JANUARY ISSUE IS OUT

IPB Image

_______

I hope I don't regret asking. biggrin.gif I am looking for feedback on the magazine. We now have an automated distribution system set up, so that should be fixed and you should see a large improvement with the upcoming issue.

I am particularly interested in feedback on content. Here are my questions:

Content - The most important thing is - what do you think of the stuff we are covering? Is it what you want to read? What would you like to see added?

Then beyond content here are some things that I am pondering:
A. Balance between features, tech, and news/events. Do you like the balance?
B. Balance between photos and text - What do you think?
C. Length - We are at 44 pages now, but, we have very few ads. Most magazines run at least 50% ads. So from a content standpoint, I don't think we are doing too badly for a brand new magazine. I'd like to add 4 pages soon, but, I may wait until the January issue to do that, unless you give me feedback that there isn't enough in each issue.
D. Size - this is an important one. I went with the small size for two reasons: 1: I like it and think it is easy to carry around with you. And then 2: Cost. It cut our print costs almost in half. But, the size makes for doing full stories difficult. As a solution, I have considered doing a more detailed story on the website and readers could go over to the website for more photos, build sheets, etc. But, I wonder how many people would actually go from the magazine to the website to read more.
E. Overall feel - it is important to me that the overall feel be that of a professional magazine. Are we accomplishing that with the size and length? Is there anything we can do to improve in this area?
F. My original intent was a more "tech-related" magazine than say a Pano or Excellence. Not just features, but, useful info. Have we accomplished that? Do you value that angle?
G. What other resources would you like to see included in the magazine?

Any other comments? The magazine is about you. So your feedback is really important to me.

UPDATE:

The Fourteener Motoring Magazine website is live. It is a "soft launch," and is by no means complete. The website will carry articles between issues, long running series' (like project cars), and the articles from issues after they are published. The first issue of the print magazine ran behind because of design conflicts (we are using a unique format that took some working out). We have worked them out now. In addition, given the importance of the Amelia Island honoring of the 914 I thought it would be good to include it in the first issue. The first print issue will be out the first week of April, and will include Amelia Island, Eric's Trip, and some other great stories. We will be sending emails out to subscribers in the next couple of weeks. We have decided to provide the PDF for free, and the print version for a subscription of $19.99 per year.
___

In assembling the 914 calendar we just finished, I had the opportunity to go through a lot of pictures of great 914s. They were very inspiring. In addition, a number of people sent me the "story" of their car. What struck me the most was that each car is a work of art (regardless of its current condition), with a story behind it. A story that should be told.

I decided to take on the project of creating a print publication dedicated to the 914, called Fourteener Motoring (since the car was called the "Fourteener" internally at Porsche). A decade or so ago I founded a small, industry magazine for the field I was involved in. It is something that I think will fit in the 914 community well.

The magazine will be published quarterly, at least initially. I am using a small format that will fit in the glovebox. It will include feature stories, tech articles, product reviews, racing coverage, as well as event news and stories. My goal is to put something out closer to the magazines that were actually fun and useful to read when I was getting into cars in the 1970s.

A traditional magazine revenue model would likely not work in this small of a niche. So, I am going to do it a little differently. Subscriptions are FREE, at least for as long as I can make that work. I will evaluate it more as time goes on. But, I would like to try a free model.

Cool! I think I subscribed. Thanks for doing this

Free will work with this crowd biggrin.gif

So I take it by "free" you are hoping that adverting will cover the costs?

What about to Canada and foreign countries?
Of these owners the Canadian following is the biggest with the rest of all foreign around the same size of a group. In all I'm guessing this is about 5% of the total 914world members/subscribers.

One of things that bothers me about current magazines is that 50% or more of the pages of a modern magazine are advertising. I like ads. Some are helpful. But, I don't want to have to hunt between them for useful and interesting stories. I am sure that we will do some ads, if someone wants to run one. But, that isn't the goal. I'd like to see if we can create an old-school, interesting and useful magazine for the 914. And I still believe there is a place for paper (if only a a small place), in the right context. By only doing it quarterly, and formatting it to fit in the glovebox, I can get the cost down pretty good. Also, by making it free, it isn't a "business," and stays fun for me.

I will check on the postage to Canada and elsewhere. Assuming it isn't too much, we will mail it there for free as well. One of the first articles we have lined up is about a car in Great Britain. We want to include everybody.

Instead of print, would it be a benefit to you to have it in PDF form and we can download and print from there? Save you on paper, etc. and postage would be no problem. idea.gif

I considered that. Quite a bit. It saves a healthy amount in shipping and paper. But, I wondered whether most people would print it. And even if they did, they would end up with lose paper. So, most would likely just read the pdf on their device, which brings it back to a similar medium as a website.

I also considered doing a straight website. But, I still believe that paper has value, particularly for a car magazine. You can take it to the garage, or wherever, and if your like me - keep it. I'd like to try traditional paper, and see where it goes. It really depends on the size of the subscription base. The more the better. But, this niche is very small, in magazine terms.

I am certainly open to comments and suggestions, though. Tell me what you think.

Interesting... being a "magazine", even in PDF form, you'd still have editoral content control and it would be your domain whereas another website is just another website- we've got a damn good one here. A printed download wouldn't look as slick as your professional touch sounds like it would but printed off we'd still use it in the garage. I'd like to see you print one up! Digging up info and pics for us to submit would be a challenge also, make us think about what content we'd like to see also.

Another thing to consider is the vendors that you will eventually ask to support your effort. Most slightly more than hobby shops with thin margins. They donate their stuff for events throughout the year, some donate to toys for tots so they can get a banner here. Not trying to discourage you but IMO your dipping into a shallow well.

Very good points. Ya, we already have the best forum in the world right here. We don't need another one. I am more interested in helping deliver stories, how-to, event coverage, etc. Short and long-form articles. I considered doing a "website" - i.e., an online magazine. But, I still think print has value in this niche. We will give the print a go, and see where it takes us. If the subscription base stays small, we would look at either a pdf to print, or charging a small fee or something to cover shipping down the road. But, right now, I am committed to doing it out of pocket in 2015 and seeing where it takes us. I love an adventure.

I know. A very shallow well, indeed. My wife and I discussed that extensively when we considered whether we wanted to give this a go. But, I have a day job. This isn't about the money for us. It is just something we'd like to do; a hobby or project for us as well. Although we will let vendors advertise if they want, ad income is not part of our basic model. We'd like to get some of these stories out there, and see where it goes.

Here's a niche magazine for a similar number of enthusiasts, done on a website with the option of downloading a PDF. Very few ads, no subscription fee. An email is sent each month with a link to the current issue:

http://www.themooneyflyer.com/

Once the mechanics are set up on the website, it looks like just PDF skills would be required.

Stevegm you sound a lot like me- you have a healthy aversion to "committee" work. I believe you should just have sprung this on us with a printed copy ready to go. As soon as a good idea is made public it immediately gets watered down with everyone else's opinions. Go for it the way you envisioned it; its your idea and labor.

Sounds like a cool idea. We have loads of how-tos right here. I for one would love to see them organized, cleaned up and put into a more searchable format. You would need the authors and Andy's consent, but that well could supply at least one column for years. We have some killer build threads that could be worked into magazine article format.

Just a few more ideas (incase you don't have enough). biggrin.gif

Hi Steve,
I don't think it's a good idea. popcorn[1].gif
Reason: It's a lot of work and the question I ask??? Will it be in production in,
(1) year: Answer, yes.
(2-3) years: Answer maybe??
(5) years: Answer, No. because you will be burned out. Too many other healthy magazines have staff, money and lots of new materials.
I like you, but we need you hanging around forever & not burning yourself out.
My humble opinion. stirthepot.gif

Thanks. It'll work out fine. Besides, those other magazines aren't writing about us. I don't get burned out often. And I've got a little magazine experience. It's also just a project. A dedicated 914 magazine could be fun if its not too much work for you. Didn't we recently have a magazine...who was it...Mike ______, didn't Porsche shut them down?

In the past I maintained a number subscriptions and organized piles of magazines for when I wanted to go back and read them again...seldom happened and not worth the real estate or the paper or the postage to my way of thinking, now that we are in the 21st century. There will always be a place for print media I suppose, but its quickly going out of preference, many would say it already has.

Additionally, the internet is so prolific in disseminating information, the previous print media that still exist are but a shell of their former self and like you say, are mostly ads. Don't set yourself up for failure, make those hard decisions now for long term success.

If it were me, I would not set up a time commitment for a certain date to publish 'quarterly'. Just issue them now and the when you have material for the next issue. Getting tied to a date, puts pressure on a deadline more than quality, which I thought was your priority. Labor of love remember, not deadlines.

I don't keep any magazines now, or most print materials, only the articles and books I am interested in are scanned and kept digitally.

I would only be interested in this if it is available in PDF. If it will be let me know, I will subscribe. Save the trees, save the postage, you'll get 1,000,000 times more circulation if it can be passed around as a PDF.

Keep the fires burning...

I dunno, it sounds cool—and it's cool that you want to do it.

Sounds a bit like the old Twin Trunks Tribune, which I loved, and the early R Gruppe "magazine," which I also loved.

Also sounds like you've got pretty realistic expectations—so why not pursue it? beerchug.gif

This printed magazine idea sounds pretty darn cool to me. It's a classic medium to tell stories about a classic automobile. I can't wait to read the first issue. chowtime.gif

Steve, work on it as long as it makes you happy.

Posted by: sb914 Dec 22 2014, 08:54 AM

I say go for it .I have some experience in this.i started a local surf newspaper full color with local kids and adults,it was free with local business's advertising.it was all for fun everyone loved it,until the economy went south. I lost my advertisers and could no longer do it anymore.the major cost is of course is printing and distribution. Tons of work as well layout, getting stories, pics, ads ,but to see the look on a kids face when he or she seen there selfs was priceless.this was around seven years ago and i still see it. people still do like to hold a paper and read in there own hands.it don't get throne away they keep it.unless your pockets are super deep you will need some ads. I'm sure you can get most of the member vendors to advertise.have fun with it,DON'T treat it like a business, make it a fun project for you. If you have any questions pm me. Can't wait to see this go to print.it will be very successful and everyone will love it. wub.gif

I FINALLY found a Porsche magazine I like, Esses, and subscribed. It covers only early 911's and I wish they would expand it to include 914's.....but I doubt there is a chance :-) Anyway, for those not familiar, check out early911registry.org.

Okay, nice glossy mag, lots of photos and stories, mostly reader submitted, supported by ads in segregated pages. I'll send you an extra copy if you haven't seen it. I got a first copy free at Zim's Autotech in Dallas at their Porsche swap meet a couple of months ago.

So PDF vs. paper?.......you can't take PDF in for...ahh...morning reading sessions.

Count me in. Good luck.

A digital format, like PDF, opens the content to be more interactive. As you think about having interesting stories, what better than to have them occasionally with video as well. Imagine having resident enthusiasts like Eric, dr. evil, etc share 914 tips like brakes, transmissions etc. I'm with Jeff, you should think about on your subscription account sign-up page the option for paper or just digital.

Excellent ideas. Thanks. Let me also think a little about the idea of giving a print or pdf option.

Hey, the 911 has it's own magazine.s. Even just for vintage ones. I love this idea. I love that it's been given an "insider" name. I've always hated the nickname "teener" and refuse to refer it as such. Sounds like teenager. And also doesn't take the car seriously, which most didn't or respect who didn't have one. "Fourteener" refers to the model number. I like it. I also like the idea of a print magazine. Something that is tangible, we can hold in our hands, go back and look at and even collect. Something that years from now we can go back to and look upon and hold and know that something was dedicated just for this car. Print is something that ages. It becomes history.

Thanks. That sums up my thought process very well. I originally considered doing all air-cooled Porsches. It would certainly increase the potential subscription base substantially. But, it has been done, and it waters the reader loyalty down. Ultimately, my heart lies in the 914 (the mistress of my youth). And right now I can only do so much. So, I decided to stick with the 914 only, and wanted an "insider" name. Karl Ludvigsen's book (Excellence was Expected) provided it in the 914 chapter. I, too, have been less than fond of the "teener" name people use to refer to the car. But, when I read that the factory called it the - Fourteener - it changed my perception completely. I knew instantly that that had to be the name.

This conversation has been very helpful. I sincerely appreciate, and consider, every comment. Maybe I will run a poll to determine a preference between print vs. digital pdf. The suggestion of interactive resources is really an excellent point. One realistic model could call for a free pdf, or paid print magazine. The pdf idea is also attractive because of the ability to share it online. Ultimately, the size of the reader base almost always determines the success of a magazine. This niche is very small. I don't want to do anything to inadvertently make it smaller for the magazine because it can't be shared as easily as a digital copy.

Greetings from Germany! smilie_flagge6.gif

I personally really appreciate good print material and have a lot of experience over 20 years of printing my own brochures / publications here in Munich for Mike's Bike Tours, my Good Food Guide, a guide of Munich, my board game, Globopolis...www.globopolis.net among other projects, the latest being an 8 page (A4..similar to 8.5x11) brochure for a campaign I am leading in my community to have a so-called Multi Aktiv Sportplatz built here. www.mas-unterfoehring.de

That background is intended to serve as perspective for the opinion I want to express here. I know about labor of love for no profit...MAS is such a project for me, and as mentioned, I know about printing and the satisfaction one has when the product comes off the press. I called that, when my board game was finished...MIC. Multiple Identical Copies. biggrin.gif It's sweet, yes, it is. piratenanner.gif

That all being said, I would like to offer my opinion regarding this idea of a free, as I imagine it "newsletter-like" quarterly publication. Clearly as conceived thus far it will require a lot of time (especially if it goes beyond being "newsletter-like") and require money to print and deliver. IMO a website can offer those interested more content than the magazine concept and INCLUDE the magazine format as a pdf. For those that would like to have it in hand in a relatively "production" format as opposed to just coming off their own printer...they can take it to their local Kinkos or copy shop and have them print it, which could also be done by email.

But that is not the main thrust of my opinion, which is to print a really NICE magazine on an annual basis for the following reasons:

1) consolidated material...best of the year kinda stuff in a larger, nicer magazine will have a much sweeter degree of satisfaction for you, Steve, as this would be the culmination of a year's work and material. first.gif

2) it would be something which most of us would pay e.g. $5 for which would at least cover your production and shipping costs

3) it is something that would more likely be preserved and never thrown away, so that in 50 years there would still be some or many of them in the hands of 914 owners

4) it would be easy to get AA, Camp 914 et. al. to sponsor for advertising

5) there would be less, constant pressure to get the next (quarterly) issue out poke.gif

6) the website format / project would more easily allow for it to be a community project which many would contribute to. beerchug.gif

...and I could come up with a few more reasons beyond those as well.

No matter what you choose to do, you may want to compare printing costs online with these two online printers which I have used extensively over here, just for purposes of comparison with North America prices, which I believe are higher and higher than they need to be, giving you an idea of what kind of margin the printers over there are working with. It is easy to choose a format, paper quality, number of copies, etc. and immediately find out what the cost would be, over here at least, in Euros. Multiply that figure by 1.20 or whatever the exchange rate is to get the US$ figure.

www.wir-machen-druck.de and www.flyeralarm.de

Good luck. I would love to buy your annual, top-notch production for $5. I would pay $10 for it if it was really well done, which naturally it could and I imagine would be. Again, IMO, this concept is, at least for me, far more interesting than a more frequent yet "lessor" production that would not as much be a real collector's item in and of itself. And beyond that, the idea of doing it all for free...beh! barf.gif Screw free. We don't and you certainly don't need "free". confused24.gif

Wanted to edit...unedited post appeared as well as edited. Cannot figure out how to delete original post. ??

Posted by: MikeInMunich Dec 26 2014, 03:47 AM

Just checked Wir Machen Druck...

152 pages, 70g inside, 300g cover...A4 (30cm x 21cm)...2000 copies: Under $2 apiece. For 500 copies...$5.50 apiece but $1,500 less total production cost.

https://www.wir-machen-druck.de/Broschuere-mit-Drahtheftung-Endformat-DIN-A4-152-seitig,detail,747.html

This is clearly just to offer an idea of print costs for a larger magazine. Larger than 152 pages not possible with them. Paper other than 70g also not, which I think is too thin.

Looking at a smaller production with 48 pages...90g inside and a 170g cover...

1,000...running at about $1.50 apiece. This, times 4 would be over $5.00 production cost per year per subscriber...and shipping...500 subscriptions...times 4 = 2000 mailings annually...2000 envelopes and over $2000 additional costs. This adds up to something like $5k per year, not to mention your time, and again, I'm not sure if you can get these prices over there, though I reckon it should be possible. Costs are in any case the same or less.

QUOTE(stevegm @ Dec 21 2014, 10:04 AM) *

To subscribe to the magazine you can go to - fourteenermotoring.com. When you subscribe you will receive an email requesting that you send a physical address where the magazine can be mailed.

If you have a 914 story that you think should be told, or are interested in writing an article (or two, etc.), covering events, or helping in any way, please PM me or email me at - stevegm@mac.com

Steve,
Please put me on the subscription list.

Steve,

I would favour the electronic format as I live in Australia.

I subscribe to the English mag 'Classic Porsche' which I download on to the iPad. In moments of boredom I often go back to re read articles from back issues without having lots of bookshelf space tied up.

It would be nice in an app form perhaps or maybe embedded in 914world as a mag without your losing ownership and autonomy.

It is a very generous concept of yours and characteristic of the overall generosity of spirit of this community. We are very fortunate.

I am sure suggestions for content will be forthcoming and so I may as we'll put my oar in.

I would like to see some profile articles of the 'elders' of this community ie people with the cred and frequent contributors. We have all been the beneficiaries of the advice from the likes of Eric Shea, Dr Evil, Mark Whitesell, Chris Foley etc and we could even profile George Hussey fromAA - a much maligned figure but I bet most of us have his catalog and 700 Hints book.

I would also like to know how the 914's we're put together on the assembly line. Who was responsible for the gearshift adjustment before the car went out the gate? Probably a topic for a PHd in anthropology

Good luck Steve. I don't think you should be doing a project like this for nothing.

David

Posted by: stevegm Dec 27 2014, 11:43 AM

Thank you to everyone for their support and encouragement. Your suggestions have been very helpful. And the number of subscriptions has exceeded our expectations. Thank you. We are reconsidering our model based on your comments. We have also received quite a few emails both from people wiling to write for the magazine, as well as potential story ideas. I think you will like what we have planned. Let me give you a little of the logic behind the decision to make the magazine free.

Magazines live and die based on subscription base. The number of people that subscribe is the first, second, and third priority. The 914 niche is not large enough to support a traditional magazine, which typically enjoys well in excess of 20,000 subscribers, even for the small auto magazines. Based on research, it appears that only about 20,000 914s are left, worldwide, in total. And many of those are owned by people who own multiple cars. We truly are a small community.

In other words, we need every last 914 enthusiast to be a subscriber (please share the link with every 914 enthusiast you know). If we charge any fee at all associated with a subscription, even $1 per year, we won't get everyone to subscribe. It isn't just the $1 itself that will cause people to not subscribe. Many people don't bother if they have to send in money, or don't use Paypal, etc. Charging a subscription hurts subscriptions, and I don't want to impede subscriptions in any way.

I still believe print has value in certain situations, and cars is one of those. But, I hear your comments regarding the potential interactive benefits of a digital magazine. Those suggestions are the ones that really got me to reconsider the model. What I have been working on this week to determine if it will work is this:

Free PDF version of the magazine delivered via email;
Optional paid print magazine delivered via snail mail (all print subscribers could also receive the PDF version).

The risk of this model is that the number of paid print subscribers will be so low that it will drive up the printing costs per unit, and make it impossible to continue the print version. This is not something I want to see happen, as I believe the print version has value. And I further believe that when you see the quality that I think we can put out you will agree.

I need to know from you how many of you would be willing to pay for the print version, over the free PDF, in this model? I suspect that the paid subscription, for the quarterly publication, would be $15 to $20/year. This feedback will help us further evaluate the best way to set this up.

Here is the poll - http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=247292&st=0#entry2126969

Sorry for the second thread for the poll, once a thread is started it doesn't appear that you can add a poll to it.

Steve

Thank you for all of the feedback. It has been very helpful. We are expecting the first issue (1st quarter of 2015), to mail on March 1st.

We are looking for someone that would like to write an article about the current market for 914s. Both 4s and 6s. If your interested PM me. The pay sucks. But, it's interesting work.

Other writers we need:

1. Is anyone doing a 6 conversion that would like to write about it.
2. Racing events, experiences, etc.
3. 914 events in general.

Hi Steve!

A great idea! I like a hard copy version!

As a price benchmark I suggest the following German mags to you as a benchmark.

They all are published only once or twice a year:

VW Classics (5.90 EUR)
Porsche Klassik (8.00 EUR)
Käfer Revue (5.50 EUR)

Good luck!

Thank you for all of your feedback. It was very helpful. We have made some decisions. We plan to offer a PDF version for free and a print version for a subscription of $19.99 per year. Based on what everyone's comments, we reconsidered our model to make sure it is providing the most value to the 914 community, as well as being a sustainable project. In addition, there was an overwhelming consensus that a print version has value.

The magazine layout, styles, etc. have all be designed. Most of the articles for the first issue are in and are being edited. We expect the first issue to go to print in about a month. Hey now I'm subscribed yippy! but reading a good portion of the folks who weren't into it because of various reasons, most concern for your finances!! so why not take donations on your website?I saw people saying money for postage, paper but no one mentioned the cost of ink! A very expensive medium indeed! I know people would donate just to have a cool mag to COLLECT!Some said save the trees and I am a lover of the earth my home but there is recycled or partially recycled ect.. so anyway I say we donate to fourteener mag !!Personally I get sick of being on the computer all the time anyway!!KUDOS

To: jeff bowlsby: hey man this will be a magazine to collect not just throw away. You know passed on to your children. LOL I bet you live in a wooden house.

I hear you. I'm not one to ask for donations. Rather than make a donation, I'd rather see everyone buy a - Save the 914 - shirt, or something. I think we have a model that will work with a free PDF (to make sure that everybody that wants it gets it), and a paid print subscription. That will cover both angles. The thing that makes this difficult is simply the size of the 914 community. While the number of people that have signed up has been very good, the overall 914 community is very small in magazine terms. Even if everyone that is active in 914world subscribed, it is still a fairly small number compared to a traditional magazine base (easily 20,000 or more). So, you can't use a traditional model with this magazine. And I am not doing this for the money. So, it's all good. We will make it work. And I think you will find the magazine provides value.

I have an early Pete Stout submission for Twin Trunks Tribune, that I'm holding for ransom; now that he's a big time Porsche magazine heavyweight lol-2.gif

Glad you like it? I'd like to make some improvements in the next issue:

1. The centerfold needs to actually be in the center (design oversight).
2. More help/how-to/tips for 914 owners.
3. Some Subaru conversion stuff
4. Perhaps most importantly, we would like to get more senior members of 914world involved. They have a lot of knowledge to share. We would love to have them help with some articles.

But, overall, I think it is a good start.

I'm going to sign up for the print subscription, so please save me a first edition copy!

I signed up for the pdf earlier, but it seems I'd be better off with something in the real mailbox...

I'll watch for it. All of the PDF version emails have been sent out. Our system for keeping track of and distributing the PDF version is not as good as the one for the print version. We are working out the kinks. But, they have all been sent out (I hope they all made it; fingers crossed). I do like the print version though. I just like a good old print magazine to carry around with me. Maybe I am just old.

No it isn't too late, we will close it out at the end of the week. So, if you subscribe now your first issue will be Issue 1 (April 2015).

All orders to date (including ones that came in this morning) are shipped out now. So we are shipping on date of subscription now.

Please include your address in the PM. My apologies. We haven't had any issues with the print ones not arriving. So I'll have to look into it.

First, let me say thanks to everyone for their patience.

The print version distribution went smoothly (until I went on vacation. But, then again, my wife deserved a break, and as the CFO she funds my 914 fun. :-) The system we used to distribute the email PDF version, however, didn't work well. I have been involved with three magazines in the past (One I founded about a decade ago, Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports). But, with those we didn't do email pdf versions. So, we are still figuring that side of it out. Also, normally, subscriptions ordered after the drop date of an issue start with the next issue. But, with the first issue, we had a lot of people request that first issue even though they subscribed after April 1st (understandably so). And we want to accommodate those that want the first issue to have a complete set. Moving forward with future issues, the deadline for subscriptions to include a particular issue (other than ordering a back issue) will be the print date of the issue.

Anyhow, long story short, we are working through the bugs, and I appreciate your patience. I will verify all orders of magazines, shirts, and posters, etc. this weekend and make sure they have all been fulfilled. I think they have (with the exception of the lady's Save the 914 shirts and lady's The Other Woman is a 914 shirts, both of which should be done next week)

Here are the print dates for the issues in 2015, etc.

Issue 1 - April 1st. We still have some extra copies. If you want one let me know.
Issue 2 - July 1st
Issue 3 - October 1st
Issue 4 - January 1st
And so on.

I think we now have a system in place to distribute these smoothly. Thank you again for your support and patience. We couldn't do it without you.

BTW: The stories we have for issue 2 are great. I hope you enjoy it.

Posted by: stevegm Jun 6 2015, 08:32 AM

I can report that all orders have been shipped, with the exception of the lady's t-shirts (which should be done this week). If you would like a lady's t-shirt (or poster, t-shirt, etc.) you can order them here - savethe914.com

Until we get the email PDF issue resolved fully, you can download a PDF copy of the first issue of the magazine here - https://fourteenermotoring.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/fourteener-motoring-magazine-issue-1.pdf

Thanks again for your patience. Now out to the garage to get the 914 ready for Okteenerfest.

Thanks. No, I just worked with them about a decade ago on some projects. I've known the owners since they founded it in the 80s. One of my 914s was on the cover back then. Grassroots and Classic Motorsports are both great magazines.

We made quite a few changes for issue 2 - centerfold, more modern look, full bleed photos, more tech stuff, improved how-to layout, more cars, more events, and in Issue 3 we are starting a series of articles on the history of the 914. I'd still like to get more Subaru conversion stuff, and more about the people behind the cars. But it's a work in progress.

The electronic/PDF version has been a challenge (go figure?). Bounced emails, bad emails, large file, etc. We didn't have an efficient way to send out such a large number of emails at once. I should be able to get it on the website today. The currently thinking is to put it up on the site and let people download it, rather than send it out via email. It will, however, lag the print version a little.

Ya, that's what we are working on now. Sending out a thousand emails didn't prove to be efficient. Too many bounces back, etc. We are working on making it a downloadable file on the website after the print copy of each issue is mailed.

We are looking for a nice Subaru conversion to feature in the magazine later this year. If you have one, please PM me.

Steve;

Over the years, the readership of this site has benefitted tremendously from the wisdom and sage advise given by the late John Larson, aka Cap'n Krusty. What if you were to publish a special glove box booklet devoted to the topics he responded to?? I would be ready to shell out a decent amount for such a project. It would preserve his legacy. We could even designate part of the income as a donation to his favorite charity.

How easy would it be to extract the information from 914world archives? Are there any copyright hurdles to overcome?

Steve,

I thought I was on the list of those getting a pdf...sounds like maybe the printed version would be the better way to go...what do I have to do?

QUOTE(stevegm @ Jun 5 2015, 04:01 PM) *

I figured I would also let you know.... I did receive #1 print version.... but nothing else after that. No email version, and no 2nd issue.

I wanted to make sure that you everyone saw that the downloadable PDF of the July issue is available on the website. Just go to - http://fourteenermotoring.com - and click on - Read Issue 2 in the menu. Right now, I think this is the best way to handle the PDF version. It will lag the print version by a few weeks for each issue. But, then it will be available to download on the website.

The print version of the October issue goes to press September 7th, and will be mailed October 1st. We have moved all of our deadlines up to make sure these go out on time, in addition to making changes in an effort to automate our distribution system. If you want a subscription to the print version of the magazine, you can http://savethe914.com

Finally, if you know anyone with a 914, please tell them about the magazine. The 914 community is a relatively small one. Whether it is the print version or the PDF download, it is our goal to have everyone involved and receiving the magazine. Spread the word.

One thing that's missing is a "Letters to the Editor" section. You as an editor would get feedback on what people think about the content, and other readers would see what people think about certain topics....but I would rather see that on the website, rather than in the hard copy...

Maybe a 914World forum topic for each issue, to generate discussion, and drive subscriptions?

Posted by: mobymutt Aug 19 2015, 06:34 PM

I am enjoying the magazine, thank you for all your hard work! My only disappointment is that the small format doesn't allow for big pictures. And my 914 calendar only goes to December...

Thanks. I agree. That is my one problem with the small size. I repriced increasing the size of the magazine this week. Just to double check it. It almost doubles the cost, which is more than is possible given the small niche subscription base. I am constantly looking for solutions, but, have yet to find one.

We will start working on the 2016 calendar soon. We are planning to post a poll in 914world to determine the theme for the calendar. Stay tuned . . . .

All of the subscriptions are mailed at roughly the same time. There are numerous variables that determine when your issue arrives such as location, etc. Please note that subscription orders placed more than 30 days after an issue is published will begin with the next issue. We have had a few people email us because they subscribed 2 weeks before the next issue came out, but thought we were going to send the prior issue. We are happy to send you the back issue if we still have copies. But, our general practice is to start the subscription with the next issue, after the subscription date.

I hope this helps. Organizing periodic publications is fun. biggrin.gif

Please email - fourteenermotoring@gmail.com if you have a question about your subscription. We have so many going out now that I don't handle the mailing myself anymore. If you send an email to the magazine's email it will get addressed by the correct person, faster. When you email, please include your full name. Subscriptions are organized based on your full name, not 914world screen names. So, we need your full name to look it up.

One of my old time sailing buddies is holding a position as professor at Durham University. Currently, the whole family is in The Netherlands. Guess what we saw on the news: footage of the highway exit to their home covered in snow, snow, snow.

Average max snowheight for Durham is 1.9"... That number has been topped.

To be honest, overhere in Holland we've not seen serious snowflakes since December 2011. I suppose life will grind to a halt too when it really starts snowing.

Back on topic: the magazine is great. The issues you've mailed me are on the coffee table at the workshop where we repair and restore classic cars. Clients grab the magazines and always start talking about the 914.

Thanks. I really enjoy putting the magazine together. We have redesigned it quite a bit, added 8 pages, and continue to try to strike the right balance between features and technical content (this issue is probably a little too technical). It also has a lot of event coverage and some Magnus Walker 914 info and pictures. I think it is the best issue yet.

We are always looking for more people to write. Hint, hint . . . .

Posted by: Alfieg23 Jan 25 2016, 07:06 PM

I like the magazine's content although I would much prefer a standard magazine size vs. the smaller issues. Although I appreciate your efforts in minimizing the subscriber's cost, I would rather pay a little more and have the standard size magazine. You get what you pay for. Looking forward to issue #4. Keep up the good work.

Thanks. I am glad you enjoy it.

I hear you about increasing the size. Although the size does cut down on printing costs (it would almost double the cost to double its size), it helps in other ways as well. So to change the size would be very difficult, given the small 914 niche. I tried all year to figure out how to increase the size. I'd also like to increase it to 6 issues per year. But, we will see. We are working on some ideas. But it will be a few weeks before anything is final.

For the January issue, we added 8 pages, and tried to use the space more wisely. I think this issue is the best yet. And it is full of content:

Editorial
A featured six conversion
Okteenerfest
Rennsport reunion V
A conversation with Magnus Walker about his 914s
The Build-Off Challenge
How-To Rebuild the Bottme End of a 914/4 engine
Project Car
914 History
914 Tips
A new classifieds section

The next improvements will be to always continue to improve the quality of the photographs on features, and further increase the number of people writing articles.

Thanks to everyone for the input. One of the main suggestions I have gotten has been to increase the size of the magazine. We have been debating between increasing the frequency to 6 issues per year, or increase the size to a larger format. I think I prefer to increase the physical size, for a number of reasons. If we increase it to 7 by 10 (the same size as the old Pano magazine), it would give us more room for more content, as well as make the print and pictures larger.

My question is this - to increase the size of the magazine, we would need to increase the yearly subscription to $30.00 (for 4 issues). How does everyone feel about this?

It is most important that we keep readers. The last thing I want to do is run any readers off because the price went up.

Personally, I think the size is fine. If the choice is between more pages or a larger size, I'd vote for more pages.

What do I need to do to keep my subscription going?

Thanks. What type of content would you like to see more of?

We will add more pages over time. But increasing the overall size doesn't really impact the number of pages. Everything just gets a little larger.

For me, the cost is less important than the content. More content makes it worth the higher price. Same content not so much.....

We are always working to add more content and more pages. A larger format would give us more room for more misc. content. Not really more features, per se. But more odds and ends. Tid bits. And slightly larger text (very slight - like 1 or 2 points larger). But the biggest benefit would be larger pictures. Plus the magazine would present better overall.

Posted by: ChristopherB Feb 4 2016, 06:44 PM

I love the magazine and it has kept me motivated as I saved funds to repair my broken engine. I would love the larger format, as there would be room for more content and bigger pics.

A number of people suggested we increase the size of the magazine. We did a lot of work to see if we could make it work. We are increasing the overall size (similar size to the old Pano), starting with the April issue. It will give us space for more content (50% more space), bigger photos, and slightly larger text. I think it will be great, and can't wait to have more room to work with. beerchug.gif

We did an email version initially last year (in addition to the print version). But we ran into two problems - the size of the pdf file, and the admin associated with keeping up with that many email addresses (bounced emails, changes to email addresses, etc.). So we are focusing on the print version only. It is growing nicely. In that regard, we have increased the format (now it is the same size as the old Pano), and we are working with getting more writers, etc. The summer issue will be out in about a month, and includes some great 914s.

Hmm. All have shipped a while back. It could be a number of variables. Subscription ended and wasn't renewed? Or we could have just messed up. Accounting for subscriptions is the necessary evil of the magazine industry. :-) We are still learning how to handle it. Either way, PM me your first and last name and I will check it, and send you a copy today.

The Summer issue will be out in mid-August. I think you will like the stories.

I'm PM'ing Steve to make a clarification of the mailing address and see if that helps.

I really want to help make this work and support our community. It might be helpful if Steve would chime in here.

RENEWED!

Ya, most of the time when someone doesn't get their issue, it is a renewal issue. Or someone moved, and we don't have their current address. We send out an email about a month before the subscription renews, to remind people to renew. But, people forget to renew. Now that our subscription base has grown to a good size, we are purchasing a database system that will help handle renewals.

If anyone did not receive their Spring issue, please email us at - fourteenermotoring@gmail.com. The person that handles subscriptions isn't on 914world, and by emailing them at that address, it will ensure that you get to the right person and your subscription can be checked.

Now, let's calm down a bit guys. I also PP'd $ at the end of June and complained in an earlier post about not receiving anything. I then sent a PM to Steve and got a reply that my order came in after the spring issue was shipped and my subscription would start with the fall issue. That seems reasonable and I do want 914 support businesses to survive, so I will take a chill pill and give him a chance. If my experience proves my trust to be unwarranted believe me I will revolt but I believe it's way too early for that now.

I just PM'd you to get your name and address so I can confirm your copy was mailed. We have no plans to stop publishing the magazine. Most of the distribution issues have been largely worked through. Renewals are brutal to keep up with, because it is very laborious to remind everyone to renew. And 90% of the time when someone didn't get the issue it is because their subscription expired and they forgot to renew. We are still working through the best way to handle that.

The magazine schedule is aligned with the major 914 events of the year. We want to be able to cover those events in a timely fashion after the event. So we publish at the end of each calendar season, as follows:

Winter Issue - January/February/March
Spring issue - April/May/June
Summer Issue - July/August/September
Fall Issue - October/November/December

International issues lag a couple weeks because it takes longer to get there, as well as the fact that they are bundled separately.

Any idea on when the fall issue is due out?

Posted by: RARE 6 Dec 19 2016, 12:56 PM

This subscriber wouldn't mind receiving the summer issue while awaiting the fall one. Have only received January and Spring issues.

Posted by: Towarish Jan 9 2017, 12:06 PM

I made my subscription in jan. and got issue 4
For issue5 (spring) I had to ask 2 times and received it in august.
After that nothing more !
I asked for a refund, but no answer at all.

I'm the editor for a British car club magazine and I know there is a delay between the time you submit your PDF's for publication and when they actually print and mail. We publish quarterly as well and our latest issue (that I completed around January 1) is just now being received by our subscribers. If he uses MGXCopy (as we do) he may have similar lead times.

I have learned over the last year that getting a magazine published is very easy (and not that expensive!). For instance, for our small magazine of 300 copies (about 250 mailed domestically and 50 mailed internationally) the cost is around $1,000. Of course, advertising more than covers that cost.

*Saddle-Stitched Booklets
*Document Length: 28 Pages/Document
*Paper Type: 80 lb. Text, Gloss
*Dimension: 8.5"x11" (Portrait)

All the work is in getting good content. beer.gif

Posted by: stevegm Jan 25 2017, 03:43 PM

It's true - good content is hard to come by. But we have added a couple new writers. The content side is going well.

The lead times aren't really an issue. We plan them in. We adjusted the publication dates last year to better cover major 914 events, and to work with the distributor's schedule. But getting accurate distribution has been a challenge. Along with managing the timing of subscriptions and renewals. Too many of our subscribers aren't receiving them on time. And we are getting too many returned to us undelivered. We were farming the distribution out. I have decided to bring it back in house and handle it internally. So at least I will be able to know exactly who was mailed what, and when. In the next week, we will be able to publish specific publication dates (that I have management over) so that everyone knows exactly when to expect each issue this year. Thank you for your patience. We are still publishing, and plan to continue.

We won't give up. It's an honor to get to put it together. I underestimated the distribution issues when we started. And now we have a pretty large subscription and vendor base to manage when they go out. But, we will get the distribution fixed. I promise. I should have known it would be the hardest part of this thing. When I was at GRM/Classic Motorsports, keeping the subscriptions straight was a nightmare. They did a great job with it. But, it was a PITA. Changed addresses, renewals, slow mail, over seas issues. I think we have made a lot of headway bringing it in-house. I hope we have it nailed down now. I certainly appreciate everyone's patience. And if anyone ever has an issue, feel free to pm me or email me personally. I am happy help get it right.

Jeff, the best advise is in the post just above from Steve;

"If anyone did not receive their Spring issue, please email us at - fourteenermotoring@gmail.com. The person that handles subscriptions isn't on 914world, and by emailing them at that address, it will ensure that you get to the right person and your subscription can be checked."

I got my spring issue a couples weeks ago and it's very good

Brady

Haven't received anything since the spring 2016 issue and that was the ONLY issue I received. Now I've moved and not sure if it's even worth the bother to email, but I guess I will and see what happens.

Got one issue, then nothing confused24.gif guess I will wait my turn in line.

Posted by: stevegm Mar 5 2017, 12:43 PM

If you are missing an issue please email Julie - FourteenerMotoring@gmail.com. Please include your full name, since the subscriptions are organized by your name not your 914world screen name.

Posted by: stevegm Mar 5 2017, 01:06 PM

Let me first say that I apologize for any distribution mixups, and if you are missing any issue, let us know and we will mail it to you. As I previously mentioned, we have had a number of distribution issues over the past year. The number of subscribers has grown faster than we could have imagined. We have spent the past month making key changes to adjust to meet that growth.

The subscription base is now large enough to be a mess if it is not organized correctly, but too small to get decent service from a distribution company. So I fired the distributor, and spent the past month bringing that aspect of it in-house. Moving forward Julie will be handling the database, and organizing the mailings. She has experience in the area, and I believe it will resolve the issues.

While the magazine is basically a breakeven endeavor (not including our time), we are committed to continuing it. I hope it adds value to the 914 community. To help make things run more smoothly we are making a number of changes in how we handle distribution:

1. As mentioned above we have moved distribution in house. Julie has taken this aspect over. If you have any questions about your subscription, or missed any issues, you can email her at - FourteenerMotoring@gmail.com. We will immediately mail you any issue you missed.
2. All of the subscriptions are now being managed in a magazine database system separate from the online sale/purchase system, which we previously relied on.
3. When someone subscribes they will receive an email that confirms their address, when they subscribed, and when they can expect their issues.
4. We will begin automatic renewals. However, that does not mean we will automatically bill anyone's credit card for a renewal. Rather, a bill will automatically be generated and emailed 1 month prior to the subscription expiring. 2 additional emails will be sent as a follow up, related to renewals.
5. I will post in 914world when each issue comes out. So you know the specific date it was released. We value the community here very much, both with respect to the magazine, as well as personally. I think posting a thread when a new issue is published will help everyone here know that their magazine is coming.
6. We publish four times a year - Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. But, the magazines are published at the end of the respective season. We initially set those dates so they could be timed to provide coverage of the major 914 events each year. That has caused confusion and makes the magazine look like it is always late (based on the season). So, we are considering how we can make a change in that to better reflect its timing.

In the next two weeks, Julie will be emailing everybody who's subscription has expired. We find that often someone not getting an issue is a result of their subscription having expired. Since we were not doing automatic renewals, this wasn't getting updated when the subscription expired. She is also contacting everybody that have indicated they are missing an issue, and making sure they have all of the magazines.

I hope these changes make distribution run more smoothly. I appreciate your patience. As always, any suggestions anyone has are welcome. We love input, and value your opinions.

UPDATE: March 30, 2017: As I have mentioned, we traditionally printed the magazine at the end of the season. So for example, the winter issue comes out at the end of winter. But this has caused some subscribers to think they were getting the issue mailed to them late. To solve this problem, we are shifting the date of the issues. It does not effect the number of magazines received or when subscribers receive them. It just means that the Spring issue will come out at the beginning of Spring, and so on.

I agree. Everyone receives 4 issues in their subscription. If someone didn't get all 4 issues in their subscription, let us know and we will send them to you. We don't have any comp subscribers. We send extra issues to vendors. But all subscriptions are paid. I think the above post was referring to the fact that this is a nonprofit endeavor. But that doesn't change the fact that if you pay for a subscription you should get your issues. I take responsibility for our past problems. I will stand by it and make sure we make good on it. My post above just outlines the changes we have made, to resolve the distribution problems moving forward.

The next issue of Fourteener Motoring is mailing out. It took us a little extra time to get copyright permission on some of the photography. But, it was worth it. I think you will like this one.

- PMB Performance Feature
- 2017 Build-Off Challenge Round 1 results
- Werks Reunion East
- 356 Club of Southern California Swap and Show
- 1972 Project Car
- News
- Tech Tips

We spent considerable time implementing a new distribution tracking system, that we hope will take the kinks out. Also, like I mentioned about a month ago, we shifted the dates of the magazine. Previously, they were released at the end of each season - Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. But that caused considerable confusion because it made it seem like people were receiving it late when they weren't. So we shift the dates on them so that the "published date" coincides with the beginning of each season. So what would have been the winter 2017 issue (end of March) became the Spring issue (end of march). It doesn't change the number of issues a subscription receives, or when they get them. It just affected the season printed on the magazine, as the current issue became the spring issue. I hope that makes sense. :-)

Hi Steve, forgive me if this seems curt, but I will be direct to the point.
Many of us have talked on different forms about what’s up with the lack of distribution of the magazine and seeming nonexistent replies to communication attempts. I for one have voiced my concern over your well-being, as I think many have also considered as a reason for no communication and no distribution.
So, now to the point. If you are not well, or are dealing with some life issue, and are unable to put the attention into the magazine, please formulate some statement here on 914 world, and ask us to disseminate that information. And if you need specific assistance with some certain things, again ask the forums. With all the horrible crap going on in the world right now, I think doing nice things for one another, is a nice diversion from all the worldly crap.
I like Michael’s idea of doing an annual or maybe twice a year publication. However I think that should probably sell for about $15 US, have about 6 segments, separated by advertisers who are preferably 914 resource providers, and gets distributed quickly.
I also like the idea of using Fourteenermotoring.com as a paid members forum to offer content to forum moderators for possible inclusion in the annual or twice yearly subscription publication. Else, the content posted on the site following approval.

All of this may be too far down the road for you to consider, if your having a “lock will “turn in the barrel”, which I hope you’re not, but we would like to know how you are and what’s up.

Now I want a refund. Must be others out there wanting their money back too.

Posted by: stevegm Nov 2 2017, 07:48 PM

After three years, we have decided to cease publication of Fourteener Motoring magazine. The decision is based on two considerations:

1. The number of 914s left made the pool of potential subscribers small. I had hoped we could make it sustainable. But I was unable to do so at the quality and price point that I wanted.
2. My work commitments increased for most of this year and prevented me from giving it the attention it deserved. My time has recently freed up some. But I still need to allocate my time carefully.

We are committed to providing a refund for issues not delivered. We have been computing that information and emailing subscribers. We are presently through the first 1/3 of the list. If you have not received an email, you should over the next month.

The reason I took a couple months to announce this was that we were in conversations with a few of the major 914 vendors to determine if they were interested in picking up the task of publishing the magazine. Ultimately, they decided it required more effort than they could expend on it. It never produced a profit. It was a labor of love. Since it has been in existence for three years, with an annual loss each year, it would have moved to a “hobby” on my taxes next year, which would not allow us to even deduct the expenses of printing and mailing it. Our decision was considered carefully, as I believe the 914 deserves a magazine. Our model just didn’t work. It is important to me, however, that we explain why it didn’t work. Maybe somebody with a better model than I will put something together for the 914 someday.

We also considered moving it to digital pdf. That, however, doesn’t reduce the approximately 32 hours it takes to design/write each issue. We also have considered moving it onto a website, which would cut down on the time nessasary to publish a print magazine. And that is still a possibility. But right now, the subscribers signed up for a print magazine. Therefore, we will issue refunds.

Thanks to everybody who supported the magazine.
