Hmmmm...
The LA Lit and Toy Show, March 7th?
The SoCal All Porsche Swap and Car Show March 8th?
Amelia Island March 13th in Jacksonville, FL?
It seems to me that (with a slight detour to Las Vegas) the cities of Albuquerque, Dallas and Mobile might make up a nice romp across the country.
Thoughts? Ideas? I think it would be cool to drive a 914 from coast to coast. Especially being a featured mark at Amelia. It would be nice to document it. GoPro, Instagram, Blog??? Maybe a few gear head get togethers along the way?
Still thinking about it but... It's beyond intriguing for sure.

Sign up... the world wants to hear what 914 ownership is all about.
This sounds like a great idea. I drove my E30 from where you're at (I work out at Camp Williams a lot) back home to Houston and it was a lot of fun. I can only imagine driving a 914 being even more fun!
I don't know what it is, but there's something very beautiful about New Mexico every time I pass through... I stayed in Albuquerque one night on the way back from Utah and it was pretty chill hanging around downtown.
After a few drives throughout the country (Ft. Bragg to Houston, Ft. Lewis to Houston, LA to Houston), I have come to really enjoy those kinds of trips. I dread flying nowadays...
I highly recommend Austin while you're passing through Texas. I lived there for four years during college. In my opinion, it's the best city to visit in Texas.
Hmmm... maybe next year after the build is roadworthy and vetted...
Yes You Should! Do it. I mean really. Do it.
I'll meet you at this end.
I did a cross country drive in a '70 Cuda. New York to Los Angeles. Worth doing. Bring tools.
Do it.... I think about it regularly. I went back and forth to school in late 60's..
58 Chevy Impala(I think), A couple of friend's totally unmemorabke sedans, two round trips in my XK-140, and one RT in a 914.
The 914 made it from NYC to Cedar Rapids IA in one day. First stop for gas just into Ohio. That trip was in 72.
Every few months I approach an off-ramp in CT and say.... I don't have to get off... There's no tracking device in the 914..... I could leave my cell phone and EZ-Pass in my office....
See Ya!
Talk to Shoe. He's crossed the country in his tenners a few times.
Throw off the bowlines.
My wife and I have considered this a couple times. You know . . . bucket list . . . drive cross country in a 914. We always come to the same conclusion: The drive one way would be fun. But, we wouldn't want to drive all the way back once we got there. So maybe ship the car back and fly? It seems like I remember reading somewhere that Rick drove his car one way, left it for a few months, and then went and drove it home.
I have made a few long trips, looking forward to doing more as I continually get my teener sorted out. I envy you having the option to go anywhere in March or April, just not possible where I live if you want to keep your car out of the salt. I hope you do the trip and share like that guy who shipped his 911 to Europe and spent a lot of time posting his trip, I enjoyed following that. I have been invited to visit a friend in Yuma Arizona and am thinking about doing the trip in the teener, worried about the heat though, not for the 914 but for me, I think would be hospitalized in 100 degree temps!

I drove almost there and back in 2013, left Sacramento area, drove to Vegas and spent the night, then to Albuquerque, from there through Dallas to Atlanta TX, then back to Albuquerque, up to Durango for RRC, then to SLC (following Mr Shea) then through Reno and home.......12 days 4600 miles. Had a great time, despite some problems....can't wait to do it again.
Talk with Mark (aka Bartlett 914) he drove his 914 all over the USA using it as his work car for his business.
I think it would be fun, just bring tools and some spare parts (cultch cable......)
Can't remember his name, maybe the story was in Panarama magazine, I think I read about here though, maybe somebody did a link you could click on. Anyway it was a real great read and lots of interesting pictures, what he found interesting I did as well. I spent 4 years in Germany and travelled around a good bit, so his trip was a bit of a ride down memory lane for me.

I did it in my 914 in 1984. It was 10yrs old and had about 110k miles on it. No issues..me and my dog. Got a little hot crossing the nevada desert at 90mph. My wife followed me in her saab 900 turbo.
My longest was the drive from Oakland, CA to Little Rock, AR which is about 2,000 miles one way.
Surprisingly uneventful and easy if you go prepared.
You can do it!
I already did Monterey and back without an incident. About 21mpg. Everything is new and I have that as a basic shakedown cruise under my belt. My scavenge line was a little loose and I had some fuel delivery issues that we've addressed so, I think it's ready...
Here's one option:
Here's another...
I say go for it....It'll be inspirational for those that cannot do something like that...at least we can read about and say "I know that guy!"
Getting there... looking for 600ish mile days so I can enjoy the drive and stop at some out of the way places.
Anybody have any "Out of the Way" places suggestions along either of those routes? (wait... is that an oxymoron? Out of the way, along the route?)
Absolutely!
Maybe on your route, Route 66 and Joshua Tree National Forest. Skull Rock
Probably not on your way. Goblin Valley
Attached image(s)
Go the northern Texas route...then at Alexandra LA cut down to Baton Rouge to New Orleans. Easy drive. New Orleans is worth a stop too. Then over to Mobile.
ElPaso route is 800 miles of straight barren wilderness IMHO
Fun trip!
An improved a new version of Charles Kuralt. If you go the El Paso route be sure to hit Cattleman's Steak House. It will be the best steak you'll ever taste. I've eaten there 3 times w/ large groups and everyone always says the steak was cooked to perfection (as they ordered it) and the best they can remember. IIRC, they're closed on Tuesdays!
I've done a few of these,http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/ I imagine it wouldnt be too much different in a 914. HIGHLY recommend a partner, either in a second car, or as passenger.
I say do it! Once I get my car sorted and reliable, I plan a 4 corners Trip of the US.
Also, I've used this site for cycle routes as amazing motorcycle routes, would be great in a 914 as well (all paved) Clock on the map and will give all kinds of routes all OFF super slab. http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/interactive-network-map/
Here is the southern tier route - http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/southern-tier/ MAN now you have me motivated!
Sounds like a fun trip. Wife and I drove from Oregon to NY in 2008 and it was great fun. One thought though; we had planned long driving days as well but found that we tended to cover many fewer miles than we originally thought we would. I think that we might have averaged somewhere around five hundred miles a day, give or take. Mind you this was in our A4, a car that is considerably more comfortable than our 914. But then, our age (in our senior years) might have had an impact too. If you can do it, go for it. It will be a trip you will remember for the rest of your lives. And don't worry about mechanical issues either. I mean, what's more reliable than a Volkswagen!?
Did this back in 1976 Pensacola Fl to San Diego in a 74 2.0. Back again San Diego to Pittsburgh in a 70 914 -6. Both times with the wife.....do I get an award for that??
The 74 2.0 trip was liesurely and "pleasant", lots of stops on a loose time frame.
The way home in the six was leave Saturday morning, starting out pleasant evolving into GET ME THE F... OUTTA HERE!!!! by Saturday afternoon. Iron manned it from there and got home to watch the Steelers on Monday Night Football.
The 3000 RPM resonance drone can kill you!!!!!
I've done a number of long-distance one way trips in our 914 (CO to MN, MN to FL, FL to AZ, AZ to WA, WA to VA, VA to WA, WA to VA, VA to CO, CO to VA). Some were solo, some were with my wife. All were associated with military transfers (too bad I couldn't take it overseas with me).
It's been a while since the last one (1993), but I now have a route planned that goes through all of the lower 48 states plus a couple of Canadian provinces. Wife thinks I'm crazy, but it's something I would really like to do. We'll see. Maybe when the car turns 50 . . .
If you make it to the east coast you might just as well come up this way (VA). I volunteer at a great museum (http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/) and would be glad to show you around. Even better, Scotty's shop is just up the road.
Steve A-
YES!
And take a little detour in in AL to Foley for lunch or dinner at Lambert's Cafe - "Home of the Throwed Rolls"!! Go hungry!

Cheers!

You need a copilot?
A couple of things:
- Bring earplugs. They make the trip a whole lot more endurable. You're likely going to be driving with the windows down, and of course with that motor, you're going to very fatigued by all the noise. Earbud earphones can work for keeping the noise out as well.
- Bring a cooler with ice in it and a washcloth can be a lifesaver. The ice will melt, the washcloth will soak up the cold water, and you can drape the cloth around your neck to keep your head cool. Having a half-dozen bottles of water in the cooler is also a requirement.
Hopefully your route won't be as gaddawful hot as the trip from the SF Bay to SLC was, but if it is you should be prepared.

I did this one and continued up the coast to Philly. Great drive...
Thanks guys.
That's the plan Mike. If I end up doing this, I'll probably keep the car at my brothers house in live oak and fly back there to drive it up to Hershey. Then... From Hershey?
After Hershey you may as well come to Canada! I will take you for a lobster and a beer if you make it to Moncton! Hershey time could still see snow storms and salt on the road though, that is the big issue for us. I will follow your progress if you post your trip! Now I gotta go snow low my driveway so I can get the cars out so the wife and I can go to work!

The planning of this trip reminds me we should resurrect the "914 help line". I know it existed many years ago but should be updated.
Eric - I think the admins had access to it if it still exists.
Eric, I might be available for a few days after Hershey for a side trip. There is a fabulous car museum in Philly, http://www.simeonemuseum.org/the-collection . They have a 917 and cheesesteaks!
We could go as a flight of two.
Awesome plans. My sons and I have been dreaming of such a trip, but the real world keeps interfering...
Two suggestions for the Texas crossing:
Toothpicks to prop your eyes open as you doze off
Hand throttle or brick on the accelerator for a makeshift cruise control
I have rooms booked in the following cities:
Long Beach
Las Vegas
Albuquerque
Dallas
New Orleans
Live Oak - Family
Kingsland, GA
Plan is to fly out of Jacksonville on 3/16 and fly back 4/15 then,
Drive to Richmond
Drive to Hershey
Head back to SLC via 70 and Denver (no more Wyoming, especially this time of the year!!)
My version of an "Ironbutt" ride.
Post #30 - THE BIG TEXAN STEAKHOUSE - Amarillo, Texas on I-40.
Free 72 Oz. Steak if you can eat it in 30 minutes!
Went to College in Canyon, 27 miles south of "Amarillo by Morning"...George Strait!!
That is the Wild West!!!
Eric if you are going to Amelia Island, may have to drive my 914 up!
Vysoc
X2 on the Northern route through Texas....
If you can.... side route up through the enchanted forest through Taos...
Drive across the Gorge Bridge and take lots of pictures along the way.
See ya in Cali.
Sounds like a great adventure! Julie and I are taking the easy way into Amelia Island by simply flying into Jacksonville. Time is short, but have to go see the concours and attendant Amelia Island events.
Hope to see you there!
Looks like it's a go

15 years ago I took my 8 year old grandson on a trip to San Diego and back. We did all the tourist stuff along the way. Even saw all three of Billy the kids graves.lol.stops included Yuma prison, sea world, grand canyon, Vegas, meteor crater, painted desert, monument valley, lake havasau. We even saw a coyote chasing a road runner in the az dessert. I will admit that spending 4 weeks in a 914 with an 8 year old was quite challenging.
Looks great, I am in Alexandria VA (basically between Richmond & Hershey) if you need anything
Eric,
We are staying in St. Mary's, GA for the Amelia Island Concours. This is apparently right next to Kingsland, so we should meet up when you arrive.
Sounds like an awesome trip!
I'm about 30 minutes south of Hershey. Let me know if you need anything on this leg of the journey, including free accommodations.
Oh yes, count on me if you need help and you're in the area.
Like directions back to your country.
Dumbass!!!
How did you get so far off course?

You make me jalous with this sort of plans. To get my head around this distance, I took the map and plotted a 3200 mile trip from Amsterdam to... well, Perm, east of Moskow, north of Kazachstan! In short, not a trip I want to undertake here in Europe. Eastern from Germany, Poland start the no go areas for a man in a simple Porsche... Well in any car, for that matter...
You guys must be so glad and proud to be able to consider travelling that distance without borders, passports, customs.
Enjoy the trip and please post pictures!
Menno
One thing for our European brethren to realize: America is really BIG! It's easy to look on a map and say, "Oh yeah, I guess it's big." But when you start comparing distances and such to things you're familiar with, you get a real sense of "OMG that place is HUGE!"
It takes just about the same amount of time for a jet to cross the continental US as it does to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. That is seriously big!
...And, of course, Russia kind of dwarfs the US, unless you count Alaska and/or Hawaii.

Be sure to put some dates on the stops when u can. Looks like a fun trip!
Let me know when you plan to be in the ABQ! Sounds like a helluva journey!
Ummm Tom, I don't believe you will ever grow up. And that's a good thing.
Important: this trip will fulfill a personal goal and will, more importantly, honor the Porsche 914. Moreover, the fact that the 914 is all grown up with its featured status at one of the worlds most prestigious automobile events.
I want to meet you and your 914 along the way. I want to document the adventure and... your adventure with your 914. If you're along the route, I'd like to hook up and talk 914 with you. Let's get this party started.
Here's the dates:
March 7th - Corona Del Mar Beach - Beach Party! From sea to shining sea send off. Stay tuned for details!
March 8th - Anaheim. SoCal all Porsche Swap and Car Show. Phoenix Club.
March 8th - Las Vegas, NV - Dinner
March 9th - Flagstaff, AZ - Lunch
March 9th - Albuquerque, NM - Dinner. Turtle Mountain? Jon, should I bring a guitar?
March 10th - Amarillo, TX - Lunch
March 10th - Dallas, TX - Dinner
March 11th - Shreveport, LA - Lunch
March 11th - New Orleans, LA - Dinner
March 12th - Mobile, AL - Lunch
March 12th - Live Oak, FL - Dinner
March 13th - Jacksonville, FL - Lunch
March 13th - Amelia Island, FL - "We Made It" (hopefully) Party! Looking to do another Beach Party this afternoon/evending.
What route are you taking from SLC to LA......if you go through Sacramento let me know.....I'll buy you dinner, beer, or lunch, beer.
So are you doing this trip alone, or do you have a passenger?
If I could take the time off it would be an awesome trip, my son lives in Albuquerque and my daughter lives between Dallas and Shreveport! Next year I'll drive to Texas and back again....should have the car back on the road by then.
Have fun Eric.....sounds like a great adventure.
Jeff
"March 9th - Albuquerque, NM - Dinner. Turtle Mountain? Jon, should I bring a guitar?"
I will try and drive down in the 914 from Durango on the 9th for Dinner.
I'm in for lunch on the 11th in Shreveport. Hopefully the car is ready by then haha.
Lots of good places to eat in town.
Edit: My bad - meant to say lunch is on me.
Don't forget to pack your Midol and defibrillator this time buddy.
Hey Eric,
I would like to offer a donation of .5 cents per mile on your cross country trip for party time expenses with 914er's when you get there.
Accept Yes or No offer??
Hmmm, Let me see 2,000 miles @ .05 cents== $100bucks
Anybody else in for a donation if Eric accepts????
Tom
Lucky you. Free Food at each stop. (If you play your cards right don't forget samples )
Tom, I think I still have your credit card number!
...and Scatty's and Dave's
Any recovering videographers want to ride shotgun?
bring a trailer in tow. I've got a pile of clappers for you
No... I may have it meet me in Hershey though. Weather over the Rockies can be quite challenging in April.
And... It's just a hunch but, I believe there's a ice age coming for the northeast and there might be a glacier in the parking lot at Hershey this year.
Aren't you an ex-Michigander like me? I'm in Dallas and could meet up with you in the DFW area. Dinner would work if you're still on schedule. Maybe a quick tour of Dealey Plaza (where JFK was assassinated)?
Oh yes... We can always share the room......
But nothing more.....
Cool trip, but your route is all wrong, you need to stay on I40 until Nashville (spare room, cold beer, guitars, and 914 stuff here)
Hey Jeff, heading down to LA the direct route.
I plan on leaving the swap around 2-3:00 to get to Vegas by dinner. That's about the time things wind down.
I'll be leaving the car in Live Oak until mid April. Then I'll fly back out and drive it up to Hershey. Then back to SLC via somewhere in Tenessee perhaps!
So how was the trip?
There's ribs in Tennessee.
Looking to do East and West Coast "Beach Parties"!
I'm in need of a little assistance from any Jacksonville teeners in finding a beach location similar to the Cali location.
West Coast
When - March 7th
Where - Corona Del Mar Beach
Time - 5:00 - ?
East Coast
When - March 13th (or... could be later as people arrive)
Where - Jacksonville/Amelia Island?
Time - 5:00
Vegas dinner is shaping up to be the Hoffbrauhaus. I need to nail down the time as it will dictate when I need to leave Anaheim Sunday.
Albuquerque sounds like it's in stone, as well as Flagstaff lunch. Shreveport - We'll need to pick a spot. Dallas as well...
Anyone in J-Ville that can offer their local expertise, PM me.
The beach party is open to any and all.
I suppose this means the 914 guys won't show up until after 6:00 on a Saturday.
Word has it, we have a beach house in J-ville
Sooooooo, where is lunch March 9 in Flagstaff. I'm at Chino Valley Az. Would b a good cruise for the 914. But it all depends on the weather. Would like to met u.
Here's a suggestion for Shreveport that is very near the I-20/I-49 interchange: http://www.herbyks.net - should whet your appetite for New Orleans
I am jealous.
If I could I would, but I cannot this year....
Good luck, keep in touch.
If you need help in the middle of no where, give me a call.
Rich
Rich, I called last night. Forgot about the whole time zone thing... sorry, you didn't sound amuzed.
Herby K's looks "Perfect"!! - Shreveport is in the books.
Any teeners in Amarillo?
Let's nail down a good local Dallas casual dinning spot and get some Dallas/Ft. Worth teeners out there.
The in place for cars music and food (as others have told me) is Gas Monkey Garage Bar and Grill in Dallas. Centrally located for east and west folks. Anyone here know how the food is?
http://www.gasmonkeygarage.com
http://gasmonkeybarngrill.com
Awesome sounding trip..... I may have to re-think going to Amelia.
Have you planned your route from Live Oak to Hershey? Will you be stopping in VA?
Inquiring minds want to know . . .
I'll be leaving the car in Live Oak until mid April. Then I'll fly back out and drive it up to Hershey. Then back to SLC via somewhere in Tenessee perhaps!
[/quote]
May want to consider returning via Hickory Tree, TN
Tom
Where are you going after March 13th? How are you getting back to the west coast?
Oops - I see it now. Leaving the car in Live Oak until Hershey.
If we are still up to our necks in snow I can understand you not coming to Moncton. However, if you do, the first beer and a lobster are on me! It's just up the road a bit from Hershey, well quite a bit! I'm pretty sure I can get you a death defying ride on a snowmobile!

Gas Monkey looks like a lot of fun... I'm good with that.
Commanders in New Orleans: turtle soup & bread pudding is a must.
Betty and I will see you in Dallas at the Gas Monkey Grill.
7pm. All the locals need to show up and enjoy dinner. We checked the calendar and there are no concerts that night.
And we will see you again in Jacksonville for the beach party and the concour.
If you have any problems with the car, I have loads of spare parts available, and I can get access to new parts easy (gaskets, seals, etc...)
Betty is excited about Amelia island. She keeps trying to make it sooner.
Awesome Clay.
Hey Gang, the "Kickstarter" campaign is officially live:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=250212
We could use your help turning this into a serious documentary. Looking forward to meeting ya'll (getting in my Southern mode) along the way!
If you want to drive a little north, come up to New England! I (dare I say te youngest owner) will be around to tell my story and show off my teener(s)! I will sweeten the deal with a nights stay in the guest house and a big pancake breakast?
Or maybe it's best to stay out of the 8 feet of snow up in NE.
-Finn
This is awesome! I've owned 3 914s and I haven't even driven them out of state. But my LE will be in the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance C&C so would love to be part of the documentary if you're there!
Should be a great trip...
Back in '81 I drove mine from Pittsburgh to visit my brother in Key West.
Lots of stories from that trip.
Stayed for a month. If I didn't own a house back in PA I would have just stayed there.
only problem was a vapor lock on a 100+ degree day in Georgia. coasted it to an underpass, parked it in the shade, got out a blanket walked over to a grassy area and caught some rays while the car cooled off enough to start.
Probably my best vacation ever.
If you have half as much fun, you should go to jail for it.
I'll try to make the Gas Monkey Grill, it sounds like a good time. But I did want to point out that the timing from Amarillo to Dallas may present some issues. If you're in Amarillo at noon, and assuming you're there for an hour, you may be pressing it to get to Gas Monkey by 7:00. Amarillo is an easy 5.5 hour run to Dallas. The traffic around rush hour is a bear, and you'll be plowing through a good portion of it coming from the west. 'Course you are in the teener and it COULD be done quicker, just gotta watch those Buford T. Justice small town sheriiffs. Queue up "East Bound and Down" music here...
Oops double post
Have a great trip Eric!
This is a trip everyone should make! I drove a 914 from Boston to Los Angeles back in 1991 and had a great time.
Thanks Rob, we'll try to make an early go of it and buy ourselves an hour.
X-country would be Seattle to Jacksonville.
I talked to Richmond about your stop today. They said no.
Hey Eric,
I may try to make it to Big Corona Beach in Corona Del Mar for the send off, if I can get my butt in gear.
Quick question: It's a pretty good sized beach... how will I find you guys? Look for a fire pit surrounded by jack stands?
Am I supposed to bring hot dogs, etc?
Parking usually reeks up there during the day, but maybe by that late in the day it will have thinned out.
Hello Las Vegas!!
We have an entire parking lot of "Conversion Cars"
Thanks so much Eric and your band of merry men for the great beach gathering Saturday night. I don't know how you guys managed to pull this whole thing off and do the swap Sunday, but it was class and fun. Get some sleep, you'll need it!!!!!
Eric arrives in Vegas.

We are doing daily updates of Eric and Jamie's cross-country trip - http://fourteenermotoring.com
First time I have ever cried myself to sleep over the 914. :-(
.
We will be in Flagstaff at 12:30!!!
Eric, sorry I missed u at Flagstaff today. Had unexpected call from Ca. about my Dad falling down and going to hospital. I'm at Beuna Park now, and Dad is OK...May b one day I'll take a cruise up your way. Have a good trip, and b safe, and watch out fot the other guy...
Eric, when/what is your return trip/route?
I'd be willing to take Thursday before Hershey off if enough of you want to come to Richmond and stroke Eric's ego a little more
ONLY his ego please
Is Andy "SoCalAndy" joined Eric and Jaime on this journey? His been with them since saturday night. Not with his beautiful 914-6 but with his SUV. Maybe his carrying all the supplies. Have a wonderful journey to the group and be safe! God Bless!
