914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Plaid insert seat materials or kits available as a 4 pcs kit fully sewn

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 23 2014, 01:58 AM

I was asked some time ago to help out in getting these material made. I finally got off my butt and pulled the trigger on this. I have 7 for the 9 in stock and will have the other 2 late next week.

Materials will run per yard. Or I can have kits sewn up as shown. All 4 pcs $125, + the materials cost.

It is recommended you purchase 2 yards to get the sections to line up properly, does burn up material.

I will sell sample cards for $25 each that have 3" square samples. If you buy the $25 will be credited to your purchase.

I plan to have the GB open til Dec 10th, so if you are looking for a Christmas gift for your car this might be the thing.

I sent a kit out to Ken, he should have Friday.

Material is $127 per yard
If you have us do the 4 pcs kit it will take 2 yards for all 4.

In for # 47 BTW: when I purchased the material for my Pasha seats I ordered 3 meters or nearly 4 yards due to pattern repeat. So if you can get by with 2 yards that's good.

Mike, I understand the $ 25.00 sample but how much a yard and when do we send money?

Posted by: VoPo914 Oct 23 2014, 06:56 AM

I am in for a Ski-Blue #48 Kit. Once again a great product from Mark!

Thanks,
Blaine

The center kits at $125 for all 4 pcs+ material cost.

Hi Mark. #47 would look nice in my newly-painted Bahia Red '74...what's the total cost for sewn inserts? And do I understand correctly that this would include the black vinyl for the entire rest of the seats?

This, of course, would mean changing tactics on the brown carpet set I have on order with you...plus I'd have to replace the brown door cards and rear panel. Would you be able to sew up black door cards with the plaid inserts as well (not the whole door card, just some tasteful inserts with black vinyl).

GA, big fan of the plaid cloth interior on my '11 GTI...

Mark - Looks great. Couple questions.

Is this wool
What weight
How much per yard
Will you have side bolster kits available
What comes sewn in the kit and what is left to do
Do you have a source for replacement foam
whats the turn around time from purchase

Thanks!

Posted by: Sleepin Oct 23 2014, 09:11 AM

Thank you for doing this Mark! The tartans have been pretty much impossible to get for a reasonable price! The community owes you once again for making these available!

Of course, my new color won't go with the #45 originally on my car now. I may be in for a #48 kit though.

Yes the details -

-This is wool

-22-25 oz per yard there is some variation between colors, black seems to be heaviest

-$118 per yard

-Bolster kits are in the works as the set I sent Ken he wants them too. I anticipate this weekend we can get to taking apart and patterning with a test set to ken early next week. production pending fitting 14-20 days out tentatively. Will be pretty much ready when the 4 pc kit is.

- the kits consist of the bases that you will have to remove the vinyl from your old bases, and staple back on. The centers are provided with a section at the base for the wire, and the headrest section sewn in there was a really great article a while back I' ll find an put on the thread.

- The replacement foam we could make, but unless there is a significant demand, it's probably not something we will set up to do.

- Turn around time
- materials only - in stock - a day or two depending on when the order is placed
- Kits - anticipate 15-20 day turn around from when the order is placed

Thanks,
mark

Excellent Classic thread on how to do this also has another classic embedded in the entire seat, but his is the How to.
The question is material only or $125 we can do this for you

I'm in for a set. I'm also in for the bolsters. The seats I have are good cores but smell bad so I won't reuse anything but the shell and hardware. I'll go to my local upholster for the foam. I will use the old seat bottoms for a template to make new. Thanks for taking this on.

Maybe trim out the center pad/third seat in matching material idea.gif

I'm glad I collected some old core seats

I had though about making hats with the little pieces that are left over. Not really big enough for much, but on the 2 yards when the pattens are aligned, we cut the sides of the base cushions, if you had then in vinyl, there would be a strip large enough to accommodate the center deposit box biggrin.gif

Hi Mikey,
I will want one of the red/burgundy. My wife and I can sew, so I just need the fabric.

Thanks,
Warren

Also I probably want either a blue or a black. Not sure yet.

Ditto all three Questions smile.gif :agree

And one more. How close is your vinyl to the original?

Posted by: Valy Oct 23 2014, 03:04 PM

How about the brown vinyl?
Or can I send you the material I want and let you make the inserts?

Posted by: bigkensteele Oct 23 2014, 05:51 PM

Mark, I will try to do one of the seats this weekend and post a picture. Folks will just need to disregard the fact that my bolsters are trashed.

Can't thank you enough for pulling this off! I have wanted to re-do these for 15 years now.

I watched some pictures from cars that are supposed to have original plaid seats and I saw vinyl on the side of the cushions. That's how I made my seats and this is how it is presented in the tutorial http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=187750
One yard for the two seats is doable but you have to be very carefull when cutting. I would suggest to sell the plaid by 1.1 yard kit.

Posted by: dial9147320ltr Oct 24 2014, 05:39 AM

Mark - i'm intersted in a full set in #81 - do you have a larger picture that would show the pattern ? Also, from the post it appears your making the covers 'without' any foam sewn on the backing, is that correct ?
Let me know how to proceed with the order...

If you go the short way yes, but you can't get the patterns to align.
You have to go the long way, but it does leave enough to do the sides or dare I say a center deposit box.
We could also provide a deposit box with the top in the same material for $110 all new if you bough the kit and wanted black sides.

Mark,

How close is the vinyl your using in pattern and texture? Could I send you some vintage back pad vinyl to use for the head rest or is the vinyl you use a match?

Posted by: GregAmy Oct 25 2014, 06:49 AM

I'd like to do this, but I'm not clear on exactly what is being offered. Clarify for me that you are offering the option for complete seat re-upholstery, including seat bottom seat cushions, seat back inserts, and sides, with black vinyl outside and plaid inserts (and foam backing but not seat foam inserts)? And I need to take this new upholstery and re-cover my existing brown seats (which I'm fully capable of doing) without any additional sewing (which I'm not capable of doing)?

What's the cost of the whole shebang, already sewn?

Can anyone link to what this looked like on a stock car?

Thanks!

Greg

Look at the first post. With the pre-sewn option you get the seat bottom cover in tartan pre-sewn. You install it over your foam seat base. You get the backrest center in tartan with the headrest cover in vinyl attached. The side bolsters are up to you. If you have a set of nice seat and want to convert to tartan this is an affordable way to go

Or purchase the tartan outright and do it yourself.

Here's a link from the quote two post above.http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=187750

Thank you, Mark, appreciate the efforts (and patience).

On a bit of a non-sequitur, anyone offer some internal links on vinyl dyeing? If I got this route, I'll need to dye the current brown interior to a somewhat-matching black. Seat bolsters, door card, center cushion, and rear bakc pad are all in surprisingly good condition, just the incorrect color.

Why not just package them up and replace with all new material? It costs more, but you effectively have a 2nd interior that could be sold if you want. Brown is a harder color to come by so for a correct brown interior it may be worth just holding onto.

But there are commercial vinyl dyes SEM makes some that I'm aware of.

I signed up and paid for mine already- pre-sewn and side bolster vinyl option and cushion foam too.
Should be interesting. My original seats need this so bad!. I will pull out my 993 seats when I get this done!

Thanks Mark for getting this done!.

I've given it thought, but it does come out quite a bit more pricey. This one is in very good shape (no tears, no wear areas, etc). I think I'd be hard-pressed to find other parts that are in as good shape.

If someone local had a very-good condition black interior and was interested in a swap, I'd consider it. But I think the odds of that are damn near zero. But if you know of anyone interested, I'd consider it. - GA

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 28 2014, 10:31 AM

Dude,
I can sell you a brand new one, door panels (fiberglass), and back pad (fiberglass) we are also templating the back pad vinyl so if you have the foam for it you are good happy11.gif .

The budget way to go is to carefully remove the old vinyl and replace with new. Roll the old stuff up on a tube and store it. biggrin.gif

I will be able to sell the new back pad vinyl kit for $125 all 3 pcs.

Original black/grey tartan seats. The sides of the seat cushion are vinyl.

VHT makes black vinyl dye in a spray can. The most important thing when dying, is your prep work. You cannot have ANY residue on the vinyl. You should also use an adhesion promoter. They also make this product

The pattern actually runs the short side of the roll, you have to shift it at least 3" to have the pattern centered on the seats. You can pick it up on the next section above, but it leaves a strip on the side wide enough that we could do the sides.

It would be large enough to to a center cushion, and we could do up a pre sewn piece or heck even make a matching driving hat I'm checking with my guy, but it looks like $25 he could sew them up.

Another question, Mark: If someone were to get the bolsters as part of the plaid inserts, would you be able to use different colored thread for the stitching? What I have in mind is the burgundy insert, black vinyl, with burgundy stitching on the "cowboy stitching" (whatever that double-stitching is in between the upper and lower bolsters...might be nice to do this stitch all the way around...see my GTI interior pics earlier in the thread..."thread", I kill myself...)

Obviously this is not a concourse restoration project.

I was able to find a local foam supply store to cut these up. $28 each in a high density foam. Yes I can find cheaper foam, but for comparable firmness, it runs a little more. Pics in the morning.

I was wondering how best to replace the faded and ripped red plaid in the '76. This is way cool.
However, I thought I knew that there is a difference between seat cushions, early vs. late. Is this true? And which do these kits fit?

i have late seats and did not think to ask this, but it brings up another question as i was looking at another members newly done seats. will you supply the matching vinyl piece that covers the bottom front base that is under the bottom seat cushion? my seats were tan originally(i am changing to black) and nothing is salvagable so i am going to need everything- btw i will take the new foam that you have acquired and priced out. i've already paid for the rest of it but need to pay you then for the bottom pad foam now too.

The only variations I've seen don't necessarily affect the plaid.

The early seats have a fixed passenger back with a base that bolts down (not a bucket style seat).

There was variation on the vinyl designs, - brick mold vs basket weave.

To answer the question on the replacement of the plaid inserts, that's why I set this up. There is the option for you to sew, or have sewn the material only, or for us to provide you a "kit" that is pre sewn. The kit will require some skill level to install, on a scale of 1-10 probably a 5 to make it look perfect. If you are planning to do it I'd recommend reviewing the site on seat rebuilds done here. There are many people that don't have a lot of experience that have done very well, it basically is a matter of how comfortable you are with it.
Perhaps locating a spare set to disassemble. That would give you a good idea if you are ready. If not, any upholstery shop, should be able to install these.

Hope this helps
Mark

For those that are on the fence, I have received Mark's first kit, and they are absolutely beautiful. As in far nicer than I could have hoped for.

I may be wrong, but I believe his upholsterer v-notched the foam for the pleats, so they are very crisp and dead-nuts straight. He went to great lengths to insure that the pattern is centered and that the back would line up correctly with the bottom. He even took into account how the pattern would align with the pleats.

They vinyl grain seems to be very close to the original, but obvious 40 year old vinyl is going to show its age to some degree, so it is a little difficult to compare.

As some of you may know, I have been on a quest to restore my plaid interior for several years, and this kit is the bomb. Mark and I spent a lot of time on the phone the last couple of weeks discussing the kits, and I can tell you that he has spent a lot of time and money getting these right. Well, he nailed it. The quality is what we have come to expect from all of Mark's products. smilie_pokal.gif smilie_pokal.gif smilie_pokal.gif

Will post some pix when I get one recovered, hopefully this weekend!

Hi Mark;
looked on the web site and was hoping to get the swatch card you had mentioned but didn't see it. would like to get a sample of the actual colors, as the photos of the swatches and the cloth appears to be a little different. I imagine it is because of the difference in lighting on them.

Tease alert!

Some pics of the prototypes.

Sorry that I can't post completed pics yet. Mark and I have been working together to dial these in to perfection, and that takes time. As it turns out, the construction of the vinyl vs. plaid seats was a bit different, and we are working through that. I have a set of original plaid seats that had been recovered to a pretty high level of craftsmanship, but with the wrong material (as it was not available). I have sent Mark one of my cushions to be reverse engineered, and I am working with him on the fitment of all of the pieces. I can say with certainty that the quality of Mark's materials, and the skill of his constructor are top-notch.

I can report that the back/bolster that he has created is fantastic. I got the first one on last night, and it might need a little heat gun in a couple of spots, but the fit is excellent. Much thanks to Turk22 and his excellent thread on recovering seats:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=198686
(note the 8th photo in post 2 - the relief cuts are absolutely necessary)

The center insert is great too. The headrest vinyl slipped over like a glove and again probably won't need much more than a couple passes with a heat gun. I have a couple of other points of feedback that will make it fit better.

The first round of cushion covers were patterned from vinyl pieces, and they didn't quite work out. Mark is working on that now.

Bottom line, when this kit becomes available to the masses, it will be absolutely first-rate, and I have really enjoyed working with Mark to get this right. And trust me, he doesn't want to sell it if it isn't right.

More to come...

I think John Forbes (Black Forest Racing) needed a set as well. I hope to see him this afternoon, and will mention it to him.

I'll let Mark answer that one, because I'm not sure. I originally ordered black/grey, but through some honest mistakes got red plaid. Mark* said "let me ship it to you, I think you'll like it or I'll take it back for a full refund" and he was right: it looks great with this car color so I'm keeping it.

No photos yet; seats and covers are loaded in the back of the GTI for delivery to a local upholstery shop (I chickened out and decided to let a pro do it). But as soon as it comes back I'll post some photos.

* I've had nothing but positive interactions with this guy. I seriously can't say enough positives. I hope that someday - after we all have our cars all done, of course - the market for these cars goes vertical and he gets to sit back in the Bahamas, sipping Pina Coladas, enjoying all that profit from this clever venture.

Just a heads up on these, those of you that got the Group buy got an exceptional value. I just gut my bill fro my upholstery guy and what he charged was per seat, not per set. I actually paid a good chunk more than what I charged. As I don't put much margin on these it but me a little.

To those of you that stepped up and bought on the GB, thank you and merry Christmas. My gift to you for being the 1st to step up.

The production is slower than I'd like, but we are truing them out. Got another 2 sets ready and will have one more Friday. My guy will be out til Jan 7 and will be doing these 1st when he returns.

The Black / gray will be ready this next week and we will have it staged and ready to go as soon as he returns. It sucks that it took so long to get it done, but the pattern was taking off the loom as they thought they were done. The set up to do these is a pain, but it's why we did them all.

So you will notice the new price for the sets has bumped up a little.

It had been a long time since my wife and I worked as elves through the night to complete a project (which arrived just knick of time). I thought you said this was on its way already? Now it's another 2 weeks. Not your fault I know, but i may pull out at this point or pass along my spot to someone else and just have you refund me via paypal.

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 28 2014, 12:43 PM

Just give me the word. I will send you a refund today.
The black and gray was not correct so I rejected it. It created a situation where they need to replace it, and they found the gray they had was not correct, so they wound up having to dye more material to make it. With the holidays they have been off a bit, I'm hoping I can reach them Monday to get some news, but they have my money, and I am confident it will get done. 95% sure it will be in January, I just can't tell you when until I hear back.

If this will not work in your time schedule, I can appreciate that, and as I said will promptly refund your money.

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 28 2014, 03:35 PM

I will have the material if you want any, and I can do complete seat sets and backs if you need them. I'm just not paying members to take these anymore. I messed up on my original GB price and wound up paying more for the sewing than I charged.

As soon as the material is done I can sell you raw material or kit.
I'll post on this thread so everyone knows where we are on this.

I will get it right, and you will get the plaid you are looking for, but if it's not right, no one is happy. I thought we had this all dialed in, but the code for the grey was not correct to begin with. It took months to get the colors right, fortunately there is some carry over, the lime green, green, yellow, light red. This should be the easiest, but no.

The Great new is I have 4 sets ready, just need to do up some backs, so more are going out. I should be able to get 2 complete (with backs) tomorrow, the balance Tuesday.

Anxious to see the black. I may need to get on this quickly.

I got the German Loop carpet set and new door panels from Mark awhile back. With new seat coverings my interior should be about as done as possible. If any of you are thinking about getting new carpet (and nothing makes dingy old carpet look worse than a brand new set of seats) I'd highly recommend the German Loop that Mark offers. A little pricier than domestic loop and domestic pile, but it's really nice and the loop should wear well for years and years to come.

Followed up yesterday. The grey color is matched, but as this is actually being done on the east coast we have had some weather delays. I keep checking on a weekly basis, and I do believe we are in the home stretch.

I will be doing a write up on the ones I'm doing for my car in the next few weeks. I'm waiting for mine to be done too. Maybe Friday.

Read up in this thread. Mine's done and I posted photos, plus I think someone else did as well. Car is pickled in storage until the snow (and salt) goes away otherwise I'd be driving it today!

Reproducing a quality OEM spec part that has not been manufactured in decades requires:

Attention to detail
Product knowledge
Quality control
A Great deal of time and effort devoted to research and development
And most importantly Patience and Perseverance

Just food for thought. I know because I have spent countless hours researching information on VW and Porsche locks, keys, etc. and I still have much to learn and hope to continue doing so.

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 26 2015, 01:33 AM

My guy was out of the office, so I'm still following up. I'll let you know as I'll be trying again tomorrow.

#47 should be in the group that will be done Friday. I'll let you know Rick just as soon as I get it'll be out the door to ya.

I'm working on being able to produce these and others faster and in more volume.
Not much good now but I'll be improving and expanding offerings on these.

Besides the bottom cushion, are you all using the existing foam and structure for the head and sides? or did you have it all replaced?

looking at the foam out of the first seat i stripped, I do not think it wise to just wrap it up under these new skins.

The foam for the bottom is an option, as well as seat heaters. The black and grey plaid is still somewhere in the works. I have all the thread matched, I call weekly for the production schedule, but it seems more like I'll get it when they are ready. So for now, I call weekly, don't get much info, but it will get done, it's just a matter of time. Unfortunately, I don't have much direct control but I'm persistent in calling. I hope in a few weeks to have this in hand.

I would be very interested in a black grey set when you get them . Are you still making the covers? I have had the same issue trying to get the right plaid from SMS Auto Fabrics...the black grey actually came out black and tan.
The covers look amazing btw!

My seats had already been reupholstered, and the cardboard was glued to the main foam core. I think that you will need it so you have something to staple to.

They were helpful to use. We glued them back in and used them.

I reused the black runners. I stitched them to the new covers by hand then glued them to the foam just like they were originally. A little time consuming but worth it IMHO. I replaced all of the foam to the insert (plaid) section. Starting fresh, no more stinky seats!
**Tip... Keep one insert together to use as reference, it really helps when you go to reassemble with the new cover.

Yes, I only took one seat apart and took lots of pics. The other one won't come apart until I start assembly on the first one.

Mike, your illustration shows what looks to be two shades of yellow. I have a swatch from SMS Auto Fabrics of the yellow, and it doesn't go with my 1974 Chrome Yellow (L13M). THe swatch is too mustard for me. My question is, are those two separate shades of yellow in the picture? I'd love to have a lighter shade of yellow.

I noted that 43 is a lime green. It sounds like 40 is the only yellow? As I said, in the start of this thread you had a picture of all the material shades, and it looked like you had two shades of yellow. Sounds like that's not the case. That's what I want to confirm.

No only one true yellow. The real test is do you need a green stripe of blue. I have seen the lime look close to the yellow as it had faded.
The small cross strip will confirm your color.
