914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Restoring fog light grills

Posted by: mr914 Jul 1 2015, 11:19 PM

Was looking at a stack of foglight grills to find an acceptable pair. Most were repainted, green with mold, chipped off chrome or originals black.

Brought Up several rambling questions....

Base plastic? ABS palatable? My background is plastics and that would be the "today's" choice for plastic.

How can the chrome be stripped?

Can they be media blasted and rechromed?

"As seen on TV" or the web.... Spray chrome? They even do shaded chrome and gold. Has anyone tried

Thanks,

Keith

I sanded and related mine and then had them chrome painted by a shop. There's a thread on it somewhere here

I've used EasyOff oven cleaner to remove chrome from plastic...works good.

I've spent hours polishing them later realizing they can be more efficiently bought!

I had a set that had turned green. Figured I had nothing to loose so I used some standard chrome polish and a tooth brush. Came out great.

I used to soak them in Simple Green to get the tarnish off, the go at them with chrome polish. You'd be suprised at how good they come out.
