914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 1.7l rebuild for fun

Posted by: Cfletch Dec 17 2014, 02:50 PM

Iv got my original 1.7 engine thats in need of a rebuild and I really dont need to rebuild it right now as I am working on my /6 conversion, but am curious of how much the average rebuild runs? I have never rebuilt an engine and would like to give it a try on this one.

Difficult to give you a good answer. Most likely the heads are going to be kinda worn out, and you're gonna need new everything. Plan on $2500-4000 if you do the work yourself, other than the machining that may be required. You can easily spend $2K on the heads alone. Keep in mind I have a set of NOS 1.7 high compression pistons that need to go to a good home.

Whatcha looking for on those pistons?

If you maintain and reuse the Pistons and cylinders, and do a basic valve job, it will be around 2500 inclusive of the valve job.
Parts or typically about 2k.

$450. I already have an interested party. I may also have a set of 1.8s, but I need to look.

Yup, but I am not available for the 100 hours of research to decode these motors.
Jumping in with both feet, somewhat blind is a great way to waste a lot of money for me.

... which is precisely why I've put of rebuilding one for so long. At this point in my life, I need to balance the price that I pay for parts with what I actually learn in the process. Wish I had gotten into type IVs back when my dad was working on his buses in the 1980s and 1990s. Parts were so much cheaper.

At this point, the 2500 put toward rebuilding a 1.7 would be better served, for me, putting toward a baby, my house, or (eventually) a Suby conversion. More bang for the buck.

For now, I wish there was someone close by who was rebuilding an aircooled motor that I could watch and learn from. Maybe I need to give Joe O'Brien a call...

We are getting ready to rebuild a 1.7L and going to do a full how-to article on it. Give me a month and it will be done.

Joe has my 2.0 apart now. In the process of part gathering. Give him a call it will be a little while before assembly occurs
