know I've got a number that's quite a bit larger than yours, but I've never heard of you...thanks for contributing. WTF.gif

OK, I hereby volunteer to be on that "independent design review board."

My qualifications:

1. I'm good at being completely arbitrary in my decisions.

2. I have no personal artistic skills.

3. If I personally want to buy the product that is submitted, it gets a thumbs up. If not, it gets a thumbs down.

4. I've watched "Shark Tank" at least four times.

5. I properly used the word "hereby" in a sentence, thus verifying competence for legal review.

Where was I Christmas day in 2002? Probably stationed in the middle of Kansas, sitting in some shitty apartment? Odds are I was enjoying some wine and smoking my hookah pipe.

I think I was recently back from one of my overseas tours in the Sinai.

Most of us were on Rennlist back then... that was a long time ago. Good times.

as for the member #. iirc the # you received when you joined 914club carried over to world. as for join date and posting #s rusty has been around. he had a 24/7 job for a career and is probably making up for lost time doing other things.

i think a few vets have had timeouts. i know of 1 that positively deserved it. everybody gets over it.

given the comments on the mug my guess is there's a market for quality 914 related items. there you go! do your own line sans 914world.

You're doing a really good job of that. You are 50 years old, why are you being a prissy drama queen about something you weren't asked to do in the first place. You were not commissioned. There was no design contest.

Doing a limited production group buy of a unique design involving a Forum logo and with permission from the Forum management is one thing. Opening a swag store with their logo is way out of line. This is the only car forum I've been a part of that doesn't do it's own swag to pay for operating costs. Even then, the only time a 3rd party vendor is involved is calendars.

My $.02, drop the logo and this stupid bitch-fest. Focus on your unique and nicely done 914 posters, and enjoy the car that brought you here.

I am with you Chris. i am ready to put this to bed but it seems we have a lot of patriots around here waving their banners. Call me a drama queen, a pisser, whatever. There's two sides to every story.

All this and Andy still hasn't definitively weighed in and said it's ok or not. So a little disappointed in that. Just old man Rusty waving his arms (and firearms).

I do have the PM where I said I would be offering stickers shirts and mugs. Again no "hey man you can't do that".

If admins want I will send them the design file (plenty of hours in it which I will donate for the cause) and they can take all the time and trouble to setup a store or a group buy and run it. Seems people here want the stuff but are pissed off I am offering it.

Yeah this could have been done by PMs...and it was. Point was made and store was closed. But nooooo....good old Rusty here had to throw it up the flagpole.

I admit to quitting on page 6. because I could feel my intellectual prowess being sucked out of me like a blind hooker asking for money from a kilbassa. Yes, I know that makes no sense, but neither does this thread anymore. I don't need any more t-shirts, coffee mugs, stickers or rubber chickens, so I am not sure why I read as much as I did.

My take-away is that Rusty (who I never even heard of until this thread) seems like a bit of an a-hole. And that the money that I contributed a while back went mostly back to the site but about a dollar of it went to Andy's drinking habit, which I am fine with because dealing with all of us has to be stressfful.

God save the 914world and its brethren, and its font, and its impeccable standing on Earth as never having allowed a sub-par piece of swag being produced in its name.

Honestly, I love this place. It keeps me sane. Just let me know when I need to send money to keep it up, and I will try my best not to even read threads like this in the future.

So true. I moved to CA in '96, got my first 914 (73 2.0) and if it wasn't for Rennlist, (I have only the faintest recollection of Porchelist...) I would never have got that puppy sorted. Totally fun times tho. By today's standards, the list created a tiny community, but it seemed frikk'n magical at the time. I could ask about the FI bits/behaviors and get answers from folks who had the btdt to assist. (I think I even got Rusty to comment on webers for a /6 when I got into trouble with them)

With teenagers currently in the house, the p-car hobbies are quite slow at the moment, but I do have non-running 914's so I suppose I'm still "in" -- lol.

My member number is the second one I had -- I was just being a tester for something new at the time. Once the site was running, things just moved on -- so early numbers just mean you were here early. (man, in my case, do I wish it meant "competence"!)

The community/group/whatever-we-are-called has turned into something quite unexpected and quite wonderful. "unintended consequences" :-)

Enjoy it.
