If you don't push up on the release handle the ratchet type are safe to use.... flame away.

I just went to Sears two hours ago and why I didn't notice the price for today!!!
I already have 4 jack stands but all occupied and I need more that is why I'm using two old rotor as jack stand under the tires.
What I got from Sears was only the impact tool.
