Hi all. I've been a member a while though not the most active one.

I'm doing a frame-off restoration on a 76 and I've been on the fence for a while now about whether or not to keep what I think was a sales floor add on to the car.

The project car had side trim on it when I bought it and it looks like it's been there since day one.

Would you keep it or not?


Here is a pic of the type of trim I'm talking about. The car isn't a 914 obviously but the trim is very similar.

Absolutely 100% positively and unequivocally NO. Lose the trim. Don't put it on. Never. Not a chance. Nope. It sucks.

I'd also change the avatar, unless you are cruising for West Hollywood members.

Nope. If you are taking votes then mark me down as a NO. One of the things that I like the most about the 914 is the simplicity and clean lines. No scoops or bulges, just simple. However, it's your car and you should do what fits YOUR tastes.

Thanks for the input, I've been thinking they need to go. I'm not a fan of the scoops or fender flares either.


And Cuda thanks for suggesting I may like to spend my spare parts searching time cruising West Hollwood for tranny. I'll upload another "straight" away.

That trim could be purchased in any FLAPS back in the day, so it could easily have been added by one of the owners... Either way, I wouldn't go there, but as mentioned above, it's your car.

My 69 Pontiac came with that trim from the factory & the F & R side marker lights were integrated into them too, so it depends on the make & model - which I can't tell from the pic. Many cars from the 60's & 70's & 80's had them as base or optional.

I'd look for some original sales docs &/or window sticker for this car - or look on evil-bay for an old dealer sales brochure on that make/model to see if it was an option.

If you're trying to do a faithful resto, then you'll want to know if it was a dealer or owner/FLAPS add-on - or original base or optional equipment.

If you're doing resto mod - then do what looks best to you.

The discussion of the Avatar reminds me of a thread on the BRZ forums where a guy was showing his pictures of a blown transmission.
Everybody knows what "car porn pictures" are...

If it came that way from the dealer, and the original sales receipt documents that, then Yes. By all means keep it.

If you can document the original purchase, the opinions above make good sense leave it off.

Unless you’re going to use it as a daily driver and park it amongst other cars, I’d agree that this is a good time to remove it…

My '74 had the trim riveted on and left 24 holes when I took it off. It was the first thing I did to the car. The holes were welded closed before paint. If you weld your holes be sure to protect the glass or roll up the window. If not you might be posting a WTB in the classified forum like I did...

Thanks for all the input.

My gut is to remove them as I've never seen them on another 914.


Also, the pic I posted is just an example of what the trim looks like and not of the 914. I realize there may have been some confusion there.


I'll post some progress picks when I can. The motor is out of the 914 and completely disassembled. One piston skirt was broken and it motor really needs some love.

My opinion is lose the trim, modify your avatar to show you driving the 914 in traffic dressed like that. Try to get some passerbys reaction....
