914 AX Shootout
Loma Prieta Region PCA and 914club are coming together for a one-time event: the 914 AX shootout!
On Sunday morning, March 20th, plan to be in one place: Marina Airfield near Monterey and Laguna Seca. This is a fabulous AX site with excellent pavement. Course design will be by our own Randal Barrick. Lunch will be catered in by a nearby Deli. Expect to be able to order a sandwich, chips, and drink for $10 or less.
This event is being hosted by the Loma Prieta region PCA. As such, participation will limited to PCA members (driving any Porsche) and 914's (PCA membership not required) only. V8 and other conversions are welcome! So, although it's not an all-914 AX, it's close! (Besides, we can show those tail-draggers and water-pumpers who's boss!). Expect about eight runs -- maybe more!
Sunday March 20th
Marina Airfield, CA
Registration 7.15-8.30 AM
Driver's meeting 8.45AM
$30 Entrance fee
Snell 1990 or better helmet required.
Instruction and limited loaner helmets available.
Drivers must work for runs.
For those out-of-towners, Trekkor will chime in here soon about nearby motel discounts that he has arranged.
I know that it's late notice, but we need to get about 20+ 914's at this event! We can do it!! So commit now!!! Also, I'm looking for a few volunteers to come early and do some setup (this counts for your work requirement!).
Please RSVP in THIS thread. We need to know how many 914club members to expect. Questions? Post 'em here, or PM me.
Thanks, and get those cars ready!
Nathan
Directions to Marina:
Take Highway 1 south toward Monterey and Laguna Seca Raceway. Take the Reservation Road exit south toward Marina. After one short block, turn right in order to stay on Reservation Road. Follow the road through Marina approximately two miles south of town. Turn left at (Imjin Road)signal into Marina Airfield. Turn right after the first large building on the right and follow the cones to the autocross site.
Man I wish I were closer. I would run this in a heart beat. I just have so much more to do on this car to get it ready for WCC. Plus the fact that you are like 9 hours away driving. The price is cheap too. One of these days I will be able to come up there and do some driving. I am even a PCA member.

-College-age people can crash at my place!
I'm not gonna have the car done in time to make it, but I intend to get down there in May/June for an AX.
My 914 will not be ready by then so Peridot Racing will be there in the ass dragger and the boxster.
Count me in for the fun...
-Britain
Dammit!
Unless I can figure out my linkage issues in time I'll have to pass.
Haven't got tires yet either so it would be street tires... Hmmm...
I doubt I'll make it.

Hey JP,
If you don't want to haul your car down, wait until June to come down and you can take laps in the new 3.6 beast....

My teener can't hold her own swepco as of right now. I'll keep you posted... If not in my own, I may be sharing Birgit's car.

I need at least ten guaranteed motel rooms before I can offer the phone number/rate info.
It will be at the Super 8 on Reservation rd in Marina.
10 minutes from the a/x site and car trailer friendly.
Good restaurant across the street and 5 min walk to the beach.
PM me if you want to stay at the reduced club rate.

If the weather is good, 80% change I'll be there.
I doubt Joy and I can make it. If the AutoX were on Satruday the odds would have been better for us - but alas...
Y'all have fun without us!
Just remember...
Full Throtle Until You See God... then Brake!

let's go people, surely there are more of you who can commit to this!!!
My car's still on jackstands , maybe it will be ready by summer (insert wishful thinking smiley). I'd come down and watch but I think I have pager duty that weekend. Hope you guys and gals have fun.
Mikey
How many '14ers are going to be there?
Nobody has replied to the group rate for the motel.
Hope to see more interest.
I'll be there if that helps
KT
I'm trying to tune my car. If I make progress I'll be there.
There's a chance I'll be there.... perhaps just to work for ya'all.

I'll be there defending my home region turf in the 1.8. I'm trying to make a commitment to hit all the LPR events this year.
I'd like to try, but I have to get my car from Utah to my house before I can commit.
What are the requirements for seat belts and roll bars for an event like this? Virgin ax'er
Basic req's: Tight wheel bearings, good tires, no major oil leaks, good firm brake pedal, secured battery, factory seat belts or better. Roll bar NOT required.
Easy tech. Come run.
KT
Thank you so much for the info! What is the drop dead date for registration? I am going to PM the member with the help list for my trip from Utah.

Hi Merrill
Welcome. Registration happens at the event, but try to let me know before hand -- i need a rough count of how many 914ers to expect.
looks like i may still be breaking in my engine for this event...
I will try to make it with my 914 - Theo
Trekkor - run - don't hide
Looks like I may not be able to make it after all - forgot about the big Porsche event at Fontana Speedway that weekend.
Wanna be there in worst way - however 29th wedding anniversary presents minor (major) conflict in my schedule. Both the car and driver need to blow some soot out and put some heat in the tires. Have fun...
20th eh?
A: im probably working
B: I dont have the clutch for it!
C: no trailer
Ah, I would love to come!!!!
Andrew
I will be there for SURE, no matter what
Gotta support the 914 Auto-X so we can maybe have some more in the future.

I will be nearby in the Salinas (w/o 914) working on my parents rental house.
Chris Julian is planning to debut his V8 monster. I can't miss that!
Tomorrow I'll see if Jason will participate (yes still bugging him, Brad)
I am way overworked lately, haven't done diddly on the car, and probably have a battery going out that will show itself after a few runs, but I do have a place to crash in Monterey and there are not nearly enough people on that list!
I think I'll try to make it.
I hate racing twice without modifying my car in between. Especially since I did so poorly last time out (WCC 04)
I can think of two things that I would like to do:
1) De-Camber the rears and toe out the front (not too hard).
2) Get some AX rubber.
Does anyone in central Kalifornia have some 4 bolt AX wheels wth rubber to sell me?
I've got a little cash to throw at it, and not a lot of time, I'd love a bolt on solution even if I have to buy new rubber (does anyone stock decent stuff around here?) I've got no flares, and am running 2.0 mags for my street tires so nothing too wide.
I've got a set of EMPIs but no short bolts to mount them with and I don't like the incorrect offset. Should I even consider making them my track wheels?
When the PO used them he burned the paint off the left fender from rubbing.
Who is on the "yes" list?
One week away...
KT
Otmar, if for some reason i can't get my engine together, installed, tuned, and atleast somewhat broken in before next sunday (i should make it, but it's damn tight at this point), then you can use my race-rubber/wheels for a six-pack. even if my car's not done, i'll be down there.

If I can convince the car to get there, I'll be there!!! I already said I'd be there.

Man, that'd be worse than completely ignoring her!! She doesn't like autoXing; she only wants to drive and you don't get much of that at an autoX. If we were running at Seca, that'd probably be regarded as the best anniversary present ever. But she really doesn't like all the standing around we do during an autoX.
Not to mention the whole waking up at 6:30 AM on a Sunday bit. (Hard enough to get her moving at 7:30 on a weekday!!)

Grant--just take the bottom seat cushion out when you run. It's quick, easy, and it works. It gets you down almost 2" further in the car, and gives you better lateral support!
If you have racing seats, that's another matter. Bolt 'em directly to the floor and get rid of the seat rails and adjusters.
--DD
Grant, I have three thin foam cushions that are perfect to take the place of the stock seat. Already cut to fit
First three takers get one.
Here's mine custom covered compared to a stock cushion.

How about just bringing the Boxster instead?
Grant -- i saw your car today at HPH. looks great with the header (and awesome choice in muffler!). larry did a good job routing the clutch cable around the hot spots...

Sorry to disappoint, but I have to bow out, too many other projects on my plate for the weekend. You'll have a great time, Marina's got great grip. I used to get my white car up on two wheels there. That takes a lot of grip to get a 914 healed over that much.
Don't forget to post pictures after for those of us that can't make it!
Andrew
I am really looking foward to this event. April 25th of last year was my first in a bone stock, dead shocked streeter "B" car.
Now, almost a year later, I'm in "FM" and all cocky.
I can't wait to throttle up through the start lights at 7k rpm's.
Let's have some fun.

The weater look's pretty good right now. The ground is actually dry again, so I'll pack the Hoosiers, too.

Not going to make it. The cars still at Custom Alignment torn apart. Bummer- I was looking forward to this. Good luck with the weather.

bummer to hear about that, chris.
i won't be driving, but i'll be there bright and early to setup the course and give any technical support i can.

For those that missed, it -- the Marina LPR/914club AX was a good time. The weather had been threatening to rain, but we had none, and the course was dry by early in the AM.
I left a little early, so no results yet...

cam doesn't really come on until about 5k, though -- and then it pulls HARD clear past 7k. keeping those revs high w/ a stock tranny is going to be his season's challenge.

Like I announced in the trailer today, any 914club members that didn't beat my time - owes me a beer! But judging by how well everybody was driving though, I'm not expecting one. We'll see when the results get posted on the LPR site in a few days...
It was funny, I started going faster when I eased off the gas a bit, the rear tires were just spinning out like crazy. I hate street tires! But hydroplaning on the 101 on the way home would have sucked more...
Great meeting a lot of you guys in person today.

Consensus was that he had dropped a valve seat. The motor sounded pretty bad, but at least no clashity-clashity (valve impacting piston) noises.
I told Matt to watch Britain's driving. You really ought to be an instructor, Britain! You sure are a better driver than I am, and I've been an instructor for years! (I really ought to run more than a couple of autoXes a year, though.) Kicked my butt by two full seconds yesterday!!
Matt, it was nice to meet you. Next time, stay through the afternoon runs--it's more of the same!
Grant, I liked seeing another Olympic Blue out there running. And you're right, you don't fit with the top on. Only things left to do are: Cut out the rails and bolt the seat directly to the floor; Slouch.
Thanks to Randall for a fun course. Thanks to Britain for reminding me (through example) that smooth is the way to drive.

I had a great day despite the fact that I can't drive.
How many spin out did you count?
Brad said, " you're only allowed one spin per run".
I know I had at least two runs with 2 spins and just avoiding a third was fun. I must have spun out in 50% of my runs
Thanks to my 914Club "pit crew" with the tire change and other help. Just watching me run and offering suggestions helped me out.
Randal, thanks for the in car instruction in the a.m.!
More than one person said they saw my rear wheels locking up and putting me around.
I told Andy that it felt like I was pulling the E-brake.
I post some video soon. Both in car and out.

trekkor, you just need to get reacclimatized to your car now. you put some extra weight and power in the rear without beefing up your suspension, your tires, or your brakes. not to mention you were driving like a cowboy (yeee-haw)!
also, i was looking at some of the photos i shot of you (i'll compress and send) -- i think you need to check your trailing arms for lateral play. in one shot, the left-rear is moving over what looks to be too much.
ever figure out that noise?
That noise, sounded like fuel starvation or mis-fire to me.
It only came on after 5500 rpm's and only during a few of the afternoon runs. Only under load.
It went away during the fun runs and I squeaked out a 54.xx.
