Hey y'all
just like the title says..... which one is the most valuable/popular/better mechanic?
thanks.
R.
73-74 2.0L
914/6
but "opinions are like armpits, everybody has 2"
74 2.0. Mostly early features, without the freak accident "what the hell were they thinking" injection of the 73.
At the time, it was also the best to buy, they started loading options on toward the end, and the SE cars with all the fun sport stuff.
Oh, with early doors.... and 5 lug conversion... and...

Black 72s are best
'73 2.0. Nice motor, no emmissions, lighter doors and bumpers, side-shifter.
The 914-6 is the most valuable 914. The most valuable 4 cylinder 914 would probably be the one that is in the best condition. A lot of people like the '73 2 Liter cars because they still had the smaller metal bumpers and most of them came from the factory with all the options included. The '74 2.0 is a close 2nd but in '74 most of the cool stuff (sway-bars, chrome bumpers, fuch wheels etc) all became options so many of them don't have all the options. The '75/'76 cars are heavier and have large black rubber bumpers. Many people like this look better so the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My suggestion would be to look for the best condition car that fits in your price range.
76 w/o emissions and five lug conversion...trust me.
Hehe allright thanks for the info Y'all...
Hey Bondo, why is Black 72s better?
Its what I have....Hehe!!!

From the factory? I'd say (914-6 excluded) '73 2.0 because:
Other than the 914-6, I'll have to go along with the 73 2.0L, if for no other reason than the fact that people often hear that they are the most valuable, which actually may make it more valuable because people will pay more for a "73 2.0".
If that makes any sense, I think so........
There are aspects I like from different years. I like the no emmissions aspect of early (pre 75) 914s. The bumpers rock on early cars (no bumper tits) and I like the interior on later cars (with 2 individual seats instead of one in the backpad). My personal opinion: these cars are often parted out, so start with one that has the most options you like and customize until your heart is content (or your wallet is depleated ).
Yellow is faster.
the best 914-4's are a mix/match of the best features of all years, IMHO.
light early chassis/doors, 73 or 74 2.0 engine, later interior, late model fuel pump location....
they *ALL* have their quirks.
some people go whacky for the LE's.
my preference is for the /6's.
mostly it's just detail differences through the years. i'd rather have a straight, clean, rust-free tailshifter '70 1.7 than a rusty, post-crash '73 2,0 with electrical issues and a history of bad maintenance.
IOW - IMO - individual car condition is now FAR more important than year detail differences.

Ever driven a box stock 914/6? Except for the sound they were no great shakes....only when they were hot rodded did they perform......
Out of the box best 914 was the 73 2.0.....ALL the options standard.....you had to special order and pay extra for them in 74......
Early 73' converted to a six.
Side shifter
Early doors, no beams but late window reg's
Those would be my two bigest factors when looking for one. But really, they are all great cars!
I agree with a mixmatch of parts from all the years.
73-74 for the better transmission and 2.0 engines. Door beams for safety.
72's are nice as far as they have the moveable passenger seat, early window winders (the later ones work better and are more reliable, but if "light" is what you are after, they are there - albeit only a couple pounds), no door beams (light again) no engine bay sound deadening pad, as those are sponges with water and rust out the firewall in a hurry.
I'd say for a lightweight car, a 72 tub and a later 2.0 engine and side shifter tranny. Or a 6 conversion.
A factory -6 with late-model interior and all options. And a 3.0L 911-SC engine upgrade, or a complete 930 engine upgrade.
