Nice work pulling the harness complete. Are you doing the wiring conversion yourself? PM me before you start if so. I also have some SVX manuals and other info (might have already sent it to you).

I looked at the smallcar booklet and it was completely overwhelming. So one step at a time. I will remove the tape and plastic and then go from there. Maybe I can trade Wire harness conversion for parts or money.

Posted by: Chris H. Jul 25 2015, 06:05 PM

Oh you picked up the smallcar directions? idea.gif wouldn't mind having a gander at that...

They do harnesses for $700 and only if you don't cut any wires beforehand. Sounds outrageous but it takes a LONG time the first time you do it yourself.

Really though, a lot of the wires for the ECU stay where they are. Relatively few are cut as a percentage. You just change the power circuit, starter circuit, etc.

I found some videos that helped me, including this series:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnDlYqHDthU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HderShN-dc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayxEfRvhLEE

There are more, so watch all of them that pertain to you and you'll get more confidence. He's doing an Impreza swap, but you want to use the ECU as a standalone as well to control just the engine, not swap out the entire 914 harness for the SVX one.

Also have a lot of supplemental info I can send if you PM me your e-mail address.

aktion035.gif Lets get to rocking, Im guessing we could have a race going on for completion. lol-2.gif I think you'll most likely be driving before I will. I still have flares to weld on.

BTW, whats with the cage, them welds look like barf.gif If it is a full SCCA spec cage, I know some one who was looking to pickup a 914 cage. PM me if you want me to get ahold of them.

Posted by: 914forme Jul 25 2015, 06:09 PM

Wow Chris those videos make me glad I'm doing PEFI, lol I don't have a genius wiring dog.

Posted by: Chris H. Jul 25 2015, 06:14 PM

Yeah the first vid is a bit cheesy but it explains the reason he's paring down 80% of the harness, which is what we do. Could have been about 1:30 shorter biggrin.gif .

Here's the link to the previous build. http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=212085&hl=

I don't want the cage but it and some other ugly mods allowed me to get the car cheap enough that once some nice brake and suspension parts were sold, the tub cost $0.00
Since the engine shelf was removed and the trunk bulkhead was hacked out, this car is perfect for a suby conversion. I don't plan to save the cage. It will be cut out and scrapped. I appreciate any and all helpful advise.

Posted by: mepstein Jul 26 2015, 09:11 AM

Since I have these trailing arms I'm guessing I should use the 911 parking brakes.

T struts and M calipers. Not pretty but functional from a 911 that upgraded to S calipers.
911 front suspension with elephant bushings came with the car.

Using 911 e brake so I bought these from tangerine racing. Seems to be the least hassle solution (just the adapters, using my own trailing arms)

So I need a trans. Can anyone help me find the right trans for sale. Not just type but an actual trans for sale so I can just purchase and drive home. I'm around Newark, DE 19711 so anything within about a 2 hour drive would be great. Needs to be a 5mt that will hold up to the 6 cylinder eg33. Thanks!

*I would really like it complete with clutch, flywheel, trans stubs, ect.

Go back and read Chris' or my build thread. Pretty sure all the clutch/tranny info you'll need is there. The TY75 MT5 comes with 4:11's or 3:9's. The 3:9's will give you better hi way gearing.

I'm using the transaxle out of a U.S. 1998 Forester into which I've fitted an OBX helical gear limited slip differential. Haven't had it up to highway speeds, so I can't provide opinions. In fact, I haven't yet had it past second gear...

Good luck with your project!

Posted by: nsyr Sep 17 2015, 01:57 PM

I have had a fwd subaru trans in my now svx powered 914 for about 9 years. It uses a push type clutch but the stock clutch is strong enough for n/a applications. And it does not need to be converted from awd.

I don't know why you'd "farm out" that harness? wacko.gif JK. It's about time you got back on the conversion. Those projects can bury themselves if you let them sit too long. beerchug.gif Kent

Posted by: mepstein Jun 26 2016, 01:33 PM

If I didn't farm it out, it wouldn't get done. The 3.2 conversion is almost on the road so I'd like to start working on suby assembly soon.

Oh, I get it. JK. biggrin.gif

A guy on the samba. He's done quite a few and seems very responsive and easy to work with. Asked me questions how I was using the engine, where ecu was going, how I wanted fans to work. Much more than smallcar- fill out the form and send us the money. I think he's also about $150 less than smallcar but that really wasn't how I chose him. There's so much to do on a suby conversion that I wanted as much help and support as I could get.

He mostly worked with the vanagon guys. Here's some of his info - www.facebook.com/jeffrobenolt

www.AutoVenturesLLC.net

Posted by: mepstein Jul 10 2016, 04:30 PM

Here's the harness all done and ready to ship. Jeff labels all the wires and makes it as plug and play as possible. He asked me where and which direction each wire should go and set up the controller for the radiator fans. He told me I'm welcome to call with questions when I get around to putting it all together.

I don't want to be known as the guy to where 914 projects go to die. So... Making plans to send this car off to get built by one of the members on this site. He will do engine, trans, mechanicals and get the car running and then I will work on interior and paint. I have to make it a roller and then deliver it around march. At least that's the working plan for now. Details to follow. driving.gif

Scott the flip is not hard, some of the stuff just needs to moved to make it happen, like we talked about. Once you see the EG you will know. The IRIS system is what clutters up the flip.

I don't think You're going to have an issue with it. It is very easy if Mark is not going to have AC in the car, becomes harder if Mark is.

Workshop is looking great, let me know if there is anything you need from me to help these along. poke.gif Yeah I know of 5 little round items you need all ready huh.gif

I don’t want to turn this into a thread for my car but...I do want a/c & heat. I was hoping the bulkhead mount might make things a bit easier with positioning but that might not be the case. My plan is not to micromanage the build but to turn it over to Scott A and let him do his thing. The only challenge I see with the build is Scott likes to build to a high standard for both looks and functionality and I’m looking for a good running conversion but not a showcase car. I’m sure it will work out. The nice thing is with my car is there is no fresh paint to worry about.

QUOTE(914forme @ Jan 5 2019, 06:33 PM) *

lol-2.gif Fresh paint, and yes this is about PorSTI, we just started talking about EG33 intake flips. I am a huge proponent that the bulkhead mounts for the EG, if anything it allows for even better positioning of the engine giving the clearance needed for the flip.

Mark I am sure a build thread will be started to discuss your car, once the process starts.

Oh, don't worry your car will be built to a high standard for looks and functionality...efficiently.

Getting the engine sitting properly in the available space is key. Ditching the cradle will help a lot and I think that we should consider a shortened oil pan. Lowering the engine should open up enough space to flip the manifold so that we can shift the engine back and get the axles straight (and use an electric motor AC compressor maybe) or leave it as is keep AC either way keeping the trunk uncut. It would be a shame to hack it up after spending the time to install the the donor trunk section.

PorSTi has a shortened pan from Outfront but I am not sure if they do one for the EG. If not small car has a nice cast aluminum EG pan.

Tom wants heat on Grey also so I added connections to the radiator lines for it. I have concept for a heater but Grey doesn't have all of the air diverters and stuff installed for mock-up and quite frankly I need to end scope creep on the project so so that Tom can have it back in time to have the opportunity to do final assembly before spring. We can develop it on your car.

Right now the chassis is sitting on 2-6x6's so turning into a roller is a springtime project - way too cold in the workshop right now. So i'll just continue getting parts together.

Is the small car oil pan the short version? How far down from the bottom of the block does the oil pan sit?

Posted by: 914forme Jan 19 2019, 01:33 PM

Scott I have one in the shop if you want me to measure it.

I hope it is not on the engine the is on the mockup stand wacko.gif

Posted by: 914forme Jan 19 2019, 11:02 PM

While in the shop I dug out my Smaller oil pan, had not even opened the box. Pan is interesting to say the least, cast aluminum, looks decent.

But what I found inside made none too happy.

Attached Image

What is that crap at the bottom of the pan? And who the hell fixes a mold with duct tap, and then uses it to create the sand cast? poke.gif

Well I found the crap at the bottom of the pan, I had small car modify the pickup tube. Now that I know what they did, I might have to redo this one. headbang.gif

Attached Image

And well that explains the crap in the pan. WTF.gif

It is inside the pickup screen also.

Attached Image

Hard to see but that crap is in there.

So Scott I would recommend you modify the pickup your self if your using this pan. I will keep this one out of the car and most likely use the one from my my running engine to build another one.

And to answer the question.

4 1/8" from flange to table. You can figure out clearances from there. Being cast AL, I might drop an Aluminum Skid plate under it.Just to make sure I don't lose it some how. VW has cast AL pans on some of the Jettas, and well the wife cracked one hitting a man hole cover, right place right time sort of thing.

Posted by: mepstein Jan 20 2019, 08:44 AM

I didn't think a shallow oil pan was needed on a svx build.
Stephen - Did they use drywall paste to "glue" it together?
I'll have to find the engine and trans at the shop.

Idk why the pickup tube was done like that. Ive met the welder they get to modify all of those pickups (he does hundreds at a time) and all of them are just tig welded. Ive never seen one he’s made, including the one i got personally, thats looked like that blink.gif you must’ve really gotten the oddest of ones out. I also didnt junk in my pan when i got it, though I don’t remember the duct tape in the casting or not.

It is not needed, plenty of guys have made the stock pan work. Lowering the engine a few inches really opens up space up top where everything is cramped. Even on the EJ engine it blows me away how much better the engine sits in Porsti compared to Grey, more like the stock engine. Also, I would have had to cut the trunk to make the starter fit in Porsti if the engine were not lowered.

We should use a lowered pan on your EG. idea.gif poke.gif

Posted by: 914forme Jan 20 2019, 02:38 PM

agree.gif 100%

Mine is dropped and saves all the trunk cutting. I even filled my trunk where I cut it out, so full back trunk is a plus.

Scott we can use this pickup for the placement / design, and you can TIG up one that actually looks and functions well.

I have contacted @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=5344 to see if I can work out a deal on the parts, I need a few items off of an EG. Fingers crossed he has them. But I will gladly share with Mark, he has dug me out of a few odd parts needs. beerchug.gif Mark if you worked out a deal, let me know I'll give you my list. confused24.gif

Stephen - Thank you. I always appreciate your help. I'm going to let Scott decide what I need or don't need. I'm still gathering up some brake and suspension parts but I'm going to try to stay hands off when it comes to the engine and trans details since he has a vision on how this should all go together and I don't. The stars aligned and the EG has landed. Unfortunately there was a bit of a crash landing and the engine was banged up a bit but nothing terminal.

Cam gear is toast but the cams turn fine. Cam sensor mount will need to be welded back on.

Attached Image

While checking the carnage I noticed the center cover was a bit deranged. Somehow the accessory belt and idler were rubbing.

Attached Image

Pulled the AC and power steering so that I could get a better look at what is going on under the manifold...a whole lot of sludge. The engine could probably use a full reseal to take care of the various leaks.

Attached Image

Tucked away. Won't be a ton of progress in the near future, just have to figure out what all is here and make a plan, and a whole lot of cleaning when the weather permits.

Attached Image

In the meantime I'll keep plugging away on the porsti. I need to make a long overdue update that thread with the engine build and some other fun stuff.

Scott's decision and budget build... idea.gif lol-2.gif idea.gif lol-2.gif laugh.gif

The while I am in there on the porsti engine turned in to new block, crank, rods, pistons, 11mm oil pump, springs, retainers, Kevlar timing belt, cast impeller water pump and most of the fasteners. Initial plan was forged pistons, bearings and maybe rods.

With the EG it seems silly not to take care of the oil and other leaks and do timing belt, idlers and water pump while the engine is accessible. Rear main seal would probably be a good idea also.

Yeah you really have to do the re-seal kit on that engine. You also want to change the oil separator cover under the flywheel from the plastic one to a metal one (e-bay has them). FYI the oil pan does not have a gasket, you just use sealant like Permatex grey. Usually don't need to do head gaskets, which makes it a lot easier.

This project has had enough time to settle into the garage, let's get to work.

First step was to get a hitch on the C10 that was on back order forever due to the covid so that I could bring the engine to the power wash booth.

It was a bit dirty.

No idea how many miles were on the car since the last timing belt change but the idlers were all approaching the end of their service life. Most subies are 100k then replace belt, idlers, tensioner and water pump. This is definitely in order for the EG. All of the timing belt plastic was cracked from the drop or from the middle on over deteriorated from use. Fortunately Stephen had all but the center piece in the boxes of goodies. He also had all of the gaskets/seals for the reseal and a metal cover for the rear.

The trunk replacment is pretty much free of extra sections. Still lots of grinding to clean up the weld areas and will need to trim the floor to size once in place.

This is what it will be replacing.

I needed a couple of nice days to work on the trailing arms so that I cold grind/paint outside. Last weekend was an amazing couple of days of Ohio spring.

Do have a bit of a snag with the calipers. The spacers on the outside of the bearing took care of the long hub issue but the calipers do not fit. Looks like there should be a spacer between the caliper and the mounting bracket.

Am I missing something obvious?

I don't think you've missed anything. My set up is almost identical to yours; I ended up needing a small spacer between caliper and mount to center the caliper too. I have Carrera rear calipers / rotor / drums.

If I recall, when I was putting together mine (and memory is dim here, but): the front of the mounting lugs rides very close to the back of the rotor. It did not rub/interfere, but looked super close. Some restrained adjustment (grinder) was deemed necessary. Might want to assess that clearance on yours.

Nice job on the welding BTW,

- Tony

Nice catch.

I hate what the prior owner did to that trunk. Thank you Scott.

The 911 backing plate is wafer thin at this point, so does not account for all of the gap even when fitted. I can check, but think 3mm or so is needed to center it from the 914 mounts (I ditched the dust shield too)... did I try the 914 dust shield? Don't recall...

That is a wonderful title , as someone who has both had to abandon projects and picked up abandoned projects it’s so great to finish them and so heartbreaking to throw in the towel...

Can’t wait to see this done

Wow, this is coming along nicely.. way to go Scott.

What Calipers are you using on the back again?

Pretty welds are the easy part...although there is a reason that I didn't take a macro shot of these welds. I didn't quite get pretty colors due to some crud suck in the small corrosion pits in the trailing arms.

Thanks for the confirmation that spacers are required. I moved porsti onto the 4 post lift this weekend so that I can drive the C10 and was able to confirm that I used spacers on the PorSti rear calipers too.

Don't tell my BMW 2002 that I am a protect finisher...haven't touched it in nearly 20 years!

About time for an update....'eh.

Had a spell of very little time in the shop. Then when I did get back it was pre power tour time and Mark was nice enough to let me work on Porsti a bit. That turned out to be a debacle, I'll update that build thread later. Been plugging away on Marks car lately but nothing super photogenic. Cleaning up the engine quite a bit more and deleting things that are not needed between plotting how to install the rear trunk section. I think that because I have so much time into the new section and getting another will be basically impossible I am having a hard time committing to cutting it down to fit the hole. Lot of time wasted measuring things over and over again...I guess if it goes well it won't be wasted but feels very unproductive.

One cool thing that is worth sharing is the header from Small car. With the shorter oil pan the stock exhaust manifolds were way too low.

We have all of the seals for the engine but still need a timing belt kit. I usually get the Gates kits for our daily drivers because they seem to work fine and are much cheaper than Subaru parts but these don't seem to be available any more for the EG33. Anyone have a place where they have purchased one lately or have one left over from a project?

Pretty much the only thing in stock is this GMB kit on ebay.
Attached Image

Rock Auto carries the same kit but it has been out of stock for ever. Anyone use GMB stuff before?

Cheers,
Scott

Should be fine. It's a non-interference engine.

Posted by: mepstein Nov 8 2021, 11:45 AM

That was a great suggestion to get the small car headers. Thanks
I have no choice but to drive over 4 speed bumps to where we live on campus.
I know you have high standards for your work but whatever you do for the trunk will be an improvement. The prior owner put a lot of time and effort into making a mess of that section.

Is TY75 MT5, one or two different transmissions, or all one part number for just the one?
Does the 3:9 run slower in road gear?

Posted by: mepstein Aug 5 2022, 06:31 PM

I got one from a bug eye Impreza. Have no idea what the ratio is.

One. TY75 is the # assigned to all 5 speeds. Here is all you would want to know re: the trans........... IIRC, 2006 & 2007 have 3.6 final drive https://www.rallispec.com/downloads/Transmission%20ID%20Chart_Public.pdf

Probably about time to update the thread.

Managed to find a rear trunk section in a local junk yard.

Brought along my neighbor gearhead in training along with to help with the extraction.

It is amazing how many layers come together in this part of the car.

Sort of kinda have it down to just what I need. Just another 30 spot welds to cut. Being very cautious to make sure that I don't cut out anything that is needed.

Also working on the suspension. Pulled the rear hubs to replace the bearings and install the 911 park brake.

Installed the front sway bar.

Assembling the park brake and calipers.

The thread title says it all. But you're new to Subaru so...........SVX used a 3.3L 6 called the EG33. Very desirably engine but getting more rare as are the parts for them.

Posted by: mepstein Jul 23 2023, 04:33 PM

I plan to put the car up for sale this week.

I just brought the chassis, engine, trans and all the parts back from Scott’s house. I’ll catalog what is there, take pics and then post a price.
