914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Hershey Spring Fling Drive/Rally & Friday Evening Dinner

Posted by: stevegm Jan 13 2015, 11:09 PM

EVENT DETAILS:
WHAT: Spring Fling Fun Drive (an afternoon in the covered-bridge country of PA)
WHERE: Starts at 1 pm at the AACA Museum (http://www.aacamuseum.org) - AACA Museum, 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, PA 17033
WHEN: Starts at 1pm, Friday, April 17, 2015. Ends at approximately 6:00 pm at: Funcks Restaurant (http://www.funcks.com), 664 W Main St, Palmyra, PA 17078

___

EVENT SHIRTS:
We are doing the event t-shirts to order (i.e., we are only ordering the specific number of shirts prepurchased). We will deliver them at the drive/dinner on Friday in Hershey. If you are not going to the drive/dinner we will be at the swap meet on Saturday. Or we can mail it to you (please include an additional $5.00 if you want it mailed).

We will take t-shirt order until Monday, April 6, 2015. Then we will close the group buy and order them.

To order a shirt please send paypal to - savethe914@gmail.com
$15.00. Please specify that it is for a Mid-Engine Invasion t-shirt, as well as your 914world screen name, full name, and size (S, M, L, XL, or XXL). NOTE: These shirts seem to run a little small. Please take that into account when choosing your size.

___

The Mid-Engine Invasion VII is right around the corner. The Spring Fling Fun Drive will be an afternoon drive/rally starting at the AACA Museum (http://www.aacamuseum.org) at 1 pm (there is a great Lotus exhibit at the museum that you can visit in the morning). We will spend the afternoon driving some of the most beautiful roads in the region.

The route includes scenic driving roads, covered bridges, sightseeing, and some great stops along the way with games and a couple contests to see who the 914 experts are; not to mention an afternoon and evening with great 914 friends. The drive will end at Funck's Restaruant for wings and more fun (http://www.funcks.com).

Sponsor donations are welcome. We want everyone included in the drive. Drive, push, pull, trailer your 914. And if your building a car to take to Hershey, post about it here. We'd love to hear about it. No 914? Join us anyway. It's about the people. The cars are just the glue.

Making room reservation in the morning. I will have Brad Mayeur with me. We would be looking for two open seats to ride along with since I will have the big truck & trailer setup? If needed I guess I could unhook the trailer and take the truck, but would much rather ride along in a 914 PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pray.gif

I'm sure there will be room with somebody. I am not sure what car I'm bringing. Restoration is going slower than expected (as if I should be surprised). But I might have room.

I will be attending, based on the weather! If we still have salt/brine on the roads then teener stays in the garage til a few good days of rain to wash it away. Have to liase with Chris Foley from Tangerine Racing as he needs to tweak the D-Jet a bit. Dr Evil, my tranny works great and it is nice to know all is well inside, had a really good time at your clinic.

Traditionally, everybody goes to Underdogs , in Harrisburg, for dinner Friday night. I was working on reservations. Apparently, due to a fire, Underdogs is closed. I'm working on finding a different place. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

We need a head count for the restaurant, shirts, etc. if you can post this info it will help (I don't want to open another thread just to do a poll):

1. Doing the Friday drive?
2. Number of people for dinner?
3. Shirt size(s)

I'll be there. Probably in one of those front engine water cooled 914's unsure.gif

I have invited Steve Limbert to dinner Friday night. He owns Air-Cooled Racing (http://aircooledracing.com) in Wellsville, PA. He also owns the 1st 914 brought into the US, as well as the 1st 914-6 GT. I also hope John Forbes, from Black Forest Racing (http://blackforestracing.com), will join us for dinner. Between the two of them, the racing stories should be great.

That's awesome. I'm staying for dinner. Steve is a great guy. His shop is tucked out of the way but he does some neat stuff there. Last time I was there he showed me his 914-6 tucked away for a future resto. He also makes some cool parts for our cars.

Count me in - been wanting to join you guys for the last few years - been making to the swap meet but not for the festivities.

Should be in be my '73(2056, carbs) , but if not I'll bring the '84 Carrera, perhaps both if my son(s) tag along for the Friday events or just come up Saturday.

Obviously my plans are up in the air, but for now please put me down for a L and M shirt and two for dinner.

Speaking of which the Appalachian Brewing Company or Troegs are always good if you are still looking for an alternative to Underdogs

Looking forward to the fun!

Silver Dollar Saloon over at the bowling alley, Len.

I see our only problem is our numbers. The one year I booked us the conference room at the Silver Dollar and we had them cater. It was nice. Since then, no one has really taken over the lead. One tried...we ended up at Red Robin. Places will be packed. ABC will be packed, no idea about Troegs as they were set up after I moved. It looks small from the outside, but it is off the beaten track compared to all of the other places. There is the Grand China Buffet down from Underdogs wink.gif

I don't mind taking the lead and handling the details. But, I would like a little feedback on what everyone wants. So that I make sure we set something up that meets your expectations. As I see it we have three options:

1. Go to a restaurant similar to Underdogs and use their general dining room/bar. Everyone orders their own food/drinks.
2. Go to a general restaurant and use a room that is separate from the regular dining room. Everyone orders their own food/drinks. Probably a better choice then #1.
3. Find a separate room and cater it. This would require that each person pitch a little in on food and drinks.

What is your preference?

That's it Evil, you're right.

1 or 2 seems fine to me.

Was thinking about that place near the hotel because it's walking distance, at least for the people who are staying there and want to have a few drinks. Are most people who are going on the rally staying at the hotel?

Not sure if Jeff is coming up with me or not so...
1. Have reservations about er... at Knights Inn....
2. Hope to be there in time for the afternoon drive. Really wanted to do the museum too, but didn't want 3 nights @ the Knights....
3. Size 2XL on the shirt, or "Phat Daddy" or however the sizes run....
4. At least 1 for dinner. As long as the food ain't spoiled, the beers cold and the dishes are relatively clean, I'm in....

Thanks for your efforts setting this all UP!

Am making "914" out of painters tape to stick on whatever I drive up, so I won't stand out on the Friday drive. That'll work, right? beer3.gif

Thanks for taking the lead Steve. I am cool with whatever the group decides. I've been in Troegs. They have a separate room off to the side that would be enough space for our group.

There are two problems I see with Troegs:

1. Parking - their lot is small. However, there is a strip mall next door - I just parked there and walked over.

Putting it up on jack stands in the parking lot would work also,.. biggrin.gif

I'm just going to hang out ion the SHEETZ parking lot with a Shmurger, a bag of Smhries and a case of Coors light to ply Eric with. Whoever wants to hang out come on by rolleyes.gif

If we are talking Saturday night, pizza in the Inn parking lot. Maybe get Don to bring Ribs.

If Friday, Hoffbrauhaus is pretty awesome, and they can handle the crowd post drive. But it is a good 40 minutes away from Hershey - keep in mind of drinking...

We are less than a month out. If you haven't indicated whether you are coming to the Friday afternoon drive, and/or dinner Friday evening, please post here so we can get a head count.

Where is dinner Friday night? Troegs?

Posted by: wilchek Mar 22 2015, 07:40 PM

I have been to Troegs a couple of times. It is good food and a good atmosphere. Parking lot sucks but they have guys there that may be able to help if you are getting the reserved room. If you buy a room they may reserve some parking. If you don't get a room they have big family style tables and a lot of standing areas. If you get there by 445-5 ish you should be able to get something. If you dont want to pay for a room there is a public eating area off the walking tour that you should be able to get and that would work. Most people don't hang there because it is away from the main seating area and has a fair amount of space with tables that can be combined. Food is counter service. It is listed as a snack bar but is a full menu. Most likely some Pennsylvania law issue. Recommend the brisket sandwich and popcorn with mad elf or troegenator.

We are trying to nail this down. Accommodating 40 or 50 people (which seems like the number) isn't easy for restaurants, apparently. We have spoken with at least 8 or 10, and haven't found many that can do it.

I think this is the best choice - http://www.funcks.com/

And it is only 1.7 miles from the Knights Inn.

Due to the weather in Atlantic Canada this winter which has broken all kinds of records, the teener won't be on the road til early May and only if all the road salt is washed away by a few good days of rain. I agree with r_towle. If there is a tradition it should be kept.

The Spring Fling name was really just for the Friday drive. I think the drive was called the Gettysburg Fun Run last time? It wasn't our intention to change the name of the event. In fact, I didn't even know about the Mid-Engine Invasion until after we chose this name for the drive. None-the-less, I went through the old threads and it looks like the event was really cool. I think we should keep the name for the invasion in general. If it is agreeable, I'd like to add the mid engine invasion to the shirt, and make it more clear that the Spring Fling is just the Friday drive (a small part of what is going on over the weekend).

I agree Mark. It is a little too racey (for a fun run). But, you get going down a path with a design and unless you start over completely, it is hard to change directions. I considered deleting the driver entirely. I don't like him :-) Suggestions?

I have suggested that, since the overall weekend event was called the Mid-Engine Invasion, we move the - Spring Fling logo down to the bottom and make it smaller. Then put - Mid-Engine Invasion across the top (the Spring Fling is just the Friday drive). I think we need to keep the Mid-Engine Invasion name for the overall weekend event, since there is a tradition there. And, it is a cool name. :-)

Agree with adding Mid-Engine Invasion and deleting the driver - don't think he does much for the design and pulls attention away from the car. My two cents worth...

And now for my four cents worth - I'm not a fan of front design t-shirts. Most of the sailing regattas I race in do design on back and a small logo on the chest pocket area which I like as both front and back have some print. Perhaps move the logo to the back and a small 914 World logo on the chest?

However, you'll never please everyone, and I'll wear it even in current design.

BTW, how are we paying for these? In advance, in person?

Mid Engine Invasion sounds right and it is important to stick with tradition. It looks like a group of six of us from Massachusetts will be arriving too late for the drive, and will try to hook up for a beer later.

Just me and a 914. Then going to Michigan and getting on an aero plane thingy.

Bring them stateside and go to a usps location and grab a medium flat rate box. They'll ship for around $13.00 and be at our shop before I get there. wink.gif beerchug.gif

OK gents, we have our route for the drive. driving.gif I'm looking quite forward to this weekend...it's been a long winter.

After leaving the museum, we will head directly to Hoss's Steak & Sea House for lunch. After a bit of highway driving, we shoot off onto the back roads of South Central Pennsylvania down to Route 30. Then we roll on to the Lancaster area to drive across four covered bridges. Finally, we meet the rest of 914world for dinner at Funcks Restaurant by 6PM.

According to Google maps, the drive is 109.6 miles and has a driving time of 2 hr, 43 minutes.

Notes:

1. We will do our best to stay together, but bear in mind we will be traveling through some small towns and things can happen.

2. Drive with caution - We will be in Amish Country for part of the trip. It's quite possible we may encounter a horse & buggy or two on the roads.

3. Please use the links provided below to print directions directly from Google Maps.

4. I recommend having a GPS with you. I drove the route yesterday. I used the printed directions until checkpoint #2, then switched over to GPS. (if you use GPS to get to checkpoint #2, you will miss out on the scenic, twisty back roads).

5. Only one covered bridge has any type of pull-off near it - the first one, before crossing on the right side. We will attempt to stop there for pictures. Besides that, photo opportunities may be limited to passengers while we drive this section.

6. There are three checkpoints built into the trip in case anyone gets lost. If you lose the pack, set your GPS to the next checkpoint and we will meet you there.

Checkpoint 1 - Hoss's Steak & Sea House, 9009 Bridge Rd, Hummelstown, PA
Checkpoint 2 - Franklintown Community Fire Company #65, Fire House St, Franklintown, PA.
Checkpoint 3 - Emigs 81 Diner, 7620 E. King St, Abbottstown, PA. This road goes by three different names. If your GPS doesn't find E. King St, try US 30 East or Lincoln Highway. E. King Street was the one that worked in my Tom Tom.

If we get separated after checkpoint #3, here are addresses that will get you to the covered bridges:

Bridge 1: 872 Bridge Valley Rd, West Hempfield, PA (if your GPS doesn't recognize West Hempfield, try Mt. Joy).

Bridge 2: 4193 Siegrest Rd, Mt. Joy, PA

Bridge 3: 700 S Erosman Rd, Manheim, PA

Bridge 4: 825 W Sun Hill Rd, Manheim, PA

Our final destination is Funcks Restaurant, 664 W Main St, Palmyra, PA.

We need to be back at Funcks by 6PM to have our best chance of sitting with the rest of the 914world members in town.

Man.....its been like 10+ yrs since I did a valve adjust on a /4. I actually have to read the manual and I used to be able to do it blind and drunk. I feel old.

Shifter further adjusted, one air leak fixed, heat flapper hooked up, valve covers off and awaiting adjustment (feel loose).

I think installing my rain tray may be a good idea given how previous years have been at times.

Looking forward to the drive.

I called Steve Limbert of Aircooled Racing this morning to invite him on the drive. He's tied up getting ready for Hershey. He may be able to meet us for dinner though.

Steve Limbert from Air Cooled Racing will be joining us for dinner at Funcks. I had originally invited both he and John Forbes so we could swap racing stories. But, John can't make it. Steve owns the first 914 imported in the U.S. I believe, as well as the first 914-6 GT. It should be fun.

6 of us will be attending the dinner at Funks.

wndsnd and wife
Gandalf and wife
R_towle and son.

We are heading down friday morning, probably stop in and visit Foley....then a few other stops along the way....but we should be at the dinner.

Finally worked things out so I plan on joining everyone for dinner as well but will be coming in by myself. Booked a room at the Knight's Inn just yesterday.

I'll try to get to the restaurant about 6:00 to help hold the fort since I won't make it up in time for the drive.

Posted by: pvollma Apr 15 2015, 10:28 AM

When I signed up for the tour, I didn't think the wife and I could make the dinner, but now we can, so that's two more for dinner.

Posted by: MMW Apr 15 2015, 11:17 AM

My son & I should get to Hershey about 1pm & plan on going to the museum then over to Funcks. Staying at Knights inn also.

Posted by: stevegm Apr 15 2015, 11:35 AM

I am happy to see so many people coming to dinner Friday evening. Everyone is welcome. It will be a lot of fun. If you aren't going on the drive in the afternoon, you might want to try to get to the restaurant around 6 pm when we arrive back from the drive.

The restaurant says they have plenty of room for us all (I told them we would have 40 or 50 people). But, they did stress that the closer to 6 pm that we arrive, the better it is for sitting us all together. As it approaches 7 pm and on, they said it will become increasingly difficult to seat us together if we aren't already there. They have a live band at 9 pm, and apparently it gets busy leading up to that.

Posted by: ejm Apr 15 2015, 04:35 PM

I'll be at Funcks for dinner Friday and will staying at the Knights.

Thanks. I think they came out nice. I have about 15 or 20 extras if anyone wants one that didn't order. It didn't make sense to order less than 40 or 48. So, I took the chance. I suspect a few people there will need one. If you PM me, NOTE: I think this brand shirt runs a little small. Or, it might be me running a little large. idk. Just something to keep in mind in choosing your size.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Mid-Engine Invasion events in Hershey this past weekend possible. It was a great weekend, and the 914 camaraderie (and weather) was perfect.

We had about 14 914s, a couple 911s, and a couple other cars join in the fun drive that Bob (saigon71) organized on Friday. Riding through the Pennsylvania countryside was great motivation to get my car done for next year's event. In addition, we had about 55 people at the dinner Friday night. It was also great to see 914 legend Steve Limbert, as well as all of the 914 enthusiasts.

I can't wait until next year.

Thanks,
Steve

Don't bother watching past 2:30. Seriously. I would advise strongly against fast forwarding to 2:30 and watching the end. It's really nothing worth looking at after 2:30, so just watch up until 2:30 then stop watching Set to 1080 full screen and crank up the volume....but not past 2:30 unsure.gif

I just found out that you guys had your meetings and a drive etc. that I would like to join next time. My problem is learning how to work this computer and getting info posted with this orginization. I was behind you to. I noticed the led center light but not the brake lights. Not surprising though since my LED headlights don't look like much in the daytime but at night they rock.

I just found out that you guys had your meetings and a drive etc. that I would like to join next time. My problem is learning how to work this computer and getting info posted with this orginization. My home is in Mount Wolf PA and I met a few of the guys at Hershey this past weekend and would like to be informed if you all have any "car runs" or anything like that coming up.

We chatted with you for a while... Welcome!

The "World" is a great source of info for all your 914 needs!

I followed you and your son down Rt 83 south for a few miles too.
John

Hello John from Doug in Shrewsbury/New Freedom Pa.

I'm going to try to make the Carlisle Imports and Kit Cars show on May 16th.
PCA Central Pa region is planning a gathering of Porsche's for this one and it's pretty much spelled out in the PCA regional News Letter. The 914's are well received and they want to see more of them coming to the events. Might be a good one for all us local's to attend.

Also, there is also the VDUB Show at Latimore (near Gettysburg off of Rt 15) this Summer that we've had a group of 914's attend the last two years. It's mainly a VW Show but Air Cooled Porsche's are welcomed.

Anyone else interested?

Hello Doug,
I just sent an email to Tim from the Carlisle Show to try to gain acceptence to the Porsche Event there. We will see. And I made a commitment ( as long as it dosen't rain ) to participate with the people at the Shrewsbury show on Friday. If you should happen to attend my 914 is olympic blue. Hope to see you there. By the way I will be retiring anytime in the next 1 to 5 years.
Thanks Very Much,
John

I read on a watercooled vw forum that the Latimore show will not be held this year. Got any other info on the show?

Ps; what's the details on the shrewsbury show?

Thanks for reminding me of that festering stench, Scotty.

Forgot to ask:

Bob, I missed listening to your stereo.

I didn't notice any LED tailights on the rally. Did anybody have them?

I think Ken has them on Babydoll confused24.gif

Late to the party again, but yes, I do. I like them.
