VIN: 4732905940

Posted by: ! Feb 8 2005, 12:36 PM

It's a 73, made in Germany....prolly built in 72. Until 81 when all mnufacturers went to a long VIN #, most of the codes were just internal tracking numbers....color was on another tag, build date on an another...

American cars...now....can tell you what engine, trans and other otions by the VIN and the other codes on the same plate ...

Posted by: bd1308 Feb 8 2005, 12:43 PM

damn...so if its a 73, then should i go with a 1.7 or a 2.0 engine? both are D-jet and both will read the same timing settings on the placard in the engine compartment

for $95, you can get a Certificate of Authenticity (COA)

http://www.356registry.org/Tech/CofA.pdf

other than that, you'd have to look for tale-tell signs on the vehicle to try and figure out what it came with...not too hard as long as the car is not molested too badly...

well, Karmann (Osnabruck, Germany) has a Museum and there is at least one 914 in it (this is where all 4-cyl were built)

the only 914 in the Porsche Museum (Stuttgart, Germany) is the silver 914-8 (#914006)

don't know if there is a 914 in the Volkswagen Museum (Wolfsburg, Germany) confused24.gif

oh and if they didnt build the cars at Karmann, where did they build them? I thought it was like a triple team effort

all 4 cylinders were build by karman, for the 6 cylinders, the shell was build by karmann and then shipped to porsche and build/finished there ...

i see now. Thanks. psst....if you all still would like to help me, check otu the 1.8 AAR ->2.0 engine Q....

Posted by: davep Feb 8 2005, 02:18 PM

If you want to know the original engine type there are two hints at least.
The decal in the engine compartment should show EA for a 1.7 or a GA for the 2.0.
The decal on the gas tank expansion chamber should show SR tires for a 1.7 or HR tires for a 2.0.

Now the Karmann badge on the drivers door hinge post shows the paint code and the chassis number. The chassis number is basically a date code for the body.

The DOT decal on the drivers door latch post shows the month the car was completed.

Guten Tag,
Britt

well, please don't ask me to take this pic from my car, it hibernates biggrin.gif

I found a pic in Johnson's Restorer's Guide, page 78

just to clarify - this badge doesn't show the b-day, it shows the Karmann body number (in my case 2639549) which can be decoded to the day, the shell was built at Karmann, Germany
in case of my teener - June 26th, 1974

the VIN sticker (at the driver's side b-row) says 06/74, so I know that the whole car fas finished in June 1974
so I can enclose the day my teener left the factory - it has to be between June 26th and June 30th 1974
