914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 73 Air filter assembly on earlier cars?

Posted by: 914bub Nov 19 2014, 12:06 AM

I read somewhere here that I could use a 73 air filter assembly on my 72 1.7 liter. If I understand correctly the 73 air filter uses a paper filter instead of being an oil bath assembly? I just responded to an ad in the classifieds for an air filter assembly from a 73 2.0 liter. Would that assembly work on my 72 1.7 liter and is it a paper filter type? Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Bub

Works just fine, but but its a chore every time you need to find the proper replacement element for the 73 filter.

I don't see how you would adapt a 2.0 air cleaner to a 1.7. Completely different layout and mounting. Just get a later 1.7 air cleaner that uses the paper element.

The 2L air filter will work on a 1.7. However, you must use the bracket that mounts to the intake runners, 2L plenum, and the 2L throttle body. Then you must modify the runners to fit the 2L plenum, and lengthen the wires to the tps, and ts1.

Or, get the late 1.7 filter assy.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll pass on the 2.0 and keep my eyes peeled for a 1.7 assembly.

I have a complete 1.7L air assembly that uses the paper filter if you want it.
