OK, I have my replacement jack post plate. So time to remove the rusted section. I bought an air powered cutoff wheel (only $9.99 at harbor freight ) , I have a full face shield, leather welding gloves & jacket . So from a saftey stand point I'm ready. I have a old bent steel rim that I am going to practice cutting on first before I touch my baby.

In the picture below I have marked out the rusted area (duh) and where it feels like good metal to me. The long behind the plate is solid so I only need to remove the lower section of the jack plate. So should I cut the plate as close as I can to the long then grind off where it is welded to the long? Or should I just leave the lip edge and have the replacement part welded on over / on it? This is NOT a concourse car, but I do want it to look right.

If you can't tell by my question, I have never done any type of body work before. This looks like an easy beginner repair
so I have to try

I think once u start picking and diging into the post u will find it is more rusty than the area you have
outlined. I just recently lopped mine off and am going without the Jack Post. I never used them to Jack up the car so why bother. I have some pictures I can post later. I am going to fill in the rocker panel or u can just Glue the Jack post cover to the rocker panel if you want to keep the original look

If you still use your jack post and are conerned about structural integrity you should allow the replacement part to wrap underneath the long to provide as much strength as possible. To ensure proper integrity, you should probably remove the whole jack post plate and replace all of it.

Also, corrosion typically occurs where water is allowed to collect and sits for a while. When you remove your jack post plate you may find that the rust has eaten into the long behind the plate as well. Check for this while you have the plate off and take care of everything or your problem will just return.

Well I made my cut last night. The long is solid, I tried my hardest to poke a hole, nothing just surface rust

I need to clean up my cut, square it off I mean. Was thinking of just removing the complete lower section to make it easy for welding the new metal on.

For the surface on the long should I wire brush it then POR 15 before the patch is welded on?

I would Wire Brush down to Bare Metal Than some POR 15.
