914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WTR: In a Suby Conversion

Gents,

I think I need a ride in a Subaru swapped conversion to help push me over the motivational hump. idea.gif

IPB Image

I am thinking an EZ30R or an EJ turbo series motor. ( don't have the skills or motivation to do out of the box like Mike or what Andrew is starting)

I came from the Subaru world before 914's, so it's a warm & fuzzy.

Any bay area folks have a running swap I could take a ride in sometime this summer?

Thanks!

Matt

I added a pole for your opinion ( cuz they are fun )

I've driven Fiids 2.0(EJ?) turbo years ago and loved it....at the time I had my '91 964 with 3.6 and I think his 914 was just as quick...very impressed!

I think he still had a the stock 914 gearbox in it, I would imagine it would be even better with a Subaru gearbox.

How about an Audi... Or... cutting a hole in the floor like Flinstones... biggrin.gif

Posted by: matthepcat Jun 3 2015, 06:29 PM

No Audi....unless I could somehow make the 2.5 TTRS engine work...lol

Posted by: Andyrew Jun 3 2015, 06:42 PM

Whats wrong with Audi? Keep it in the family!!! smile.gif

The greater and greater availability of subaru conversion parts is hard to pass up....

What are your HP goals?

Posted by: matthepcat Jun 3 2015, 07:03 PM

Well, I would be happy with 300 wheel HP ( but I know I don't need that in a 914)

EJ stock pistons are pretty weak..so pushing over 350 means I would probably need to go forged.....then the motor build spirals with (while I am in there)

A little less than that feels quick in my Subaru wagon.

With an EJ motor, it's as easy as injectors, maybe a Mitsu 18g or small gt turbo and a tune.

To be honest Subaru tuning is so cheap now, I don't know why more conversion guys don't take advantage of it.

I'd be HAPPY to accommodate you but I can't drive my car. Bad back, so for about eight months now I can't get into it, then it hurts to sit in it and it's pretty much impossible to get out of. So it just sits there and we're both sad. Irony is that my son's 914/WRX is here too, right next to mine, also waiting. So how soon do you want to do it? Can it wait a while?

DB,

Sweet offer. As these things go, I never rush. Your car was the first thread that got my wheels turning about Subaru possibility.

I am also happy to take the sadness of looking at your nice car in exchange for cash smile.gif

I've ridden in DB's car and it was very quick! I believe he has the 2.0. I would pick the 2.5 but go with the stock ecu and a COBB access port. Plus I think the DBW option is cool. Ive been wondering if the (15)WRX trans, which is a 6 speed and already a cable shifter is compatible like all the other subaru trans. Lots of idea's just no $$$$

Well that rules out the v6 options unless you want to put a little nitrous, supercharger, or turbo.. No?

What type of power delivery do you want? Instant or do you want some lag? I think thats what will be your deciding factor.. If you want 300+whp and instant power your probably looking at the slightly worked over 2.5.. Want a little bit of lag then the 2.0.. OK with say 250 wheel probably the 3.6 is the way to go.. (You could always put a rear turbo on it later and go mad with it..)

Or am I reading this wrong?

I agree with the stock ECU. Lots of aftermarket support and you can buy basic tunes from professional tuners for like $100 that work with a Cobb tuner (which I own alwready)

I didn't know the 15' was a cable shift...sweet.

I was considering the Australian supercharger options for the EZ motors here: http://www.raptorsc.com.au/subaru4.html

It would take a custom s/c mount and a new belt length (I am sure guru Mike could help me with that). I like that idea because 6 sound with instant power at 300+.

Much cheaper and easier to get turbo power though, and lag is pretty easy to minimize if you are not chasing big dyno numbers. The EJ motors are also lighter than the EZ's.

Rear turbo is not a bad idea, but I believe you have to swap out Pistons to run anything over 7-10 PSI. (Get compression ratio down)

EJ's have so many off the shelf parts, it's hard to say no.

I have the ejt 2.0 in my car making 240 h.p at 12 pounds of boost . With a boost controler can easy make around 260 . Motor wiegths less than the original 4 due to its all aluminum block .

What's with you Central Valley people getting $900 engines?

Don't use a manual boost controller, get it tuned for more boost. Are you running a stock TD04 turbo?

You can run 15-16 PSI on the TD04 pretty safely....or find some 06+ WRX or factory STI injectors and get a VF39, VF43 to bump up to 330 with a tune.

Well I got to ride in a beautiful one a few weeks back, but with a 901 trans.

It was one of the first 2.5L WRX engine swaps done by renegade.

Power was all over the place, but to be honest the 901 ( which was one of the best shifting ones I have ever driven), was still clunky.

I also feel that the stock ratios do not take advantage of the WRX torque curve.

Still excited to get a ride in a full Subaru & trans swap. smile.gif

Coming to McMarks BBQ this Saturday?

Wondering if any conversions will show up?

I know of one that's gonna be at RRC but it's a bit far for you to go unless you've already planned for it. They pull like crazy and the shifting is what we've come to expect from driving a Subaru- tight and precise, definitely worth the cash and time for a sweet setup. I'm cheating- putting the automatic in my conversion... then a manual after I get one set up the way I want.
