ATLANTA, February 23, 2005 — Porsche will be expanding its range of vehicles with the introduction of a new sports car based on the Boxster series in the 2006 model year. Positioned and priced between the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S, the new two-seat sports car, named the Cayman S, is aggressively styled to reflect its enhanced handling and more powerful engine. At the same time, highly efficient space utilization makes it one of the most practical sports cars in its class.
The Cayman S joins the Carrera, Boxster, and Cayenne, model designations that are already rich in tradition. It derives its name from the smallest of crocodiles, the caiman, which is known to be swift and nimble. With its more powerful 295 bhp, 3.4-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine mounted in the middle of its chassis, the new fixed-roof model reflects the strength and agility of its namesake perfectly and is capable of providing driving pleasure in its purest form.
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 250 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for its 204 U.S. and Canadian dealers. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service.

918-6 woulda been better...
pete
sounds nice and the icon-ery looks awesome
Cayman
Like the car - not the name.
Yep, Cayman
The car...
pete
hard not to read that as "Gayman"
the should have at least spelled it Caiman...
oh well, like the car.
Stupid name.
Right up there with New Coke.
someone please hire me and pay me well so I can go out and get one of these cars!

Best photos I could find in a hurry:

And an interesting teaser for potential customers (I guess the 914 demographic wasn't on their radar )

Cheers!

With a name like that,it sure wouldn't inspire me to run right out and buy one.
I wonder how Schwartzenegger would respond to that name?
Ron
Porsche should stick to number designations.
What is wrong with calling it Boxster Coupe? It is what it is...
The car is kind of interesting.
Looks like some huge blind spots though...

What's the difference? Same old tired styling they've had since the 70's. It's cool that the car is high HP mid-motored but get a stylist to come up with something new.
Am I the only one that find it ugly? Maybe it is the color. It sure look just like another 911 to me.
Cayenne, Cayman, the next one will be called Cayak
Back looks a little like a Chrysler Crossfire.
Wonder how the engine is accessed?

First off, it looks a lot like an Audi TT.
A little manipulation, and you could have a Canam logo.

I wonder if the beer tray on the back is retractable?
Before I could defile that badge on my own, someone has to spoil the fun for me.
GayMan.
"Slip into the new Gayman, and experience the tight handling"
(disclaimer: not poking fun of the gay man or his lifestyle )
sounds like a croc to me ...

What, is Porsche afraid people these days don't like model Numbers for their cars...they have to have a 'name' like Pepper-wagon... |
When I first saw these pictures of the Boxster Coupe, I thought - why would anyone buy a 911 when you can buy this instead? But then newer shots I have seen do not look nearly as good. I'm sure it will look great once it comes out.
Demick
this looks like it's a bit funky. I wonder if it's hiding something and may not be part of the car.

Not an official Porsche pic. Looks like the standard camo crap car companies use to disguise a car during developement.
Ugly looking thing. Would have to see it in the flesh. A hatchback? Don't they know that people in the USA don't buy hatchbacks (I have, but most don't). I guess they saw how the Z3 coupe and the Mercedes c230 set sales records and they figured that they needed a hatch on the damn thing. Does the TT Coupe have a hatch?
Hate the name too. What's wrong with numbers? I guess the 900 series of numbers is all but used up.
Overall, I give it 2 blahs!

Hey Pete, Did you start this thread on any other BBS? Would be interesting to gauge the reaction of other Porsche guys.
The layout of the drivetrain is cool but the styling is boring. My feeling about the car seems to be the norm here.. Yaaann
The 911 guys may think it's cool. It will finally give them a 911 looking car that will compete with out 30 year old chassis.
If it's named after an alligator, why's it spelled like a group of islands best known as a haven for tax evaders? The Cap'n

ugly design. the crossfire/new beetle design cues make it look like they're playing car-design catch-up with other companies. not original and not a great addition to the stable, imho. the name is terrible.
now, if it were boxy, with a profile that looked like a picnic basket with front and rear lids open, that would be something...

I like the illustration in Demick's post better than the pictured car, but maybe, as already suggested, it's cloaked.
I read somewhere, maybe Automobile Mag., that Porsche already considered the track performance advantage of the mid-engine "Boxster Coupe" over the 911, so they intentionally reduced the power of the "Boxster Coupe" engine.
Wasn't that the similar reasoning for abandoning the 914? Because it was kicking the 911's butt on the race track?
It ain't easy being a middie
Better spy shots here:

it looks like everything after the doors is cloaked. I wouldn't be too surprised if it had a 914/Carrera GT style look to the ass end.

Poor Aaron!
Rick, I didn't post it elsewhere. I just like you guys... And who else can relate to mid-engined madness?
Actually, all of these other spy "shots" are way off. The red car -- while pretty appealing, actually -- was an early stab while the black car was when they were still busy cloaking the whole rear end and trying to post up with those fake 911 exhausts...
The green car's secret lies in those "nubs" that are pointed out above, there is definitely a surprise under there.
I think the coupe *may* get flying butresses and one big-ass deckild a la Ferrari 355, though how that fits in with Porsche's bragging about lots of storage space is beyond me...there is only so much room above the Boxster motor.
pete
it doesn't matter what it looks like in Europe unless you live there.
i'll defer judgement until i see the US car, with the US bumper height, wheels, lights, and mirrors.

I'm sure the "model designation delete" option will be exercised by many a new owner.
I was all hot on the idea.... then I saw that it was a hatchback... err.... pickup truck.
This is the thing that I don't do, hatchbacks.
It's ok Aaron, I am 32% gay, we can still hang out.

i think it looks pretty good!!

Yes, that looks better. Not helping us, but yep.
Nissan calls their Boxster coupe '350Z'.
M
looks more like an elise now.....
i like it!!!!
No Aaron, it doesn't... the picture does... nothing has REALLY changed..
M
Does anyone have anything positive to say about this car? I'm honestly pumpedthat Porsche is coming out with a Boxster coupe, me thinks its gonna be a pretty little thing. Me thinks its going to be my prescious.
But maybe i'm a bit biased, and maybe i'm a lot bit biased. I even think the 924's are pimp lokkin cars, so maybe i'm so biased towards Porsches that i'm off the deep end.

German for Coupe = BMW M Coupe. Lots of space under that wagon back too

So they named it a C7 to keep it in front of the Vette, and it's a hatchback.
Nothing wrong with that, comes from a long line of highly respected hatchbacks... the gremlin, the pacer, the pinto, the pinto wagoneer grand pinto, the family truckster... the international harvester..

if it looks like the red car it'll be a big seller.
More recycled Coke cans and 2 liter bottles...
And its got a gay name and a friggin radiator.
I'd rather have a 356.

Lessee, "positioned between the Boxster S & the 911"= bout $65K....give or take. That happens to be the estimated price
of the new Z06......the souless sonabitch that retains it's warrantee iff'n ya track it and don't have a fruitcake name.
Tough choice.
How much for an Elise ?
Hey Pete:
Thanks for the info.
It's a beautiful machine & will probably sell. My take on Porsche, marketing is screwed up. They only look for short term $$ results. They are not putting down a future base for the next 5-10 years.
They don't understand the US market, Why, why would they put a name like Cayman (you hear what our guys are saying, Gaycar) on this car?? Why not stick to a Boxstr. #'s.
Why not sell this car at an affordable price & below the Bxstr. Bring young future generations into the Porsche fold. The younger generation are moving into Ricer cars because of $$'s.
My other gripe with Porsche. Everything is an option & extra. They have hundreds of extra's that should be standard. My wife's new car is not going to be German because of this price gouging. Another gripe with Porsche, Their cars require lots of maintenance $$ when taken to the dealer.
I must be getting old because the more I have to spend the more value I want for my money.
Enough said & my 2-cents worth on the Cayman.
Tom
BTW
I am looking to buy a used Bxstr. when I find the right one.
The Corvette at Boxster money debate is tired, dating back to the fifties. If a base Carrera is $69K and a 987S is $53K, I think we're gonna see this car in the $57-61K range, which is below the Z06 -- which I admit is bad ass.
But so was the last Z06. An *amazing* track car that just wasn't as much fun as a plain Boxster on a backroad, because it's like piloting a sea of fiberglass with a fantastic V8 lost under its too-wide hood. Out on a track, which is really wide, the car rocked. And, for top performance per dollar, the new Z06 will continue to be the car to beat -- if that's all that matters.
If I could afford something like that, I'd much rather have a used 993TT or 996TT. But then I'm an idiot and would probably build the world's trickest 914-4 instead.
I used to really be critical of Porsche strategy, but it's obviously been paying off since 1994 and -- names be damned -- the current cars are very, very good. Even that stupid pepper-wagon flat blows everything else like it away in terms of driving dynamics (yes, I know it is f-ugly...). The X5 4.8is feels like a Volvo Cross Country wagon by comparison.
I love old Porsches , love the new ones (so long as there's a clutch pedal and a hope of future depreciation) ...and hate the names.

A "base price" Porsche? Anybody ever see one of these?......talk about rare.....
I know a guy that had a 73 911S Sportomatic....one of 7.
The base price jobbie would be more rare....but not worth near as much
JP's right: base-price Porsches ARE super rare.
I remember seeing a black Boxster 2.7 back in 2000 or 2001 at Stead and tripping out -- it didn't even have floor mats (ridiculous that they are optional!!!!!!!!!!!). It was $42,100 plus destination.
Never seen another one, though Sonnen has a yellow C-GT stripper right now... does that count?!?
pete
BTW: Did we ever come to a conclusion on how many 914 Sportos were made (I thought it was four-ish) and if any were -4s?
