Another neato find on the 72 is a set of H4 headlamps. They are the US versions (DOT stamp), not the Euro ones.

Anyhow, what are you guys running for bulb wattages and US/Euro lenses?

Posted by: sj914 Mar 1 2005, 04:19 PM

I think I used to run 80/100 on mine.

Whats the difference between euro and DOT, besides it saying DOT approved?

Posted by: Travis Neff Mar 1 2005, 04:32 PM

US Spec lamps have a different beam pattern than the European ones.

fluted type lensed

Posted by: MarkG Mar 1 2005, 04:38 PM

I use Cibie' Z-beams (U.S. type, i.e. right side of road) in all my 7" headlight cars. 55w standard H4 bulbs.

Posted by: sj914 Mar 1 2005, 04:39 PM

Fluted? you mean the lenses with the lines running vertically on them.

80/100's. Great vision at night. Draws down the battery, so need beefed up alternator.

Posted by: Travis Neff Mar 1 2005, 04:44 PM

I have to dig into that already, when I turn on the headlights I start getting the alt light. Replacing the positive and ground cables this weekend ought to help a little.

Anyone experience problems with the standard wires when running the higher watt bulbs?

Posted by: sj914 Mar 1 2005, 05:17 PM

I never had any battery or alt. problems when I ran with the 80/100 bulbs.

Posted by: azbill Mar 1 2005, 05:26 PM

I'm using DOT H4's - I like them

Posted by: Travis Neff Mar 1 2005, 05:42 PM

What bulbs are you running Bill?

The wiring most probably needs to be upgraded with two relays and a biggun wire directly from the battery. I read today that if your wiring drops a volt or two your 100 watt bulbs are really only 80 watts.

Posted by: Aaron Cox Mar 1 2005, 06:19 PM

where did you buy them? and how much?

The bigger problem is the ignition and headlight switches...they will heat up trying to handle the load of upgraded lights. Relays will greatly extend the life of these parts. Anyone price a headlight switch lately?

Euro H-4's with 55/65 W bulbs stock wiring. Great lights. 100 W driving lights on heavy wire with relay. Melts the bumpers off Hondas.

Posted by: Mark Henry Mar 1 2005, 07:54 PM

euro H4's std bulbs and pilot lights.

Posted by: Aaron Cox Mar 1 2005, 07:58 PM

where do you get them??

Posted by: Series9 Mar 1 2005, 08:04 PM

Is mine Euro or US? I thought it was Euro, but I got these right after I got the car in '98 and now I can't remember.

Look for an embossed, or I should say raised spot on the lens that says DOT, can't miss it. If it doesn't have it, you are gonna need off road knoby tires on that thing (euro spec off road use in US), heh.

Oh, I would never use anything not approved by our DOT. ohmy.gif

yeah, right... cool.gif

I can't look at it right now, I'm in LA.

Also the Euro Lens has an E embossed on it. the lens is also flat not convex.

I actually had problems with Betty's car just running the stock bulbs in the H4s. Kept blowing the high beam fuse. Fixed it by cleaning all the connections from the fuse box to the light.

If you are going to run brighter bulbs, I recommend adding relays to the system. I did a writeup on this a while back, it should be in the archives somewhere. There was a wiring diagram and everything.

Ah, more quality advice from Mr. Hendrix.

Where are my chopsticks... cool.gif

Mine are flat, so I guess they're Euro.

Hey, The question of where to get them keeps comming up. The place to get the real Euro ones is at www.fastforward.ca The guy "David" brings them in for Vanagons, he caries lights, bulbs and relays. Great service and shipping. Hope that helps. Euro lenses and bigger bulbs will melt the bumper off any thing not just Hondas. biggrin.gif

I took another look at mine last night after I did the LED gauge lights - thanks Qarl! The lenses say MOTORCYCLE as well as DOT. What's the difference between motorcycle and auto lenses? Besides 2 instead of 1, that took me a couple hours of headscratching to figure that out... blink.gif

Ferrari Chat has a good write up on upgrading harness to run directly off of battery by-passing stock wiring ....

The Bumps in the lens are called fresnel lens.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/geoopt/fresnellens.html

The Optilux 55-60 H4 bulbs are the best to use as you will not need to ugrade your wiring.

http://www.hella.com/produktion/Optilux/WebSite/AuxiliaryLights/Bulbs/XP/H4/H4.jsp

With 80-100 the plug that the Globe ( Proper name for the bulb) plugs into will melt after while.

Posted by: SGB Mar 2 2005, 12:49 PM

euro lenses won't have the little alignment bumps sticking off the front.

Posted by: StratPlayer Mar 2 2005, 01:43 PM

I see someone is selling the optilux bulbs on the bay
