Since this is one event that I look forward to every year, and it keeps me from jumping off a bridge, I thought I would get some interest started early as Easter is on the 5th this year and will not be an issue for the swap. This coming year should be HUGE. Who is planning on going?

"This coming year should be HUGE." "Huge"? I'm under the impression all years are pretty much the same size. Am I wrong?

The Cap'n

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 6 2014, 10:30 AM

Yup. Years with Easter on that weekend tend to be smaller due to family taking people away from the important things. On years where Easter is not on the same weekend, it is up to twice the size or even larger. Also, the AX that takes place on Sun is more fun when Sun is not Easter. Although, last years Easter AX was well attended.

I know this is a long shot, and is going to be like herding fish, but I really enjoyed the drive we did a couple years ago. Any locals ( Ken, Sach etc ) know of other routes that might be nice to do, and would enough people be down for a day long tour to make this worth planning for ?? confused24.gif

I'm in for the Swap Meet, wouldn't miss it!
I too would enjoy a group drive and have one to suggest.
About 45 miles North East of Hershey is Cigars International Tobacco Store and Micro Brew Bar.

AND, with in sight of the above is Cabelas

day long tour sounds like a Sunday event. The swap typically (that is, typically) winds down in the 3pm time frame. Would a tour after the swap be long enough to be enjoyable? If not, Sunday afternoon 'cause I know it won't be Sunday morning happy11.gif

If enough people are interested in doing a drive, I would be interested in helping organize a Friday drive/rally. I would love to get it on the calendar before it goes to press.

Anyone interested in a Friday drive/rally? The issue with Friday is that set up at the swap met typically opens from 2 until 4 pm. So, that makes it hard to plan around.

Steve - I would suggest working with zach, he knows the area. I would be up for a friday tour. Not really interested in Sunday. Personally, I've never set up for Hershey the day before. With the wind and rain of some past events, I would not want stuff exposed the night. Even if you bring tents and tables there are always people willing to pitch in and help set up. There's plenty of time in the morning.

That sounds great. Zach, what do you think?

Great points about set-up n Friday. If we do it on Friday who would be interested in participating?

Last question - 914 only? I would love to invite everyone that is interested. But, . . .

Not Jerry can juice....this is a fine wine (sort of) made with Washington State grapes...all reds cab, merlot, syrah etc. The good new is that I make lots of it.

Sorry for not replying sooner. Been up in the mountains...

Any how, last time we did a rainy tour of Gettysburg and a lunch stop at my favorite German restaurant for lunch, and wings for Dinner.

There was interest in doing a covered bridges tour. There are several in the area.

Lancaster has Amish and old trains. Lots of fantastic scenery, but can easily get stuck behind a horse and buggy.

If folks have other ideas, love to hear them.

We are working on this event. We should have some more info soon. It will be the day before the swap meet, Friday, April 17, 2014. We added it to the 914 Calendar as the - Hershey Spring Fling. If you are planning to go to the Hershey Swap Meet post here, and we will PM you when the info is available.

I just spoke with them about their ad in the calendar. Let me see what I can find out about parking, as well as Swap Meet booth spaces for this coming year.

If everyone is happy with the Knights Inn, we can set up a block of rooms.

Rooms are only $51 a night. Not sure if it's worth the effort to get a block rate.

Posted by: stevegm Dec 15 2014, 05:20 PM

I spoke with Steve Baun who is organizing vendor space at the swap meet. He said that for parking you pay the day of the event. If you want to park together, then come in together.

For booth space you can register on the website in Mid-January. "Preregistration is suggested." He said that if we want booth space together, then we need to register under one person. Otherwise there is a "slim chance u will be together." I am not sure who organized the booth registration last year. If no one wants to do it, I don't mind organizing it.

I've been talking to Zach and Bob about the route. Working on the details.

What does everyone think about making this a fun, scavenger hunt-style road rally? Where each car is given instructions and has to complete some tasks on the route. Then at the end we give out some prizes to the winners. Maybe we could invite some other Porsches and do a couple individual prizes, as well as a group thing for the 914s, or the 911s, or whichever model scored better. Just an idea.

The other option is to caravan through the route. But, I think with traffic, etc. it is challenging to stay together. People always end up getting broken into different groups anyway. Thoughts?

Posted by: wndsnd Dec 22 2014, 10:20 PM

I organized the spaces last year. Zach in prior years. Issues are getting spaces together and how many cars they will allow you at the spaces. Which is only one for every two spaces. Everyone wants a car at their space but they do not allow that. So last year I allocated a car pass only if you paid for two spaces.

I ordered extra spaces in my name to get more passes and some stand up members picked up the cost with me for that.

Other than that, and PCA always seeming to short what we request, it is a piece of cake.

But now that I think of it, the biggest problem was that I don't stay at that hellhole because I get points for business travel throughout the year, so I was not there at the motel in the morning g to hand out the passes. People had to find me on site to get their pass as I was setting up.

Someone else can do it this year. Not sure I am going down.

Been on a few drives here and there. Gimmick rallies/scavenger hunts work better as a team challenge when there is a passenger to play the game. Most people don't have time to look for other things while busy driving and trying to read directions or a map in an unfamiliar area. If you want to caravan the route should be generally clockwise in direction. What works for a single car often doesn't when people are following. Making left turns at a light or anywhere in traffic is a sure way to separate a group. A couple of preplanned stops to regroup is a good idea and if they're at a scenic/photo op place that's even better. And although everyone should gas and go before leaving on the run a gas/bathroom stop on the way out and maybe on the way back is also good planning.

John

I'll pick it up this year.

Thanks Mark. I would like a space to park and sell some stuff. Just let me know what I need to do.

Count me in for a space. So if we organize this together, we can each get a space for $40 (after that initial $80 space is paid for)? Also, it seems like I remember that you had to buy two spaces for them to allow one car. is that right? Or, is it as simple as 1 $40 space will let me park my car at my vendor spot?

Thanks. At $40 per space, I'd take 2 spaces. I'd really like to get my car at my vendor spot, if possible. I know someone will have to pay that $80 for the first spot, before the $40 per spot kicks in. I can pitch in on that.

We have been working on organizing the drive on Friday. Zach and Bob are both going to help with the route. I am in the process of contacting a couple air-cooled shops that we might be able to include on the route. Maybe we'll have a couple 914 contests (name that part/bolt). I think we are looking at an afternoon drive (to give people the morning to arrive), that ends at Underdogs in Harrisburg (the same restaurant that has been the ending point in year's past). Stay tuned for details.

Posted by: Steve Pratel Jan 2 2015, 11:15 AM

I'll be there, if the stars align, will drive my 912E, but that is unlikely.... If I do it will be without the interior done. Either way I will be there.

Yeah, that's my route too. I think I may this year as it will likely be my last due to a PCS move this summer. Lets touch base late March.

Mark, be warned that you are likely only to get a few parking passes, no matter how many spaces we buy if we buy them in one block. You have to buy the spaces in several groups to get the parking passes.

It's a volunteer run event, and I give them props for putting it together, but the dude that has usually run vendor registration really soured me to joining PCA. If you buy in one block, you are going to be going out of pocket to make sure everyone gets a parking pass who bought spaces.

Mark, we dealt with a couple people at CPA-PCA for their swap meet ad in the 914 calendar. I will PM you their info. I know they value the 914s. Maybe it will help.

I responded in the other thread that I will need 4 vendor spaces. The only thing I will have there is my trailer, so I don't need any parking passes.

Slightly OT but good to know. The AACA Museum Exhibit this year during the Porsche Swap Meet is featuring Lotus Street and Race Cars from 1954 to 2014. If you have time during the Swap Meet Weekend it might be worth seeing.

2 years ago we met at the hershey car museum and then did the drive. 1-ish sounds right.

Thanks. Very helpful. I am waiting to hear back from Bob and Zach on a 1 pm start working. But, I think going from 1 pm until dinner will fit well. We have a couple stops in mind on the route. But, none are as long as the visit to the museum. We are trying to spread out the stops a little. So, a 5 hour-ish drive (including route and stops) is the type of thing we have in mind. But, we are certainly open to everyone's ideas.

Anyone else want to meet at the museum like last time for the Lotus display ? I never got to see the whole museum last time, since we were in a bit of a time crunch. If our drive doesn't start until 1p.m. that gives us more time smile.gif .

Ya, I will probably go to the museum Friday morning. And I think we are setting it up to start there for the drive. I am still waiting to hear back from Bob and Zach whether starting at 1 pm will give us enough time to do the drive and make it for dinner. I think Zach said it started at 11 am last time and everyone barely made it to dinner. I hope to have those details worked out this week.

I'd like to see the Lotus exhibit also.
IIRC we got a group rate last time. But to get it we had to pay as a single lump payment.
The folks at the museum were really good to us and offered to let us line up for a group picture, but I don't think the time worked out for it.

Making room reservation in the morning. Brad Mayeur will be with me. If anyone has a open seats for the museum & fun run we would be looking for two since I will have the big truck & trailer. I guess I could unhook the trailer and just take the truck, but would rather ride along in something other than a F250. I would buy you a beer3.gif or three beer.gif

Garold,
I'm solo and can hook up with you Friday at the Museum if one of you want to ride along I be glad to offer it to you.

I live 45 minutes from Hershey so will be heading home after the run Friday, then come back Saturday for the Swap Meet.

One week to go. I'm changing the oil and replacing sail panels this weekend. And picking up a bottle of good tequila.
So, is everybody ready? What else do you need to get done?

Me too.

Monday I went to change the Oil and after taking the Tuna Can Bolt off I layed there on the garage floor watching the oil flowing out the tuna can Bolt hole. Then the Tuna Can and all of the oil released. The Tuna Can dropped into the drain bucket which over turned and oil went everywhere. sad.gif

So then I tried put the Tuna Can back in place and proceeded to strip the threads in the Tuna Can Bolt. mad.gif

Now what? OK, so after sleeping on it I figured I'd have to buy a new Tuna Can from the Bird which says ships in 5 days.......from Germany I think!
Hershey will be a memory by time I get it. sad.gif

Better Idea! Run it up to Tony Miller at Translog, worst case see if he has a stock Taco Plate laying around. Tony stopped what he was working on and fixed the Bolt with a Heli Coil and said snug it, not too tight, torqued about 9 ft pounds no more!

Done and ready to roll. piratenanner.gif

Thanks to Tony, see you at Hershey.

Everything is looking good. Bob and I are going to talk tonight about the route. The shirts have been sent to the printer and will be picked up next Wednesday (I ordered about 20 extras if anyone wants one that hasn't already ordered). I will not be bringing the silver 914 (too busy lately to get it done). So, I will need to ride with someone on the fun run, if possible.

Do you mean Friday? Ya, I figure somebody will have room for me. With shirts, magazines, posters, etc. it just won't all fit in the 914. Plus I'm behind on finishing it. Go figure.

So how many folks do we have looking to ride Friday afternoon? I could potentially bring the teener and the Carrera, well, ok, I can't do that, but since my oldest son is heading back from school to make Hershey, he could bring the 914 and I could bring the 911. Just a thought...

Also, we are heading up from Southern Maryland Friday morning via Annapolis and Baltimore. Anyone else passing through those areas Friday AM? Potential caravan?

BTW, I know it's in the Hershey threads and likely right under my nose, but where and when is the rally point for the drive?

Not staying at the Inn but shouldn't be a problem to drop by for the drive and dinner.

I have some work to do on both cars - long, cold, snowy winter, running a bit behind schedule. But I should have them both there if needed to help get a two others out on the drive. Just let me know - drop me a PM

If you had a good time otherwise I wouldn't let it discourage you.

The key is to walk it several (or many if you need) times so you see what your doing before you run.
There are usually only a certain amount of key cones that matter for best turn in and placement.
The rest are for distraction and hitting for points. first.gif

Great time as usual, Folks!

Special thanks to Paul Behofist at European Import Maintenance Center (EIMC) in Penn Brook. He put my car on his lift and did my valve adjust for me so my car would not be so noisy. Lesson learned, never try to adjust valves in a hurry. Ah well. I also picked up a lot of transmission inventory I left there in 2010 when I left the area for my residency. Nice guy to store all of my shit, er, expensive and rare Porsche transmission parts.

However, the drive back started late (5pm) and was about the shittiest driving experience I have ever had. Rating of F- to PA and WV roads. "Construction" should not indicated that I need a lifted off road vehicle. The pot holes were so bad that at 45mph I was about to lose some teeth. I though the 914 was about to split. It did not help that I was loaded down in cabin and both trunks with tranz parts and cores. It was so bad that my right headlight mount broke. Yes, the mount snapped off so that I was then left with one light. I did not notice this until I turned the lights off and then tried to turn them back on to only find out that the headlight was cocked, stuck, and fucking up my pain around all of those parts. Then, the core I had in the front trunk, a practice I have done numerous times, with protection around it to protect the car, put two dents in my hood from the inside. That is some serious pot hole induced bull shit right there. But wait, there is more....torrential down pours pretty much the whole way with visibility at about shit or worse. Pot holes + rain + poor vis + one headlight + slow going and I get in at 2am. I hope my suspension is OK, but there is no indication that there was an issues (remarkably).

An aside, I thought I was to be at work today at 8am like usual. I got about 4hrs of sleep due to my wife developing allergies and denying that she snores...I kicked her out of bed at 330am. Then, I some how end up at work, I dont remember how I got there, and they ask if I am open to seeing patients today. I am puzzled and ask if I have any openings to which they reply that I have a completely open schedule due to being off today and tomorrow as well. Holy shit, I need to get a grip on things. I may be pushing myself a bit too hard as of late.

Other than that, good to see my 914 family all together again. This is the one thing I can count on looking forward too every year.

well, it made it home...good news.
Now you get to nut-bolt the car....go tighten everything....something is now loose that is important...

I did NYC on time....came from LI to southern NJ right through the city....
I had to get out more than once to tighten up different things along the way....

Also wanted to give a HUGE thanks to Steve and Bob for all the hard work putting the event together this year. Those of us that have done it know that it can be a lot of time and effort. They did a great job. Even got about perfect weather for the entire weekend. How they managed that, I have no idea.

THANK YOU!
Zach

agree.gif Had a great time and it was great meeting many of you for the first time. One change for next year...I am not drinking any of that crap in the gas can.

Well, the little car made it to Hershey from the NH area, and my wife and I had a great time. We met a lot of new people, and some old friends. Made enough Moolah at the swap to pay for the trip, but not enough to get my 2.7 case back from machining, but that would have been a stretch anyway.

We ate chocolate, saw singing cows, and beat things up at the autocross.

The car ran like a champ and made it home without incident. (Thank you Chris and Ed), I was kidding with my wife that I must have had too much chocolate becuase my teeth ached but 7-8 hour runs over bad roads and pot holes had our teeth chattering.

Next year, will bring mouth guards, and ear plugs........

Thank You Steve for the group organization and whoever fixed the weather..

Good job Zippy at the autocross, you were flying. Did you beat that little open wheeled thingy, you must have been close.

Great seeing all of my recent new aquaintances and some new new ones.

I actually liked the gas can. Haven't had one cough since Friday night.

Hope everyone is glad that I left my energetic partner at home this year so everyone could sleep. sheeplove.gif

Thanks Steve and Bob. So what is next????

Finally after a few years of work conflicts I made the Friday events - my first time. Had a great time, and enjoyed having my son come up with me with both cars, also had a good time giving Garold and Dan seats for the drive.

As for us, traffic was a bear to York, but the next 2.5 hrs threading our way south went smoothly. Also had another teener running with us to around York (light metallic green/blue that was in the concourse lot).

Me thinks we'll stay at the "Inn" next year and enjoy more of the festivities, but a free hotel compliments of work travel had its appeal...

Kudos to everyone who pitched in small and large to make this a great event!

Dr. Evil so sorry to hear you had to endure all that crap. At least you didn't
end up on the back of a hook.
Finn a pleasure to meet you and your Dad. Come back next year!
Hope to do a tour with you guys next year as well as 914Dave(his car should be done!)
Good time as always.

Thx John,

No I didn't beat the Lola T340.
Having this open wheeled race car in the same division as all the other "non Porsche" cars is almost as ridiculous as judging brand new Boxters against pristine 40 year old 914's in the Concourse judging at the Hershey Swap Meet. stirthepot.gif

It was a great time for Leesa and I this weekend thanks to Bob and Steve for putting together the drive and dinner events.
914Dave REALLY helped me out with space and support to sell a couple of large items for me. Thank you!
