Search is not my friend. Has there been a long drawn out thread about SPI epoxy primer? If so please point me to it. I don't want to stir the pot, just looking for information. I have found a lot about using it on their forum, but it is a little cult like over there. Just hoping to get a range of opinions.

I've used their epoxy stuff with overall good success. It's real easy to sand and builds nicely. I still have some left over if you ever want to try it out.

Thanks Doug,
I will definitely try it out when the weather warms up. I am pretty convinced it is the way to go after everything is buttoned up.

How much did you use on Chris's car?

From personal experience. I do not like " off brand epoxies " I have had issues with them in the past. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple more bucks for a name brand setup. PPG's SHOPLINE is about 90.00 / gallon and I use it all the time. Put it on bare metal, give it 30 minutes to start setting up and you can put spray poly right on it and start sanding the next day. I've used cheapo ones customers supplied and had issues with it setting up. Some have had to sit for as much as a week before they would setup to be able to be worked on top of. It's all about the chemicals in the paint, and cheap pain uses cheap chemicals and they don't work as well.

You also need to know if the epoxy you are using is an etching epoxy or not. If it has etching properties DO NOT put it over OSHO or any kind of etch primer. Non etching ones ( like the SHOPLINE ) I put over OSHO'd floor pans and it makes a damn near bulletproof finish

IMHO, don't waste your money on Eastwood or POR-15 either. You can get better product for as much or less

Wanna go for the gusto, I've used PPG's DP epoxies. they're the cats ass, but you'll pay for it. shades.gif

Thanks Scotty,
Do you wash the Ospho, or just let it dry before you put the non-etch primer over it?

PPG DP epoxies are the way to go.

I let it sit for a couple days then scuff it over really well to remove any of the loose powder that forms as it does it's magic. I even run some 80 grit over it as insurance. It helps to make things nice and flat, and still leaves the protection. I still want to do a little write up on it's use. I've been doing a lot of experimenting with it in the last year, and have become a real believer in it's use

OK. So would you put ospho on all metal or just old. I have been using it all along in my restoration and shutter to think of having to wash it off with water. I will just keep spraying and welding.

Posted by: scotty b Nov 9 2014, 09:08 PM

I normally just put it over old to make certain any rust that may be in the pits is neutralized, but it can certainly be put on new as well for added protection. On large jobs that are going to be in bare metal for a long period it is the best way to keep it protected

I see that Shopline lists body filler as a compatible surface, but is that under, on top of or both?

either

So is it safe to just use all the products in the shop-line groups. I like this idea because I can source it locally, or do I need to mix and match brands to come out the best for time and money?
These are the products that look the best for me???
So for Shop-lne: jp37x
Body filler
jp202
jp335
jbp
jc620

Would that make sense? Should I drop the 335 and use 37x instead?

Thanks guys!

I used PPG's DP products, great stuff.

As for the question on specific groups, I'd say yes. As a matter of fact, most lines are made so that they work well (or at least don't have compatibility issues) with each other.

This seems like a pretty spiffy gun/kit. I will not paint a lot of cars, but I might paint more than one, so I was thinking something a little better than HF. Although I have a little HF touch up gun and really like it.

What are you guys thoughts? Has anyone tried 3m's accuspray?

Posted by: scotty b Nov 29 2014, 09:19 PM

That Devillbiss is a good all around setup. Much better then anything you'll get at HF, Lowes etc.

JP371, bondo, spray poly if so desired, or just move onto the JP202, base, clear. There's no need for 335

JP202 can be mixed either as a build primer for filling scratches, or thinned and shot as a sealer so there is no need in a " sealer " only product. PPG K-36 is the same way.

Thanks Guys!

Sounds like I have a plan.

After looking more closely at what my compressor can produce, I think I need this gun for its low air consumption.

Scotty...Others any thoughts. It seems like a nice gun, and has good reviews.

Last time I tried to buy shop line the distributor wouldn't sell it. You have to be a certified shop or something.
They would however sell me Deltron.

Posted by: cary Apr 22 2015, 08:29 PM

Same with my PPG shop. Deltron and Omni only.
So I have a couple qts. of SPI sitting on my bench ready to go when I get back to my 914.

Posted by: trojanhorsepower Apr 23 2015, 07:33 PM

I checked at napa when I started this thread and they said they would sell to me, but they may have thought I have a shop. I will check again soon.

Any thoughts on the gun?
