914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 3rd brake light

Posted by: partwerks Jan 24 2015, 09:05 PM

I'd like to add a 3rd brake light, and do like the one I have on the Jetta, but looks like I would be brake light challenged to even begin to mount/make that work? Probably wouldn't work, as it was designed to be inside.

In another Garage post a few weeks ago I posted one that I put on our `88 Westy which basically adheres to the inside of the glass, & a bunch of others added in other ideas too.

Search the threads 30-90 days ago for it.

Here ya go!

I ended up going with this in red.

Only 5/16" wide with adhesive back. I'm thinking I will try and find a short piece of polished stainless tubing, or black iron, and maybe about 3/8" inside diameter, and cut out about a third of the wall lengthwise, and roll it with a bit of curve to match the roll bar with the opening facing towards the back and leave an area uncut to spot weld a tab/foot on each end a ways to use some adhesive to stick to the inside of the rear window, and then find some plugs at Ace, to cap the ends??

I think maybe I can possibly get by rolling a bit of curve in it after I cut a section out, since there won't be that much of a radius. It may possibly distort it also. We'll see.

a blue brake light?

Why go to all the trouble. Just stick it on. Here's the stick on 24" brake light now 3 years old. Put a rubber grommet in the chrome trim and run the wires inside. Dab of glue to seal the wires water tight, and you have a simple and large 3rd brake light.

How did you mount it on the underside and still be able to be visible from the rear. Did you make a wedge or something. Any chance of a close up shot of this. Thanks

The shape of the LED tape is oval which makes it visible from several angles. Mounting it on the underside looks a little cleaner, hidden, and still very bright.

I'm thinking this might work.

I just rolled a piece of 1/2" square tubing to the curve of the roll bar, and used the plasma to cut out one side, and smoothed off the edge, and then spot welded some tabs/feet on the ends on the up side. I got a couple of square plugs to cap the end. Hopefully the tabs will tuck up in behind the roll bar pad. Plan on using that 2 sided sticky whatever it is called on the tabs to hold to the glass.

Bought one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Pcs-17cm-Red-COB-LED-Car-SUV-Daytime-Running-Light-Driving-Fog-Light-Lamp-Bar-/221638184824?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item339aaa4f78&vxp=mtr

(search eBay for 'red cob led bar') and stuck it to the rear window (actually jammed between the cage and the window, but you get the idea).

Bright, cheap, and a spare for some other purpose later...

Is the width about 5/8"

Is it more orange, or a red in color?
