914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Engine won't start

Posted by: vsg914 Mar 3 2005, 08:28 AM

My 75 2L has 115,000 miles, leaks oil from everywhere, has low comp, low oil pressure, and leaks oil from everywhere. I pulled a strong dry 2L from my son in laws (on rails), crashed car ( he went off rails). Yesterday I pulled my engine, swapped the FI stuff over and put his in my car(not bad for 1 days work). Now it won't start. It gets spark, and the injectors are firing. I'mm 99.999% sure everything is hooked up right. CHT reads 2000 ohms. I'm gonna pull the air cleaner from his new car today to verify everything is hooked up correctly.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

fuel pressure? timing?

fuel, compression, and properly timed spark are all you need ...

agree.gif Yeah! What he said. biggrin.gif
Back to the basics. Check your grounds. Fuel pressure. Timing. On the last car I did I wound up carbed. huh.gif Something is not hooked up.

Fuel pressure is 29/30. Timing is close enough to start. Yesterday was a long day. I'm gonna go look at it today in a different light. I'll double check valves too.

I agree Joe, something is not hooked up right.

Was that engine ever started backup after he "went off the rails". biggrin.gif

Re-check all the engine wiring connections.

Coil?

Hi Joseph, the engine was actually still running when he was suspended across the creek. It's been started a few times since then.

Hey Curt, mine did that and I foound the 2 wires on the coil were backwards. That's the extent of my knowledge.

good luck beer.gif (Fat Tire)

Get out your propane torch. Feed the nozzle down the throttle body, turn it on and see if the car will start. If it does, then its a fuel system problem. If it doesn't start, then it's ignition related.

Remember, to get a car to start, you have to think FAST.

F - Fuel.... is it getting fuel?
A - Air.... valve adjustments correct?
S - Spark...is the ignition working?
T - Timing... is everything happening at the correct time?

Good luck!!!

Got it, and we were all wrong except maybe clay. The engine had a single carb before I switched it. The diz drive was off by one notch. smilie_pokal.gif Timing. timimg, timing.

Rich was right on too. properly timed spark

Talimena will be fun. The 2056 I build out of my old motor will be even more fun. wink.gif

Thanks to all. Drove the car to dinner tonight, and besides the exhaust leak, it runs great. Adding the vacuum advance equipped throttle body, really helped with the low end torque (75 FI system). I'm not sure why, but this new engine has the best throttle response of any 4 I've driven.

Oh yeah! And that is a good thing! YaY!
