914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 1970 engine lid question

Posted by: Peashooter Nov 18 2014, 09:01 AM

I am at the point on restoration, where I want to install the "hood" on my car before the engine goes in, but have a question. I have 2 later lids that I was going to use for a GT lid, and noticed they have rubber buffers on the hinge, to keep it from banging I suppose. My early lid does not have holes in the hinge for these bumpers. Anyone know if the early lids are supposed to have a bumper?
Thanks, Bill

If I recall correctly, the rubber stop is installed under one of the fasteners for the rain tray to lid. Does a -6 have a rain tray?

edit: PET 803-05 shows the rubber stop for a -6. Also shows the drip pan not for 914-6

I have an August 1970 1.7. It has the bumpers.

AA lists them for $29.95 each, or you can go to Stoddard and get 356 pedal buffers for $6.05 p/n 901-423-528-00 which worked.

Right, there is no drip pan. The bumper I am talking about is on the hinge itself, not the L shaped rubber piece that screws to the lid.

no rubber bumpers, -6 lids have lighter torsion springs

Thanks for that...I am always surprised by the subtle differences between the six cars and the fours.

Are you asking about the rubber limiters on the lid hinges?

I was asking about these NLA parts in this thread a while back.

I ended up making some out of late model stoppers and trimming them down to fit.

As I noted above, this same part goes on a 356, and Stoddards sells them for 6.05 USD. Blind luck that I found them.

The lid on my six doesn't have the holes for the bumpers like the 4 cyl. cars, hence the question. The fact that the sixes have no rain tray would allow for the lighter bars I suppose. Amazing that the factory would change that many parts for so small a difference.

My six is very possible not to have its orig lid, it was modified into a GT lid at some point probably from a four donor.

Very cool, I will order up a few sets tomorrow !

Thanks for the link ! aktion035.gif
