Here's what I did to a 901 transmission case to make it easier to adjust the side shift forks.....

lol2.gif Nope.. gonna run it like that..... Imagine the cloud of smoke behind my car from all the gear oil it would be slinging........ chairfall.gif

Actually, the transmission case in the pictures suffered from half shaft trauma. The cv bolts backed out and the half shaft spun around at speed and knocked a hole in the case. I cut the part out for the fork adjustment. That case is now just a fork adjustment jig.

You should see the side shift console...... icon8.gif barf.gif

Betty just came in for lunch... She is just that good with photoshop so she made a transparent transmission for me...

She also suggested "transparent aluminum" to fix it (Geek Check).....

I figure I can fix it like Charlie Davis fixed his transmission.... Duct Tape!!!!!

Damn good idea! smilie_pokal.gif smilie_pokal.gif

I've got a busted case and I almost trashed it last week.

Thanks Bob

I run my head like that so the brain I borrowed can be replaced easily.

post a photoshop file where you can hide/show the transparent layers....so i can see how this thing moves

The photoshop was a joke. The cutaway trans case exists for real. It makes a wonderful shift fork alignment jig. biggrin.gif

But I can't post any more pictures. I took the gearstack out and assembled my transmission.

Posted by: brant Feb 24 2005, 03:40 PM

Clay,

I'm confused...
why do you need an adjustment jig?

can't you just align the shift forks with an alignment tool when the stack is pulled out?

brant

Posted by: Aaron Cox Feb 24 2005, 03:50 PM

if clay could take all the pics from the same angle this would have worked mucho better.... sad.gif

brant

Yes, You can align the forks with the alignment tool with the stack out. But can you guarantee that the shift forks are in the right place for the 30+ year old intermediate plate. I have built multiple 901s, and I have almost always had to go back in and readjust the forks so they shift right. Usually, its 4th/5th that is misaligned. The intermediate plate wear causes the rods to get out of position, and the finger on the shift console will slip past the 4th/5th fork without disengaging 4th gear. then you have to pull the stack back out of the car to readjust.

Using the cutaway trans case, I can verify that I have the correct alignment on the forks, by installing the shift console and running the trans through all the gears. Now I know it's going to work right the first time........

Oh, and Aaron... flipa.gif

I took the pictures free hand. If I had known you wanted to make an animation of them, I would have just taken a movie of it.

Brant,

I made one of those from an old case a few years ago too. The problem with adjusting it outside of the case (or with the facotry jig for that matter) is that it wants to flop around and doesn't stay securly held the same way that the case does. I've got a design for a jig that holds everything together just like the trans case does, but the cost would be to high, and cutting a trashed case is way cheaper.

Posted by: jim_hoyland Feb 24 2005, 04:29 PM

Very nice pictures ! Always wanted to see what is inside the tranny.

Can you describe, using the pictures, what goes awry when the first tries to jump out gear ? I would like to know more about this problem before I visit the tranny shop.

Here's some new images taken Sunday with a tripod of a transmission in the jig. It shifts from neutral to fifth.

This one doesn't jump around......

Rockaria.. love the animation. It puts to shame the one that I was working on........ pray.gif

Posted by: Rockaria Mar 1 2005, 08:28 PM

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I tried to do it to the original pics but failed. But the tripod ones were easier to use. A few people asked for info on what each gear was and now they have it. Reverse seemed to be missing, so I hacked it together from other photos. And there seems to be missing a small gear somewhere in the 1/rev area, I think. Oh well... Maybe its just the angle.

Too much fun,

Posted by: ClayPerrine Mar 1 2005, 09:54 PM

The tripod pictures were taken of a transmission without a reverse gear installed . So the reverse idler was missing. I assumed that you used reverse from the other set of picts.

Good work!

You could use an alignment software like combine ZM to skew/adjust the photos

Plus, I really need to look at post dates and read the whole topic before I post...

So true Doc!!

Posted by: pcar916 Apr 24 2012, 12:35 PM

The jig works fine for me. But there are tech sessions with my PCA region where this would be a wonderful thing to have on display. I don't have a scrap 915 case to do the same thing with but it's a good idea to explain gearing to folks who just drive their cars without knowing what's in 'em. I just threw away two of these cases that were cracked. Dangit.

The jig doesn't always work, and this way I can install the shift console and make sure it is right.

Plus, the trans case in the picture suffered from terminal impact trauma from broken CV bolts at high speed (Not in my car... I got it in a box of parts).

Posted by: Dr Evil Apr 24 2012, 07:25 PM

Jig doesnt always work? What are you smoking? I have never had it let me down on over 100 builds confused24.gif

I intend to make one of these, more stripped than yours, for demonstration purposes. As a jig, this is way overkill.

Wow does that bring back memories. That was seven years ago, two 914s back and few more gray hairs... I have no idea where it went or why. So I dug out an old computer and spent the day looking for it and whatDoYaKnow, I found it. I re-uploaded it to the original place.

I have a similar case that was sacrificed for my constant changing of gears in the stack.

Made me sad to move it around the other day….but I might do one more in my lifetime….
