914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Club Badges - Design finalized, sign up here for yours
Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 11 2015, 10:48 AM
For those of you that have been awaiting the club badges I apologize. I had hoped this endeavor would be simple process. So far it's been like herding cats.
So,
I'm putting a call out to submit (or resubmit ) all designs as well as having this open to new designs.
Here's the guidelines -
1-All artwork must be your final design.
2-All artwork submitted can be modified to the extent possible to create it. This means that if you have hairlines that are less than 1/16" of an inch may need to increased or modified to keep as true to the design (in our interpretation ) as possible.
3-The usable are is 3" Dia. for the artwork.
4-The background can be silver or gold (gold is $2.50 more).
5- All artwork must be your own. No cutting and pasting, as long as you are creating it, you may be inspired by some elements.
6- All submissions are at the discretion of the of the admins.
7- Again, all artwork is your final complete design. Please submit here in a jpeg so all can see.
8- Artwork selected may be used by World (or its designees ) at Worlds discretion, and rights are transferred to World.
Have fun and let your creativity flow !

Final Design:

Since we've already gone through 2+ months of this to get to the voting point. Wouldn't it just be easiest to eliminate the "issue" designs and stick with the votes we have to move forward rather than start all over, or have a revote without the problematic ones included ? Take the winning designs and THEN get the proper format of the design

I would like to get this wrapped up too. It would be easiest to just move to the next. I'm hoping that we may see a few new (and maybe better) designs pop up.
We had worked out the last one and I thought we were ready to go to production, ad the issue of scaling the car differently came up, while I agree, it's not fair to keep changing a design that was voted on.
There was also some issues of IP that I wanted to make clear, so by resubmitting, there are no questions.

Idea of how detail degrades with smaller lines.
This is the 10 city badge and pushes the edge of what looks right.

Black and gold #2 circle. Also the horse makes me think Ferrari. #1 top would be a cool window stick on too

I'm not a fan of mixed fonts. Why use a different front for "914 World" and for "est. 2006"?
{the horseless ones look better, too}

I don't think the windshield will translate well to the medium we are using, but looks good.

Except on a black grill it might not stand out much.

I too like the design, BUT am I the only one that thinks the black car kind of disappears with the black background ? Maybe either use the white background, or try changing the cars color to orange or red and leave the black background

Font can be changed. So can colors. Andy just pick or design what you want and have it made. Forget this contest business. Obviously everyone has a different opinion.
Just use the design from the sticker.

I'm sure the Font could be changed to Reflect the "World" better.
I think it should read Member not 2006 on the bottom
and I like the way the black car fades into the badge, Since we don't have the Use of the old silhouette, It becomes more of a detailed outline in my view.

Ditto on the car makes clutter. We know what the car looks like and it's bolted to ... Wait for it ... A 914. Ditch the car. IMHO

Andy you should pick a few people, maybe admins to help design the badge you want, it's your website. Putting it out to everyone just doesn't seem to work, too many ideas, then asshats pulling their designs because their creative panties are in a bunch. Your right what a cluster f#€k. I say design what you want, keep the petty people out of it.
Sad when one person decides to screw things up for the group, obviously not a team player.....have a history of not making friends

i think I am going to back off in making any more revisions. There are just too many opinions and comments to make this a productive endeavor.
I can change the font, change the color, lose the car graphic, etc...and there will still be more comments in what seems like a never ending teeth pulling session.
Again my vote would be for Andy and the admins to come up with an idea/design- font, colors, whatever...have somebody digitize it and Mikey can make them...no voting, no more comments from the peanut gallery.
It seems there are no other contributors; probably cause it's a losing battle.

I agree. Let one person lead it. Get the opinions of a couple key people (admins) and produce it. Everyone will love it.

Or, if you like I will have my graphic artist come up with 3 or 4 designs. Then put them up for a simple vote. Then Mark can produce it. If it is just one artist it cuts down on a lot of stuff. And I'll pay him. So he has no ego to chase with free work. I'll donate the design to 914world and never use it for anything. So ownership isn't an issue. When we have him do a design he always gives us a few designs to choose from anyway. Then we tweak them.
Just an idea.

Sounds like a great idea
except for the voting part...you need a committee to decide, not the whole dysfunctional group
And maybe do it all by email privately, then just announce the end result.
Will keep the process uncluttered with junk.

Ok, my last submission. Best for last possibly.... I started it so i wanted to finish the idea. Final submission design to be used for the 914World badge. I can offer other products like pins, stickers, mugs, t shirts...if approved of course (don't want to get Rusty too shaken up )
The preferred font, one color black on gold, timeline, new red car silhouette, pebble grain black background.
With gear and Member script
Without gear, with Member
With gear, without Member...maybe Members can get their own engraving

All I want is a badge fro the club, something we all like. We may not be 100% in agreement, but should represent us. I had really hoped it sould be would be a straight forward endeavor, the issue with the last badge was the artwork, and potential modifications that could be made after that significantly change the look of the badge.
This is the reason we had to start over. I realize this lost a lot of momentum, but I really don't care who does it, as long as we all get something we like.

How many members do you really think will refuse to buy a badge because of the font or because the black car fades into the background or the way the axis of the Earth is skewed or it won't stand out enough? Are you kidding?

I agree. With the window there alone, it is out of place. Sillouettes of the 914 are hard (I have been trying to do them (often unsuccessfully) for almost 30 years). But, I think it is a lot better without the window.
I haven't paid much attention to the badge designs until the past couple of days. Maybe I can make some fresh comments:
I really like this design (post #36), 7TPorsh. Great work. One of the best I have seen. I like the gear, and with the word - MEMBER - inside the car. I think you should consider making the Est., all caps - EST. Also lower case fonts won't translate well when the thing is printed, etc. Finally, I think the order of the years is odd. If you want it to go up, down, up, down, then the - 1970 - needs to be moved up so it can start the sequence. Right now it looks like 1971 starts it. If you switch it to no up down, then - 1970 - still needs to be moved up. Either way, 1970 needs to start it out, and be on the top line.
BTW - great integration of the globe. It magically just flows in and becomes the defining element of that inner circle. Great job.
Just my .02

Great idea.
I would try taking the roof off, AND remove the lower horizontal line that is the top of the door. Just let the two lines sorta disappear as they move down. Or make the horizontal line longer so it extends to the front fender and back so it defines the top of the quarter panel under the sail panel. That may be the best idea, and not include the roof so the targa is accentuated. Also, the lines are going to be red?
I know my edits are crude. They are just for illustration. But, here is what I am trying to say above with respect to the car.

I don't think the black and gold looks bad (I don't like the red). But good designs should be done without regard for color initially anyway. Then they will look good in any reasonable color (i.e., Nke, Apple, McDonalds logos). Also the colors should really be worked out with the manufacturer. They will have a limited number of colors available and will know which ones work best in that medium. I trust Mark will get the final colors right. As an aside, I would think that we would not want it to be tied to any specific 914 color schemes, per se. Too restricting.
Posted by: 914bub Jan 23 2015, 08:02 PM
Not trying to be a jerk but now we're back to nit picking colors, lines, fonts etc. JUST like in the first thread. I even agree with some of the compliments/criticisms but at some point we need to get this project "off jack stands" and move forward. I agree with the previous poster who said SirAndy and the admins need to just pick a design and run with it. We're all looking forward to these and I don't think a minor detail that someone isn't fond of will deter a purchase.
You can please some of the people all the time...... Just not this time

You know, I think we have got to give this guy 7TPorsh a lot of credit for sticking in there and tweaking this thing with all the nit picking.
The process is painful, but I think it is getting better and better.
And as much as we all want a vote, it is Sr. Andy's baby, so when he is happy we will get it done.
How about black and pewter like a German Stein with red and gold highlights?

I'd add that the black, red and gold (or yellow as the case may be) references the colors of the German flag. The current iteration is the best yet.

Why 2006 when the bottom of this page and others say 2002.
It would be nice to see it in silver, if this does end up in a vote.
As previously stated, what ever is made will be purchased.
And I also commend 7T for his willingness to try everyone's suggestions.
Posted by: Dave_Darling Jan 23 2015, 09:38 PM
I believe 2006 is when 914world.com came into being.
Before that, this was 914club.com . Then there was "The Split", and eventual sale of the latter to George at AA. I think 914club was formed in '02.

I agree. It is a pretty good design. I hadn't considered the colors of the flag. But if you want to represent the flag I really think you have to use the red more heavily, which I wouldn't recommend. Trying to balance the three flag colors in this design (which wasn't designed to be three primary colors from the outset, I don't think) will really complicate it unnecessarily. It's pretty clean right now. I'd try switching the car lines to black, or some other natural color (white, gray, silver, gold, etc.) for consistency, and then Andy and Mark should just run with choosing the best colors with the manufacturer on their own. I am sure it will turn out wonderfully. And we will all be proud to have it. We could argue over coloring for months. And all of our monitors are showing us each different colors, anyway.

I believe 2006 is when 914world.com came into being.
Before that, this was 914club.com . Then there was "The Split", and eventual sale of the latter to George at AA. I think 914club was formed in '02.

Simple, clean design with the right mix of colors. Personally, I would remove the years 70 - 76 since I don't see the need for them but I'm cool with it either way.
Great job!

Interesting, I like it because it doesn't say member nor does it have the Est. 2006. Personal opinion, less is more. Like I said, I'm in regardless.

I'm with budk. If you buy one, there is a 99.99 % chance your a member here. Redundant! I also think the individual years made clutters the design and detracts from the clean, simple lines (kinda like a 914). Info not needed.

914World should be together but other than that, this is by far the best...clean, simple and gives the essence of the 914's shape.
Edit: I meant the image with the full shape at the bottom of the globe and the colors wrapped inside the latitudes.

I think this design has the same issue as the first .car doesn't look right.wheelbase is too long.
Also personally I don't like the flag reference becuse this is a world club. Just a German car.

This is getting tiring. We can go on and on for years about who likes what and who doesn't. Opinions and assholes. The simple fact is that there will never be ONE design that EVERYONE is in love with, hence the poll option. Majority rules. If someone wants to get their panties in a wad because it does or doesn't have "member", it does or doesn't have the dates, then those someones can simply not buy a badge and have their own perfect design made. After all, we're all men here !!
I'm about to go pull out my Club badges
Actually, after some thought. How about dropping "Member " and changing it to " We're all men here "

Sticking my oar in:
The 914 silhouette on this one is too busy. Simplify it (maybe get rid of the mirror, maybe get rid of the triangle window?) and it should work a little better. And might be easier to produce?

Posted by: Cuda911 Jan 24 2015, 09:08 PM
As long as this is still open to comments, I have two:
1) Why does the hood have an up-turn in the last section of it? Was it supposed to look like the headlights in the up position? If so, it doesn't.
2) The reason why the ones with the numbers embedded into the silhouette is much better than the plain silhouette is that the numbers break up that large black chunk beneath the car. Otherwise, the car shape is completely lost amongst all that black.
As others have stated, though, the design with the full silhouette has a silhouette that is not of the right proportions. Can't you just take a side profile photograph and trace that, then shrink it down, to get the right proportions?

I like this latest design best as well but the 914 looks like it has a little too much "nose down" attitude. Can it be leveled a bit?

QUOTE(poorsche914 @ Jan 24 2015, 09:30 PM)
Look at the silhouette of your 914... the sloping down is the hoodline. The "up-turn" is the fender section that extends out to the turn signals.
The full silhouette was ever-so-slightly elongated... probably happened during a resize
Good eye, people
OK, I see what you mean when I study the car from a straight sideways profile. Although technically it is the correct silhouette, my brain tends to follow the fender line for the profile, so the mental image I get is much closer to the profile line used in the red outline below.

The Admins are deliberating on which badge is going to be used. It will be a design that is 1) already on the table 2) will not be changed once a final decision is reached.
We will try and have a decision out by the end of the day today.
Thanks

We listened to you folks when it was suggested (by several of you) that the admins just get together and pick a design so that we can go forward with production.
Our expectation is that Mikey914 will continue with the badge production once a design is decided.
We have had a poll going on since the evening of the 25th and the following design was the clear winner among the admins.
So here it is, your new badge:

The ends of the cars should show. Your silhouette is nice but you're not showing it in the badge. Back to the tow truck look again. If not, maybe add the mirror and steering wheel in; doesn't look like a car. Also might as well finish (add) in the middle line for the globe...some should still show on the left side.

I know this is very late in the game to be asking this, but will the badge be able to fit the side grille like the old 914 club badge? Looks like it would have to be about 80mm or less in diameter.

I think they may be a touch too wide to fit on the side, but I will check the fit late tomorrow. As far as customizing and adding member numbers, there's not much I can do from a production side. It's a good idea, but I'm not sure where the number would go?

Gotta fit into the sides....? Adding member number could be easily done by creating a blank area long enough to accommodate a 5 digit number; then supply a stick on number sheet with each order. You would only have to select the relevant numbers and attaché them to the blank line. Presto. This would make each badge a little more personal; and allow those making 914 sightings to use for finding whether a cars owner is a member.

QUOTE(Mikey914 @ Feb 18 2015, 12:14 AM)
Thanks Jim,
I understand what you are asking for and it is an interesting prospect. However, I'm working from world sanctioned artwork and I can't really make changes to the design.
I didn't get it, I hope tomorrow.

QUOTE(Mikey914 @ Jan 11 2015, 08:48 AM)

Mark,
If you have one that is not claimed, I'd like to have it.
I sent an email to Blake yesterday and asked him to add the badge (914WB) and the TPS board (914TPS1.7E) to order 4887, which is pending. Haven't heard back from yet.
Thanks
Olin

Ready to start shipping out today!
Go to the listing, use a fictions address select print and call for payment. Note your correct address and I can send you a correct invoice via Paypal. Our international seems to way overcharge, this way I can make sure you don't pay more than you should.

Order placed and sent you an email through here with all the details. Thanks

If you didn't order off the site, my assistant will not know to look for it. It helps him keep everything organized. Drop me a PM with you email I call look it up and make sure it goes out.
Otherwise its easy to overlook.
Thanks

Dale, I actually need your email address to forward an invoice. The PM system will not have it on the communication.
I'll double check, but I think that's all I was waiting for.

Thanks for being patient Mark. I guess I jumped too fast when I ordered my badges. We should be straight now thanks for doing the badges.

Had to place a second order awhile back to accommodate the additional badges needed. The cost did go up, but I'm holding the price on these until after the weekend, so if you want them now is the time after the 10th they will be in inventory and will be $21 each.
