914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 2.0 Alloy Wheels... painted or not?

Posted by: Brent Feb 23 2005, 06:35 PM

"Appearance package" FUCHS. You know what I mean, the black background or the clean alloy. I've notice more cars which originated in CA have the black paint, whereas others around the states, and elsewhere, are virginal.

If there is another thread on this (not) new topic please provide, cause I couldn't find anything using the search feature.

1. Was there an option on the new cars?
2. What is your preferrence on reconditioning? (black paint, virgin, polished, other)

My 74 came (from previous PO) with the Black wheels, sail panels, center console.

the original finish was satin & machined alluminum. The painted black were repos and I would bet more than a couple dealers who wanted them to look more like 911 fuchs.

Posted by: redshift Feb 23 2005, 06:39 PM

they come stock with a not quite black background, and that part is machined in appearance.

The dealer had a choice as to where the big hole for the ant. (l or r) which crappy radio you got, and if you'd fork over the money to have A/C hacked in by a guy high on 70s wacky weed.

Oh, other dealer 'choices' were those damn luggage racks, bumper overriders, and Zymol.

"the painted black were repros"
I disagree, IMHO, my rims have a 901...number and stamped FUCHS. I will provide pics tomorrow. These are no cheap "American Eagle" wheel.

Those look painted grey to me. I know what you are talking about....like these on my buddy's 73 2.0 (plus rack).

The factory seems to have used a slightly more polished finish on the raised "paddles", and a slightly murky finish on the recessed ones. I'm not sure they're "machined" specifically; it might be in the anodizing?

Anyway, the wheels were not painted when they were delivered to the importer. A number of the dealers did paint the recessed paddles black (in imitation of the 911 windmill wheels), and the aftermarket copies also have these areas painted black. Some owners also had their wheels painted (some black, some another color to match the car). But originally, the wheels were not painted.

I like 'em unpainted. But that's just me... I've actually seen a red 914 with all-black four-bolt Fuchs, and that looked pretty decent as well.

Thanks Dave,

I've been wondering which dealers may have "customized" the wheels, since to me they seem to be CA based. I know of three other owners other than myself who have the black FUCHS, all CA, all non-original owners.

I would think opinion vs. fact was something that was settled a month or so on the chopstick thread. I am dissapointed to see people pidgeonholing the black 2.0 as imitations. I hope this is not 914 snobbery rearing its ugly head. I wasn't looking for a justification, but some insights on when the Fuchs had been altered since there are so many out here and what Dealers were doing the deed.

I have asked on several threads if there are any hold over Porsche people (past Dealership personnel or otherwise) who may have first hand knowledge, but I get no response, so I guess I should ask directly on a post.

I talked with Harvey from Weideman wheel refinishing the other day. He tells me he was the parts manager at Sierra Porsche in Riverside in the 70s. This is the original selling dealership for my car. He says that all 75 and 76 2 liters came with Fuchs. The dealership took them off and put on the aftermarket alloys to mark up the cars. Imagine, paying more for a cheap cast alloy wheel when the original part was forged! Anyway, I don't know how they are getting black backgrounds but they are originally a satin finish behind a polished paddle...

I hear ya Robby,

I know, I know..... all from the Factory came sans paint. I've known this for almost 20 years. And I know there are many black Fuchs 2.0 in the congregation. Thanks for finally supplying a Dealer, however, your info just goes to support the myth that all black 2.0 are
aftermarket.

That is one sweet car BTW. Everything I love is there, sail panels, chrome bumpers, no tits, nice color...not signal orange, but to each his own. smilie_pokal.gif clap.gif

Kap'n Krusty remarked once, "Back when I was working at the dealer in the 70s, we kept the 'lot boy' busy painting the Fuchs wheels."

I know he's on this BBS from time to time, so he may chime in...

Mine are authentic fuchs and have the black paint too. I am in SoCal and I am not the original owner, can't tell you much more than that.

Posted by: davep Feb 24 2005, 12:09 PM

The 911 Fuchs are anodized black. The 914 Fuchs would be painted black over the original anodizing. The repros were not anodized at all IIRC.

OK, I bought my 73 2.0 from the dealer with fuchs on it. Still have the car with same wheels, They ARE NOT painted from Porsche. Any paint is done by someone else. driving.gif

AFAIK this is the look of the factory Fuchs; I'm told the lugs are not stock though.

The Cap'n says DDD said The Cap'n said .......................... I'm here and I'm confirming what he said I said .............. The dealerships often removed the Fuchs and installed other wheels, and usually took the Fuchs spares even if they left the 4 on the ground. Maximizing their investment! The Cap'n

I just bought 4 that are painted...by someone.

I'm going to media-blast the whole rim, and then polish the 'flaps' so they look original again. I think the chrome ones look a little strange. Same with painted.

Not my taste, but then again a lot of things arent.

When I bought my '74 seven years ago thru Brad Mayeur, the previoud owner painted the Fuchs white to match the car. I actually liked the look.

Yep. My 76 originally had steel wheels too.

The fuchs were an option included in the appearance group.

For you FUCHS guys, what do your rims look like on the inside (show me your stamps)? It is well known no black paint from the factory.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Apr 20 2005, 05:29 PM

Mine look almost exaclty like yours. I've seen a few that were different (don't have access to my photo archives or I'd upload pics) because they were not hub-centric. The back side of the forging was different from the standard Fuchs on those, too.

Posted by: 9146986 Apr 20 2005, 06:14 PM

Brad Mayeur has told me the dealer he worked at, painted the insets black upon request, and on lot cars as well; to give them more of a five lug (911) Fuchs look.

My personal opinion is that they never look like five lug Fuchs, and painting the insets makes them look like cheap knockoffs. The polished "paddles" and sandcast matte pebble grain insets have a nice look, and the wheels have a distinctive look that fits the 914 perfectly in the stock finish. I do like these wheels fully polished though.

There are wheel refinishers that are now doing this to five lug Fuchs, which is how the very first five lug Fuchs were made in the mid 60's.

My advice, don't paint them; it cheapens the look. It's your car though, do what YOU like. wink.gif
