Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 13 2015, 03:48 PM

We are wrapping up the tooling on the late dash tops in another 3-4 weeks. I say 5 as typically there's always something that takes a little longer. These are made from a NOS original. The method of manufacture will allow it to look like NOS, but will actually be more robust in that you will not have the expansion and contraction issues the OEM did, but the texture is an exact duplicate.

We are doing something a little different in having 2 levels of group buy. If you sign up before these go in production, your cost will be $310, if you execute the transaction, when these are a week from being ready to ship. Think "pre-order".

So you will have a period 1 week prior to place the order, we will contact you to let you know. This gets you the very best pricing.

If you can't do it right away, we will be keeping the GB open for 30 days after we start shipping , your order will be filled in order, and you cost will be $400. The full retail on these will be $550.

We didn't want to put this out there until we know we could make a good product.

I was really hoping to have a prototype ready for WCR, but it's just too close.

I wanted to thank Ken for making his NOS dash available for duplication, so the part will bear his name.

So who's game?

Wow! What great news! I want one but what if I have to bail later. BTW: I have a crack free early dash pad iffin you think you want to reproduce the early ones too... shades.gif

Great new (I have a crack free dash, so its not a huge thing for me.. but the community it certainly is)!!!! Is the targa bar pad also in the works?

Posted by: dlkawashima Apr 13 2015, 04:05 PM

Same here, mine is crack free too, but I'm very interested in purchasing one of these as a backup. Will there be a core exchange requirement? And +1 for the targa bar pad!

I have a brand new in the box dash from AP Products (about 5 years old). How can I tell the difference between new and old? I need at least one and will "pre-order".

This is awesome.

PS: I need three targa pads...... wink.gif

I am honored. And glad that I don't have to keep my mouth shut anymore! Mark and I have talked about this on and off for what seems like a few years now, and I was excited to be involved, even if all I did was loan him a part.

And, yes, I know that my NOS piece is not worth as much now, but I did it for you people! beerchug.gif

Posted by: NFBrown Apr 13 2015, 06:58 PM

The Porsche parts catalog only lists one top pad (but different early and late lower pads)so I assume these new pads will fit early or late? Perhaps they just look a little different.

Mark, I want one for my very early '73. Just tell us where and when to sign up.

I'm sorry, we are molding in high pressure tooling. So we can't really have the ability to delete, like it was being recovered.
I'd love to help you out, but it wouldn't pencil out to make the tool modifiable for this option.

I only have late cars, so I would have to double check, but it is my understanding the variation is in the clearance for the glove box. They very well may be interchangeable, with the later part superseding the previous, I will do some research before I dive into it.

Interestingly enough, I noticed the tops may be the same. I thought there was variation, but I can't see it very well in the pictures I can find. It may be the same part.

I am not positive, but I think that the underside of my dash does not have smooth vinyl all the way to the edge, which would be revealed on an early application without the side vents. Perhaps Mark can verify. I am guessing/hoping that the new units might be smooth.

The other thing that I have heard is that the late version somehow inhibits the glove box from opening all the way, but I can't see how that would be the case. Perhaps I am thinking of the bottom pad on that.

The difference is the notch for the glove box door.
you will notice that the glove box became narrower with the addition of the side vents on the dash.

As for the dash it's the original 74, uncracked dash.

I had thought the same, but only one part number would suggest there is no variation. We can ask for a measurement from n early car. But from what can be seen in the pictures is that the glove box lock area looks to have the same amount of relief in that area. The inner side is harder to see. Yes the glove box size has changed, but on a minor detail where the early dash tooling would fit the later style would not warrant making a new tool to decrease the area. There is no benefit to changing it.

I will call this a late dash, in that it was to fit onto a late car but there is only one part number.

Anyone with an early dash that they can measure the indentation?

I just took some measurements. Yes, they are different. The early dash is 2cm wider at the opening. I'm sure either can be made to fit early or late but to be correct, there are two different sizes. Here's why you should make the early one as well - 6's have become so valuable that anyone doing a restoration will want the correct dash. Even if an early dash was 2x what your charging now, it would sell. You may not have a bunch of pre-orders but if your new dash is an exact match, it will be gold to a 6 owner. I'm sure there are some origional GT's $200-350K these days that could use a new dash as well. Be the one they call.

Let me know if you need more early info. The dash on my easrly conversion car is in very good condition and eventually I will have to pull it off to refinish the metal dash.

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 14 2015, 05:37 AM

So, there is a difference. What year did the dash change to the vents , 73?

Posted by: anderssj Apr 14 2015, 05:45 AM

My '72 has dash vents . . . I'll check the build date later.

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 14 2015, 06:24 AM

Ok most likely a 71 cut off.

Posted by: mepstein Apr 14 2015, 06:29 AM

I've also read that the early dash pad flares out at the ends more to meet up with the non vented lower pad, so it may be more than just a wider glovebox opening that differentiates early and late.

Posted by: puffinator Apr 14 2015, 06:49 AM

The early version will be some time before I get to doing it. The tooling for this is VERY expensive, and as you can tell I'm not gouging the price to make a quick buck. The tooling is spread out over 200 units to make this work. Yes I will roll it back in to making more stuff, but honestly it would change the price significantly to make them knowing that I would only be able to sell 1/5 the volume. I may go there, but for now

I'll make parts that the majority can use when the set up is this high.

So you can use a late dashpad on an early car but the glovebox door won't open.
Early slot for glovebox= 34cm
Late slot for glovebox= 32cm

Posted by: mepstein Apr 16 2015, 06:16 AM

I sat a late dash pad on an early knee bolster and the ends didn't line up well. They weren't mounted on a car so it wasn't an exacting test. Slits also stated that the ashtray location is different on an early car. So it seems like an entire new mould would be needed if you really want to make an early pad fit right. My cars have I cracked dash pads but I plan to drive them for many years to come so it's one of those spares that I would really like to have.

The game plan is that we will have our 1st prototype ready after WCR. I know, I wanted to be able to bring it, but it didn't work out. When I know we have the details worked out and we're are gearing up from production we will start taking the orders. 7-10 days later when these start shipping we will bump the price up to the second tier. Making it desirable to get in early as you will get 1st and your price is less. But for those that don't have the cash then, they will still have a month to get the second tier before the offer expires.

Does his car have the fixed-position passenger seat, with the backrest incorporated into the backpad too? Our '71 (Jan '71 build date) has the fixed seat and no lower dash vents. I had a late '72 that had the adjustable passenger seat. I don't remember whether the lower dash pad had vents though confused24.gif

... Finally got around to checking the build date on my car: FEB 1972. If I remember correctly, the dealer said the dash change-over was a couple of months prior to that.

FWIW, I also checked my friend Shek's car (build date DEC 71); his has the new dash (end vents) but the old (non-retractable) seat belts. Here's his car/time capsule:

Wanted to update all on this. We have been going through some issues with the internal metal on this one it has to be perfect and we can't cast he top with all the pins in due to the angles they are at. Factory had some sexy expansion clips that went in after the fact. We had thought about recreating those, but the answer was much easier and better. We have designed an internal clip for the metal that will allow for the threaded pins to be turned in like a regular screw, due to the tight clearances, it wasn't like we could just weld a nut in place as it was too deep.

What does this mean to you?

It will be possible to actually have the troublesome studs set and to actually screw on the ones needed during the installation. We will provide just like the factory, but you will be able to screw in and out the studs for installation. We have yet to try this as we are finishing the other half of the tool this next week, but it means that the 1st part will be by July 10th.

I wanted to update everyone on this as there have been more than a few that have asked, but I'm finally happy with the solution we have figured out and I'm optimistic that the installation will be MUCH easier.

Mark

What the hell, sign me up too Mark. Thanks.

Posted by: Mikey914 Jul 17 2015, 06:31 PM

Well we have the metal pretty much squared away. We may add some reinforcement in the gauge cluster hood, but need so make sure it will not interfere with the tool. The OEM only has a 1/4" dis rod, and it's at the bend, not in the actual hood itself. While tho is not critical, I keep finding myself in the mode of while I'm doing this, we could improve something else.
We are finalizing the tool itself this next week and will be doing our first pull on the mold.

We should be test fitting this next Saturday. I have a car with everything out so as soon as it's ready we can check fit.

If I'm happy with the product we will start asking for orders with production to start the following week.

I'll be contacting all here in order of the thread.

Thanks to all, lots of pictures to follow soon.

Thanks,
Mark

Not too late. I'm just updating all that are interested. As spelled out in the 1st thread, I will open up the prepurchase phase as soon as I have my 1st article. It will take me about another 2 weeks to make the substructure in quantity and get the quantity of material I will need to make these.
So you should be fine. Even if you miss the 1st level of discount, the 2nd tier will be open for a few weeks I'd imagine.

Once I start shipping the price goes up. After all preorders are filled it goes to full retail.
I will start PMing all as soon as I have my first part in hand. You WILL need to bump this thread to get the code for the GB.

Technically, I'm only making the "late" one, but it should be able to be used on the early also. I will be checking the fit on an early car to see what differences there are if any other than the glove box door and how much that actually affects it.

The vent section is actually on the metal portion, covered with vinyl. We are doing the front section that has the ash try and the "hood" over the instrument cluster.
They should in theory fit and the only real issue we have anticipated is the glove box area.

If you can't do it right away, we will be keeping the GB open for 30 days after we start shipping , your order will be filled in order, and you cost will be $340. The full retail on these will be $399.

We didn't want to put this out there until we know we could make a good product.

I was really hoping to have a prototype ready for WCR, but it's just too close.

I wanted to thank Ken for making his NOS dash available for duplication, so the part will bear his name.

So who's game?

Just killing me to not have a viable part yet. Finally got all the metal correct. Took a lot of going back and forth, but it's all ready.

Just adding some more vent holes to the mold. Took off Tue and Wed to be able to check the fit on this as soon as we have a part. We have an early and late car to check the fit stripped down so we can address fitment on both.
But if it was easy, I guess there would already be one of these on the market already. biggrin.gif

The A&P dash is recovered with an aftermarket vinyl that will have the same issues over time in the corners and as the substructure is different can de-laminate.

The only potential drawback with mine is that dash is a late style, so the glove box area is slightly wider. I have heard that it may not be an issue, but to be sure I have a 70 standing by to test fit and verify if there are any issues.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 5 2015, 12:26 AM

The tool is done. We are going to start running material through it tomorrow. We have to "pressure" test it it and confirm flow rates, temps and a few other variables. Hope to have something to show tomorrow, or worst case Thursday. Depends on how things go tomorrow. This is the big step, if this works and I'm happy we will open the doors up as we will start to ramp up production, and open up the group buy. piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif beer3.gif beer3.gif beer3.gif beer3.gif beer3.gif beer3.gif beer3.gif 7

For those interested in the Early vs Late "issue". It's not really noticeable. You can see the pivot point of the glove box makes it so the door opens up almost unrestricted. It may limit travel slightly once it's bolted down, but it may not. I'll have to recheck once the metal is cast in.

The only area we need to point out that is different than the OEM is the bottom part line. It is hidden under the hood and is not seen while seated. It is there so I need to point it out for all so there are no surprises.

We haven't trimmed this line as there was very little flash on this seam.

The "bubbles" us see on the lower right corner (even though it's on the under side), will not be in the final product. This is part of the process we are working out still. We need to add vent holes and many need to do a few more once we get the 1st one with the metal in it. So we are still tweeking it, but this is the final stages.

The group buy will be open until I have filled all the orders.
The 1st level (greatest discount), is open until They start shipping. This does 2 things.

1- Helps us finance the large upfront costs in the production run, in return you get a better price.

2- Encourages us to get the production moving to start shipping product just as soon as we can (financially).

So level 1 could end tomorrow, but in all actuality it will probably be about 12 days. The good news is when level 2 rolls around, you will still get to save some money, just not as much. It also protects you from any increases. After we run these, we may discover the retail may need to be adjusted up to cover any unforeseen costs, or additional expenses. You will find that unless I have to my prices stay the same, I have had to increase some group buys in mid stream, but have always honored the price for those that have paid.

If the production rate holds as projected we should be able to do 7-10 per week easily, maybe more, we are working on the details of that right now. We honestly plan to have this GB wrapped up by Oct 15th, maybe sooner, could be a little later. That all depends on how many sign up, and our production rate.

Again we have incentive to be as efficient as possible in getting these made and out the door.

We really wanted to make the GB as affordable as possible, and the 2 stages reward you for helping us.

We will be doing an installation write up. We are planning to have some improvements that will make it easier to install, but can do an OEM mount system too. We need to test the 1st option, or we will do an OEM style mount.

Thanks, Mark! Would you mind autographing it for me?

You are the hero here, not me. All I did was trust you with a part I had that is in rare supply. You had the courage, knowledge, expertise, and fortitude to spend your own money to have it recreated and fulfill a huge need to our community. I can't thank you enough for what you have done to help us keep these cars alive, and I can't wholly discount the fact that you are now providing "hard-to-find parts" that could partially account for the the recent escalations in the value of our cars.

And to all of you who purchase this product, it was on a whim that I bought the master copy from Brumos back in December of 2002. PCA sent out a $100 voucher to spend at your dealer of choice. I knew that my local dealer didn't have anything that I needed, so I decided to call Brumos after having read about them in Panorama and Excellence. With all that history, I figured they probably had some things on their shelves that nobody else did. I was correct, and I am glad that things ended up the way they have. My NOS dash might not be worth as much as it was before, but I have helped Mark serve the community, and that pleases me greatly.

Wow, thanks Ken! I agree with you on Mikey. He's lifting the watermark on all of our 914s.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 7 2015, 10:27 AM

Thanks Ken,
Without your dash I couldn't have done this. As far as my helping to increase the values, probably mostly market forces there. But, imagine if there was only one source for the parts like there was 10 years ago. Back then the targa to window seals were $75 each, same with the vertical targa seals. The seals I started with in the engine compartment were about $230 for the set. I sell them for $68 for the set right now. So yes I have affected the market on the parts side. helping to keep the cost of restoration reasonable. We will be having to revise our pricing as we haven't raised out prices in years, and have grown, but it will be a number less than 10% on average.

It's been fortunate that my day job allows me to make enough money to not have to live off this company. I have been reinvesting back into it since day 1. I now have 5 guys working for me and my brother has come on board to help us to grow and manage in my absence. So it's been a fun project, and we have our eyes on some other really cool items that of this magnitude (dash top), that we will be continuing to reinvest back into. I know that there are now other larger vendors entering the market, and on some things we can't do as well, but we really do appreciate your loyalty, because every dollar you spend with us going into the next project, not buying us expensive cars to "display our products" on.

Again, it's the people here at World that have allowed me to make these for them.

Mark, I just saw this post. I hope that I have caught it in time. If you are going to stamp anything on the bottom of the dash, I would prefer that you make it "In memory of John Larson, AKA Cap'n Krusty". He and others who have passed before him have contributed greatly to this community. All I have done is offered up a part that I happened to have in my possession. I don't want or need any recognition, but I would love to see a tribute to the Cap'n.

Thanks,

The volume is good, It will not actually cover the tooling, but will get me some cash flow back into the account to do these in quantity. The ray materials, metal and the labor to do these is significant.

The actual cost did go up, and we may have to raise the price again at the retail point, but we honor our GB price and appreciate the support. I wanted to get these out there and they will sell themselves.

Actually its the metal internals we made like factory, but they are making it hard to demold. We have made some modifications to it to help and have cut the demold time from 6 hours to about 1. Still need to make a tweek or two but these are not just popping out of the mold. This is the only thing that is slowing up production. We will be starting to crank these out but if we fine tune the process before mass production

Yes I posted once we pulled the 1st plug and had anticipated that since we had duplicated the factory metal it would be just popping them out as the plug was out on less than 60 seconds. I knew the metal would add a little time to it. but it was just too rigid so we redesigned and made metal. That's what we are pulling now and it's finally getting to something that resembles production we need to be able to pull 3 a day minimum as there are 60 of you that I need to fill orders for. I saw this with the bumper tops when we started them and and have improved the process the point we can get up to 4 a day with them. They originally were 2-3 a week.

I am supposed to get the first one, and it hasn't arrived yet. I haven't been bugging him, since I don't need it right away, and I know that he is just as eager to get them out as we are to receive them. He was waiting on custom boxes, and that can take time as well.

Absolutely let Mark enjoy this weekend. I had no idea he was old enough to have a son getting married! Cool your impatient jets for a few days! Mark always delivers! I know, it's like being a kid waiting to open your presents under the Christmas tree or Hanuhkah Bush that you've been looking at and shaking for the last couple of weeks! Hang in there a little longer!

I agree on letting Mark enjoy the wedding. I really didn't expect him to even read this until next week. Just was wondering if anyone had so they could post a pic.

Ken, Matt is bringing yours with him on the plane Thursday. We are bringing a minor blem to give away and one other dash. When Matt returns this next week we will be shipping out at least the next 4. And production will go up from there.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 9 2015, 01:35 AM

Yes, taking longer than we had planned but finally getting product out. got 2 of these out today, the rest tomorrow. I may have 2 rejects, but I have to see how they cure. part of the metal issue we were dealing with, each one gets better. We plan to ship 10 next week, and keep that pace until filled, of not pick it up. We ran out of material this week, but it should be here tomorrow. I did get tracking to confirm, just depends on if we get in the afternoon or morning if we get another day of production this week.

Yes so far it's sitting on the bench still, gonna set it aside, the mold has a lot of surface area with that texture and it is difficult to remove. As the texture is pretty fine the amount of mold release we can use in minimal. We actually wound of making our own release agent on this. It's never as easy as it looks.

The DASH arrived yesterday (Friday) and I installed it this afternoon (Sat). The quality and finish is perfect. No major issues on the installation. I used metal nuts as apposed to the plastic that are used on OEM. The 2 studs behind the gauges were a bit difficult to get started. I finally put the nut in place and then put the dash in place and the studs were in the right alignment with the nuts, I pushed from the top and threaded them - took a while to figure a solution. The rest was straight forward.

Looks fantastic and I am very happy. Money well spent.

Posted by: 76-914 Oct 25 2015, 09:30 AM

re: starting those 2 nuts.

Take a thin strip (18-22ga appx 1"x4") of metal and drive a nail thru it about 1/2" from the end. The nail hole leaves a cone shape that helps center the nut. Place the nut on top of the ^ and slip the nut in place. Rotate the nut with the end of a screwdriver or ice pick while pushing up on the nut with the metal strip. Takes about 2 min's this way. You can spread the area just a bit if the gap or space (that the nut slips into) is uneven.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 25 2015, 10:19 AM

We've started tapering the studs to make the nuts easier to start. Also included are the nuts. It seems the metal nuts are easier to install.

Received mine yesterday! This is the most exciting achievement in parts reproduction our cars could receive. I hope you all realize how important this part is for all of us. Since I developed my first dash crack over the winter several years ago I have been hunting down parts cars and stripping the un-cracked dash pads out of them. I changed three of them. I had a perfect pad in 7 of 9 for one winter storage. I found it cracked this spring. I installed my last dash the week I sold the car. there are two kinds of 914 dash pads. Ones that are cracked and ones that will crack. We now have an option instead of staring at that crack wondering how long it will be before another one comes along... sawzall-smiley.gif

Very happy!

Needed to post an update.
We are shipped on our 1st 1/3 of the dashes, we would have been at least 2/3 done, but we sped up the process and a major time issue is the cure time. We were up to 3 a day unfortunately when we pulled them early, the force required to de-mold these caused a separation internally. The defect wasn't noticeable until it sat for about 24 hrs. As we packed and shipped right away we got about a dozen out that were defective. We have replaced these and are back on the production. I will update the list tuesday after we ship this next batch and drop emails to all with the anticipated delivery time for each. We had initially hoped this was an isolated incident but found they were pretty consistent.
We have been able to remedy the situation and get the production back up to 7-10 a week, but that's the best we will be able to do.

Thanks to all for your patience.
Mark

Its straight forward. 13MM plastic nuts you hope move by hand. You have to open everything up in front and follow the nuts all the way down the line. A couple tight areas that really suck....

Side question: are the old dashes from these cars of any value to anyone? I imagine not but know some people are sticklers for original parts versus repros. I'm not looking to sell it - it's yours free - but if someone could use it then it could stay out of my landfill.

If it's not cracked sure. But until now there were two kinds of 914 dash tops. Tops that are cracked and tops that will crack.

It's another reason I stated emails sent to all, so if you didn't get one, you should contact me. A few were orders that didn't complete the transaction so payment was never received. We got those squared away, at least all we have heard from.

What is the current backlog shipping date for these dash tops at this time?

I've got the money ready, but need the delivery to fit a specific window....before Jan 13 here in Oregon.

Thanks

Was wondering the same thing. Email said it would ship on the 5th, but nothing since. Anyone else received theirs recently?

Not worried, just wondering.

Dan

Yes these are about 10 days off schedule, but we are getting to the end of the list finally. These will all be complete in the next 20 days. Yeah!

Finally installed mine today! Amazing how much it changes the look of the car.

As a note, the plastic nuts don't seem to work so well on the non-factory studs in the dash. I found just using steel nuts made the task of starting the nuts possible. I could not get a single plastic nut to start on the studs. Could be operator error!

But still a huge improvement.

Is yours one of the early ones? Mine is. I sent a note to Mark noting that it was a true PITA to get the nuts started, quite easy to cross-thread them. And then when you try to back them out to restart, they pull the studs out of the dash panel. Grrrrrr...!

He noted that they are now tapering the plastic studs to make it easier to start the nuts (see the thread on the mis-shipped pencil sharpener) and that they are using Loc-Tite on the plastic studs in the dash. I recommend that for anyone with the earlier, non-tapered ones.
