914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Stupid Heads Question

Posted by: bd1308 Feb 21 2005, 09:25 AM

Is it at all possible to bolt on a set of 1.7 or 1.8 heads to my 2.0? I'm not looking for power, just reliability, and I have a budget

Posted by: Bleyseng Feb 21 2005, 09:57 AM

1.8l heads will fit, the 1.7l heads will only fit the small cylinders (90mm) unless you have them cut to fit the larger 93mm and up size cylinders. The 1.8l 914 have decent valve sizes too.

if you have fuel injection, the intake runners are 3 bolt on the 2.0 and 4 bolt on the 1.7/1.8

so what if i filled up the center hole and drilled two new holes to match the 1.8 head? or what if i went with a 1.8 intake runner set......

The tube diameter is smaller on the 1.7/1.8 runners (problems in mating to the plenum), sheet metal is different..you would need 1.7/1.8 cylinder covers (different spark plug location).

And, just a stretch, not sure if the runner length is the same.

Can be done, but.....

Need a set of 2.0 heads?

Posted by: Mueller Feb 21 2005, 11:33 AM

actually the 1.8 and 2.0 runners are the same size, the location of how they mate to the intake plenum is different, but they can be "tweaked" pretty easily to fit

Posted by: bd1308 Feb 21 2005, 12:32 PM

i need the cheap 2.0 heads that dont exist anywhere...and never did for that matter.

I have a set of bus 2.0 heads that are in nice condition. Not sure what shipping to Kentuckey would run. I'd like to get $150 for them, and I'll include the sheet metal for them. 2.0 bus heads are like 914 1.8 heads, so the plugs are located differently than the 914 2.0. You shouldn't need to fill the center hole, just drill the 2 extra holes in the intake runner flanges. Some aftermarket carb intakes have holes for both setups, and I've never heard of any problems. PM me if you're interested.

I've done this.

Use 1.8 manifolds, you have to cut them down and tweek them slightly to line up with the 2.0 plenum.

It works but 2.0 heads are better.

If you use 1.8 heads you want the 914 "S" heads.

Isn't the 2.0 bus head - FI runners a direct bolt on, no?

Posted by: Mark Henry Feb 21 2005, 02:09 PM

Nope 4 bolt intake and the 2.0 bus head has the worst exhaust port of them all barf.gif

Posted by: bd1308 Feb 21 2005, 02:12 PM

yes but it's better than me worrying if i'll shoot another plug out of the head. I hate worryin about dumb stuff like that....I just need good gas milage and okay speed. I do 75-80 max. did 90 once in TN. I'm not racing, I just want a smooth engine without the wierd sounds (hissing, popping, etc)

Posted by: Travis Neff Feb 21 2005, 02:55 PM

I meant the bus intake runners bolted up to 1.8 heads, and matching the 2.0 plenum without any additional futzing

Posted by: Mark Henry Feb 21 2005, 03:09 PM

Nope again smile.gif

The 2.0 bus runners are the same length as the 1.8 runners and have a smaller tube to boot.

If you just blew a plug out, the hole can be helicoiled. Even heliarced up and retapped for that matter.

Do you need one or two heads?

I need 2 of them. I dont feel confident enough to drill and tap and weld on things that are worth $350 as cores. The left one spit a plug out and is scaring the hell out of me and the right one has the exhaust stud threads pulled so my 914 sounds like a VW....which isn't too spectacular. Actually, it kinda sounds liek a old ford or something. VWs are more twangy. So SLITS, the answer is two.

I would say, find a good welder, get the spark plug hole and exhaust stud welded up.

Then get a few drills and taps and fix the rest yourself...

If you are nice to the welder and explain what you are trying to do, he might even walk you through the drilling and tapping procedure to give you some confidence....

You wont learn till you try....if all else fails, weld them up again and try again....

they will be worth the same if they are welded or not, possibly even more if they are welded up already.....

Hey Dude
Hang on a minute....
My resto started with a valve adjust, if you think you can get away with a quick head job, pun intended, your wrong.
Arm yourself with some materials that is needed like studs, or step studs, inserts (not heli coils). Check around some local shops, I love to do this type of work at the shop and if someone came in with all the hard to find -(time not charged on phone and wrong hardware) parts I would charge him a strait deal, probably would come out to half the price of a head. Depending on how the other studs are.
Try it ! This is your best bang for the buck, worse comes to worse if all the exhaust studs just shits the bed, you still need heads.

ps...your avtar is much better, the other one looks spooky

I suppose....but if my 914 is my daily driver, I'd rather have some 2.0 bus heads (cheap but good ones) and save the 2.0 914 heads for a rainy day......seems to me thats the best deal....If i got bus heads, i'd honestly probably fix the 914 heads and then sell them perhaps. I need money (what a cliche')

Joe, was the avatar thing directed to me? If it was i'd kinda have to agree....I like this one much better...besides on the last avatar, where was the rest of the lady?

Britt, Why do keep asking for advice, and then ignore the advice you get? The advice you have gotten here is good, no, great advice. Using bus heads is a stupid idea. Like rich said, don't be afraid to try something new. Its how we learn. I fucked up a 283 in my 57 chevy (first attempt at a motor rebuild at 16 years old) when I put the rod caps on backwards. I learned the hard way, but you don't have to! You can't screw up those heads any worse than they already are by drilling and tapping.

Hey
Ya Dude at you, but I was talk about the pic that I asume is you, creepy
And I still say fix heads on car, save money for rebiuld. Just the extra money and mucho time, you would save on modifying tin, whoops missing a part, would pay for the repair and no down time. Do you want to risc taking apart your motor before summer ? I always start in Nov.
Good luck
WBR
Joe
