So that was your gateway 914?
Posted by: gfg3 Mar 20 2015, 05:47 AM
My first baby. Picture taken around July 1970. The most basic 914 you could buy in '70. I couldn't afford any upgrades.

This was taken at my about-to-be wife's house outside of Princeton. Both house and car have since been sold.....sadly.

Naked sails and painted bumpers, the way they were meant to be. I have a yellow '72 that came that way that has been on jack stands too long! Except for the faded photo, it will look just like that....well, except that I found a good set of Pedrinis

My favorite look, too. Choice back then was between a TR-6 or the 914. I never felt that I made a wrong decision. Unfortunately sold it back in '75. I love my current '75, but there's something really honest about the early models with no chrome and painted sails.

I know I'm going overboard on this "but for me" that look captures the essence of the 914.

Oldest pic I have of my LE- summer of 74 or 75, with the old black bumper & spoiler my Pop had painted @ the dealer because all the phoenix red was just too much for him He also had the rear bumper painted black but left the lower valence phoenix red. The car looked like that until 2002, when I had it repainted & put back to stock.

My first one, an L20E Signal Orange '72 with 30K miles in 1977.
Put 120K miles on it and sold it to buy an L31M Scarlet Red '76 in 1983 with 50K miles. Still have it. Now with 85K miles on working odometer. Need to drive it more!

35K in 32 years? You need to make that odometer work harder.
OT: did you follow Trojan baseball when you were there? My best friend played on that team.

Sure did. The 1970 Trojans won the first of 5 consecutive College World Series titles that year. I followed Dave Kingman's career while he played for the SF Giants, and others, finally finishing with Oakland in 1986.
Who was your friend? I remember Jim George, Cal Meier, and Mark Sogge from that team.
I played on the varsity water polo team in the Fall of 1969. Sadly, we weren't nearly as successful as that group of guys coached by Rod Dedeaux. Fight On!

Did you play water polo with Tom Shaw? Steve Busby was my buddy who played baseball. He was the winning pitcher in the '71 NCAA championship game.
Sorry for the hijack, but the topic is Throwback after all.

Yes, Busby was pretty hot in college and started out great in the majors. Wasn't he fighting a back or shoulder injury?
Last one . . . I played with Greg Fink, Mike Pickett, George Watson, John Williams, Jerry Nourse, and others. Don't specifically remember Tom Shaw, though.
John Williams and I played on the same water polo/swim teams at La Habra High School (California). He went on to become the Varsity Water Polo coach at USC for many years.
TBT over . . . .

This is my non-appearance group black 72 and the photo was taken around mid 1973...somebody did a hit and run with a big van and backed onto the hood, so before I had it repainted, I thought I'd try some graphics . My Inspiration was the 'John Player Special' group look, black cars with muted gold graphics, no advertising. Old school, taped it off and sprayed with rattle can touch up paint, cut vinyl letters were a LONG way off. Looking at it now, it may have been a little over the top! Thought it was cool at the time, got a lot of looks.

1981vacation in San Diego. Mom borrowed her friends car. I am the little hood rat on passengers side. . Of course I had no idea what a 914 was at that time, or the impact Porsches would have on me later in life.

Jesus, that bowl looks to be the size of a coffee cup. You must have grown up in Northern Cali.
