914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Another western 914 Classis event in May of June

Posted by: VegasRacer Mar 2 2005, 08:44 AM

There has been some discussion in the past about other 914 Classic events.
I would like to help keep the ball rolling to make them a reality.

Is a Red Rock Classic for the fall still in the works for the Utah / Colorado area?
A 1 or 2 day run on Route 66 from Flagstaff to the California border might be a possibility. Does anyone have any interest in helping me plan such an event?

Posted by: azbill Mar 2 2005, 08:51 AM

Where is the Red Rock country - Sedona, Az or southeast Utah and southwest Colorado?

Posted by: azbill Mar 2 2005, 08:54 AM

The Route 66 run from late May to June/July is not a good time by then its to hot.

The 'Red Rock Classic' event that was mentioned before was in the Moab / Canyonlands area.

I am trying for figure out some other western event before summer that will not clash with the WCC in April. May / June is not to hot for me. Any other brave warriors?

We actually have set the dates for the Red Rocks Classic at Moab.

Its fall though:

half day of Friday Sept. 23rd
all day of Saturday Sept. 24th
and half day of Sunday Sept. 25th.

A little bit of planning has been done, although we intend to plagerize some of the driving tours from a boxter group that is a friend of Eric Shea's

I tenatively thought that once the WWC was past, a more official announcement would be made with more details.

Moab is a beautiful rock canyon area of Utah. We think that Joe from New Mexico (914RS) will be driving over with some of our NM friends (maybe a few texas people also?) and Eric will be bringing some of the good people of Utah... John Lush will hopefully be bringing some of the Wyoming folk. We also hope to have you present and anyone else from the West that wishes to attend. Finally I think there will be a 10+ caravan coming up from Denver on Friday.

There are so many good roads in that area, just pick one and you'll be pleased with the drive. Looking forward to going to this event. I might be able to help with the road choices. I've done a lot of seismic work in that an know the roads pretty well. Fall is a great time, not to hot, it gets pretty hot in that area in the summer months.

The Red Rocks are absolutly Georgous! I would go there anytime! wub.gif

Route 66, the road is tore up for most of the route, and its a two lane road that is wavey. Might make you sick. wacko.gif Just my opion.

Anyone want me to post pics of the Red Rocks?
I have pictures from when I went to the Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah last year.

Posted by: Porsche Rescue Mar 2 2005, 11:27 AM

A bit off topic, but.........When I bought my new 914 in 1970, our first trip was a big circle, Portland, Boise, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, LA, SF and home. Two people, plenty of luggage space, top off in an instant, 30 mpg. Probably felt more comfortable on a 29 year-old back than it would now. The most memorable part of the trip was the top off drive through Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, with Zion Nat'l Park a close second.

edit: Toast, post some please.

I am delighted to hear this good news. boldblue.gif
You can plan on at least one person from Nevada being there. biggrin.gif

By default, that leaves the Route 66 classic for late spring.
The response so far has been disappointing, but those who know me will tell you I don't give up that easy. What I had in mind was a short event that people from Arizona, California and Nevada could all agree on and get together for a drive and some socializing. We could go east to west (or vise versa). One end would be around Ash Fork. The days drive would follow Route 66. We could even visit the Grand Canyon. The other end could be dinner in Laughlin. Both ends would allow easy access for travelers to arrive or get home.

True, but most of this proposed route is not that bad. The streach outside of Oatman is a blast to drive. I don't expect 100 cars, but I think if would be a lot of fun if we could get a dozen or so. How does Sunday May 22nd sound? It would be to crowded the following weekend which is Memorial Day. Would June 5th be better? Late May should be warm but not to hot.

Come on guys (and gals). Anybody wanna play with me? rolleyes.gif

It doesn't look good for me to make WCC2005 so the "Route 66 Classic" is looking like a pretty good thing. Until I looked at the map, I didn't realize that there was so much of the old road left. I thought the section by Seligman was all there was!

The Red Rock Classic looks like it could be a go also. I haven't seen dates yet for the Arizona Bus Club's annual Jerome Jamboree, but I think it will be a week or two before the RRC dates. I hope so, I'd hate to have to choose!

Now, I've got to get that clutch tube fixed, or I won't make the Route 66 event either! welder.gif

Posted by: Gint Mar 2 2005, 10:33 PM

One of these days I still want to drive as much of old route 66 as I can can. I'll take the lumps and waves and all, I really want to do it. But it can wait for another year or two.

Bill, we will just have to leave Phoenix under the cover of darkness before the sun rises. For those not too familiar with Arizona's summers, we often don't get below 90 degrees at night.

The northern part of the state where route 66 is located is at a higher elevation and always cooler.

Except it gets lower, and warmer, the farther west you go from Seligman. There's that big drop-off near Ash Fork. Not that I'm saying June would be too warm. I've driven my teener in Phoenix in the middle of summer when it's 110+. You just roll down the windows and enjoy the breeze (some folks even take off the top).

But it is a DRY HEAT happy11.gif hide.gif

Posted by: VegasRacer Mar 3 2005, 01:35 AM

According to the Western Regional Climate Center Historical Data, the average high temprature is below 90 degrees in late May and early June for Kingman Arizona (smack in the middle of the proposed tour route).
Their records also show the chance for rain is about 2%.

What is your next invalid objection? cool.gif

Laurie and I are leaving, hopefully in the next two hours, to drive that route (66 that is) and then over-nite in probably, Laughlin, maybe for "a little dice play." wink.gif

My boys are washing the car as I type. smilie_pokal.gif

A pal of mine once worked in Peach Springs at the caverns there, we may stop and check that out too. cool_shades.gif

I hope it won't be too chilly up there but Laurie will have her "baby blanket" along so all should be O.K. w00t.gif

i wanted to answer the poll, but i didn't like any of my choices. i think fall is the best time to drive a car with no A/C over the mountains and thru the desert. Anything before May presents a problem because of late heavy wet snow storms, any time after May but before september is too damn hot.

Posted by: Chris914n6 Apr 30 2005, 08:09 PM

I'm in. well, assuming I don't take the car apart laugh.gif

I did route 66 around 10 years ago with the PCA-SSR, wouldn't mind doing it again.

And I've been hiking/camping in Bryce/Grand Canyon so a fast topless run couldn't be bad wink.gif

John, let me know if I can help.

Was a firm date ever set for the Route 66 event? I'm working hard to have my car back together so that I can make this.

Posted by: VegasRacer May 1 2005, 01:50 PM

Thanks for digging up this old thread. I still want this event to happen.
The 1st thing we need to do is pick a date and go from there.

What do you say to the Saturday or Sunday, June 11 - 12 ?

Brant said something today about sending some emails to Joe and Eric. Now that WCC is over the wheels will turn again.

I say yay.

I'd favor Sat over Sun, but not detrimental to me going.

I don't know if I can spin spending several hours in a passenger seat driving though the desert to look at old stuff well enough to pick a date laugh.gif
Maybe I'll call Paris Hilton... "You wanna go for a ride in my Porsche. It'll be hot."

Posted by: ThinAir914 May 2 2005, 12:34 AM

I'll vote for Saturday over Sunday, but either way is fine for me. I have no preference for dates in June, but 10-11 seems like a good compromise between the weather getting warmer and me having more time to put miles on the car before the event. The more miles I can put on to test reliability, the better, but the closer to July it gets the temps become a concern.

Posted by: VegasRacer May 2 2005, 04:37 AM

So far it is unanimous. Saturday June 11th.
If there is not another date proposed in the next 24 hours it will be official.

Do you want to run Route 66 from east --> west or west --> east?
Where to start / end on the east? Ash Fork, Williams, Flagstaff?
What about the west end? Halfway between Laughlin and Needles is http://www.avicasino.com/index.htm

If we run West -> East, I have to come over on Friday night (and probably the rest of the Arizona gang as well). I suppose the same is true for the Nevada contingent if we run the other way.

I'm wondering if those who have recently run the road would have a direction preference just from how the road drives.

If driving Route 66 is the object, then there isn't much reason to include Flagstaff except as a gathering point. There really isn't anything of the old route left in Flagstaff that isn't just normal city driving.

I just wanted to get in one more event before the summer.
Early June is not hot, just pleasently warm. If you want hot, come back July / August.

Just to clarify, I agree with John.

As far as I know there are 2 seperate events.

One is the route 66 adventure and the other the red rocks classic.

Did we dismiss the Red Rock's altogether?

I think June is too hot for a desert run! wacko.gif

I think September would be much better. Plus, we could get a better turn over. I think it is still to soon after the WCC for another major event.
The WCC hurt many of our pocket books.......well, at least I can speak for myself.

Sooooo.........is it still official, or is it still open for discussion?

Has anyone check out the Route 66 trail since this winter?

We have had a tremendous amount of moisture and some of the older roads could have damage! ohmy.gif

I'm getting confused here (no suprise screwy.gif ).
Should we start two seperate thread for each of these events , the Red Rock Classics and The Route 66 run?

So what are the thoughts on East->West / West-> East?
Gotta climb most of the way if going east I believe...

The Red Rock Classic is still alive and well. Gint seems to have it under control. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=21369 should be replaced by a new official one in the next few days. The RRC will be in September.

There is a http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=30501

I did the Kingman to Laughlin part of Route 66 about a month ago. There were a few rocks on the road from all of the winter rain. I expect they have all been moved by now.

East to West ??? or West to East ???
I guess it depends on which way will attract the most people to join us.
I will start a poll to see if that will help make the choice.

Yeah, I was a little confused on my last post in this thread, but I've got it figured out now that there are in fact two events we're talking about. wink.gif

I hope to do both, but I have to check calendars.

I would think that east to west would work well. I could blow back home via Vegas (I15 & I70). But that's just me. I'll go vote in the poll.
