The steering wheel in my '73 2.0 914 does not have leather covering around the rim like most of the pictures I see; I assume it had been stripped off at some point. Were all steering wheels leather covered? Any suggestions on sending it out to get recovered?

The leather wrapping was an option, I believe dealer-installed.

You can tell what it was by the part number. Should be something like 914 347 804 11. Post it here and we'll figure it out.

I believe that all Appearance Package equipped 2.0 cars in 1973 came with leather covered steering wheels. My original wheel degraded from the sun at the top of the wheel facing the windshield and was replaced with a standard plastic wheel that came with non-Appearance Package cars. My original wheel is still awaiting my interior refresh and I understand several folks will recover the wheels for something in the neighborhood of $200. Dallas charges about $320 -400 and does a great job. I would not trust agla. You will not fiind anyone who charges $200.

+1 on Dallas Custom Steering Wheels, I have 2 being recovered right now! Single wrap like original $349 double wrap like GT/RS version $379, Don is the best. Turnaround is 3 to 4 days.

And there is a group who has a booth at the SoCal Porsche Swap Meet every year, but I don't recall their company name. IIRC Autos International uses them to do the steering wheels too.

Hopefully somebody else can chime in with the name, since I'm brain dead right now.

Also, the leather wrapped steering wheel was not dealer installed - although a dealer could swap one from another car or add one from stock.

They were a factory option - either as part of the Appearance (Comfort) Group of options as noted above (most common) - but also as a single stand alone option if so ordered.

Also anyone could swap in a leather one after the fact, or get a plain wheel leather wrapped by one of the shops who did that type of work, since even the factory ones were the same under the leather.
