I did a little cutting today..

The easy way to clean out your center tunnel.. I cut the top off so when it gets soda blased, all the stuff in there will be all clean. I also took out the tubes for the heater controls that I won't need. I plan to weld down the clutch tube every few inches too. This will make running new brake lines super easy.
(yes, I am indeed insane...)
oops, forgot pic...

I dont think I would have cut that tunnel out of there. I believe it has and does aid in lateral structure support for your car. I do hope you are going to weld it or something in place of it. So I guess this means you are going to do the V8 conversion?
i think he means it will get blasted, he'll coat it and then reweld it back in...to make sure the rust is gone.
real good idea. Did you find anything interesting in there?
Thanks Royce ,I kept hearing people talking about the tunnel but was having a hard time picturing what it looked like and exactly where it was.Another mystery solved!!!

show and tell more of that saw...

I found a bunch of rodent crap and a tree shaped air freshener. The air freshener didn't smell like anything anymore, but the rodent crap sure did!
914 novice: Somewhere around here there's detailed pics of a tunnel dissection showing exacty where everything is in there. Keep hanging around here and you'll have to change your name to "914 expert"

I got one of those too, I got it when I started my conversion. It does cut very fast. Like butter actually. It blew me away when I saw how fast it went through the 914 sheetmetal. If they are that cheap, I may have to go get another one as a spare.
r u gonna try to run your water lines through there???
That would be the best place.

I always thought the tunnel would be the ideal place for water lines, but to do that you need more vertical space, which is even better. If you made the tunnel like 6 inches high you would gain a tremendous amount of rigidity. You could even make the top a bolt-on type of thing for easy access to the new space. As long as the metal is bent over at the top edge it should be strong enough.

Wow, serious stuff... I think Gint had to do that too.. (keyword:had)
If I got one that far apart, I'd be looking at all kinds of alternative systems for shifting, and maybe even engineer out those cables completely.
I am starting to feel interested in my car again..

Here it is.. $25 at harbor freight on sale (it's on sale right now in fact, until feb 14th). It took 3 blades to do all that cutting, and it's way faster than a sawzall (on 1 layer, it slows down significanltly on 2 layers of metal). Probably 20 mins of cutting time total. And 5 packs of blades are only a few dollars! |

Thinking about it.. I'm still designing my radiator/water pump setup, so ideal locations for things are yet to be determined. |

On another note, Bondo, when you are ready to buy your hoses, I have the perfect place to get them, better, stronger hoses that will last the life of your car and for less than you can buy the Gates green stripe from any of the dealers. |

Do tell, I would like to add that to my conversion folder. |
Well, I used Wet Exhaust hose on Mine and Joe Buckles. It cost about $80.00 for both length of hoses you need in 1" and 1.25" and they are both 12' long. If you have never seen it, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Extreme duty hose that will never break. The hose kit from Renegade is about 110.00 and its the same from Rod Simpson and they only give you the Gates hoses. I get it from Mesa Hose right around the corner from my house here. I could walk there in 5 minutes. The guy that owns it, builds and restores old classic cars and stuff too.
If I ran hoses through the tunnel, I would not do it with rubber. It would be steel and welded in as a permanent installation. I won't be running it under the car.. I already scrape on things and I don't want to reduce clearance any more (there was one driveway at a friend's house where I almost high centered my other 914)
I'll either do it in the tunnel or through the longs. A little extra heat won't bother me because I'll have AC. I probably will use marine exhaust hose on both ends though, I like the idea of having a spring to keep it from collapsing on the suction side.
