Posted by: VegasRacer Nov 25 2014, 10:53 PM

This year will be the 11th Annual Route 66 Classic. Last year we were in our furthest east location, Albuquerque.
This year we set a new western record and bring the party to Palm Springs. Come join us for the fun and fellowship.

The host hotel is the Travelodge Palm Springs. 1277 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264. (760) 325-5574.
Please, book your room as soon as you can.
The manager said we would be able to find better deals on-line than what he could offer in our circumstances. ($80 + fees was the best I found) Pets are allowed.
Put "Porsche Club" in the special request field and post here after you make your reservation. The hotel will give us rooms near the back corner of the parking lot.

Friday - Arrive in Palm Springs. Parking lot pizza party.

Saturday - 9:14 am - Driving tour in the San Jacinto Mts. Hwy 74
1:00 pm - Lunch at La Tablita . Mid century modern architecture tour. Ariel Tram ride. Car Show. Shopping. Museums. Galleries. Etc.
7:30pm - Awards Dinner at Lulu's. Parking Lot Activities to follow.

Sunday - Go Home.

I would call the hotel and ask. There might be an RV park/storage place that will let you park it there for a few days.

just cancelled my online reservation and called to make a reservation over the phone. adult male on the phone told me he is the new owner and that they close on the property in 2 weeks. Told me that he may not be honoring previous reservations and wouldn't make one with me...

wtf!

claimed he had told expedia 2 weeks ago that he would be remodeling and may not be open in march. Uncertain until he closes on the property.
not super friendly about any of it

I'll give John a heads up

Wow ... just wow WTF.gif

Wonder if it's a situation like a car dealership my sis-in-law used to work for ... two brothers actually owned it, but they transferred full ownership of the business back and forth between them every year, so the employees never gained enough seniority to earn vacation time, etc.

On that note John; do you need any help from us locals on which roads or routes for this event? We drive a lot of these on a fairly regular basis and know the good ones. Aw Hell, they're all good in that area. Any road you pick will be fun.

idea.gif I was thinking this would be a nice 100 mile loop . . . . .
Hwy 111 out of town towards Palm Desert. MDB2.gif
Take the Pines to Palms Hwy. 74. aktion035.gif
Stop at Lake Hemet for a photo opp. coolpics.gif
Turn on to 243, the Banning Idyllwild Panoramic Hwy. piratenanner.gif
a short pull on Interstate 10 from Banning. smilie_flagge24.gif
and back to Palm Springs on Hwy 111, Palm Canyon Drive. aaron.gif
Tramway Road will take us to our lunch stop. chowtime.gif

Close but no Cigar. I've got to head out this AM but I'll PM you with some alt routes later today or manana. beerchug.gif I can't wait. beerchug.gif Kent

EDIT: I defer, John. That's a beautiful route sans the 10 and parts of 111. There are more challenging roads in the area but that ain't for everyone. Keep your eyes open on the 10. When Ron & I were returning from R66 a couple years ago, a big woman in a big SUV w/ big hair damned near took Ron out when changing from lane 4 to Lane 1 while on the phone. She never saw him.

After the tram ride and lunch, the plan has options:
A.) Air Museum http://palmspringsairmuseum.org/
B.) Art Museum http://www.psmuseum.org/
C.) Other - shopping, bars, spa, car repair, whatever.

There is no set itinerary until Lulu's. (cocktails at 7. Dinner at 8.)
Everyone is free to join one of the Museum Tours or Explore on your own.

Anyone and everyone is welcome for any part or all of the weekend.

Heck, you can start the party as soon as you want and carry on long after everyone else has left.
(Last year I arrived at the Red Rock Classic several days late. But it was still a party all the way.)

Elliot likes to show up a week early.

Flat roof = prone to leak.

If you are thinking about that design think about a standing seam sheet metal roof and hard R20 insulation.

I just got back from 10 days in Palm Springs. I have a few pics from the hotel we will be staying at for Rt 66. I had just stopped and got out of the car to take a few pics and some woman came out of the office yelling at me, "how can I help you"? (In what appeared to me to be a middle European accent). I said I just wanted to take a few pictures. She said, "how can I help you"? I told her I would only be a moment. She said, "this is private property you can't take pictures here". I tried to explain that myself and a large group would be staying there next month but that didn't seem to mean much to her. biggrin.gif I wished her a good day and left. Anyway, here are a few pics I managed to snap before she sent for the hounds. av-943.gif I think I better re-confirm my res. laugh.gif

There has been an improvement to the Saturday afternoon plan. piratenanner.gif
We now have an *official* lunch location after the scenic mountain drive.
Alan's favorite Mexican restaurant La Tablita will be our host.
We have been promised great food and good parking.

Following lunch Alan has offered a personal tour of his mid century modern home. icon22_2.gif
After that, there will still be time for museum tours, tram rides, shopping, spa treatment, drinking, or whatever you like.

Cocktails and dinner is still scheduled for Lulu's starting at 7:30

Damn I'm looking at a good 2300-2400 miles round trip! I wonder road wise for me if I'll be better off heading down I5 through CA & cutting straight over to Vegas. Or cutting through Reno to Vegas. The Reno is shorter & definitely more twisty roads. More mountain ranges to deal with though. So not sure if I'll hit a bunch of snow. Besides the snow all the shit on the roads they put down. So I think a boring drive down I5 is in the cards. Damn I need to get my a/c & heat working for this trip.

Yes, I5 is fairly boring. But the mountain pass after Ashland and the Shasta curves above Redding are a fun 60-80 miles! You can take the curves at 80+ (90?) while the regular cars slow down to 65-70, and the trucks are 55-60. It is a brief hour of fun before the Redding to Sacramento straight will put you to sleep for a couple of hours. Then maybe hit Reno rather than staying on I5.

The only thing you missed was the chance to order a shirt.

Love Palm Springs! Let's see if we can get the car out of the snow bank THIS year. dry.gif

You serious Rick? I got as far as St Louis last time. Thought it was the starter but I think in the end it was the voltage regulator. Sent me limping home in the daylight without any electrics going.

BTW. It may not have occurred to the organizers but Albuquerque is at the far WESTERN end of Rt 66. To say nothing of coastal California, which for me includes Palm Springs. poke.gif

I know - it is your party. Nonetheless, the title implies a more country-wide venue. I don't trust the car that far quite yet. Last year I did, but I'm not so sure anymore. When I completely understand how it works I will come that far. Have a blast! beerchug.gif

I have had to bail once. Tracked down some local SCCA car guys and left the car with them in Lincoln NE. Rented a car to finish the drive to the event and flew home from Denver. The next weekend I went out an rescued the car with a trailer. stuff happens. You have to be ready to roll with the punches.

The first trip we took with Sandy's car was to Moab last fall. We lost the starter on the way home. I push started the car the last day and didn't turn it off until we hit the garage.

Think about it this way. Will the car run until the next oil change? That is all your really asking of the car. Get in and drive it like you stole it. driving-girl.gif

'tis true, sadly no one came from East of the ABQ to last year's event here. Regardless, maybe Eric's little buzz through town will inspire a little more local help/participation and we (being the NM folks in general and maybe the Texans ... Sorry to hear, but a boy's ride can be just as fun. My wife accompanies me on the runs from time to time, but not often.

I stopped in at Pelican this afternoon as well ... I picked up the brake reservoir hose (for the hydraulic conversion Kent is going to do on the 'BB') smile.gif

I mounted and balanced the set of new Kumho's onto a set of crappy looking ATS Classics last night. Gonna try to clean them up before the run FERG.gif - but having fresh rubber was a must.

I gave it my all last year, but didn't get very far. Mostly I am pissing and moaning. Not only am I not sure about the car, but the broken vertebra from snow shoveling hasn't completely healed, so there is some question about the driver as well. As if there ever wasn't. laugh.gif

So think I'll borrow my daughters Bose blue tooth speaker. Damn thing puts out amazing sound for such a small unit. Plan to drive it to work tomorrow. I'll leave Sunday afternoon. Drive to Rand's place somewhere around Reno. Crash there & drive to Vegas Monday

I'll be scrapping tonight & tomorrow. Last night was bleeding my brakes. No wonder my pedal was soft. Pumping my pedal brought Fluid out the drivers rear caliper. Guess those seals were blown. No problem as I had a spare PMB to replace it with. Go to put that on & my rotor is either warped or had something behind it. At that point was pissed off so I left it for tonight & tomorrow. Hope it was just some debrees that worked it's way behind. Otherwise a quick turn hopefully will fix. IF not I may have to get creative blink.gif

OK, I just made a reservation at the hotel for Sat. night. I may need to cancel, but figured it's best to at least book the room for now.

Anyone else heading up from San Diego area? Up the 15 and then across the 60 East is the fastest way, but there are MUCH more scenic ways if any one is interested.

76-914 and Lawrence, what routes are you planning to go?

Hmmmm... maybe I still have a half package of hot dogs left over from Eric's cross-country trip send-off party that I could bring. Maybe some leftover potato salad too... it's only a few weeks old.

Thanks for the offer. I expect you will get a few takers, but not many. Most people have their own agenda on Sunday. Any *official' activity plans have historically been a bust.
With so many So Cal peeps this time you may get a good turnout, since they have a relatively short drive home.

Keep your fingers crossed. One way or the other I will have it back on the road today. Sure be easier if my rotor isn't screwed up though

Well my luck is total shit! Just east of Oakridge in a downpour. I came around a corner to hit standing water on the highway. Hydroplane sent me spinning. Ended up going into the other lane backwords & hit the guard rail at the passenger back corner. Wheel hit the guard rail & bent the trailing arm. Have 2 creases from the rail on the front flare. The rear is worse. All my gaps look good. Even in the rear trunk no creases. If the wheel hadn't caught like it did I think it wouldn't have even required a tow. headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif

So to sum it up I won't be coming to Route 66. I'm pissed as I haven't had my car back long & already I've fucked it up. Last thing I want to do is relive it all weekend. So I wish you all the best. I think I may just disappear for a while sad.gif

I appreciate the offer but no. Actually after looking at flights to get me to vegas now for work. I am still driving down there. Not sure if I'll be up for Route 66 now though. Getting a little hosed with my tow bill. Although it should end up being covered eventually. I'm just getting it towed to a shop I trust. A little ever 100 miles away. So at this point I am not canceling my hotel reservation. I may still show up with my son as he is still flying to meet me in Vegas. Odds are I will end up showing for at least a day. I'm rethinking my whole trip at this point. Hell I've still got probably 2 hours before my wonderful wife get's here with my car. So it may change a few more times before she get's here. It's not my car it is me I think! Curse has got to die sometime though right rolleyes.gif . So my family is bringing me my little hybrid. My wife left with my son for company driving her car. She is about 30 minutes out. I get excited as this Figaro's I am at is getting very old. Then she tells me my daughter is following in my car & just left the house headbang.gif . So I'll get to sit here for another 80min waiting for my car to arrive. Just keeps getting better & better dry.gif

Anyone wants to join us at the Roadhouse on Friday night, my friend Mark Gregg and his band start at 9p.

Saturday, Lulu alternative would be Schmidy's Tavern, but its out in Palm Desert. Its a live music, rock venue.

Sunday, if enough people are interested, I can have a pool party at the Desert Road patio in la Quinta. or if not, I am driving to Willow Springs to watch the VSRA racing.

I am debating hitting the Salton Sea on the way in. I have always been fascinated by its history, rise and fall and I think it could be a gold mine for pic ops. Oddly enough, my family doesn't share my enthusiasm so I might take this opportunity while I am solo(they are coming later)
See you all in Palm Springs!

The history is quite fascinating, but you will be vastly underwhelmed with the scenery.

Not worth the trip, IMHO.

Brant, if you don't get one at RRC, I believe I have one in the shed that worked. I'd send it for free since I'm uncertain of its condition - probably can't send it to RRC in time though, since I won't be there. The right rear is leaking now. I have brand new PMB brakes but they didn't come with adjusters to vent the inner piston. I got them all installed. They don't adjust. Nothing in the box to alert me to this situation. They don't work and I tried to call them.

What is a pisser is that I had wonderful brakes and I went and screwed them up. I should have waited until I got back to do this.

Any chance to throw the old rears back on, bleed them out and get going?

Posted by: Larmo63 Mar 26 2015, 11:08 PM

We did that, one is leaking now. Bad pedal.

Sucks- at least you weren't on the road when they went out. And no adjustment available on the rears? How is that possible? confused24.gif
I was just over at Erics' earlier today pressing in new rear trailing arm bushings- Would have been able to relay messages to help if I'd known earlier...

Pull the adjusters out of the old calipers and install them in the new calipers.

If your M/C is shot, good to know it now instead of on the road. I know you really want to take your 914, but you don't need a 914 to enjoy the run … I've done it in Toyotas more than in 914s.

Ditto that is how Eric sends them out without the adjustor. That is unless you sent him yours to be rebuilt. If you buy a set from him they do not come with the adjustor. Where is it leaking from on the caliper? Bleeder or one of the seals inside?

Between your new set & your old set. Is the leak coming from the same side? Any chance it is your brake line itself. Seems pretty random to have your brakes be fine in the morning. Then upgraded with your new rear calipers. Only to have not only the new set but your old set that was fine leak. Something doesn't sound right there. Not sure when we are coming in or how far away you are from Palm springs. If your close I'd be happy to come by & lend a hand. Not sure I want to touch anyone's 914 though. My luck this trip is for shit dry.gif .

We are going to give it another shot this morning. It would have been nice if I would have known about the rear calipers not being complete. I just assumed for the money I paid, they would have a minute part on them that actually makes them work. I have three sets of rears now, I guess I can cobble something together. Super frustrating. Wish me luck.

A stroke of luck last night. I was fortunate enough to meet a group of 914 owners who had come to Palm Springs for a cruise event. Within minutes of arriving a couple of F.I. gurus produced a vacuum gauge and determined the source of my problem was a failing diaphragm in the MPS. Not the best news but fixable. I'm pretty sure the diagnosis was correct since the car ran considerably worse after the vacuum stress test. So I'll be on the phone Monday morning in search of a replacement part. Just want to say thanks to all in the group. A real blessing to have all this knowledge in one spot.

Great party. Thanks to all who attended.
I counted at least 21 teeners. (not all at the same time)
It was good to have a bunch of 'flow' people. Most came for all 3 days. Some for a few hours. Some for a meal. Some for just 1 day. All are welcome.

It was over much to quick. Let's do it again.
Next year will be a traveling circus. MDB2.gif
Start Friday in one town and drive to a new town for Saturday night.
Please - any suggestions on where? confused24.gif

As usual, Elvira got me safely home. wub.gif
For the first time ever, I took the most direct route home.
The transmission worked fine and growled the entire way.
At mid/low rpms it sounds like a race car with straight cut gears.

Awards. first.gif
Best of Show - SoCalAndy
Most 914 Spirit - Brant
Best Original 914 - Ravi
Best Custom 914 - Elliot
Loudest 914 - Mike Wills
Lowest 914 - Me

Sorry Alan and to your wife for not able to visit your house! We have to help Andy on his car at the restaurant parking lot. Some members who went to your place they said that you have a very very nice house and they even mentioned that you might plan of selling your house! Hoping before you will be able to sell it, the next time the group will have the event can still visit your place as part of the venue on the itineraries.
God Bless!

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend. Was a bummer not to have my car but was still great to see everyone. Just goes to show you even if you don't have your 914 for an event. You will still have a great time. My son & I left about 5:30 this morning. 1123miles later we are home safely.

We made it home to MN. A very special thank you to Alan and Terry for sharing their beautiful MCM home with us and for the invitation to stay with them for the weekend. 7 of 9 is parked next to Alan's 914. They are keeping each other company until we return next month for the WCR. Maybe they will assimilate. assimilate.gif happy11.gif

Of all the events Sandy and I have attended we have never been able to make the Route 66. We were committed this year what ever it took. Leaving MN we hit a snow storm head on and pushed on through it. Fortunately we chose the path of least resistance for the rest of the journey. A little more snow as we left Denver heading west. From there it was clear roads and good times!

We were able to caravan out to PS via Route 66 with JP, Jamie and his son JT and Brant.

We are glad to have finally made one of the best events of the year! The west truly has some of the best driving roads in the country. Thanks for the hard work John! and thank my Dr. for the shot. smile.gif

See you all in a month!

That is a long drive and Thank God for your safe trip!

Thank you also John Peterson! for allowing us to join the event even without advance noticed (although I just mentioned it to Lawrence friday night that me and Corey will be joining in the morning). And to all the members for your warm welcome to event newbies. Everyone are so nice and a real 914world member in terms of support, kindness, humble and many more!

Hope everyone made it home safe and for those still on the road take care and have safe trip. Including who flew back like Rick and his family!

Great time as always. Home safe and even had the benefit of some overcast skies for part of the trip. Met a lot of new people this year! It would be awesome if we could get that many new faces at all the events!

Wish I could make West Coast but I can't. Hope to see you all in September for Red Rocks!

Huge props to John for organizing everything!

Palm springs was unseasonably HOT even for this time of year, but it proved to be a great place for 914 junkies. The drive we did on Saturday morning will always be etched in my mind. At the start, it was like the start of an all 914 race. In the twistys, Speedy gave it his all and at the downhill part at the end, it was all or nothing, with a sheer cliff on one side. The drive back was incredible; looking in my mirrors and seeing nothing but Porsche 914s three and four wide as far as I could see!

Posted by: 76-914 Mar 30 2015, 08:41 AM

I filled up about 10 miles from home and this guy on a Harley came up to me and said, "I haven't seen a 914 in years but today I saw 15 or 20 of them in Palm Springs and now I see another!" lol-2.gif

Brant stopped by work on his way out of town. Don't know whether he is taking I15 thru Vegas or I40 to Alb. Either way it will be hot for a while.

He managed to play in Newport Beach, Balboa Island and had the clam chowder at the Crab Cooker. He said he had his fill of the Pacific Ocean.

Good luck on the journey Brant Brnat! biggrin.gif

The absolute worse part of the whole damn weekend was, one of our beloved members got so "faced" he fell asleep in the dirt under a palm tree and NOBODY thought to take a picture or even get creative with a large black "magic marker".
