So somewhere in my stash of bags, I lost the little bolt that holds the speedometer drive gear to the transmission.

Where can I get one of these? What's the threading/pitch on that little bolt?

Note, it has to have that little tip to stick into the side of the angle drive casing thingy.

think Pelican parts has it

might try a hardware store that has lots of those little bin's on the back wall or a porsche or vw shop.

which shows the bolt, washer and a threaded insert?

It looks like parts numbers:

901 378 272 03 - hexgon head bolt (no size...prob M8/1.0)
900 031 001 02 - washer 8mm od/4mm id
999 504 070 00 - threaded insert


I don't believe I have the threaded insert in there either. Any transmission guru's point me in the right direction?

I'm pretty sure it's 8x1.25. Just a standard bolt, with the modified nipple.

Can you post a pic? I suspect Dr. Evil has bags of them. I probably have a few running around here, but can't even guess at where to start looking for one.

You can pull the rear cover pretty easily to get a helicoil installed. Just make sure you're familiar with the order of parts for the reverse gear. That's the only parts you have to deal with when pulling the rear cover.

Is there supposed to be a helicoil in there? I don't have the bolt (lost it) to take a picture of it. I was just looking at the parts in the PET stuff and I saw the bolt and washer (expected that of course) but also so that there is a threaded insert that goes in there also.

Pulling the rear cover might be my only option though to get a good look at it. Can pulling the rear cover be done with trans installed? How many pieces are going to come flying out all over the ground when I do that? :-) I may have to unbolt the exhaust muffler (triad) from the heat exchangers to get some working room I suppose.

Note: I'm a weekend mechanic. Haha!!

Assuming it's a side shifter, not too much will fall out other than the reverse idler gear as suggested. Nothing else should come out. You'll have to remove the muffler as you noted. Don't forget to drain the oil first!

On another note, I made one of those bolts once in a pinch, using a regular 8mm bolt, and it worked fine. Better to get a correct one though.
