914World.com _ 914World Garage _ HELP: Can We Rally Around and Help Michele?

Posted by: Eric_Shea May 19 2015, 12:15 PM

Hey Gang,

This looks like one this group can (and should) sink their teeth into.

Michele had her teener stolen 8 years ago and it was recovered recently (a little worse for wear).

I've offered a set of calipers up...

If you have any parts languishing in a dark dank corner of your garage or shop... perhaps the Karma Wizard may shine favorably on you if you helped Michele.

We haven't had a good feel good story here in a while and this one is a keeper:

what parts does she need?

looks like it needs more physical help than parts. Probably a good BBQ restoration party is needed

Posted by: McMark May 19 2015, 12:38 PM

I have good used parts I'm throwing in a box:

Visor clips left right and center.
Targa Top Release handle - Roof Latch Passenger side upper right front

Posted by: Andyrew May 19 2015, 01:23 PM

I've got a rusty rear trunk lid I can probably salvage if she's missing one, however it looks to me like she just needs bodywork done. I can volunteer a day of my time to do bodywork on the car if we want to get a party going.

I have a headlight motor assy. on my parts car to throw in but it is a 71. Let me know if that is compatible. (Dont know if it works but should be complete)
I also think I have a reaqr pad light (new) I got from Pelican a while back I am not going to use.
I will dig into the boxes and find it and get the headlight motor pulled this week and get a pick of it for you. beerchug.gif

Posted by: McMark May 19 2015, 02:04 PM

It appears to me that she just need the linkage pieces. The headlight assembly itself is there, and her email implies the motor is there.

EDIT: Is she a member?

Are you sure the car wasn't abandoned in her driveway when she moved. Any pictures of the car showing condition prior to it being stolen?

Posted by: Mueller May 19 2015, 05:16 PM

I could only offer some time and wrenching on it...however the wife might not understand why I'd be working on somebody elses car and not on my own! smile.gif

I don't have any of these parts but I did tell her I would help out at a build party.

She is a very nice lady and definitely an enthusiast.

I took an e-brake handle and a door handle sleeve(?) over to the shop today and checked out the car. Probably the most serious issues is how badly bitten it is by rust. Rear trunk lid is probably history as well as the front lid. The cowl at the windshield is also swiss cheese. The husband said rust at the hell hole goes all the way through. They could really use sheet metal repair parts and the expertise to cut and weld. The drivers seat has been shredded. I didn't even realize there was a wire structure in the headrest on these cars. I live a few blocks away from his shop and offered any help I can give.
This will definitely be a labor of love.

Posted by: Old Yella May 21 2015, 12:03 AM

Think she stole my repair list. left it on the kitchen table this morning and when I got home it was gone.
Now if I had a spare rubber kit laying around what would I do with it?

I know im cynical and a jerk but I just wonder why 2 seemingly well off people, one who owns an auto repair shop, are soliciting donations for parts to repair a car that their insurance probably paid for years ago.

I don't think it is her soliciting donations. Seems like guys here just want to help them get it back on the road. It's a nice story & sounds like she is a nice lady. If you don't have one of the parts to contribute no biggie. They will be putting plenty of money into bringing it back to life. This is just another time when our community is trying to help someone. It's not about the parts or the money confused24.gif

Posted by: sixnotfour May 21 2015, 08:49 AM

well I agree , sort of. but the 914 members you mention are selling things in the classifieds, my suggestion is buy their parts with a gratuitous shipping and handling fee.... Or send em a get well card ..life is not that complicated..at this stage...

as for parts for this person ...she can have em if I got em ....why because Im throwing em out.. there are way more parts than cars...

If I ever ask for a part..I hope it is reciprocating...

It would be nice if she did join up and share her 914 enthusiasm...

She needs parts because she is not experienced at sourcing them and it is a very old car.

Her getting her car back is a feel good story all its own. Our helping her get it back to its former glory is a testament to what this community is made of.

I wonder if, when you're driving down the road you wouldn't pull over and help someone in a 2015 Jaguar but you would pull over for someone in a 74 Pinto? Why does one person deserve human kindness while another should fend for themselves?

Be more human... If not, just be less opinionated. dry.gif

Great 914 story! Who are the terminal members? (only if they want us to know) I have been out of the loop here. Sometimes people ask for help. Sometimes others are compelled to reach out and do something to make life a little better for someone else. No one is making anyone help. I say find a cause that can make a difference to you and go with it. One thing I caution about though. Never push yourself onto someone's life unless they are a willing recipient. Some people just want their privacy. Respect that.

Send your free extra parts to me I don't have a sad story yet for sympathy but I will soon, I am still searching the Internet for one!

Can we get this back on the rails now? Remember this could be you someday. Play nice kids. Like mom told you, If you don't have something nice to say move along. These kinds of things are not for everyone. Thanks for stepping up with this Eric.

Posted by: Eric_Shea May 24 2015, 02:19 PM

I came back and thought I would be impressed.

I'm not. Wow. Things have changed here. sad.gif

I thought it would be a fun way to show an outsider how we (used to) care about the cars and the people that drive them.

Posted by: Dr Evil May 25 2015, 09:15 PM

I got nothing on that list, and I am not local, but if I can help I am interested. If Eric says things are on the up and up, that is good enough for me.

Posted by: Old Yella May 25 2015, 09:45 PM

Geez, I hope my tong in cheek comment didn't start the tirade of negativity.

I made the comment about the rubber kit because I am a third of a way through buying the whole kit myself and the on going cost of buying parts for a 40 year old car next to other necessities is a challenge as most of you know. While I'm at it thanks to all the people who sold me parts through the forum, phoenix swap and the Riverside guys for their great swap meets.

I have checked what I have and I don't have anything I can help her with if I did I would send it. Most of my stuff is old crapola which I took off my car and is unusable--god knows why I have kept it.

Good luck with your search Michele.

Posted by: bigkensteele May 25 2015, 09:55 PM

All I got is one question. Would Howard, Al, Lapuwali, and all those who left us too soon want us to help these people?

I would have most likely lost interest in my car and kept my 911 had it not been for this place and the people that make it. Instead, I sold the 911 and spend more time here than anywhere else. It isn't because we are cool, because we aren't. It is because the vast majority of the frequent contributors here are honest to goodness great people who happen to like a particular quirky little car, but above all else are exceptionally welcoming and compassionate. With the exception of my family, of all the communities of which I am a member, be it my neighborhood, my church, my office, etc., there is not one that compares to 914world in its acceptance of new members, its compassion for others, and its reverence for civic duty.

My wife never understood why I spent so much time here until I showed her the responses to a post I made when we had to have our dog put down. The thread ended up being 3 or 4 pages. She started crying as she realized just how great this group of people is. Nobody asked how much we made or if we needed help buying a new dog - they were just there for us.

So, yes, I will help however I can.

Posted by: Chris H. May 26 2015, 06:44 AM

To clarify, my post was an attempt to add a little distraction/levity to the mix like we used to back in the old days... I deviated from the standard "look, kittens!" with a pic.

It's been a tough couple of weeks. Lot of bad news about people we care about. I don't have any of the parts listed, but would donate if I did since people have given me MANY parts free of charge over the years.

Is there an updated list of what's still needed?

Hi this is Michele. I am trying to engage this site this is my first attempt. I am most grateful to all of you who have been saying you are willing to rallying on my behalf and my car offering help and parts. The car at this point is being checked through by the mechanic that set her up for me in the 1980's. I should know more about her health next week sometime. In the meantime any body parts that you are willing send my way that Mark listed can be sent to:1010 -17th Avenue Suite A Santa Cruz CA 95062 with the title AuCiel on them. My number is 831.419.9997 I would be more than happy to speak with any of you directly should you have suggestions or questions. Again my heart is filled with gratitude as a result of your kindness.

As you can probably see from the posts already in this thread, we can get rowdy and squabble now and then, but it really is a great group of people. One thing that you will find is that this place is a wealth of knowledge. The search button is your friend if you take the time to learn its power, but don't ever hesitate to ask a question. It will get answered, but I hope that you are OK with sarcasm!

Hi Ken,
Just trying to figure out how to respond and post...? Yes it appears my car has triggered some emotions out there. Just to be 'very clear' I never asked for any free anything. That support came from the huge heart & kindness of Mark without my knowledge. It blew me away and brought me to tears that anyone would reach out to all of you and so very grateful to those that have responded with their offers and caring. Now if I could just sort out how to respond to them?? Feeling like I don't have my sea legs yet.... Aaarrgh!!

Is it Talk Like a Pirate Day already? I missed it!

I should have mentioned that bad apples really do get sorted here. They either go away on their own, or in extreme cases are exiled. I can tell you without question the the guys who expressed concerns earlier fall into that "great group of people", so don't hold any hard feelings.

As for learning how to navigate ye' way around these seas, just ask if you are not sure how to get around. Couple of tips off the top of my head. The little orange box next to the thread title when you are in the Garage (or any of the forums) will take you to the newest post that you have not read. Very useful. You can subscribe to threads that you find interesting. Just go to the top of any page on the thread and click the Options button and then select Track this Topic. It will email you whenever somebody posts a reply to the topic. Ask questions - we can tell by your number of posts and member number that you are new, and slack will be granted. Once you have your "sea legs", you begin to catch grief, which is most always light-hearted.

You and your car have a great story, and hopefully we can help make it even better!

Thank you. Very grateful for your support. Michèle

Hi Michelle! I spoke to you at the swap meet. I had the crazy Audi powered 914. Welcome to our motley crew. I hope you have thick skin for all the trash talking around here. beerchug.gif

Hi Mike! Yes it's all good. But appreciate your sticking by me. Love your 914 very impressive. Working through my process with the car. Got good news today the engine seems sound. Woohoo. Brakes are in need so that's next then tires then drive her a little to see how things hold up. The rust is a big deal probably the worst of it. Especially around the battery side. The cowel and front fenders are pretty sad as well. So trying to organize the next step to finding and fixing those. Best I guess to get her to Mark in Sonoma right? But driving that far is probably not realistic. So much to do. But I am motivated. Especially with all the support of 914 world folks. Grateful!!! Michèle

Thank you for your support and parts. You made our day! You are right on on the body assessment it's a little frightening to me. But I am determined to do this for my little girl. It's not her fault that she was mistreated. Just glad she's home to help put it right. Best to you. Michèle

I wonder if, when you're driving down the road you wouldn't pull over and help someone in a 2015 Jaguar but you would pull over for someone in a 74 Pinto? Why does one person deserve human kindness while another should fend for themselves?

Yup, a spot weld cutter. Or for those who are less concerned with the actual pieces themselves, a Sawz-All. The cutter is a lot more work, but a lot less likely to damage stuff while using it.

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 3 2015, 01:38 PM

Cutting the fenders out is best left as a last case resort. Its much easier and better if they are patched and bodywork is performed, unless they have been in a serious accident or they are extremely rusty.

While I don't have the parts you need, there is one that makes me wonder:

Mag Caps all four black Porsche emblem - If you have Fuchs or Mahle wheels, they were never black ... all "chrome" or shiny metal. Emblems would have been added by a PO.

If you have aftermarket wheels, they were black plastic.

Can't tell from the pics which wheels you have.

Posted by: euro911 Jun 22 2015, 01:55 AM

First pic in the thread - looks like they are early style white Rivieras (maybe even Formula-Vs) confused24.gif

I've got a tan passenger seat, minus the bottom pad, and the side bolsters are starting to split, but the all important center section looks OK. Also a new rear trunk seal, sent to me by mistake years ago, I guess it's time to pass it on...
