Zois Av thread comes up every couple of months and its really pathetic that so much energy is spent on it. I think MZ just does it for attention, they certainly have nothing to do with 914s, which should be the focus of this forum.

idea.gif

Zois changed his avatar in the end anyway, so whats the point? 5000 posts was a waste of time and effort, lets not even pay attention in the future. He will do it again soon so be ready for it.

BTW, Kermit is Bay Area local Howard Y...a very fine AXer, concours participant and long time Ravenna green 914 fan...you guys have succeeded in bashing yet another fine 914 owner...all in the name of 'free speech'. Nothing against MZ personally, but those who defend his choice of offensive avatars (and others like him) are the losers, and you do a huge dis-service to the 914 community by tarnishing the image of this site. Standing around a garage talking about 914s is one think, but the conversations and behaviour go in the trash way too often.

I hope Howard Y stays around in spite of your intimidation, he is a great guy and a high caliber 914 owner. There are others equal to his stature who have not returned to this site becasue of the prejudgement and animosity promulgated here. You don't even know the guy.

Well, the thread is back now, (Thank you Lawrence) and I would like for everyone to read back through it. Jeff, you are making a general statement to everyone here on the board unfairly. I never once said anything bad about Kermit there or any other thread. I was merely supporting Mike's choice of expression. This is a garage as you say it and that means there is a door. There is a way for him to turn off the avatars in his own garage, nobody has the right to come into say my garage and tell me what I can or cannot post on the walls. That thread only got out of hand because everyone feels so strongly about it one way or another. It seemed to me, the general consensus was for MikeZ's avatars. You cant really generalize a statement like that towards everyone when it only applies to a few. Granted, those few know who they are and I agree they shouldnt have bashed on Kermit like that, he has the same right to free speech as any one of us does. That is their right and perogative. That is all I have to say.

Think about what you are saying and who it will effect before making a post in a public forum.

QUOTE (Sammy @ Feb 4 2005, 08:04 AM)
Jeff, most if not all of the negative posts towards our little green friend came after he posted that some of us should F-off and after he posted an order for Mikey to "change his stupid avitar", basically he asked for it. Like I tell the people working for me at what I sometimes call my day-care center for adults, how you say it is as important as what you say.

If he posted that the avitars are a little over the top and that he had a problem with them, or if her PMed mikey and asked if he could tone it down a little, he prolly would have gotten a less harsh reaction.

Anywho, it's all resolved now and water under the bridge, now it's all about silly posts and wasting electrons.

Well....duhh.....

If you knew me PERSONALLY....you would find that I am a fun loving family oriented 914 guy that also likes other Porsches (cept watered ones) and has a cutting sense of humor....I hate Howard Stern, so I am not of that ilk....but I like to laugh....but no one TELLS me what to do.....especially some 65 post newbie.

Ask me nice I will play nice....I took a lot of bashing with a sense of humor....I will NOT tolerate much more of it though....I recycle my avatars faster than most people change their socks.....don't like them? Turn them off.....or wait a bit and they will change....

Quite frankly there have been FAR worse posted...mine are milk toast compared to some that have graced these pages.

Posted by: Joe Ricard Feb 4 2005, 10:33 AM

So who thinks Mike should have all his Avatars painted on the President of the home owners association Garage door?
Ohhh Maybe it IS Kermits house. He was just here to harrass Mike.

Posted by: skline Feb 4 2005, 10:43 AM

Think of this as a shared club garage, each with his or hers own little section. Mikes section has some questionable material hanging on the wall. Mine has had some very questionable stuff on the wall, way more questionable than the one he had posted at the time. Someone asked me to change it and I did. I dont want to cause problems for people in here no more than anyone else. I like to feel welcome here just as much as the other guy. But I do feel that it is my right to hang what I want on the walls. I take a lot of crap here like most of the long time posters do, you just roll with it. Its all in fun. Slits, Howard, MikeZ, they are all friends of mine and we actually talk like that in person to each other. We know its all in fun. Oh Aaron too, he rolls well biggrin.gif. Its all about having fun and sharing a common interest. Lets all just play nice and have some fun, isnt that what its all about? I have met so many people that are on here by going to events and chatting on here. Everyone is welcome no matter what you may think is acceptable. Now, lets all meet up this weekend and drive!! driving.gif

QUOTE (Cloudbuster @ Feb 4 2005, 08:29 AM)
I like seeing avatars, I don't want to have to turn them off because 1 or 2 people feel the need to express themselves more, er, graphically. Avatars provide a non-verbal, (subconscious?) expression of the members that isn't present in text.

I like boobies and the female figure, clad, and otherwise. I can appreciate SpecialK's and Levi's avatars.
Usually I can ignore the avatars. But, the 'stupid avatar' in question was a moving GIF which attracts attention from miles (not Redshift) away. I'm fortunate that I can surf at work, but having a moving 'look at me!' avatar, makes 914Club-bing as little stressful.

It's a garage, but whose garage? Isn't it everybody's garage? Is ownership really determined by the total number of posts whether useful or not? There were a number of people supporting Mike's choice of avatars, but they didn't choose to decorate this garage the same way Mike does.

Yes, the situation was handled wrongly in many ways.

One response was that if Kermit had more posts, he'd KNOW what this place is like. I find that invalid. It seems the onus of responsibility rests upon the long-time, high-post members. Through countless hours of lurking and many thousands of posts, an old timer gets KNOW what will offend, or set off fellow old-timers and newbies alike. Newbies, unfamiliar with the 'family' should be handled with extra measure of grace -- or condescension, whichever suits you. An old-timer who is aware of quirks, foibles and the median level of behavior within the garage/forum, yet chooses to exceed them is tantamount to being a troll.

Ah bullshit.....the reason THIS site was founded....was to get away from censorship and to be a vendor neutral site. Pelican parts BBS was getting tight assed so we all bolted over here....rennlist had an east coast monitor that didn't appreciate ANY bashing of his bill paying list sponsors.....

So.....here we are......

NOW FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED.....DON't LIKE THE AVATARS, TURN THEM OFF.....

Posted by: Howard Feb 4 2005, 10:49 AM

This is just what that maniac wants: More press. You guys are only encouraging him to be more outrageous. Keep up the good work smilie_pokal.gif

And to plug WCC yet again..

Mike will be the MC for the BBQ. All material submitted in this or the avatar post can and will be used against you at that event beerchug.gif

Posted by: skline Feb 4 2005, 10:54 AM

On another note,

This Community of 914 owners is actually beneficial to the members. We get together and HELP each other with our cars. Ask DrifterJay, Aaron, MattR or me. Many times, I needed help with something, Mike, Slits, and many other members have come through for me and I give back in return. Aaron is coming over today to weld up his car, I have the space, the tools and the welder to get his car repaired. Its not really the cars, its the people as well. We always have a good time. Twisted1 is a new and welcomed member to out little circle also, he will be a great asset and we are growing all the time. Grow with us and lets have some fun!!!

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Feb 4 2005, 11:05 AM

I decided not to post in the major event, but read along and laughed, then shook my head. It was handled poorly on both sides of the coin. sad.gif

Howard's a great guy who's excited about Porsches and would (and by all looks of it, still will) be a great contributor to this board. Who cares how many posts he has? If posts earn one the right to anything around here, then I better quit now -- I'll never catch up with you guys! laugh.gif

But why do we keep fighting about this? For the "right" of five or six people to post stuff they wouldn't be able to on almost any board? headbang.gif headbang.gif headbang.gif

Let me get this straight: Politics are (rightly) off limits but pornography isn't... Both issues raise nasty disputes, so let's get rid of 'em. And discarding these two doesn't mean we can't still keep the "family" feel and great OT posts, too.

I agree, the issue is more "a little over the top" than some huge, terrible offense. So I turn off my avatars and deal with it. But why should I have to? Mikez, I'm not mad at you nor will I single you out -- which is why I didn't contribute to the BIG thread. I may disagree with you, but I suspect I would like you quite a bit were I to (or whenever I do) meet you.

I like the name "garage," but this is still a very different thing than a garage. The written word is very different than the spoken one. Perhaps why things got so out of hand.

Is this THAT big a deal to me? Probably not, but it obviously is to others -- and possibly some great contributors.

The fighting makes the answer clear to me...

I have to agree with Andy on this point. Kermit got it after a few posts, but others continued to push the issue.

QUOTE

Mark is a realy nice guy that I have had the pleasure to meet in person. But, I dissagree with the concept that seems to be in this statement. The needs of the few do not out weigh the needs of the many. If there is a majority of people that wish things changed, then it would be concievable that change would be inevitable. However, if the majority is unmolested by the current issue then the minority have the coice to stay and accept this reality as it exists or do leave and start their own faction.
Coming to a place where it is accepted to behave a certain way and then to complain about the parts of that behavior that you don't like is like complaining that you want to keep smoking, but you want a healthy cigarette. Or, like going to a strip club and complaining about the naked women. This garage has a real life, imperfect existance that requires a little research to understand. Thus, coming and demanding change, then insulting those involved is illogical.

Both sides could have handled it better (MZ did well, I think), first impressions are a bitch, but I sincerely hope that Howard Y becomes a part of this forum. After what he said initially, he showed that he got it and eventually showed grace (IMHO).

Originally, I didn't like this place because all I saw was dick and ass jokes and it seemed like everyones repressed personalities from the bird board were slingshotting out. Later I found this place to be much more interesting, fun, yes the word is FUN to be at. I accept the good and the bad.

If you have to turn off your avatars because you are offended by some things that the majority considers acceptable, consider that the price of admission. If you dissagree then I bet that the admins will refund your club dues ($0).

(I respect everyones oppinion, even if I do not agree, and if I offended anyone in my post, it was unintentional)

Deffinetly a good argument, Andy. But, if when the opportunity presents itself, if those whom take acception to a given topic do not present their oppinion say nothing, then they have no leg to stand on. If you don't vote, you cant complain kinda thing. I am taking into account that the vocal majority are very vocal, but even if you cut their responses by 75% they still out compete the minority. IMHO.

I do like how the admins largely remain un biased. We are lucky.

Maybe we should post a serious pole about offensiveness? I am more curious about the results then any pending actions.

Well Pete:

I guess my point is this....I respect everyones right to exist, post on the board and contribute...whteher they are 1 post newbies or seasoned and smelly vets like SLITS......

But......I guess I will use a little story......

New guy goes into a bar,,,,,,sign out side says everyone welcome, "X" is the theme......New guys says...Hey I know a LOT of Stuff about "X".....he goes in and tells all the old farts all the stuff he knows.....he gets his ass pounded.......

Next new guy...same thing....except HE goes in and listens....gets to know people, develop relationships based on mutual respect, trust and level of skill......

Guess who is the one "I" respect, will listen to and work with?

After about the 3 page, it wasn't about Zits avatars; it was about how badly we friends could bash each other and come away laughing...even Kermit got it at the end.

To me, there is no reason to delete a thread...it's just all garage/bar banter...even if one or two get serious with a Fuck Off, the others can still have fun with it.

Slits is an asshole.....................and doesn't get excited about nonsensical bullshit...which this all is anyway. If you want to mentally masturbate all over the page and get hostile....go for it!

I knew you'd have a field day when I typed that, Miles.

So, it's a good thing that I don't give a -expletive deleted- what you think.

Daaaaaaamn, Rusty does have a sense of humor laugh.gif

BTW, the disk will be on it's way today via the Pony Express.

How far can we get this thread on a friday afternoon? As fast as the board is rolling this afternoon it is obvious nobody is working. They should just send me home because of lack of interest

Gentlemen, gentlemen, lets all ask ourselves the real question here.....

Pepsi or Coke?

I AM not afraid to admit this, I LIKE tdgray's avatar!!!

on a more serious note....

How about adding a Note or a pop-up box when someone new signs up on our site here.
This note would tell them more about Avatars, not only how to set one up for themselves, but also tell them that some Members have adult content in their avatar, and thus the New Member might want to keep that in mind if they choose to surf at work (which is pretty much all of us, right?)

Mikey Z is alright by me, he's a 914 enthusiast, a dog owner and he likes women, he can't be That bad!

BTW: last nite, 2/3/05 I DROVE my 914 for the 1st time since Oct 21st, 2004 (i bought a 90 VW Jetta on Oct 22nd)

Wow! are our cars small or what? lol2.gif lol2.gif
